MASKulinity
But Really… Are Men Lonely?

MASKulinity

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 23, 2025 27:01

In this final episode of the season, Samantha and Remoy tackle a question that's been at the heart of so many conversations lately: Are men truly lonely? It's a topic that hits home for so many of us, especially as we think about how gender norms shape not just our actions but our deepest connections.Luckily, The Pew Research Center has been hard at work exploring these very questions. Their latest report, Men, Women, and Social Connections, sheds light on the gendered trends shaping relationships in America today. Samantha had the chance to sit down with Kim Parker, one of the report's lead researchers, to dig into the findings. And in this episode, she brings all those insights back to Remoy. Samantha starts by asking Remoy a big question: How optimistic is he about life these days? Turns out, his answer puts him in the minority. Pew found that 58% of Americans lean optimistic, while 42% do not.Kim Parker shares the backstory behind this paper and how it fits into Pew's larger research initiative on gender and masculinity. It's all part of a broader effort to understand how Americans are thinking and feeling about these issues in real time. The big question: Are men lonelier than women? Samantha reveals the surprising (albeit nuanced) findings to Remoy, and the two dive into why this narrative about men and loneliness has taken hold.Pew's research uncovered fascinating details about men's and women's social networks. On the surface, they don't look that different. But dig deeper, and you find differences in how men and women use and interact with the people around them.Remoy gets candid about his own experiences, admitting that even with a great support system, reaching out for help as a man still feels like a major challenge.Samantha asks Kim about the connection between this report and Pew's earlier findings in How Americans See Men and Masculinity. Why do Americans say they want men to be more caring and vulnerable, yet men still struggle to seek support? The loneliness conversation takes an unexpected turn when Samantha reveals which group of people Pew identified as being lonelier than most. Spoiler: It involves the internet—and the way technology has become an inseparable part of their everyday lives.Samantha and Kim unpack how tech dependence can create unique barriers to connection, making it especially hard for this group to break out of loneliness. Finally, Samantha and Remoy reflect on the importance of self-care and taking a step back when needed. With everything happening in the world, it's a reminder we all need.Important Note: MASKulinity is taking a few months off to rest, recharge, and come back stronger than ever. We're so grateful to all of you who've joined us on this journey. Stay tuned for more powerful, curious stories about how masculinity shapes our world—and how we can reshape it together. See you soon!

Join us as we interview Kim Parker, an American of Chinese-Vietnamese descent and a former refugee whose family experienced the difficulties and oppression of living under communist rule firsthand. Fleeing to America (a risky journey) through a sponsorship by a Christian church in a small Texas town not only provided Kim and her family with the freedom and opportunity to thrive, but it also brought them to Christ and gave them a profound appreciation for America. Kim graciously shares her knowledge of history and helps us gain a bird's eye view of our present situation here in the States. S05 Episode 256 | Shilla Kim-Parker of Thrilling on the digitization of secondhand & supporting small business

Conscious Chatter with Kestrel Jenkins

In episode 256, Kestrel welcomes Shilla Kim-Parker, the co-founder and CEO of Thrilling, to the show. The first dedicated online marketplace for secondhand and vintage stores across the U.S., Thrilling has already helped digitize more than 600 stories across the country. “We put a lot of thought into — how do we present vintage and secondhand, because I don't want secondhand to be thought of as a lesser, marginalized shopping experience. The goal is to get everyone in the habit of shopping secondhand and vintage, and I really believe you can't force people to like spinach — you have to make it delightful.” -Shilla So, we've definitely touched on this in the past, but when it comes to the secondhand market — there is no doubt that the sector is going through a GROWTH SPURT.  According to ThredUp's 2021 Resale Report, the $36 billion secondhand market is projected to double in the next 5 years, reaching $77 billion, while the fast fashion market share is expected to stay relatively flat. As you may have seen, many brands are now building an in-house secondhand arm into their businesses, as everyone seems to be trying to find a way to capitalize on some of this explosive market. Is this helpful or is it just another way for bigger brands to make another buck off of us? There are a lot of hands reaching in to try to grab a piece of this secondhand pie. This week's guest isn't solely looking at secondhand as a *profit opportunity* — as an advocate for small business, she's very intentional about how secondhand is presented, because she doesn't want it to be thought of as a lesser, marginalized shopping experience.  Her platform has already helped digitize over 600 thrift stores across the U.S. — 95% of them being women and/or Black and Indigenous People Of Color - owned. As she shares, vintage and secondhand can be exciting not just to the vintage shopper, but to every shopper. Quotes & links from the conversation: “There are more of these stores across the U.S. than Starbucks and McDonald's combined, easy. And they collectively have billions of already hand picked, curated inventory. Each store has thousands of individual items. And getting them online for a store owner who is usually the sole proprietor, they're usually the sole bread winner of their household. You know, the store owners that we work with are 95% women, People of Color. They're the janitor, they're the accountant, they're the customer service, they're the sourcer for the stores, they're already juggling so much, they don't feel like they have a lot of time.” -Shilla (15:28) “We want to offer products that are going to last for decades and for generations and that are well made, and those are the values that we want to enforce and support as a company. And so, we have made that choice — that's the kind of promise that we want with the products that we sell. On the other hand, I don't shame anybody who feels that they need to shop some of these [fast fashion] brands, because sometimes, the people who are the most price-constrained, they are the best at taking care of their clothes for a long time.” -Shilla (29:00) Thrilling's Website > Follow Thrilling on Instagram >

Jenn Binis, President of Schoolmarm Advisors Consulting Group, shares her take on the purpose of American Public Education on today's show. She pulls the rubber band back further on the narrative of factory model schools to give us a glimpse at the more uncomfortable beginnings of public schools. She thinks the factory model narrative is comfortable, and that is why it prevails. As most people are looking to the future of schools during this global pandemic, Modern Learners is going to go back in time to see what can be learned from history and applied to our current contexts. Jen challenges listeners to ask whose story is not being told when reflecting and gathering stories from this moment. She believes that anti-racism education is at a tipping point and progress is being made towards honoring the experiences all children in schools. The hashtag movements of #disrupttexts, #cleartheair, and #31daysibpoc also get a shout out in this episode. We also explore the history of NCLB and how it came to be. Many believe it happened because people didn't trust teachers, but Jenn is convinced it has more to do with states wanting to have a better idea of what was happening in schools. There are parts of this conversation that may be uncomfortable depending your level of understanding of anti-racism work. We also talk about our use of the collective "we" which in this episode we defined as middle-aged white women who are teachers. This "we" was important as we also discussed the fact that 70% of the people in the education field are women, and yet women hold less than 30% of leadership positions in schools. The reasons for this also have a historical origin story. As always thanks for listening. Bringing you today's podcast guest, Dr. Kim Parker, brings me great joy! Dr. Kim Parker is a co-founder of #disrupttexts as well as a co-founder of the #31daysIBPOC project which we will discuss in great detail. Dr. Kim reminds us that teaching is political. To shy away from the idea of teaching being political means to divorce ourselves from our identities, and that is unjust. In this conversation we work to elevate the contributions our colleagues of color make to the field, their communities, and to the lives of the children they serve. https://modernlearners.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/teaching-is-political.mp4 Together we explore how the project came to be. Shout out to Dr. Kim's co-founder Tricia Ebarvia, who we featured in episode 72. According to Dr. Kim, Tricia gets things done. They managed to bring this project together in just a couple of weeks. They are hopeful that school leaders will reference this body of work for staff development and ongoing conversations about anti-racsim. Dr. Kim also encourages people to reach out the writers for keynotes and in person experiences. And, if you want to send them a cup of coffee through Venmo, that would be great too. Towards the end of our conversation, we begin discussing COVID-19 and the impact it is having. Dr. Kim makes mention that more black and brown people are dying of the disease than any other groups. That is not okay. She begs listeners to read the history and recognize we are preserving the same unjust systems, and we need to stop. She's also worried about her Asian-American friends and the unjust acts they have been and will likely continue to experience. Dr. Kim encourages people to pay attention to who is writing what they are reading. For me, following the writers from the #31daysibpoc project completely changed my Twitter feed. The algorithm that is now served to me is much more diverse, and I see lots of colleagues of color sharing their brilliance. I've learned so much. You can too. Be sure to read the writers and share frequently on social.
