Thoughts 3 John is addressed to a man named Gaius. There seem to be several men with this name in the Bible, one of whom was baptized by Paul. We don't really know anything more specific about this Gaius, except that John considered him a dear friend. John commends Gaius for the good reports he hears about him, and for the fact that he supports those who travel about, preaching the Gospel. It is a good thing to support missionaries. Even though we may not personally go out to preach the Good News, our support for them makes us an important part of the team. Then John has a warning against a man named Diotrephes, and good words about one named Demetrius. John says, “Never imitate evil, but imitate good. The person who does good is from God. The person who does evil has never seen God.”  So we must be aware of those around us, who we allow into our circle of friends, and watch to see what their fruit is. John 1:15-3415 John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’”16 From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.The Testimony of John the Baptist19 This was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Temple assistants from Jerusalem to ask John, “Who are you?” 20 He came right out and said, “I am not the Messiah.”21 “Well then, who are you?” they asked. “Are you Elijah?”“No,” he replied.“Are you the Prophet we are expecting“No.”22 “Then who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?”23 John replied in the words of the prophet Isaiah:“I am a voice shouting in the wilderness,    ‘Clear the way for the Lord’s coming!’”24 Then the Pharisees who had been sent 25 asked him, “If you aren’t the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet, what right do you have to baptize?”26 John told them, “I baptize with water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize. 27 Though his ministry follows mine, I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandal.”28 This encounter took place in Bethany, an area east of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing.Jesus, the Lamb of God29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’ 31 I did not recognize him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.”32 Then John testified, “I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon him. 33 I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.”Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/yourdailybible)

He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”John says “He was in the world.” The verb “he was” is an imperfect tense referring to continuous action in the past. John did not use the aorist tense and gather up the whole history of his Lord's stay on earth in a point of time. He used the imperfect tense suggesting the continuous exposure of Jesus to the world over the period of His life and ministry. John adds, “and the world was made by him.” The Creator was in human flesh. The natural man never accepts the teaching of the Scriptures when they present truth like this. It gave the lost religious leaders of Jesus day a problem and it gives unsaved men the same problem today. One of the identifying marks of a cult is that they do not believe in the deity of Christ. Several will argue with you that they do. But they do not believe that Jesus is God incarnate in the flesh. They deceive by the use of their own private definitions to the old terms. This way they can say, “We believe in the virgin birth.” But they do not believe what true Christians believe when they say the same. The Athanasian creed says, “Furthermore it is necessary to everlasting salvation: that he also believe rightly [faithfully] in the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the right Faith is, that we believe and confess: that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and Man; God, of the Substance [essence] of the Father; begotten before the worlds: and Man, of the Substance [essence] of his Mother, born in the world. Perfect God: and perfect Man, of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting. Equal to the Father, as touching his Godhead: and inferior to the Father as touching his Manhood. Who although he be [is] God and Man; yet he is not two, but one Christ. One; not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh: but by taking [assumption] of the Manhood into God. One altogether; not by confusion of Substance [essence]: but by unity of Person. For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man: for God and Man is one Christ.”Man wants to believe in a god that is subject to his rational thought. A god of this kind is not god at all. Then John adds, “and the world knew him not.” The word “knew” (ginosko) according to the Linguistic Key means, “to know, to recognize, more than intellectual knowledge, rather ‘to be in right relation.'” This is a revelation of the spiritual bankruptcy of mankind. Think about the event of his birth and the things he did during his ministry that only God could do. Yet they did not recognize him. I have a problem that will illustrate. I will be looking for a book in my library and as I look for it on the shelves, it will be right before my eyes and I will not see it. Jesus was right before their eyes and to them he was just another man. This will give you a little glimpse of that to which the eternal Logos humbled himself. Next John says, “He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” The words “He came” (erchomai) means “to come from one place to another, and used both of persons arriving and of those returning.” Where did he come from? He came from heaven. He came from the bosom of the Father, and from the Holy City, and from the eternal now, outside of time separate from time, from a state of protection into which no foreign power could penetrate, and all the safety that that eternal place offers. He came from that place from which he spoke and the things we see and the things we cannot see suddenly appeared simply because he spoke the word. He came from that eternal place into time, and into a virgin womb, and into a stable, and into a hostile environment, and subjected himself as God manifested in the flesh to a world that didn't want him or recognize him. John said, “He came unto his own.” “His own” means his own nation; it means his own people whom he had raised up of the loins of Abraham and made of him a nation of people whom he had rescued as a slave people from Egypt and established them in the land of Canaan. “His own” refers to those he had given the Law and the Covenants. It refers to those to whom he had given the Scriptures. It refers to those beyond the borders of the nation of Israel because he was their creator to. “He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” The words “received” (paralambano) means “to accept or acknowledge one to be such as he professes to be.” They did not accept or acknowledge him for what he claimed to be. This means they believed him to be an imposter. They believed him to be a liar. They received him not.Next John says, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” The words “But as many as” identifies a group different from a world who rejected him and refused to receive him. This group identifies all the saved. John says, “to them gave he power to become the sons of God.” The words “gave he” is an aorist active indicative verb. The active voice means that he made the choice to do it. The word “power” (exousia) means “authority.” He had the right as God manifest in the flesh tomake such a gift. I'll never forget a preacher in Oklahoma City who had a man come forward in a service and give him a check for one million dollars. It got into the papers. They rejoiced in this great gift. But in a short time they realized this man was an imposter. He did not have the resources or the right to make such a gift. What a disappointment! What embarrassment that the preacher had fallen for such as this! Jesus did have the resources and the right to give those who received him the power to become the sons of God. Then John adds, “even to them that believe on his name.” This is what those who received did in the process of receiving him, they believe on his name. Every verb and verb form in this verse is aorist tense except this one. The verb “received” means that they did this at a point of time. The word “gave” is aorist tense and means that Jesus gave them at that point of time the power to become the sons of God. The words “to become” are an aorist infinitive and speak of a point of time in the past. But the word “believe” is a present active participle. It is saying that those who received him continue to believe. I have a part of my past that it not a good story to tell. It was a time when I got away from the Lord and did not serve him. This went on for a period of about eight years. But I can tell you that I never ceased to believe in Jesus. I knew I was wrong. But I never ceased to believe in Jesus. A believer will always be a believer. If you have faith in the circumstances of your religion, you may become an apostate to that faith. If you have your faith in your church, you may become an apostate to that church. If you have faith in Christ, there will never be a reason to disbelieve in him. Paul said in Roman 10:11, “For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.” The word “ashamed” means that one will never be embarrassed that he put his faith in Christ.May the Lord bless each of you.Don't forget to visit HardwareOnTheSquare.com and find out more about our amazing service and the only Pizza Restaurant in San Augustine Texas.

However, if they take time to examine the Alinsky method of community change, things would become much clearer. Episode 82: Adoption Of Special Needs Children with Guest Dr. John Cranham In this episode, Dr. John Cranham discuss adoption of special needs children. His son Cornell was born at 23 weeks. He spent the first 6 months of his life on a ventilator and trached before moving to a transitional unit. John’s wife initially worked with Cornell in the hospital as his therapist, and then decided that they should take him home as a foster child. They thought about it for a while, and then decided to move forward with it. They went through 2 months of training. Cornell initially required, PT, OT, speech, PEG tube, trach, and nursing care. When he was around 2, the ENT found that the tissue around the trach site was closed off and air wasn’t getting to his vocal cords. He then required surgery, which did not go well, leading to him stopping breathing frequently. It took another year to take the trach out and do the next surgery. At age 11, he was having difficulty breathing again and found that the trachea area hadn’t grown, and he needed surgery to fix it. John couldn’t meet Cornell until he was approved to be a foster parent when Cornell was more than 1 year old. Even though it was incredibly challenging, he found a lot of joy in going to see him. He had to do an overnight stay with Cornell in the hospital, which John found frightening at first. For a while, John had a lot of doubts. Over time, Cornell began to really feel like theirs. They experienced joy, fear, sadness, loss of your life. John and his wife decided to adopt Cornell after his 2nd birthday, he went into respiratory distress, they didn’t think Cornell was going to make it, John started reflecting on his own resilience, he thought Cornell was going to pass away, and then a few seconds later, Cornell started fighting even harder. Then John decided that if Cornell could fight that hard, John was willing to fight for him. Early after the adoption, they went to see a psychologist, who told them that it was important to tell Cornell about the adoption before age 5. Creating an IEP for him was challenging. Educationally, they had such a bad time moving him from Kindergarten to first grade that they took him out of public school. After attending a special school through 6th grade, he went back to the public school. There, he attended some inclusion classes and some special education classes. Socially, Cornell was in an unusual place because he didn’t fit in with mainstream or special education children, so he didn’t have a lot of friends growing up. Nowadays, he has a larger social group through his religious organization. For the transition to adulthood, Cornell had difficulty coping because his younger sister was able to go off to college and he wasn’t. However, he was able to attend a rehab facility which had some similarities to college, and Cornell really enjoyed it. To learn to drive, Cornell practiced with simulators, and persisted with trying to take the written test. He currently still lives at home, but does laundry, cooks dinner for the family twice per week, and is working on getting ready to go out and live on his own. John coped by working at work really hard, using nursing care, respite care. Themes in the book include not comparing himself to others (comparison is the enemy of contentment), persistence, perseverance, purpose and passion, and embracing your obstacles as your biggest gifts.   Links: Instagram The Cornell Effect: A Family's Journey towards Happiness, Fulfillment and Peace       Email us if you have any questions or ideas! We are in the gospel of John and today we continue in John chapter 3 so open your Bibles with me to this great narrative. As we begin, I want you to think about what makes a good mystery novel. Perhaps the mystery begins with a serious crime and the investigation team descends upon the crime scene and nothing makes sense. Suspects are identified but every suspect has a perfect alibi. There is contradictory evidence and giant gaps in the information. Where you think evidence should be there is none. And the tension builds and builds. You think you are on the trail and then you run up against a piece of evidence that proves you’ve been barking up the wrong tree. You have all this tension because of apparent contradictions. Now, what is it that breaks that whole thing open? It’s the witness. The witness comes in and he says, “I saw it with my own eyes. Sure, I know it appears this way but in fact, here’s the truth. Here’s what really happened.” And when that missing piece of the puzzle gets inserted, the whole picture snaps into focus. It all makes sense! The mystery is solved. The fact the witness can solve the mystery makes him simultaneously loved and hated. Those who want the truth crave his testimony. Those who hate the truth want him dead. And it’s because of this that high profile witnesses need a witness protection program. Because the implications of the words of that witness will forever change lives. Those who are guilty will try to blackmail, threaten, or even kill that witness. Conversely, those who are innocent can be forever liberated. What we have in Jesus Christ is the ultimate witness. He alone can make sense out of the mystery of life. You might look at your life and say to yourself, “There are all these contradictions. My life makes no sense. It has no meaning. Why are all these hard things happening to me? Why am I the one living in the lap of luxury, fed with a silver spoon and all these people over here are impoverished, hurting, in pain? Why do people I love and care for have to go through all these hard things? Why does death exist? Why do the wicked prosper at times?”It’s like a confusing jigsaw puzzle and all the pieces are scattered all over the table and you can’t see the big picture. It’s like a murder mystery that makes no sense. But Jesus is the witness that unlocks the mystery of life. He can offer a perspective nobody else has. He can make sense of the seemingly meaningless clues.Well in the passage today, the witness is going to speak. Jesus is going to speak. And in a sense, it’s going to unlock the mystery of life. It all will make sense. But it has some pretty serious implications. And for some, those implications are absolutely liberating. But for others those implications are so incredibly threatening, so alarming, that they are going to spend their entire energies trying to claw, scheme, and manipulate to destroy the witness. What’s the testimony of Jesus? It’s all locked up in the testimony. He’s seen the truth. What is he going to say? Let’s find out.BackgroundHere’s what’s happened so far in the book. Jesus has just begun his public ministry. And what we mean by public ministry is that period of Jesus life where he publicly began to make claims about who he was and what he came to do. Up until John’s baptism, Jesus was privately ministering to people in Nazareth. He was living in submission to his parents, working an honest trade, learning in the synagogue. The public did not yet know who he was.But the Baptism of John changed all that. John claimed to be the forerunner prophesied in Isaiah and Malachi. He attracted huge crowds and he identifies Jesus as Messiah, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” Here is the promised Messiah. And that thrusts Jesus into public ministry. His first act of public ministry is turning water to wine. Next he cleanses the temple. Then we read about this encounter with the Nicodemus who comes to Jesus at night. And what this tells us is that Jesus was making quite a stir. John the baptist, the temple cleansing, the miracles, the interview at night with Nicodemus - it all points in the same direction. Jesus is becoming more and more well-known. More and more are following him on social media, people are buying his books, attending his conferences. Certain videos of his are going viral. You get the idea. And his fame is growing because of this claim he is making. It’s the testimony. Last week we heard the witness speak. We heard it. Do you remember it? Speaking of John the Baptist and Jesus. What is the testimony? What did Jesus and John bear witness concerning? What was the claim? John the Baptist and Jesus testified to the same thing. Jesus has descended from heaven. Jesus is in fact the Christ, the Messiah, the promised one. That is all at once, thrilling and terrifying. Mysteries of life are solved by that testimony. If that is true entire worldviews can be discarded as irrelevant. Entire systems of thought need to be reexamined. For some, everything they have built their life upon crumbles in a second if that is true. No wonder it’s hard to accept that testimony. If you’re an atheist and you’ve been living your life believing there is no God and therefore no such thing as an absolute morality and certainly no such thing as divine judgment and no such thing as an afterlife it’s pretty tough to believe the witness. It’s hard, we discover, even for the religious - even for those who claim they are serving God. We saw that last week with Nicodemus. Here’s a man who thought he knew it all. He was the teacher of Israel. And the testimony comes in and says, “You are blind. You’ve been looking at all the evidence incorrectly.” We even see this unwilligness to receive the testimony in the disciples of John the Baptist. Read with me in John 3:22.Apparently Jesus and John the baptist join forces here. Jesus has been spending time in and around Jerusalem but now he’s moving north to Judea and together in close proximity John and Jesus are ministering together. Now the most likely reconstruction here is that John’s disciples got into an debate with some Jews about ceremonial purification. And we don’t know the nature of the debate, but you could imagine that entering into this conversation almost irresistible to a disciple of John. Being taught by the wildly popular baptist himself makes you somewhat of an expert on purification, does it not? Now we don’t know how the conversation ended, but perhaps it left them wondering about the durability of John’s ministry. John’s ministry was super narrow. His message was, “Get baptized; the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” You did that once. How do you develop repeat customers doing that? That’s not a very sustainable business model. Where’s your residual stream of interest? And the disciples of John are a bit shaken by this. They come to John the baptist and say, “Hey we really like you. You are totally compelling as a teacher. But can I ask an honest question? Are we aboard a sinking ship?” It’s kind of like the employees working for a cassette tape manufacturing company. Man, I’m not seeing much a future here.Perhaps they felt a little defensive for their teacher they had learned to love. “Hey, man after all the work you’ve put in, you deserve better.” You were here first. Jesus just shows up on the scene and steals the show? That’s not fair. All of a sudden you become irrelevant because of someone else’s ascension. The jealousy, the sense of lack of appreciation, the injustice. Where’s the gratitude? “You made this whole thing happen. If it weren’t for you, Jesus would be nothing. You baptized him which mean you ought to be greater. The student is not greater than the master.”Now here’s the problem: they were afraid that their life was crumbling because their fame was dwindling. They were associating LIFE with popularity, success, influence. But John rescues their poisonous thinking. You’re looking at life incorrectly. You want to know how to get life? Let me list the ways.John’s answer is so beautiful. He says, “You are absolutely correct. We are being replaced. And the reason you are experiencing disappointment about that is because you don’t believe the testimony. Bro, this is a good thing. Here’s our place now. We are being replaced. Yes. And this new place is infinitely better than our previous place.” Here’s how he adjusts their perspective. Now he doesn’t begin by saying, “A person cannot DO even one thing unless he is given it from heaven.” That also happens to be true, but that’s not what he’s saying here. What does he say? He says, “A person cannot RECEIVE even one thing unless it is given to him from heaven.” This means that God could literally be handing you the greatest gift in the world but 10 times out of 10 you’d reject it. In other words, for a gift to be received, God has to give you two gifts - the gift itself and a second gift which softens you enough to receive the first gift. In other words, your main problem is a spiritual one. The reason you are experiencing these feelings is because you need a gift. You need the gift of receiving the testimony. That’s what Nicodemus needed. You must be born again before you can see anything. The same problem exists for the disciples of John. They need the gift of sight. They need understanding. They need perspective. They need to believe the witness. “The problem,” John says, “Is even though you have been my disciple for months and months. Even though you claim to listen and believe everything I have taught you, your eyes have still not been opened to receive the most basic thing I have told you from the beginning. Guys, flip your notebooks back open to day one. What have I told you from DAY one. It’s in giant letters on the front of the text book I gave you. I AM NOT THE CHRIST. I am the one who has been sent before him. Guys. Open your eyes and see the big picture here. From day one you should have ascertained that when the Christ comes, I’m kind of out of a job. There are certain professions that have a very short shelf life.”For example, how many of you here saw the solar eclipse here in Idaho a few years ago? Okay, think about the guy who sells solar eclipse gear right before an eclipse. He’s got the t-shirts. He’s giving you all the details about when it’s going to happen. He tells you where you need to be to see it and the best way to experience it. He’s selling glasses faster than he can get them in stock. He feels extremely important, extremely relevant, popular, and needed for about two weeks and then the event that everyone cares about comes, and the next day he goes out of business. Why? Because he was not the point. He was pointing people to the point. Now for him to complain of people’s redirected interest during the eclipse would be insanity of the highest order. “Guys, why are you doing staring up in the sky? Check out my stand. I’ve got an app that can help you predict eclipses!” How inappropriate! How irreverent to try to eclipse the eclipse, to try and demonstrate your own importance in a moment of glory like that. Now of course that never happens because this guy knows and actually LOVES his place. He has seen this before and knows what is coming; he’s the biggest fan. He’s tingling with excitement to watch people’s reactions. He’s the most excited person in the entire group. He’s like a kid. “Guys, it’s almost here. Just keep looking. It’s going to be amazing.” And then when it finally hits he’s just so happy that everyone gets to experience what he loves so much. I feel like I’m that guy, by the way. If you missed the last one one, the next one in the USA is April 8th, 2024 and yes it’s worth it to travel and see it. Totally worth it.This was John the Baptist. “Guys. You won’t believe it when he gets here. He’s ten times more unbelievable than your wildest dreams. You can’t even begin to imagine it.” And he’s tingling with excitement to show people this Messiah. John is saying, “I’m not the point. I was never the point. He must increase. I must decrease.” Then John uses a wedding analogy. And this is easy to place in our modern context. In a lot of weddings you have the ceremony and then you have the reception and it’s common that the bride and groom take photos between the ceremony and the reception. And so everyone shuttles over to the reception hall and they wait. And maybe the best man welcomes the incoming party. His job is to keep everyone comfortable. He’s got the microphone and he’s letting everyone know the schedule. For the moment he’s the focus. Everyone is looking to him as he directs them and points out the location of the restrooms, the wine glasses for the toast that will be coming, don’t forget to sign the registery, the mints on the table, the birdseed that you throw. But it’s small talk. Nobody is there to see the best man; they are all waiting for the main attraction. And then finally that moment comes when the best man says the most important words he will say all night. He drops his voice. He tries to build up the moment. “Ladies and gentleman, it is my tremendous honor to be the first to introduce to you the happiest couple in the room.” The doors burst open. The spotlight lands upon them. And in that moment the best man completely and absolutely and appropriately disappears. And his own vanishing is to his complete delight.John says to his disciples, “That’s me. Do you think I’m sad because of that? Can you not see the joy on my face that people are following Jesus? Speaking of that, why are you still here? I feel like you kind of missed the point of everything I ever said.” John the baptist was humble not because he was able to suppress self, but because he saw Jesus for who he was. As C.S. Lewis said, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s just thinking of yourself less.” In other words, you’re so caught up in a marvelous view of Christ, that you don’t want to waste brain power on yourself. I must decrease because Jesus is so much greater. Now I ask you, is this how you view yourself? Is this how you see yourself? Maybe you lead a life group and you think, “Man that other guy’s life group is growing more than mine.” Maybe you are woman’s Bible study leader and everyone’s flocking to that other study over there. Maybe you want someone else’s ministry because they get the attention. Everyone’s going down the street to that church over there. Yikes. These attitudes are pretty unhealthy. Is this a competition? We are all pointing to Jesus Christ. The more they forget us the better off they will be, the more clearly they will see Jesus! Does it not delight you to no end when people are overcome with awe by Jesus Christ? Our flesh says, “Can’t we have a little of both? They can be really awed by Jesus and a little bit awed by me?” John says to us, “Do you want life? Then disappear. Decrease. Don’t make it about you. It’s not your place. That’s God’s place. Your place is to drink up the life that comes from staring at his glory.” If you want to have life, remember, we are not the point. We point to the point. Life comes when you exalt God to his place and just stare at him. He must increase. I must decrease. To the one who has been given grace to see it and love it, that is the most happy thought in the world. So we have to know our place. And when we know our place, it changes our perspective. Knowing that God is in heaven and we are on earth changes the confidence we have in trusting self. It’s a good question to ask - how much do I trust myself? Or why do I trust myself? John gives us a pretty good reason here why we should always be pretty suspicious. Listen to what the witness says. He’s going to testify here some pretty powerful reasons why your testimony shouldn’t be trusted.John is saying to his disciples, “Listen, man, if you want to really have life, then start looking at things from the perspective of Christ.”He says Christ comes from above all - he’s referencing the dwelling of God. That’s a pretty unique perspective. It’s a pretty powerful perspective. What if you spent a day in heaven, do you think that would change how you lived your life? Nothing would ever be the same because of that perspective. Well, if you can’t spend a day in heaven yourself, what’s the next best thing? How about trusting a man who has spent not just a day in heaven, but eternity. That’s a perspective you can trust.Let me illustrate this. Years ago, I was part of an initial attack fire crew up near Cascade, ID. And part of the job was driving and patrolling the back country after lighting storms. And we’d work hand in hand with the lookout towers that are stationed on the tops of mountains all throughout Idaho. On one of these patrols, the Trinity Mountain lookout radioed the engine I was driving and said he saw smoke. And he gave me his best guess on where it was coming from. Now what he told me contradicted what I could see with my own eyes. I could see the smoke and from my perspective it was obvious where it was coming from. I knew the area really well. I knew exactly where the roads went. And from my perspective, all needed to do was turn down this road and I’d be there. I was 100 percent sure this guy was wrong. He was looking at us through his binoculars and he said, “Don’t go down that road. If the fire blows up you’ll be trapped.” I thought he was insane. But I listened. And he took us on this 45 minute detour and when we got there sure enough, there was a giant chasm we could not have crossed. Now all my instincts said to me, “Why in the world should I listen to this guy? He’s not down here. He doesn’t have any idea what it’s like being down here on the ground. How could he know what I’m seeing? He’s far away. I’m close.” But isn’t that the whole point? I listen to him for the precise reason that he’s not down here and that he’s not too close. That’s why I listen to him. If he was in the car with me, he’d be just as limited as I am. I can’t see the whole picture and he can. He can see the end from the beginning. He can see how the whole thing fits together. I’ve got all these gaps and holes in my vision and he doesn’t.Now this passage says Jesus Christ is a witness that comes down from heaven. He comes down from above. He brings down the testimony from above. This is why he can be the witness that solves the mystery of life. Because he’s above. It’s not like you have a lot of people who have had this experience. Jesus sits from his perch, from his lookout on top of the mountain and he sees not just a complete view of where the roads go. He sees where all of time goes. He sees it all. And because he sees down the road, he can tell you what to do now. And from your vantage point you might say, “Given what I can see right now, why in the world would I ever do that? Why would I ever give generously? If I do that, I won’t have as much in the future.” The voice that comes down from above says, “Sure, that makes sense from where you are sitting. But the more you invest in that future kingdom now, the greater the payout.”Be slow to question God’s perspective. We don’t like what he says, but we’re forgetting the context. He comes from above. It’s so arrogant to argue with the commands of God. “Ah, what does he know? He’s just the creator of the universe, sees the end from the beginning, knows my heart perfectly, has reasons for everything he does, he loves me. Yeah I’m just going to do it anyway.”Now it turns out that if I had gone down the road, I would have put myself in great danger. You see, God longs to save us with the perspective he has. You say, “I want to have sex the way I want it, I want to spend my money the way I want, I want to lie when it’s convenient.” Why? Because it will make me happy. Jesus says, “I’m from above. I can see the whole thing. There’s danger down those roads. I can save you with the knowledge I have.” Believe God’s perspective. So life is refusing to take God’s place. It’s believing God’s perspective. And finally, it’s receiving his testimony. Now, listen the idea here is dead simple. If Jesus really is God, then you need to submit to him. You need to ask him to be your authority. Receiving the testimony means making Jesus your Lord. And that is the path to life. But it won’t be easy because he’s going to ask you to do all sorts of things that don’t make sense to you. If you could record the conversation of our hearts it would go something like this: “I need to receive his testimony, huh? He’s claiming to be God. That’s the testimony. If I receive that testimony, that means he’s going to necessarily be an authority in my life. And by definition if I acknowledge him as an authority, I bind myself to obey whatever he says. I’m not sure I’m ready for that. I’m frankly kind of scared of that. What if he asks me to do things I don’t want to do?”Well here’s the first thing to say, of course he’s going to ask you to do things you don’t want to do! What is the point of having authority? Authorities always contradict your will. The whole point of good authority is that they can see better, they have more experience, and can keep you from making the mistakes most people would make. The good authorities in your life tell you to do all sorts of things you don’t want to do. Good parents tell you, “Go to school, make your bed, be nice to your brother, get out of bed.” The kids don’t feel like doing any of that, but it’s good for them. If we can acknowledge the benefit of submission to human authorities, how much more the benefit of submission to “the one who came from above.”The passage here concludes with a call to examine the implications of receiving the testimony. The testimony is that Jesus is Lord. That’s what he’s claiming. If you receive that, you set your seal to that claim, then everything changes.Communion PreparationWhoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. You see, we cannot go after Jesus but reject his testimony? A lot of people try, “Yes, I like the family part, I like the morality part, I like the community part. But I reject the Lord part.” No. You can’t do that. What does Jesus himself say? Be logical. Either he is who he claims he is and it’s all true. Either he is God come in the flesh. He is the one who comes from above and he has power to save you and you should submit to him as Lord and King and master and do whatever he says. Or none of it is true and you should go fishing or something. It all hinges on this. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.Now Trent is going to lead us in a time of communion and he’s going to remind us of how it is that eternal life comes through the Son.

Genesis 3:1-7, John 1:19-23; 29-39; 3:22-30Genesis 3:1-73 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LordGod had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. God Has not made a bad tree. He has simply made a tree. And there is nothing intrinsic about the tree that is different in any way from the other trees. Rather, God has simply confronted man with a choice. He could have just as well said, “Don’t cross this stream; don’t climb this mountain.” He is saying, “Believe me and stand in your place as a creature, not as one who is autonomous. Believe me and love me as a creature to his Creator, and all will be well. Steve White preaches on January 17, 2021. THE LAMB OF GOD John 1:19-34 JOHN 1:19-28 19 Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.” 21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” 22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’” 24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 “I baptize with[c] water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. JOHN 1:29-34 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.” JOHN'S RESISTANCE "Are you the Messiah?" "Are you Elijah?" MATTHEW 11:14 "And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah to come." "Are you the Prophet?" 1 PETER 5:5 All of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because "God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble." A.W. Tozer "A humble man is not a human mouse afflicted with a sense of his own inferiority. He has accepted God's estimate of his own life. He knows he is weak and helpless as God declared him to be, but paradoxically, he knows at the same time he is in the sight of God of more importance than the angels. In himself, nothing, in God, everything." JOHN'S PERSISTENCE ISAIAH 40:3 "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.'" ISAIAH 40:4 "Every valley shall be filled. Every mountain shall be brought low. Every crooked road will be made straight, and every rough way shall be made smooth." His call was to build a highway to get people to Jesus. "Get ready for Jesus!" LUKE 7:28 "I tell you, among those born of women no one is greater than John, but the one who is least in the Kingdom of God is greater than he." LUKE 11:23 "Anyone who is not with me is against me, and anyone who does not gather with me, scatters." JOHN'S INSISTENCE Jesus is God's Lamb to take away our sin. The question of the Old Testament: "Where is the lamb?" God approved Jesus at His baptism. The answer of the New Testament: “Here is the lamb of God!” JOHN 1:32 "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and he rested on him." MATTHEW 3:16-17 "When Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water. The heavens suddenly opened for him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him. And a voice from heaven said: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

Riding Shotgun With Charlie#093 |John  PetrolinoAuthor/WriterDecoding FirearmsAmmoland John Petrolino “relentlessly harassed’ me (his words, not mine) about having Mark Shean on the show. With some experience in writing and publishing, John was helping Mark turn his blog into a book.  Then John wrote his own book about firearms for new gun owners. He’s also been writing for Ammoland as well.  After spending some time with John, I found out he’s been writing & publishing books for over 20 years.    John and I have been going back and forth and finally set a date to film a show in New Jersey.  John has been around firearms since he was a kid, going shooting and hunting with his father. After a number of years shooting long guns, he decided it was time to get a handgun.  With limited training and a less than satisfactory course, he knew there had to be a better way.  So he became an instructor. He started writing his own book to offer his students, incorporating what he wanted to make sure students know.    We talk about the reciprocity between a number of states in the northeast, and how some permits work, some permits used to work, and some aren’t needed at all.  The laws vary from state to state as we all know, but some are more confusing than others.  Massachusetts and New Jersey are kindred spirits that way.    John also writes for Ammoland.  He’s been covering the things that are centered in New Jersey. He’s covered a number of topics from bear hunts on state and private lands to the changes with marijuana and how it's still federally prohibited. John gets into how tobacco is also regulated and how it affects hunting, and how it will also affect marijuana use as well.  We head to a couple ranges for a quick selfie. I wasn’t able to carry or transport in New Jersey, but since we weren’t going straight to a range, John said we couldn’t even bring any firearms with us. We also talk about how it is very important to support our local ranges. And that our state 2A grassroots groups need the help of everyone involved with, not just shooting and competitions, but the gun rights activity, as well.    John has been a really good friend, too. Since we’ve been communicating, he’s been pushing for t-shirt sales because he wanted an RSWC shirt. And a mug.  And a hoodie. But he’s also guiding me with things that I need to do better.  Favorite quotes: “There’s got to be a better way for a guy to get on the target.” “I wanted to write something that would work out for inexperienced shooters and veteran shooters alike.” “New Jersey doesn't issue concealed carry permits to regular peasants” “From a freedom perspective, I want people to be able to do what they want to do.” “The bulldozer of freedom is going cross the country, we got to try to stop it” John Petrolino Websitehttps://johnpetrolino.com/   John’s Articles on Ammoland.comhttps://www.ammoland.com/author/jpetrolinoiii/ Coalition of New Jersey Firearm Ownershttps://www.cnjfo.com/ Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubhttps://www.anjrpc.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters.    Leadslingers Whiskey https://leadslingerswhiskey.com/ info@leadslingerswhiskey.com   Keyhole Holsters Veteran Owned, American Madehttp://www.keyholeholsters.com/   Dennis McCurdyAuthor, Speaker, Firewalkerhttp://www.find-away.com/   Or listen on:iTunes/Apple podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/riding-shotgun-with-charlie/id1275691565   Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/4EEPud0XzYz4wo0MYmA9uB   iHeartRadio https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-riding-shotgun-with-charli-30654270/   Self Defense Radio Network http://sdrn.us/   OpsLens App on iPhone & iPad https://apps.apple.com/us/app/opslens-network/id1498033459

January 10, 2021 Mark 1:4-11 4 John the Baptizer was in the desert telling people about a baptism of repentance [a] for the forgiveness of sins. 5 All Judea and all the people of Jerusalem went to him. As they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River. 6 John was dressed in clothes made from camel's hair. He wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He announced, “The one who comes after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to bend down and untie his sandal straps. 8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River. 10 As Jesus came out of the water, he saw heaven split open and the Spirit coming down to him as a dove. 11 A voice from heaven said, “You are my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with you.” Matthew 3:13-17 13 Then Jesus appeared. He came from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to stop him and said, “I need to be baptized by you. Why are you coming to me?” 15 Jesus answered him, “This is the way it has to be now. This is the proper way to do everything that God requires of us.” Then John gave in to him. 16 After Jesus was baptized, he immediately came up from the water. Suddenly, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down as a dove to him. 17 Then a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love—my Son with whom I am pleased.”

Then John admonishes his readers to reject the mindset and values of the world because the destruction that is in the world desires to rob them of their victory in Jesus. Then John called two of his disciples 19and sent them to ask the Lord, “Are you the one who is coming, or should we look for someone else?”20The men came to Jesus and said, “John the Baptizer sent us to ask you, ‘Are you the one who is coming, or should we look for someone else?’ ”21At that time Jesus was curing many people who had diseases, sicknesses, and evil spirits. Also, he was giving back sight to many who were blind.22Jesus answered John’s disciples, “Go back, and tell John what you have seen and heard: Blind people see again, lame people are walking, those with skin diseases are made clean, deaf people hear again, dead people are brought back to life, and poor people hear the Good News. 23Whoever doesn’t lose his faith in me is indeed blessed.”Luke 7: 18-22 GWT Does the fact that John the Baptist sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the one who is coming, or should we look for someone else?” strike you as surprising? After all, it was John who baptized Jesus in the Jordan River and saw the Holy Spirit descend in the form of a dove, he heard God the Father speak from Heaven and declare that Jesus was His beloved Son, and that Jesus was well pleasing to Him.  So why the questions? Think of John's circumstances. Where was he? Why did he have to send his disciples to ask Jesus these questions? Why didn't he go himself? Why does it look like he was now doubting Jesus? John was in prison.  Beloved, what happens when we find ourselves in difficult circumstances? Often times, if we're honest about it, we begin to doubt God, at least for a moment. Don't we? Is God really there? If He is, why doesn't He help me? I pray and ask Him to make things better, but here I am. God, are you really there? Do you really love me? Do you even care? I've asked those questions before, and you probably have, too. John probably expected the Messiah to come in power to vanquish the Romans, like virtually every other Jew. He probably expected the Messiah to get him out of that prison.  John had to have known of the miracles that Jesus had been doing, but the fact that Jesus had not acted in the political realm forced John to question if Jesus was the One they had been expecting. Of course, Jesus knew what people had been expecting in a Messiah. They were looking for a deliverer, a leader, a king. But we know from where we are on this side of the cross, the first coming of Jesus was to establish a New Covenant. He came not to free Israel from the bondage of Rome, but to free mankind from the bondage of sin and provide the way for the salvation of souls. The people did not know that His coming as a ruler would be at His second coming.  So Jesus told John's disciples to tell John what they had seen and heard. It was a simple message; Jesus is the Messiah, but his power is shown through acts of mercy, not acts of judgement, and those who hold on to their faith in this Messiah are blessed. And beloved, when we are in those times, those times that come to each of us as we go through life, when we wonder if God is there, rest assured that He is. Remember that He is the God who heals us, He is the God who holds us in His strong right hand, and nothing can pull us from His grasp.

So he has some advice for asset owners looking to bring Space-as-a-Service into their portfolios. Landlords should think twice before signing a lease with an operator that only has exposure to the downside risk. John shares how landlords can balance their risk and stay in control of their building value by deploying a model that aligns investor interests with the operator brand. In this episode we talk about credit aggregation, gaining access to channels that reach enterprise customers, why John is bullish on suburban markets and how to support the work from anywhere trend. Connect with John on LinkedIn Connect with Caleb on LinkedIn If you have any questions or feedback on this episode, email podcast@workbold.co Value Bombs We're starting to see a blurred line between flex and conventional leases Landlords are now in the flexible office industry Demand for flexibility is not going away because business cycles are short and uncertainty is high Landlords want to have Space-as-a-Service with a flex component in a building to meet this demand, but we’re seeing challenges in the lease model with operators The Manchise model aligns interests of the asset owner and operator brand Landlords are aligning with Serendipity Labs in secondary and suburban markets for better quality credit aggregation and access to channels to reach customers they couldn’t reach on their own Landlords get their location managed and participate in the economic upside  A good manchise agreement should be considered tantamount to an agreement with a property management or facilities management company combined with a leasing and marketing agreement, but with better credit aggregation. Serendipity Labs is growing in suburban and secondary markets to support corporate occupiers by creating entire footprints that the corporate occupier doesn’t have themselves Most corporate occupiers don’t want to sign a lease for under 10,000 SqFt in a secondary or non-HQ market And "work from home" (WFH) doesn’t work for everyone So they’re supporting "work from anywhere" (WFA) and enabling democratisation of workplace choice During Covid times suburban locations are seeing a faster return to occupancy than city centre locations Corporate occupiers are making decisions to enable an alternative to commuting to city centres / and employees want solutions to escape from home offices Suburban coworking occupancy is returning faster than city centre locations Serendipity Labs is starting to see small meetings (less than 20 people) return John's advice for landlords who want to bring in Space-as-a-Service (SPaaS) to their portfolios:  Choose an operator with network and reach Match the right brand to the building The right brand can add value to the right building The SPaaS brand flag you fly on the building says a lot to customers about the quality of the building About John Arenas John has a proven track record of bringing ground breaking innovations to the corporate real estate and hospitality industries. In the early 2000s, John Founded Worktopia, an online reservation system for sourcing office & meeting space and other workspace “on-demand”. In 2008, he secured venture capital finance to focus on the hotel meeting space vertical where he established an online marketplace for travel distribution with partners such as American Express, Travelocity, and the global hotel chains. He went on to be named one of the 25 most influential executives in business travel before exiting through an acquisition by SignUp4 (now part of Cvent). Before that he founded Stratis, a chain of franchised Flexible Office centers that he developed across 11 US States, primarily in suburban and secondary markets. Stratis was acquired by Regus in April 2001, where John joined the leadership team as President of the Americas and reported directly to CEO Mark Dixon.  Then John led the restructuring of approximately $1B in lease obligations, comprising over 3MM square feet with 42 landlords across the US, saving $350M in cash for Regus, bringing the company back into profitability, resulting in an 11x share price increase. Now he’s at it again, building one of the fastest growing corporate coworking brands, Serendipity Labs, across the US, and now the UK through a partnership with NewFlex. But unlike his time with Regus, he’s leading Serendipity Labs with a better economic model for landlords.   Sponsors Fortune Favours the Bold   Bold helps commercial real estate create & manage flexible spaces to dream, create, share, and succeed in. An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest. Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest.”Then John said in reply, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow in our company.” Jesus said to him, “Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you.” Music by Chad Crouch Download our application and listen to the Daily Gospel, The Holy Rosary, and much more.

Then John said in reply, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow in our company.” Jesus said to him, “Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”  Luke 9:49-50Why would the Apostles try to prevent someone from casting a demon out in Jesus’ name?  Jesus was not concerned about it and, in fact, tells them not to prevent him.  So why were the Apostles concerned?  Most likely because of jealousy. The jealousy we see in this case among the Apostles is one that can creep into the Church at times.  It has to do with a desire for power and control.  The Apostles were upset because the person casting out demons did not follow in their company.  In other words, the Apostles were not able to be in charge of this person.Though this may be hard to understand it may be helpful to see it in a modern context.  Say someone is in charge of a ministry at church and another person or persons start up a new ministry.  The new ministry is quite successful and, as a result, those who have been working in the older more established ministries may get upset and a bit jealous. This is silly but it’s also reality.  It happens all the time, not only within a church setting but also in our daily lives.  When we see someone else doing something that is successful or bearing good fruit, we may get envious or jealous.  In this case, with the Apostles, Jesus is quite understanding and compassionate about the whole thing.  But He is also quite clear.  “Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”  Do you see things in life this way?  When someone does well do you rejoice or are you negative?  When another does good things in Jesus’ name, does that fill your heart with gratitude that God is using that person for good or do you get envious?Reflect, today, upon the many good things going on all around you.  Reflect, especially, upon those who are furthering the Kingdom of God.  And reflect upon how you feel about them.  Pray that you will see them as your coworker in the vineyard of Christ rather than as your competitor.  Lord, I thank You for the many good things taking place within Your Church and within society.  Help me to rejoice in all that You do through others.  Help me to let go of any struggle I have with envy.  Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2020 My Catholic Life! HE STEPS FORWARD FOR US Today’s readings are Ezekiel 13 – 14 and Revelation 5.  We are reading from the New Living Translation. At first look you might weep but you need to look again, and again. We look for the answers to the judgement that life is sure to bring, the rebellion that is borne out in each human heart, and the destruction that comes from our own selfish ways. When we take that first look, we are going to weep, because we don’t have an answer, and John doesn’t have an answer, either. He weeps because he realizes that within himself, he has no answer to judgement. No one has been found worthy. No one has stepped forward on behalf of this broken and rebellious world. John weeps for himself and his nation. But an elder stops him from weeping. He’s told by this elder to take a second look. In this second look he is going to see an answer. The answer is the Lamb. He says “Stop weeping! Look…” (Rev 5:5 NLT) And when John looks, he sees a lamb. This Lamb steps forward to take the scroll that represents the fury of judgement due to this broken and rebellious world. He’s not led or pushed forward. He steps forward, because of the love he has for this broken world, and for broken people like me and you. This lamb steps forward to take the scroll representing the judgement due this world. The Lamb is the only one who has the answer for the judgement I deserve in this life.   That scroll was nailed with him on the cross, as it were. On the cross he opened the scroll and answered the charges written on it. He absorbed the fury of judgement proclaimed in the scroll.  answer. Then John is told to look a third time. This third look shows him all that the Lamb has accomplished by stepping forward. He sees a vision of people from every tribe and tongue and language – countless millions around the throne – worshipping and adoring the Lamb. Keep looking! When you don’t see an answer in the midst of your tears, keep looking. If you look you will see a Lamb. He alone has the answer you’re looking for – the answer to your despair and shame, your broken heart, and your regrets. He has an answer for it all. He is stepping forward, for you, out of love, to do what he alone can do. John says that we shouldn’t stop looking. We need to look again, a third time. Then we will see that the Lamb has been stepping forward for countless millions of others. – other broken and rebellious people like us. He is making them new, restoring their hearts, drying their tears, and giving them a new song: Worthy is the Lamb! May God give us this new song today. And may he cause us to look, and look, and look again, and sing our new song.
