We had the privilege of meeting Haven Seltmann in her home in Phoenix. Originally hailing from Portland, Oregon, Haven's life took her to the charming town of Silverton during her formative years. She grew up as an only child, her younger brother sadly passing away at a young age. This early experience set the stage for a profound spiritual journey.Haven's upbringing was steeped in church and spirituality, evolving over the years as she learned to follow the universe's cues. Her relationship with her parents has been somewhat unconventional. Her dad feels more like an uncle, while her mom and sister play significant roles in her life.During our conversation, we delved into the notion that as we grow and become parents ourselves, we often gain a deeper appreciation for our own parents' struggles and imperfections. Haven humorously referred to herself as the "poster child for the benefit of the doubt," reflecting on the judgments we cast on our parents as we mature and gain more understanding. One poignant theme that emerged from Haven's story was the hope that children harbor for their parents to simply be present. She emphasized that being there for your children doesn't require trying to be more than what you are; it's about genuinely showing up.Haven's journey is one of introspection, growth, and evolving perspectives. Join us as we sit down with Haven, traverse her life's path through The Jar, and gain insights into the complexity of family dynamics and the profound impact of parenting. On a Thursday morning in North Vegas, we ventured to meet our next guest, Marcel. As we approached Marcel's street, a striking sight greeted us – a bright red pickup truck covered in what seemed like infinite graffiti, intentional graffiti that reminded us of the work of New York artist Renda Writer. We parked the van across from Marcel's house, and almost instantly, a booming voice and a warm greeting echoed from the driveway. Marcel welcomed us, setting the tone for what promised to be a profound conversation.Marcel hails from Ocean Beach, California, growing up with one brother and one sister in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. However, his childhood was marked by financial struggles, drugs in the household, and barely scraping by. His father, a charismatic Rolling Stone-type figure, eventually retired as a nurse at the age of 73.We learned that the graffiti-covered truck outside belonged to Marcel, and it was more than just a vehicle; it was a canvas for his work. Marcel reaches out to strangers on the internet, engaging them in conversations about their mental health. If he senses someone isn't doing well, he gets in his truck, drives to them, has a talk, and they leave their mark on his truck. What motivates Marcel to do this? The heartbreaking tragedy he endured on March 26 several years ago when he found his daughter in the garage, having taken her own life. Determined to prevent others from suffering a similar fate, Marcel has become a grief and trauma specialist. He's transformed his pain into purpose and his trauma into tools.Marcel is a man with an unshakable mission to offer love, support, and help to those who need it. His dedication to saving lives is born from the heart-wrenching experience of not being able to save his own daughter. Marcel is a remarkable human being doing incredible work, and we invite you to join us, Marcel, and The Jar for another real conversation with real people. In South Phoenix, we had the pleasure of meeting our next guest, Dan Collins, a true product of the Southwest Chicago area. Dan shared some insights into what it was like growing up in the heart of the Midwest, which offered him a somewhat typical Midwestern childhood experience. As the only boy in the family, Dan's upbringing had its share of unique experiences. His father was a dedicated union worker, which undoubtedly left an impression on young Dan. Around the sixth grade, the government implemented a busing program, reshuffling children from one part of the city to another for school. Dan found himself attending a Catholic school to avoid being bused into the inner city, but this move didn't shield him from youthful mischief. At the tender age of 13, Dan ventured into some questionable activities, including pilfering Valiums from his grandma's medicine cabinet and even getting caught selling "black beauties." This led to a tumultuous period that culminated in a 90-day stay in a psychiatric ward. His stay was etched in his memory, from the names of the counselors to the doctors who attended to him. After his release, he entered high school and fell into a life of gang involvement, distancing himself from his family.A pivotal moment came when Dan found his passion in sports, particularly track, and believed he was on the right track (pun intended). However, a series of mistakes led to him losing his eligibility, pushing him down a darker path. Despite enduring hardships, including struggles with alcoholism, Dan managed to achieve sobriety in 2013, embarking on a journey of recovery.Remarkably, Dan is now an ordained minister who dedicates his life to working with addicts and alcoholics, offering support and guidance. His story is one of struggle, resilience, redemption, and ultimately, service. In a picturesque and historic home nestled on the edges of Sonoita, we had the pleasure of meeting our next guest, Tami Blakely. Her stunning property, complete with an expansive view and a pack of six Ridgebacks, set the stage for our conversation.Tami is a true Arizona native, hailing from a family with deep roots in the state—fifth generation, to be precise. Her family's journey began with the ownership of the only original general store in their area. Over time, they transitioned into the oil and gas industry, becoming prominent players in the Wickenburg, Arizona region as the state developed. Our introduction to Tami came through another guest on the show, Terri Malloy. We had the privilege of participating in a three-day equine therapy retreat at the Blakely Ranch, an experience that left a profound impact on us. Equine therapy, for those unfamiliar, is a powerful and transformative healing modality. It allows clients to communicate and connect with horses in profound ways, leading to personal growth and insights.Tami's role in this retreat was multi-faceted. First and foremost, she's a bona fide cowgirl, contributing a deep knowledge of equine interactions. Secondly, her coaching skills are top-notch, helping clients navigate their emotions and experiences during the therapy. The third, and perhaps most remarkable, attribute is her gift of sensing people's emotional states and the presence of things seen and unseen. Our conversation with Tami was nothing short of fascinating. She effortlessly responded to our questions, often revealing the answer before we finished reading them. Her personal story, while tragic and at times unimaginable in its hardships, has shaped her into the extraordinary person she is today. She's estranged from her family due to circumstances beyond her control, yet she's taken every life challenge and turned it into her life's purpose. Tami Blakely serves as a shining example of how to transform adversity into strength and purpose. Join us, Tami, and The Jar in this captivating episode that showcases the power of resilience and the human spirit. We had the privilege of meeting Jon Clark on a picturesque Wednesday in Albuquerque, where he resides against the backdrop of a golf course. Interestingly, Jon's roots trace back to a small New Mexico town that famously changed its name through a game show contest, leading to its transformation into Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. His father managed a restaurant, and the family eventually moved to Albuquerque, where his father delved into the world of technology by opening a small computer store that sold a revolutionary new product called Apple computers.Jon's journey continued as he graduated in 2008 with a degree in industrial engineering. He had an older sister who raised three kids, and though his family initially adhered to the Catholic faith, it gradually faded away from their lives. At the age of 17, Jon experienced a skiing accident that left him with a spinal injury. Over time, the injury escalated, bringing along excruciating pain. Despite the agony, he persisted through life – education, work, even moving to Seattle. Eventually, however, the pain became overwhelming, and he found himself back at his parents' home on Christmas morning, unable to bear the burden alone. The unwavering support of his parents was a cornerstone for Jon during these tough times. They sold their home to secure a more accessible ranch-style house where Jon could navigate more easily. It was during this period that his father introduced him to a book titled "Pain-Free Posture Handbook," a gesture that initially triggered Jon's skepticism about a pain-free life.In a serendipitous turn of events, Jon's life intersected with psilocybin. While searching for a used CPAP machine on Facebook Marketplace, a man shared his own problems with Jon and sent him home with some mushrooms to try. Intrigued and unfamiliar, Jon sampled a small dose and felt a reduction in his bodily spasms.Encouraged by this, he embarked on a more substantial psilocybin experience, aided by his newfound understanding of the book on posture therapy. He visualized the human structure and incorporated exercises from the book, ultimately creating a healing sequence tailored to his needs. Now a certified posture therapy instructor, Jon has defied the odds. He's emerged from his wheelchair, discarded his crutches, and embraced an active lifestyle that includes golfing and frisbee golf. His remarkable journey showcases the power of visualization and determination. Join us in The Jar as Jon shares this inspiring chapter of his life. We had the pleasure of meeting Kelley Koehler at her massage studio – a space that resonates with intention, warmth, and mindfulness. As she welcomed us, it was clear that Kelley has undergone a remarkable transformation. She radiates a sense of self-love and maturity that contrasts vividly with the person she was not too long ago.Kelley's roots trace back to suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her father's occupation as a racecar driver and her mother's self-absorption marked her upbringing. The divorce of her parents during her third-grade year led to a series of moves orchestrated by her mother's quest for work opportunities. From Arkansas to Wisconsin, the family navigated small towns as her mother hustled for a better life. The shift from her Wisconsin small town to the bustling urban environment of Houston during her teenage years was a jarring experience. Kelley, who had been accustomed to being the center of attention in her small-town schools, suddenly found herself a small fish in a much larger pond. Coping with this culture shock and the ensuing struggle to fit in, Kelley turned to alcohol, drugs, and other means of self-soothing.However, her life took a different direction. She left home at 17, and by the time she turned 18, she was in rehab. Surprisingly, her challenges weren't centered around drugs or alcohol; instead, she realized that her core issue was codependency and the need to learn how to navigate life independently from the influence of her narcissistic mother.Kelley's journey included six marriages and six children. The cumulative experiences brought her to a moment of profound self-discovery. Now, in this beautiful chapter of her life, she has embraced self-love and has surrendered to her own identity. She has learned to stand strong in her individuality and no longer seeks someone or something external to complete her. Join us as we bear witness to Kelley's inspiring transformation, a narrative that unfolds with each step she takes through The Jar.For more of The Jar, visit:Website: https://www.thejar.live/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTqB1dhDvl0Oh505ysdxTgFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/podcast.thejarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejar_podcast/Disclaimer: The views stated in this episode are our guest's opinions and do not represent the views, beliefs or opinions of The Jar Podcast. We had the privilege of meeting our next guest, David Andrew, on a Thursday afternoon in Santa Fe. His apartment, located just off the main drag, still carried the sense of a recent transition. As we parked the van and began unloading our gear, the door to his apartment swung open, and there stood David, shirtless, waving us in with a casual declaration that he had just woken up. After getting settled, we took a moment to chat and even shared a morning cigarette.David hails from northern New York, a child of the countryside, born in '66. His early years were marked by the loss of his father, an MD, when he was just three. He recalls those formative memories – the juxtaposition of his father's death and his birthday – and the long darkness that followed. His mother eventually remarried, introducing a stepfather into David's life. Like many of us, David endured the routine of high school and college, a job in a tie that felt like his personal version of hell. The turning point came when he abandoned that life and headed west. His first job, washing dishes at the Grand Canyon resort, brought a sense of freedom that he hadn't experienced before. It was during his time at the Grand Canyon that David experienced his first taste of love – a love that was transient and left him feeling like he had fallen into a pit. As this chapter of his life came to a close, he made his way to Lubbock, Texas, where he spent over two decades building a life. He became deeply involved in the community theater scene, and those years shaped his identity, at least until he grew disillusioned with his job and the path he had been on. This pivotal moment in Lubbock marked the beginning of David's journey to Santa Fe, where he hoped to discover his next steps.David is a profoundly intriguing individual, and his complexity invites compassion. His interview is raw and unfiltered, peppered with strong language and directness – a genuine conversation with a real person. In 2005, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a factor that has influenced his life's trajectory. During our conversation, David shares a heartfelt plea to his daughter, asking for forgiveness for not being the best parent while grappling with his mental health struggles.Join us as we listen to David's story in his own words, a narrative that navigates through his highs and lows, triumphs and challenges, as he continues to forge his path within the pages of The Jar. He transformed one of his home's bedrooms into a dorm-like space, inviting individuals to stay for a modest fee while immersing themselves in training and learning. We step into the world of our next guest, Blaine Bailey, right in the heart of downtown Durango, at a vibrant coworking space known as The Hive.Blaine's story begins in the quiet landscape of small-town Arkansas, where he spent his childhood with his sister and their engineer father. As he grew, his perspectives on spirituality took an agnostic turn. With two years of college under his belt, he set his sights on a ski bum's dream, an aspiration that led him to the mountains until an unfortunate shoulder injury put an end to that chapter.Returning to Arkansas, Blaine found his calling in culinary school, embracing the art of food and flavors. His journey eventually led him to Wisconsin, where he contributed to the management of a small restaurant, honing his skills and exploring his passion.A fateful call from a friend in Durango, Colorado, opened a new door for Blaine. What seemed like a gentle offer of work in a kitchen evolved into a pivotal moment—he was thrust into the bustling heart of the culinary world. As he navigated the pressures of the industry, he was not immune to its vices—late nights, substances, and stress. While the exhilaration of the culinary world was undeniable, Blaine felt a growing desire to step away. The turning point came with a tragedy—an encounter with the impact of addiction firsthand when a fellow chef succumbed to heroin in 2015. This heart-wrenching experience ignited Blaine's determination to channel his energy into something meaningful.Drawing from his own mental health journey, Blaine transformed his pain into purpose. He founded "Therapy for Chefs," a nonprofit dedicated to promoting mental health awareness within the food service industry. Today, Blaine is fully immersed in managing "In the Weeds," working to create a healthier environment for culinary professionals, where their well-being is valued as much as their craft.Blaine's story is a testament to the power of turning adversity into change, of taking one's own struggles and weaving them into a greater purpose. The hyper-focus that accompanies his condition allows him to immerse himself completely, achieving a state of meditation that excludes all external distractions, even his own sense of self, during his grueling 24-hour runs.Miguel's journey also encountered a significant hurdle during his time as a student at UCLA, when he temporarily lost feeling in his legs and found himself on crutches and even a wheelchair. This unexpected twist, however, didn't deter him from pursuing his passion and rising to his remarkable accomplishments.Beyond his role as a professional athlete, Miguel also works as a medical interpreter, a career he deeply values. We have the privilege of meeting our next guest, Alejandra, in her apartment in Houston, where she resides with Hymie Chapa, our previous guest. It's a unique opportunity to conduct separate interviews with two individuals who share the same living space, allowing them to learn more about each other's experiences.Alejandra, a Colombian by birth, was born in Houston but was taken back to Colombia by her mother at a young age. However, at three years old, she returned to Houston in 1994. Growing up, Alejandra discovered that her father was not her biological father, and her mother had kept this secret from her. This revelation brought about a complex situation, as Alejandra grappled with the truth and began to break free from her mother's control.Discovering such a truth can turn one's world upside down and unravel the fabric of their identity. For Alejandra, learning about her real father, who she is now in contact with, adds another layer of complexity. Her father, who knows of her existence and has followed her life from afar, dreams of a reunion. However, he remains a stranger to Alejandra, leaving her guarded and confused, filled with both love and hope, yet also uncertainty.Despite the complications in her personal life, Alejandra was fortunate to have a strong family culture, with her grandparents playing a significant role in her upbringing. Interestingly, her mother, recognizing the importance of therapy, has had Alejandra in therapy since a young age, with the same therapist for the past 20 years.A turning point in Alejandra's life occurred when she was caught engaging in a sexual act in the high school stairwell. Her mother promptly transferred her to a private school, where she thrived academically and began to blossom. This experience ignited her passion for academics, leading her to pursue a psychology degree and subsequently a master's degree. Currently, Alejandra is preparing for her doctoral studies, further deepening her understanding of the human mind.In terms of spirituality, Alejandra's journey took an interesting turn during her college years when a class on the Old Testament led her to become agnostic or even atheist. It will be intriguing to follow her ongoing spiritual exploration and how it shapes her perspective on life.Alongside her academic pursuits, Alejandra is a multifaceted individual. She is a coach, guiding others in their personal development journeys. As a nutritionist, she understands the importance of balanced nourishment and empowers others to make informed choices for their health. Additionally, Alejandra is a competitive bodybuilder, dedicating herself to the discipline and artistry of sculpting her physique.Join us as we delve into Alejandra's story, navigating the complexities of her family dynamics, personal growth, spiritual journey, and her diverse pursuits as a coach, nutritionist, and competitive bodybuilder. Our next guest, Paul VanSteenis, welcomes us into his exquisite home in a beautiful subdivision in Houston. The house is adorned with elements from various cultures, reflecting the well-traveled life of his executive father. As we settle around the kitchen table, we anticipate that Paul's story will be an extraordinary one—a life filled with captivating side stories and a depth that could easily fill the pages of a book.Paul's journey began in Seal Beach, California, where he proudly describes himself as a "bad, bad boy." He was expelled from multiple schools, driven by an inherent inclination to do things his way, with little regard for the consequences. This rebellious attitude became Paul's signature style, a constant throughout his life. While it often brought him challenges, he has since learned to channel this energy in a positive manner, leading him to build a successful business and brand. In a lighthearted moment, Paul shares a recent incident involving a letter he received from Oral Roberts University, informing him that they were ready to issue his college degree from 18 years ago. However, he had apparently missed a tennis class and needed to complete it in order to receive his degree—an amusing reminder of the twists and turns life can take.Beyond the funny anecdotes, Paul's story revolves around the choices he made. He deliberately chose to associate himself with the "cool kids," the bad kids, the edgy ones. However, he recognized that a pivotal shift occurred when he started spending time with the "nerds." These new connections and influences led him on a path of personal growth and transformation.Paul candidly shares his past struggles, including being arrested by a SWAT team and battling addiction to heroin for a period of time. However, today he has successfully established a marketing company. He emphasizes the importance of valuing human life and striving to improve oneself by just one percent each day. Above all, he advocates for choosing to surround oneself with those who inspire intellectual curiosity and growth—the "nerds" who can truly make a positive impact on our lives. As we embark on this episode, we look forward to delving deeper into Paul's unique and multifaceted journey. His story serves as a reminder that our choices shape our destinies, and that by embracing personal growth and meaningful connections, we can overcome challenges and build a fulfilling life. We are honored to meet our next guest, Renee Hollar, at her cozy apartment in Flour Bluff, just outside Corpus Christi, Texas. Despite the warmth of her smile and friendly personality, Renee's life has been incredibly complex and challenging, with struggles she has faced and overcome.Renee's journey began in Gainesville, Texas, at around 4 and a half years old, when her parents divorced. She went to live with her father and his new wife, but the connection with her stepmom never truly formed, leaving her with a sense of abandonment and unrequited love. The pain intensified when her brother, who had returned to the father's house for a while, molested her when she was just 10 years old. Holding onto this traumatic secret for a long time, she eventually shared it, only to find her trust broken and her pain dismissed. At 16, Renee married her sweetheart and became pregnant, but the relationship turned abusive, leading her to escape back home. This pattern of entering relationships, having children, and returning home repeated itself six times with six different fathers. Renee describes herself as a rebel who didn't want to conform or fit in; she lived a goth lifestyle and even experienced homelessness in Los Angeles. Throughout her story, she realizes that many of her life's difficulties were consequences of her own choices. She deeply regrets some of the decisions she made and urges others to learn from her experiences. In addition to raising six children, Renee also had a couple of abortions. She shares a poignant encounter she had at a clinic, which had a significant impact on her life and opened up a spiritual door for her. This encounter brought about positive changes, providing Renee with peace as she reflects on her life.We join Renee and The Jar in listening to this beautiful and powerful story of a life filled with chaos and struggles, but also resilience and growth. Renee's journey through motherhood has been filled with challenges, but she has taken ownership of her past mistakes, and she now embraces the present For more of The Jar, visit:Website: https://www.thejar.live/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTqB1dhDvl0Oh505ysdxTgFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/podcast.thejarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejar_podcast/Disclaimer: The views stated in this episode are our guest's opinions and do not represent the views, beliefs or opinions of The Jar Podcast.
