I'm thrilled to have you join us in this episode as we dive into the powerful world of storytelling with my dear friend, Ally Fallon. Today, Ally will share some incredible insights into the emotional health benefits of writing our own stories. She's here to guide us through the process of getting started and tapping into the transformative power of putting our experiences down on paper. Ally Fallon isn't just any guest; she's an accomplished author, speaker, and the founder of Find Your Voice—a community dedicated to helping people express themselves through writing. With her extensive background, including ghostwriting 11 books and authoring impactful works like The Power of Writing It Down and Indestructible, Ally brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. Her latest book, Write Your Story, introduces an 8-step framework that helps anyone craft a meaningful and captivating narrative. Join us as we explore why writing matters, the unexpected benefits it holds for our spiritual, emotional, and physical health, and how you can start making yourself the hero of your own story, even if you've never written a word before. Join Ally and I as we talk about: Why writing our story matters Surprising spiritual, emotional, and health benefits to writing our story Where to start if you have never written before Making yourself the hero of your story How to write compelling hooks Favorite quotes: (5:17 Audio) “The main reason writing our story matters is that the act of putting our story on paper teaches us who we are, what our life is about, what we are here for, why we matter, what makes our life so significant, and what is the most interesting thing about us. Beyond that, when we share that story it also allows us to connect with other people who are in our lives.” (13:37 Audio) “It is really so powerful when you start to put your story down on the page. You just see it in another way.” (15:33 Audio) “Every story is interesting if it's told in the right way.” (17:03 Audio) “When you know how to write a great hook, you know how to command human attention, and when you can command human attention, you can give people information that is really important to them.” (20:45 Audio) “We have a lot more agency in resolving our stories than we think we do because most personal stories resolve when the internal problem resolves rather than the external problem.” Coaching this week: How to Quit Letting Guilt Weigh You Down In coaching on this episode, I highlight the importance of using feelings of guilt as a gateway to deeper self-reflection, suggesting that these emotions can reveal significant underlying issues, like past unresolved experiences or current unmet needs. I encourage you to engage with guilt, using it as an opportunity to understand and address the root causes, which will ultimately help you find resolution and peace. Amy starts off with '4 Things Gratitude' sharing with you 4 things she's currently thankful for & hopefully through her gratitude you'll learn about some things to check out & then she shares some words of wisdom from Ally Fallon that will lead living life with more purpose & confidence. FIRST THING: She's selling her house & here's the YouTube video she references "Declutter Your Home: The Ultimate Guide to Selling Fast | How to Get Rid of Your Stuff." (this is helpful for anyone...not just if you're selling your home!) SECOND THING: Amy changed the energy of her home to an 8. What does that mean?? Well, read this Address Numerology blog that Amanda wrote and listen to this episode where Amanda told Amy about why she needs to change her home from a 2 to an 8 and it will all make more sense! THIRD THING: Amy has felt so pulled together lately thanks to her new Yellow Rose by Kendra Scott jewelry. All of the pieces are so cute, cowgirl vibes & ranch inspired because 'country is cool again!' Girls trip to Austin anytime soon? Go by the Yellow Rose store hat bar and get custom hats to always remember the trip....so fun! FOURTH THING: Ally Fallon's book launch party was on Tuesday night, so Write Your Story: A Simple Framework to Understand Yourself, Your Story, and Your Purpose in the World is officially out in the world and ready for people to read. Donald Miller read his forward for the book at the party and I loved his opening lines: "Years ago, I met a psychologist who gave me some advice about choosing friends. She said this: 'choose people who have a story to tell, rather than those who tell stories.'" Such a good quote. Ally feels strongly that writing our stories helps us understand ourselves so we can live with more purpose and confidence. FUN FACT: Ally's Write Your Story Podcast is on Amy's network, so she's highlighting an episode that Ally put up last month that further dives into why writing our stories is so helpful....even if we never plan on anyone else reading it. This is such a good listen If you feel like you're telling the same story over and over again....like the details may change (new boss, new partner, new hometown) but the cycle of the story keepings repeating itself. You are Not Broken! You may feel that you are. You may struggle with what you are conditioned to believe about yourself. If Jean and I can leave you with one message in this episode it is that you are not broken.Living unapologetically authentic means allowing us to be who we truly are. It is filtering out what we've been conditioned to believe about ourselves and learning to overcome the true source of our struggles within...fear of judgement or rejection.Jean Tien is a reformed corporate climber that fumbled her way through life, her words, until she realized that "happily ever after doesn't automatically happen when you start to make more money or climb the corporate ladder. She says that following this age-old formula for success didn't work because it wasn't allowing her to be herself."In this episode we unpack the success formula that Jean developed for overcoming her fears and living unapologetically authentic. Additionally, we discuss minor things like: cancel culture, fear of judgement, deficiencies in self-esteem, etc. Listen in and take notes to help you become who you are meant to be. It's not always who you think today that it is!Jean's book The S.U.C.C.E.S.S Method will be out in December or January.Support the show

Today on Beyond the Green Line, Shonelle Gleeson-Willey talks with Kurt Laboyrie, an area manager at the Soil Conservation Service. Kurt is also a past member of the International Erosion Control Association Board, and recently received a Change Makers achievement from the organization Future Women.Kurt has always lived on the coast and spent time in nature, where he developed an understanding of how sediment and water moved. He earned his masters' degree in Coastal Planning and Management, then began his career in erosion control in sand dunes. He worked on dune stabilization and natural area management, fire trail and asset protection, zone construction and maintenance, creek line remediation projects, contaminated land rehabilitation, and design and construction of drainage structures. He also held advisory roles as a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control.Kurt now manages numerous civil and environmental construction works, serving local landholders, state, federal and corporate clients. Maintaining his focus on coastal environmental management, Kurt has kept a passion for environmental legacy, always striving to contribute to lasting change. The Soil Conservation Service is a government contractor and also deals in the public space. Kurt shares his insights on how to build good teams for highly varied jobs, and how those diverse teams enable the company to fix problems for clients and take on challenges and risks that not everyone would be willing to.Kurt and Shonelle also chat about Kurt's desire to see gender parity and equal pay in the construction industry. Many top companies have a measure of equality at the highest levels, while the construction industry is behind in this and has been traditionally very male-dominated. Kurt shares what a single individual in the system can do to encourage more diversity and equity in their work culture.Kurt recounts a contaminated land rehab project that his team recently completed, which comprised of both terrestrial and aquatic rehabilitation. Older boat paint containing lead and other harmful metals was effecting a populated area's oysters, fish and potentially humans, and it was Kurt's job to come up with a way to get all the harmful material out of the harbor and send it to a registered site. He talks about the importance of the staging equipment they used, how they implemented two sediment curtains into the process, why they used a dredge, and how they pumped contaminated water into dewatering bags, sealed to limit human exposure. We'll hear Kurt speak on the unique challenges of working in the coastal environment, and share how he'd love to see better alignment on Best Practice across states and legislations in order to see LGA's working together for the most efficient solutions. What you’ll learn about in this episode: Why the first step in developing cultural competence is to “see self”, the secret to more effectively understand yourself and understand others Sara offers a simple exercise that can help you better define and understand your culture, and she explains how uses this question in training to create an eye-opening experience Why it is important to differentiate your cultural descriptors by whether they are frames or filters, and how frames and filters differ Sara defines her personal frames, such as being White, cisgender, and female, and her filters, such as being extroverted, competitive, and a woman small business owner Why identifying your filters is critical in seeing yourself and understanding how you relate to the world and the people around you Why paying attention to your interactions throughout your day can help you see how your filters often make your decisions for you Why it is so important to understand your own culture and see yourself, and how this can help you better understand others when you first understand yourself What is Your Culture? Understand Yourself and Understand Others What is your culture? It’s a deceptively simple question…but the answers you arrive at can help you understand yourself and understand others in a more personal way. Take a moment to think about it and list as many identifying factors about your culture as you can. Now, let’s talk about the difference between frames and filters. Frames are descriptors about you, immutable facts such as your ethnicity, your age, your gender and your sexual orientation. Filters, however, are the ways you interact with the world, such as being highly focused, introverted or patient. Your frames are defined traits, but your filters are subconscious tools you use to make decisions. It’s within these subconscious filters that you can get to the heart of how you interact with difference. These filters inform many of the choices and decisions you make, and truly “seeing” yourself and your filters clearly can enable you to understand yourself and understand others better. How You Show Up in the World We often allow our subconscious minds to make quick decisions for us; it’s a natural process and one that generally happens in the background without our active mental input. However, developing cultural competence requires us to take a look at these filters on a conscious level. When you understand the filters through which you interact with the world, you can begin to consciously change your filters to better suit your interactions. This can be transformative, and it’s the key to improving your skill in cultural competence. Understand Yourself and Understand Others In this week’s episode of the What’s The Difference podcast, I gave an example of trying to teach fish about land and air. Fish only have experience with water, and so teaching them about land and air would mean first teaching them about their own environment so that they can identify and recognize how land and air differ from their experiences in water. There are parallels between teaching fish about land and air and recognizing and learning about difference in people and in cultures. For us to understand someone else’s very different experiences in life, we must first create a reference point by understanding ourselves. Then we can begin to see and acknowledge the difference. Here’s an exercise to try: in the coming week, really begin to pay attention to your filters and how they inform your interactions and choices. Observe yourself and your moment-to-moment thoughts, feelings and behaviors, and try to recognize when your filters come into play. In doing so, you may begin to recognize patterns in yourself that can truly help you understand yourself and understand others on a more effective level. How To Understand People, Understand Yourself, And Get What You Want Out Of Life by Will Freemen
Co-hosts Jan Rutherford and Jim Vaselopulos interview Josh Spodek, an Adjunct Professor at NYU, leadership coach, workshop leader for Columbia Business School, columnist for Inc., founder of Spodek Academy, and author of Leadership Step by Step (launching February 2017). Josh talks about how academic teachings failed to prepare him for entrepreneurship, and how learning a theory is insufficient without practicing it. They discuss the critical need for emotional intelligence, and psychological safety, and how they can be developed, and the techniques Josh uses to strengthen them. Listen in to learn more about leadership practices, releasing passion, changing beliefs, and nurturing teams. Key Takeaways [2:59] Josh is concerned that academic education is emotionally and socially passive. At Ivy League schools, Josh learned was intellectually challenged, but he was not taught socially and emotionally. Josh had trouble working with others when he founded his first company. His leadership was ineffective during the recession, and investors forced him out as CEO. [10:34] Reading books, and learning theory, but not learning how to practice the theory, you might as well read about weights, but not actually lifting weights. Josh wanted a place to teach leadership. For Spodek Academy, Josh researched fields that show leadership, to learn from their techniques. He created exercises, tested and refined them, to teach sensitivity to others’ emotions. [18:32] Joshua cites exercises by Marshall Goldsmith, such as “FeedForward,” and “No, But, However,” that taught him so much about listening and empathy. Small changes in behavior change your worldview. Josh organized Goldsmith’s exercises, and others, into a progression of learning, with each exercise being more challenging, and all tied together. [19:58] One exercise is to write down your inner monolog, the voice inside your head — not what you’re thinking about, but the actual words. A later exercise is to speak your inner monolog. That’s scary, because people hear it. It turns out to be authentic, and people respond genuinely. Further exercises are to write your mental model (what creates the inner monolog), and models of others. [25:12] We’ve all been hurt. When part of your identity is mocked, you can’t get rid of it, but you can hide it. We don’t get hurt by casual acquaintances, but by people close to us. We learn to close off our vulnerabilities. Leaders who learn to get people to get past vulnerability to share their passion can get them to engage in their work, for purposes about which they are passionate. [26:50] Jim talks about psychological safety, determined by Google’s Project Aristotle to be the number one key performance driver of high performing teams. With psychological safety, it is easier to have discussions in touch with your inner monolog. Josh says Laszlo Bock’s research at Google revealed the need for our educational system to educate to emotional intelligence. [29:47] Josh teaches adopting a challenging belief, in Unit 2 of Leadership Step by Step. Unit 1 is Understand Yourself. Unit 2 is Lead Yourself. A leader needs to know that beliefs affect how people view the world. Two people, looking at one thing, see two things. To change motivation, change belief. Joshua describes changing the “dandelion belief,” to the “burning building belief.” [33:36] If you can look at a difficult problem from a different perspective, and solve it that way, you have an additional way to solve problems, or more intelligence. Helping someone change a belief is simpler than convincing them of something. The progression in the book is, understand your belief, adopt a challenging belief, understand other’s belief, and help them adopt a belief. [37:48] Visiting North Korea taught Josh about himself. Seeing pictures of Kim Jong Il everywhere, and tuning them out, made him wonder what he tunes out here in the U.S. It hit him, that advertising and brands are what he tunes out. We incorporate into our reality things that are actually aspects of our external culture. Sometimes it takes an outsider perspective to see it. [40:48] Josh teaches entrepreneurs, when they find an industry where everybody has the same fixed beliefs, it is a huge opportunity, especially when the beliefs do not match the interests of the market. The more fixed the belief, the more the opportunity. Google is an example. Before Google were simple site aggregators, like Alta Vista. Google tried to sell “search” for $1 million. No takers!
