Reckless Kelly boasts an indomitable career all their own. Led by brothers Willy (vocals/guitar) and Cody Braun (vocals/fiddle/mandolin/harmonica), they're often referred to as an “alternative country-rock” outfit, but in truth they're much more than that broad description otherwise implies. The group first formed in Stanley, Idaho in February 1996 and then moved toAustin, Texas, where they quickly became one of the leading lights of that fabled music scene. The Brauns, who got their start by touring with their dad in his Western swing band, Muzzie Braun and the Boys, also include lead guitarist Casey Pollock, bass guitarist Chris Schelske and drummer Jay Nazz. Of course, anytime a label is put on a particular artist or ensemble, it tends to confine them to a particular genre. Braun offers his own perspective on the ramifications of being typecast in any one particular way. “It's been interesting to watch the terminology evolve over the course of the last 30 years,” he once told an interviewer. “It seems like the terms have changed to fit the artists, and not so much the other way around. The term ‘country music' got hijacked to the point that actual country artists are now called ‘Americana,' as well as bluegrass, folk, and most things that don't really have a home on commercial radio these days.The folks at Americana radio have done a great job of keeping the genre rooted in real honest music, and for the most part, they've managed to keep the truck - nuts country crowd out of it. Let's start here. Cody Canada—our latest guest on The Load Out Music Podcast—is many things but he is most certainly not some radio DJ in Canada, in the event you were curious.  No, he's a pioneering figure in red dirt music and one of the more respected musicians in songwriting circles today. But many casual music fans might be unfamiliar with his name, instead knowing his work from the legendary band that he founded and led from 1994 – 2010: Cross Canadian Ragweed.  For those unfamiliar with red dirt music, it's a genre stuck between country and rock-and-roll named for the color of the Oklahoma soil. It has featured acts such as Jason Boland & the Stragglers, Stoney Larue, Charlie Robison, the Turnpike Troubadours, and the Randy Rogers Band—but has also extended to the likes of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Steve Earle, Ray Wylie Hubbard and those who have built the Texas country-rock scene.  Canada got hooked on music when he attended a George Strait show while living in Texas as a kid. The next day he asked his parents for a guitar and it was on. In his teen years, Canada was insulated, a loner, he freely admits he didn't have many friends. His family then relocated to Yukon, Oklahoma, and his obsession with the regional outlaw country music and the Seattle sounds of Nirvana and Pearl Jam only deepened.  Music became his thing—his only thing—and in 1994, Canada put together a band with Matt Weidemann (bass), Grady Cross (guitar), and Randy Ragsdale (percussion). Cross Canadian Ragweed was born and one of their first gigs was playing a on a glorious trailer on “Czech Day” in Yukon—where they played for six hours. The band would move to Stillwater, Oklahoma, and in 1998 put out its first album, Carney. But it wasn't until Ragweed's 2002 self-titled album featuring Canada's song “17” that the band broke through. Then things really went next level in 2004 with the album Soul Gravy. It debuted at number five on Billboard's country charts—despite Canada wanting to be as far from Nashville country as he possibly can to this day—and featured the hit songs “Sick and Tired” with Lee Ann Womack and “Alabama.”  But like happens in most bands, tensions rose in Ragweed—a topic Canada does not shy away from—and the band dissolved in 2010.  In 2011, Canada and bassist Jeremy Plato formed Cody Canada & the Departed, releasing the album This Is Indian Land, a collection of covers written by Oklahoma songwriters. The band ultimately minimized to simply, The Departed, and over the past decade, Canada has moved forward with the band as well as on solo projects, writing music and reaping the rewards of a legacy he's built over 30 years. In 2020, MusicFest, the esteemed festival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, paid tribute to Canada with live recorded performances from his songwriting peers, releasing the album The Years: A MusicFest Tribute to Cody Canada. Ragweed also released the reboot of “Soul Gravy” in 2022. Womack returned to sing on the new version along with performances from some key musicians who helped shape the original album including Randy Rogers and Ray Wiley Hubbard. And just recently, Canada joined longtime friends Micky and Gary Braun (of Micky and the Motorcars) on the “Acoustic Healing Tour.”  All along, in spite of being a pioneer in red dirt music, family remains the bedrock of Canada's life. He and his wife Shannon lead a School of Rock in their hometown of New Braunfels, Texas, where they are raising their children Dierks Cobain Canada (named for friend Kierks Bentley and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain) and Willy Vedder Canada (named for Willy Braun of the band Reckless Kelly and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder).   So, sit back for a great conversation on The Load Out Music Podcast with an incredibly accomplished musician and fascinating character in Cody Canada.

On Episode 88, I'm joined by Reckless Kelly lead vocalist and chief lyricist Willy Braun. This year, the pioneering Americana Country outfit is doing a first with the release of American Jackpot / American Girls, two 10-song full-length albums released the same day. Much as the titles allude, the 20 songs of American Jackpot and American Girls give Braun and company ample of space to explore a multitude of American themes without ever settling in on a "Rah Rah Rah" tired trope. Rather, songs seek out the true essence of the American Spirit with songs about Jackie Robinson, Tom Petty, grandfathers, Grand Canyon mule rules, Western exploration, rural living, a necessary reminder that we're a country of immigrants, the search for a sense of belonging, and that longing for home. Over the course of this hour, Braun and I talk at length about the recording of their latest album (due out Friday, May 22), songwriting, the affects of the Coronavirus on touring bands (and festival curators), playing drums, and working with the likes of fellow Idaho native Jeff Crosby, Jamie Lin Wilson, Jack Ingram, and Bruce Robison (and various multiple collaborators during The Next Waltz sessions). Con 81 años, acaba de publicar Solo, un título perfecto para estar fechas de introspección que supone su vigésimo primer álbum de estudio en una carrera que ya ocupa siete décadas. Schmit en esta deliciosa versión de "A Child’s Claim to Fame" nos retrotrae al segundo álbum de Buffalo Springefield, allá por 1967, cuando escuchamos por primera vez aquella composición de Richie Furay, Y, por supuesto, nos recuerda los días del ahora bajista de los Eagles como miembro de Poco, cuando el tema apareció como parte de un medley, entre “Hard Luck” y “Pickin Up The Pieces”, en el álbum Deliverin’ el tercero de la banda y el primero en vivo. En esta mirada por el retrovisor podemos escuchar incluso a Rusty Young tocando el banjo, el dobro y la guitarra acústica. La herencia de los grandes pioneros se hace presente gracias a bandas como The Sunset Canyoneers, que debutan con el álbum High In The Sky, en cuyo tema central nos recuerdan lo que es estar en la carretera viviendo como un espíritu libre. Sam Blasucci y Clay Finch son Mapache, un dúo de tintes fronterizos que comparte historias de aventuras en las que, en el fondo, siempre se anhela el regreso a casa. From Liberty Street lleva una semana en el mercado y es el resultado de compartir con sus vecinos de Echo Park, en Los Ángeles, el espacio creativo en el que exploran nuevos sonidos comunitarios. El disco, además, establece ese encuentro natural con el folclore tradicional y los sabores hispanos, ejemplo de lo que supone vivir en el sur de California y de la importancia de la cultura mejicana en ese entorno. De hecho hay algunas canciones dentro de este trabajo interpretadas directamente en español, aunque “Right Between The Lines”, uno de sus cortes más destacados, no es un ejemplo. A pesar de esta situación inusual, las novedades siguen llegando hasta el tiempo de TOMA UNO y aquí está "Thinkin 'Bout You All Night", un nuevo tema de Reckless Kelly que formará parte de su próximo álbum American Jackpot. Trata sobre la facilidad de obsesionarse con los ex tras una ruptura. Es una canción viajera compuesta en la carretera y en los diversos estados por los que el quinteto pasó durante una larga gira. Así Willy Braun, su compositor, dice que Colorado, California y Oregón fueron los lugares que conformaron un tema al que se incorporó en piano de Bukka Allen y la guitarra de Chris Masterson. American Jackpot es parte de un álbum doble, junto con American Girls, y supone el primer lanzamiento de la banda desde Sunset Motel de hace cinco años. Quien recuerde a Lou Ford o a los Loudermilks recordarán el espíritu poético de los hermanos Edwards, Chad y Lee, afincados en Charlotte, en Carolina del Norte. Así ha ocurrido en el último cuarto de siglo con su intento de poner al día con una finura especial las esencias del country rock. A. Lee Edwards bebe en los orígenes de la vieja escuela y sus composiciones tienen la seguridad de quien ha estabilizados sus cimientos y les ha dado consistencia. Escribe de forma inteligente y es multidimensional. Con su base en Franklin, también en Carolina del Norte, Alan Lee Edwards nos ha dejado un tema de la sobriedad y el músculo de "South of Sylva", que nos permite seguir confiando en su ya probado talento. Este domingo cerramos nuestro encuentro sonoro de cada fin de semana con Tracy Grammer, pareja artística del fallecido Dave Carter, con quien formó uno de los dúos de folk más recomendables de la última década del siglo XX. Nacida en Florida pero crecida en el sur de California, Tracy decidió seguir su carrera en solitario desde la inesperada muerte en 2002 de su socio debido a un infarto y hasta la fecha ha publicado cuatro trabajos en los que conserva el gusto por los sonidos clásicos, llenos de frescura y con un evidente tinte emocional. Así queda reflejado en su reciente versión "If I Needed You" una canción del inmortal Townes Van Zandt que ha recibido las más variopintas versiones, pero que en este caso conserva fielmente el espíritu con el que fue creada. In the late 90’s and early 2000’s as Red Dirt and Texas Country Music was making it’s way north into my home state of Kansas some of the first bands I saw live were those like The Great Divide, Jason Boland & The Stragglers and Cross Canadian Ragweed.  Through those 3 bands, me and my cohorts were gradually introduced to many of the other great acts coming out of that scene as the movement was really starting to gain some steam. Therefore, I assume that my first experience with becoming familiar with the Austin band, Reckless Kelly was much like many of you.  Ragweed’s live show at that time almost always included the Reckless Kelly tune, “Crazy Eddie’s Last Hurrah”, which became known as a song that would bring the house down during Ragweed’s shows. As I started digging in to Reckless Kelly I found several other of their songs were also simply gems.  A couple of my own other personal favorites from the early Reckless days were “Hey Say May” and “Wild Western Windblown Band”. As Reckless Kelly’s career progressed, they solidified themselves as one of the most respected bands in the scene.  Their prowess as a group was recognized with Grammy nominations and later a Grammy win for their 2013 album “Long Night Moon.” Reckless Kelly is still releasing great stuff and in May, they will be releasing another 2- album project that, as you’ll hear in this interview with Willy Braun, he feels it’s their best yet. Willy c’est un profil curieux, passionné de lecture, de savoir, tout le temps en ébullition et avec qui il fait bon échanger. Il a été directeur général de France Digitale, aujourd’hui c’est un des cofondateurs de Daphni, le fonds d’investissement qu’il a créé notamment avec Marie Ekeland. Willy ne savait pas ce qu’il voulait faire, alors il a commencé par faire un peu de tout. Quand il était ado, il jouait à Warcraft et Counter Strike, les “vrais jeux”, et lisait des bouquins.Aujourd’hui, Willy est VC(venture capitalist). Il a créé Daphni, un fonds d'investissement cool qui investit dans de jeunes startups. Il nous parle de son parcours, de sa curiosité naturelle qui l’a poussé à toucher à tout et de la voie qu’il a trouvé pour l’instant.On parle investissement, levées de fonds et entrepreneuriat. Que faire quand on monte une startup ? On parle aussi bouquins : Tim Ferris, Never Eat Alone et autres hacks de productivité. Mais surtout, on est assis à la terrasse d’un café du sentier.
