"Creativity is healing." How do we tackle life's biggest questions? How do we reconcile our own childhood experiences? How do we navigate trauma, and how can we use our own knowledge and experiences to help others? In this episode, Emmeline sits down with the prolific playwright Serena Norr to talk about the ways in which art gives us agency. Serena shares how her childhood and her experiences as a mom have shaped her creative life--and tells us how she makes time in her busy schedule for creativity and how that time has transformed her life. They also talk in-depth about Serena's new, thought-provoking play, Agency for the Lost, and why the most important work we can do is the work of our hearts--not the work we think others want us to be doing. To learn more about Serena Norr, or to follow her creative journey, visit her official website or follow her on Instagram. You can also purchase tickets to see her new play, Agency for the Lost, through The Tank NYC or follow the play on Instagram. For behind-the-scenes information and more about Journey of an Artist, visit the Journey of Series official webpage, or follow Emmeline on social media at @EmmelineMusic.
Norman and I had the great pleasure of going to Central Works last night to see an exhilarating play, The Engine of our Disruption, a wicked comedy that focuses on the dangers and the callousness of software technology in our lives. And our guest, Patricia Milton, is the playwright. Ms. Milton is the resident playwright at Central Works, where her past three plays (The Victorian Ladies' Detective Collection, Bamboozled, and Enemies-Foreign and Domestic) were produced. She is a past President, Playwrights Center of San Francisco, and a member of Theatre Bay Area, Central Works Writing Group, and International Centre for Women Playwrights. Today, we talk about her upbringing, her method of playwrighting, her views on the state of regional theatre and where she sees herself in the future. Sharon Wallace is the President of ICWP, The International Centre for Women Playwrights. She reads from her play 1967: A Life of its Own. " I was inspired to write the play from a short story based on a personal reflection from my childhood memory of the 1967 Riot in Detroit, Michigan. I decided to build characters within the riot setting and develop a story within the conflict of the riot. My first experience with playwriting began as an adolescent adapting a story to a play. Many years later, studying acting at the National Black Theatre in Harlem, New York, I got into playwriting. I collaborated with my fellow actors to write a play titled "Ouch Outrageous Love." However, years later, I committed to the genre of playwriting when I completed my first play, 1967: A Life of its Own, as the creative component of a master's degree. The 2015 #WakingTheFeminists Campaign for gender equality in Irish theatre highlighted the marginalization of women in this industry and led to several significant initiatives that interrogated existing theater practices and pushed for inclusion and representation. Inspired by this movement, three academics, David Clare, Fiona McDonagh, and Justine Nakase, joined forces to co-edit a two-volume collection of scholarship on Irish women playwrights. In this episode, these three scholars discuss their new volumes entitled The Golden Thread: Irish Women Playwrights (1716-2016) (Liverpool UP 2021). Spanning from the eighteenth-century to the present day, The Golden Thread brings together the work of leading scholars in Irish theater and women's writing with that of theater practitioners to recover the often-hidden contributions of women playwrights. The collection develops a counter-canon of Irish playwrights that examines issues of class, sexuality, and disability. 2018.12.09 African women playwrights are creating some of the most vivid theatricalities, dialogues, poignant characterizations and situations, and politically and personally charged thematics written in Africa today. Along with their socially challenging and artistically innovative works, the plays written by African women nevertheless remain among the most underproduced and rarely published works on the continent and elsewhere. Why is this the case? This panel discussion provides insight into what concerns are evident in recent African drama, along with how women’s voices provide distinct, vital, and unfiltered spaces on Africa’s contemporary stages, spaces that are proving to be critical to envisioning the future of the continent and its diaspora. Speakers Dalia Basiouny, Assistant Professor of Theatre in the English Department, October 6 University Asiimwe Kawe, Award Winning Playwright, Performer and Producer, Individuals Celma Costa, Community Engagement Professional & Artist, Individuals Moderated by Robert Vorlicky, Associate Professor of Drama, NYU Tisch
Every year for the last five years, Milwaukee Renaissance Theaterworks hosts the Br!NK Festival as a way to uplift the voices and stories of women playwrights in Milwaukee and around the Midwest. This year a young woman named Nabra Nelson was one of two resident playwrights for the Br!NK Festival, which gave her an opportunity to turn a story close to her heart into a full-length play.

Playwright Tanya Barfield turns us onto research that puts the problem into painful detail.
This first show clocks in a little over 40 minutes (the first topic kind of got out of our hands), but we had a lot of fun recording it. Up first, we covered women’s playwrights; and then, we editorialized on the pros and cons of producing a new show and an ‘old chestnut’.See show notes here.

Last week we celebrated Geralyn as a playwright, reading three pieces from her play, The Prophet Freeman. This week we are celebrating her organizational skills. She has spent much of the past month and change working to insure that the International Centre for Women Playwrights celebration, starting next week, is a success. We won't talk about it next week, or the week after ... bad form, and all that ... don't you know? ;) G.L. will post notes to her web site StagePage.Info ... IF the reviews are great. Else ...
