This episode is nothing short of fascinating where sisters Subha and Priya join us for an in depth conversation about family roots, unique childhood experiences, and the culinary traditions that have shaped their identities. They share their stories of growing up as first generation American kids with Indian parents who prioritized preserving cultural traditions. They recall their remarkable mother Padmini's (Momma Amma) journey from India to America through an arranged marriage and how their mother's love of cooking and dedication to preserving their Indian heritage fostered a passion for food that continues to this day.  Hear about the infamous family road trips where yogurt rice and pickles became the go-to lunch staples, and no luggage was packed without the trusty family rice cooker! You'll also discover the meticulous, all hands on deck, process behind the family's new cookbook, Tamil Taste, which features their grandmother's cherished recipes and an account of their parents ambitious mission to have them preserved. Learn how Momma Amma navigated the tumultuous teenage years with her American daughters who were trying to find their place between both cultures. From an unforgettable taco heist in the family van to navigating the perils of being “hairy Indian girls” in America—this episode is packed with hilarious tales and heartfelt moments. Subha and Priya lovingly blend humor and warmth to explore the importance of food, family, and the traditions that continue to flavor their lives. This episode is a savory celebration of sisterhood, resilience, and the love that's simmered on the stove for generations! Welcome to Episode 11 of "In Solidarity" with Dr. Padmini Ray Murray. Dr. Padmini comes from a background in design and technology, with a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. She is the founder of Design Beku, a feminist collective dedicated to making approaches to design and technology more locally rooted, contextual and ethical. In this episode, we delve into the barriers to digital inclusion, especially for the marginalized sections like women and people with disabilities. We explore how access and ownership—or the lack thereof—pose significant challenges, not just in terms of owning a smartphone but also in how technology itself is designed. As we navigate a world where even social protection programs like Aadhar are digitally delivered, the urgency of making technology more inclusive through diverse design solutions cannot be overstated. Join us as we unpack these critical issues and discuss ways to create more inclusive tech solutions with Dr. Padmini.

BIO: Padmini Janaki is the CEO and Co-founder of Mind&Mom, an AI app that predicts pregnancy abnormalities and cures. STORY: Padmini chased success with everything she had because she believed that's what she was born and raised to do. It wasn't until she forgot to feed her daughter that she realized she'd been chasing the wrong thing. LEARNING: Nothing or nobody is as important as you are. So invest a lot in yourself. If we don't have health, we have nothing.   “Invest in yourself because nobody is as important as you.”Padmini Janaki  Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/pjanaki/ (Padmini Janaki) is the CEO and Co-founder of https://mindandmom.com/ (Mind&Mom), an AI app that predicts pregnancy abnormalities and cures. She is also the author of https://www.amazon.com/Myths-Millennials-Book-about-Women-ebook/dp/B08PG3K38S (Myths & Millennials), with 35,000 readers worldwide. Her mission is to save women's health globally and stop maternal deaths. Worst investment everPadmini believed that people are born and raised to be prosperous and financially stable. So she was in that manual mode while growing up. Padmini studied hard, and when she came out of university and started working, she emersed herself in work. All Padmini thought about was working hard to go up the corporate ladder and earn more. Padmini's focus was only on how to be successful. Her version of success was making money, being the best employee, and getting promotions every year. Padmini worked non-stop. She even cut short her maternity leave to get back to her career journey. She felt this was what it took to get to the right level of success. One day she forgot to feed her daughter. She had late-night calls with clients and was so engrossed in the meetings that her daughter fell asleep without eating. It wasn't until the following day, when Padmini's daughter told her that she'd forgotten to feed her, that she realized she had been investing all her energy and focus into her career while missing out on the most important things in her life. Lessons learnedNothing or nobody is as important as you are. So invest a lot in yourself. Doing something that you're passionate about instead of working hard to impress your boss or the people around you is the only way to succeed in life. You can be on your own, make the same money, bring the same value, be happy about it, and have a much more balanced life. Andrew's takeawaysIf we don't have health, we have nothing. You have to take responsibility for your health. You don't have to destroy yourself and your health in a business; you can set your limits. Actionable adviceLearn at least one thing every single day. Set aside an hour every day to focus on learning something new by reading a book or watching a YouTube video that talks about something new. No. 1 goal for the next 12 monthsPadmini's goal for the next 12 months is to go into infertility and hopefully serve 500,000 women so they can have better health. Can Indian companies start providing period leave for women, following Zomato and others’ lead? Radhika Radhakrishnan talks to Padmini Ray Murray about this important aspect of making workplaces better for women.  Menstruation, menopause, mental health, all remain taboo or distorted topics of conversation in much of India. Radhika and Padmini explore the arguments for, and against period leave, and make a case for why they are an important step in the right direction.  Radhika Radhakrishnan is a feminist researcher, doing qualititative research on the intersections of gender, sexuality, technology, and politics. She is currently a researcher at the Internet Democracy Project. She writes for various national media publications and journals, and hosts talks and podcasts on feminist issues. She tweets at @so_radhikal. Dr Padmini Ray Murray is the founder of Design Beku, a feminist collective that endeavours to place an ethics of care at the heart of digital and design practice. Her recent publications explore the implications of the digital for the feminist archive and protest in India, focusing on how corporate online spaces, commit and perpetuate epistemological violence against the marginalised. She tweets at @praymurray and is on Instagram at @padminirm. BIC Talks is brought to you by the Bangalore International Centre. Journey into Passion economy Passion economy is not hating your stupid boss and then becoming one. Many people think that, okay, I don’t like my boss. Let me just do a passion economy. Let me just jump into entrepreneurship. It is not that case. You are going to work with someone even tougher. You will be the boss. You are not becoming a businessman. You are a businessman. So it’s different if your reason for quitting a nine to six job and then starting a passion economy is just because your boss or your work is getting a little boring, tired of all the office politics, maybe not the best, option according to me. Maybe you can pick something else and think about what comes naturally. Well, so in that case, Am I asking you to quit your nine to six job and then jump into passion economy. Maybe not some for someone who is from India for whom the whole template is all generalized.

Our guest, Padmini Gupta, is an Oxford graduate, World Economic Forum Fellow and a social entrepreneur tackling a USD 5 billion industry in the Middle East. She combines her passion for solving social issues with building an enterprise that is sustainable and profitable. RISE, her fintech company, is her first foray as a social entrepreneur, and she hopes to change the lives of the 750,000 maids and nannies currently working in the UAE so they can upskill and plan for a better future for themselves. Padmini shares her story of why she thinks the world needs more social entrepreneurs and how to raise the next generation more aware of the social circumstances around them. "It was many years ago I met Elie Wiesel, the illustrious writer, and Nobel Laureate. I told him how he inspired me and how I wished to live his values. But today's a day that made me realize I already am. He once wrote “No human race is superior; no religious faith is inferior. All collective judgments are wrong. Only racists make them.” Today was a day of many highs, of moms and dads sharing stories about how they had encouraged and helped their nannies move to their dream careers, and Nannies that were encouraged by my message and wished they had the courage to share it with their employers (some of whom called me in an angry fit and said my message had offended them.) I work to empower the women who empower other women and men, to break down these barriers that we hold so dear. I work to keep racism, sexism, poverty away. I work for nannies, for maids, for drivers, for cooks, and I work for mothers who want to see their helpers grow. I work to break down these collective views of the angry women and to amplify the voices of the invisible, and those who support them. I work because I value humanity more than political correctness". - Padmini Gupta   Connect with the guests: Website: https://www.gorise.co Email: padmini@gorise.co Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GrowWithRise/ If you like what you hear, please tell your friends about us and do subscribe to our Podcast.
