Last week, Michael Smuss died at age ninety-nine. Born in 1926, he was the last surviving fighter of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. His passing marks the end of an era, and brings to a close a chapter of living memory. Now the responsibility to tell this story passes fully to us. In the spring of 1943, against impossible odds and with almost no weapons, a small group of young Jews in Nazi-occupied Warsaw staged a revolt that would reverberate through history. This was not just a military engagement, but a story of Jewish resistance, dignity, and moral choice under unimaginable circumstances. Before the war, Warsaw was home to nearly 400,000 Jews—the largest Jewish community in Europe. This was a vibrant, diverse Jewish population: workers and intellectuals, religious and secular, Yiddish-speakers and Polish-speakers. Jews published daily newspapers, ran theaters, fielded soccer teams. They were 40 percent of Warsaw's population. Then came September 1939. Within weeks, Warsaw fell to the Germans. Over the next year, the Nazis systematically stripped Jews of their rights—blocked bank accounts, forced them to wear special armbands, and conscripted them into slave labor. In November 1940, they sealed 400,000 Jews into a ghetto of just two square miles, then forced in 150,000 more from nearby towns and cities. With official rations of just 184 calories per day and no heating, 100,000 Jews died of starvation and disease. But 80 percent stayed alive through extraordinary resourcefulness—smuggling food, establishing soup kitchens, creating underground factories. This too was resistance. In July 1942, the Germans began mass deportations to Treblinka, where most were murdered upon arrival. Over seven weeks, they sent 300,000 Jews to the gas chambers, with the help of a Jewish police force. By September, only 60,000 remained. At that point, something shifted. Survivors asked why they hadn't fought back. The shame and anger became a catalyst. Between September and April, the ghetto prepared. They built 750 bunkers with electricity, water, and food stocks. When the Germans came on April 19, 1943, expecting to round up the Jews with no resistance, they were met with gunfire, grenades, and mines. The Germans thought it would take three days. It took 27—because the entire community had transformed the ghetto into a network of underground revolt. To tell this story, Mosaic's editor Jonathan Silver is joined by Professor Samuel Kassow of Trinity College. They discuss the courage of the fighters as well as the resistance of those who built the bunkers, who preserved cultural life, who maintained their dignity in ways that have largely been forgotten. They also confront difficult questions about heroism, survival, and how to fulfill the sacred obligations of remembering.
Welcome to Part 3 of Episode 260 of the Mike Drop podcast. In Episode 222 of the CounterVortex podcast, Bill Weinberg marks the 81st anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising by reviewing the new documentary on Jewish armed struggle against the Nazis, Resistance—They Fought Back. A nearly forgotten element of this struggle was the consciously anti-Zionist politics of some of the resistance leaders—most notably Jewish Combat Organization subcommander Marek Edelman, who was the last surviving leader of the Ghetto Uprising when he died in his native Poland in 2009. Edelman was a follower of the General Jewish Labor Bund, which rejected the colonization of Palestine in favor of fighting for a dignified and secure place for Jews within Europe. This history is especially critical at this moment in light of credible accusations that the self-proclaimed Jewish State is committing genocide in Gaza, and propagandistic efforts to cynically conflate anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism. On April 19, 1943 the SS attempted the final liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto, with the goal of deporting the last Jews of the Ghetto to the gas chambers at Treblinka. Most entered their bunkers and the fighters began firing on the SS who had entered the Ghetto in order to commence the deportation. The SS retreated and their commander Jurgen Stroop resorted to burning down the entire ghetto which eventually crushed the uprising and the survivors were deported to Treblinka and Majdanek. This episode will attempt to clarify some of these events and explore some of the questions that hindsight affords the luxury of speculating. Was the armed resistance an exercise in futility? Would perhaps more have survived had they not resisted the attempt to deport the last ones to Treblinka? And, Boston's first and only Yemeni restaurant marks Ramadan. Also, the deadliest mass shooting in Canadian history happened three years ago this week in Nova Scotia. It led to new restrictions on guns, which in turn added fuel to a growing guns rights movement. Plus, a Yiddish "street song" pays homage to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. US bureau chief Jacob Magid and Diaspora affairs reporter Canaan Lidor join host Jessica Steinberg for today's podcast. Lidor offers color and perspectives from March of the Living in Poland, as some 9,000 people made the trek between two former Nazi-run death camps, in Oswiecim, Poland, marking Holocaust Remembrance Day. Magid discusses what US Senator Lindsey Graham told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the possibility of a normalization agreement with Saudi Arabia, following his recent visit in the region. Magid also dives into his analysis of the US visa waiver program, pushed by US Ambassador Tom Nides who wants Israel in the program, but has conditioned it upon allowing Palestinian-Americans to travel freely through Ben Gurion Airport. Steinberg mentions a new album of 13 songs, “Paskol Shlishi” (Third Soundtrack), written by headlining Israeli musicians, the latest endeavor that aims to connect the third and fourth generations to the tragedies and lessons of the Holocaust. Discussed articles include: At Auschwitz March of the Living, displays of Jewish unity in a sea of Israeli flags Halina Birenbaum survived the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. She saw heroism elsewhere GOP senator: Window for Israel-Saudi normalization deal could close within a year Senior Hamas delegation seen in Saudi Arabia ahead of expected rapprochement talks Despite baggage, some Palestinians rooting for Israel to secure US visa waiver Mainstream Israeli artists make an album of new music to connect youth to Holocaust Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. As we prepare for Holocaust Remembrance Day, Maine Municipal Association, Maine Chiefs of Police Association, and several other stakeholders had the opportunity to receive an important history lesson in context from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C.. In this episode, Rebecca Graham sits down with Noel March who facilitated bringing a special law enforcement program out of D.C. to Maine through the Maine Community Policing Institute and the Maine Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine. The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum was able to take part of The Museum's Law, Justice, and the Holocaust Program on the road to Maine, one of only two places outside Washington D.C. who have benefitted from the learning opportunity. The signature program, Law Enforcement and Society: Lessons of the Holocaust (LEAS), is presented in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League. Established in 1999 at the request of DC Metropolitan Police Department, the program is suitable for recruit, in-service, and command professionals in law enforcement at the federal, state, and local levels. To date, this innovative program has reached more than 150,000 officers from the US and 80 countries worldwide. The internationally recognized date for Holocaust Remembrance Day corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar. It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. In 2023, that day is Tuesday, April 18.
Today I'm joined by Max Kaiser, author of the new book Jewish Anti-fascism and the False Promise of Settler Colonialism to discuss a forgotten history of Jews in Australia. We discuss the complexities of Holocaust memorialisation, the importance of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising to Jewish anti-fascists, the position of Jewish migrants in Australian society and much more! From 1897 to 1921, the General Jewish Labour Bund operated as a Jewish socialist party in Russia, Lithuania, and Poland. Composed primarily of Yiddish-speaking, secular Jews, the Bund struggled on two fronts: for the construction of socialism to liberate the working class, and for national cultural autonomy to protect the rights of Eastern European Jews to their own institutions. The history of the Bund is filled with twists and turns, and complicated entanglements with the Russian Social Democratic Party, the Bolsheviks, and the Soviet Union. Although it was dissolved in 1921, the legacy of the Bund stretched far into the 20th century. In Poland, former Bundists organized resistance against antisemitism and played a key role in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising after the invasion of the Nazis. In the United States, Bundists created new socialist organizations and played pivotal roles in labor struggles, utopian movements, and more. Artist and writer Molly Crabapple joins Art for the End Times to discuss her upcoming book on the Bund, her personal history with Yiddish, and what struggles today can learn from the historical example of the Bundists.Post-Production: Dwayne GladdenHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews
