A new(ish) era of Serious Fun kicks off with UWGB English professor Zack Kruse! Bryan and Zack talk about the work of the enigmatic and often misunderstood Steve Ditko, creator of characters like Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and The Question, as well as Zack's must-read book "Mysterious Travelers: Steve Ditko and the Search for a New Liberal Identity". We'll discuss the complex ideological and philosophical framework that shaped Ditko's creative output, how it manifests in his most popular characters, and more! Special thanks to Marcus Moss for the intro and outro voiceovers, and Kevin McLeod for the outro music. Not a hoax, not a dream...in this episode, a character dies! And...gets better. Merry Christmas! My present to you: this episode. It's, uh, not holiday themed, really, except maybe in a It's A Wonderful Life kinda way as there's a story about retrospection and redemption. The comics: Amazing Spider-Man 4 (1963), Amazing Spider-Man 217 & 218 (1981), and Marvel Two-In-One 86 (1981). Episode art by Steve Ditko, from Spider-Man 4. Further reading & references: All of the Marvels by Douglas Wolk (talks about how early Spider-Man villains are corrupt father figures to Peter) Mysterious Travelers: Steve Ditko and the Search for a New Liberal Identity by Zack Kruse (yes, yes, I'm aware that Ditko was an Ayn Rand fan (ugh), but I don't go into it because this book muddles the popular conception of how this influenced his work) Patreon: patreon.com/notadreampod Mastodon: @bookybookman@retro.pizza Twitter: @notadreampod Instagram: @notahoaxpod Email: notahoaxpod@gmail.com Music: Big Boi Pants by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com - used with Creative Commons license Sound clips: All-Star Superman (2011), Justice League Unlimited (2004 - 2006), Batman Beyond (1999 - 2001), X-Men: The Animated Series (1992 - 1997), The Dark Knight (2008), Spider-Man (2002), Superman (1978), The Transformers: The Movie (1986), Justice League (2001 - 2004), Doom Patrol (2019 - ), WandaVision (2021), X-Men: Pryde of the X-Men (1989), Spider-Man (1981 - 1982), and Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends (1981 - 1983). In this episode of Around Comics, Sal and Chris are joined by special guest Zack Kruse to discuss Alan Moore's Swamp Thing #34. This issue is widely regarded as a masterpiece of horror comics and a turning point for the Swamp Thing series, as Moore took over writing duties and injected a new level of depth and sophistication into the character's mythology. The panel delves into the themes of mortality, transformation, and ecological consciousness that run through the issue, as well as the influence of classic horror literature and the work of Ditko and other comics pioneers on Moore's writing. Tune in for a fascinating conversation about one of the greatest comics of all time, with insights from a true comics scholar and historian.Literary Guise Podcast: A Book Club for Modern MenA cocktail-infused book podcast, examining positive and toxic portrayals of masculinity.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showFollow Us. In our final live Serious Fun from the 2022 Brown County Library Comic-Con, Bryan sits down with Zack Kruse (UW - Green Bay Sheboygan) and Miriam Brabham (UW - Green Bay Main Campus) to once and for all answer that question that gnaws at us literally and figuratively - who is the all time greatest, gnarliest, creepiest, most symbolically relevant monster of them all? Is it Dracula, lord of the vampires? The Wolfman, half-man half-beast? Frankenstein's monster, misunderstood brute? Or is it the humble zombie horde, shambling across the countryside? Delve deep into these monsters and what they represent with us - you might get scared, but you'll learn something! GORDIE finally welcomes ZACK KRUSE to The Gordcast. 15 years seperate our heroes, but that makes no difference in a lively and educational conversation. ZACK hosts a radio show, snags his mom's copy of IT, peeks at ROBO-COP through a hallway, becomes a leading authority on STEVE DITKO and wasn't that scared of monsters. GORDIE was scared of KING KONG when it was shown at a church, borrowed a projector from the library, went to an Olive Garden once and imagines Nudy suits while listening to THE MUTANT GRAVEYARD. LOTS of monster kid conversation and nerdy music/music talk and a very healthy dose of MST 3K.
Welcome back to the podcast where we talk about Excalibur and nothing but Excalibur… except when we talk about Spider-Man! Which we're doing this week! Comics scholar and Steve Ditko expert Dr. Zack Kruse joins Anna, Mav, and Andrew to discuss Spidey and the unique vision of his complicated co-creator along with some Excalibur #53, “The Litter,” in which Brian tells Meggan a story from his misspent youth, part of which he spent rooming with some uptight nobody named Peter Parker, who's always spouting snooze-worthy speeches about power and responsibility. Topics include what makes Spidey the heart of the Marvel universe, differences between Ditko's Objectivism and the contemporary variety, and what you might have expected if you'd been brave enough to knock on Ditko's door. (Zack did, and lived to tell the tale on this very podcast!)
Anders pratar om Les Aventures de Blake et Mortimer: Le Secret de L'Espadon Integrale ochThe Adventures of Blake and Mortimer: The Secret of the Great Pyramid av Edgar P Jacobs och fortsätter sin Ditko-läsning med Mysterios Travelers av Zack Kruse. Zack Kruse has been organizing the well regarded Appleseed convention in Fort Wayne, IN, as well as putting out his own stories and doing academic work in comic history for some time. He has a chat with Wendi about nurturing young creators at conventions, fairy hoaxes, if Dana Scully was a pragmatist or a dogmatist, and a lengthy discussion of his research on the reclusive Steve Ditko- who really created Spider-Man, similiarities between Peter Parker and Blue Beetle, his use of objectivism and the introspective nature of his work. It's an interesting discourse for anyone fascinated by the backstory of Marvel Comics and Stan Lee.
Live from Appleseed Con in Ft. Wayne, IN its a very special panel with indie comic legend, Jaime Hernandez! He discusses 30 years of creating "Love and Rockets" with his brothers, his artistic style of drawing naturalistically and letting the characters age with the audience, 80s SoCal punk rock and the evolving nature of independent comics.
