Rochester Regional Health is using a measured and practical approach to data interoperability. They have purposefully chosen NOT to turn on the firehose of interoperable data. Instead, they have focused their efforts on data that clinicians want to use, that fits their workflow, and can be seamlessly incorporated into their Epic system. They started with lab data and this integration, on its own, is having a positive impact on patient care. Healthcare IT Today sat down with Erik Jacob, Director of Interoperability at Rochester Regional Health (RRH) and Charlie Harp, CEO at Clinical Architecture to discuss how a practical, measured approach to interoperability is preferable to a tsunami of data. New York State has enacted a new law that is designed to protect workers against airborne diseases in the workplace. Governor Andrew Cuomo says it's about learning from the current pandemic and making sure workers are safe going forward. In a statement, the governor said, "When the COVID-19 pandemic began, it quickly became clear that New York's employers weren't taking adequate steps to protect their workers from airborne infectious disease." The new law requires employers to create a plan -- and potentially some major changes -- by early June. Will it work to prevent, for example, workers from infecting each other with a common cold? What about the flu? We discuss it and we examine what we've learned about how COVID spread. Our guests: Dr. Emil Lesho , Rochester Regional Health healthcare epidemiologist, infectious diseases specialist, and professor of medicine Elizabeth Cordello , chair of the labor and employment practice group at Pullano & Farrow

Dr. Damanpaul Sondhi, a pulmonologist at Rochester Regional Health, said there are enough beds, thanks to the opening of additional floors at the new Sands Constellation Center for Critical Care. Dr. Steven Schulz says getting a flu shot is even more important this year, than it has been in the past. He's the Pediatric Medical Director for Rochester Regional Health's Monroe County practices, as well as Finger Lakes Medical Associates, which has offices in Geneva and Penn Yan. A recent poll by CS Mott Children's Hospital in Michigan found that one-out-of-three parents do not plan to vaccinate their children for the regular flu. He says there are two main reasons for this, one of which is purely precautionary - as parents and people in general - try to avoid doctors offices. However, the flu shot is crucial in an ordinary year in preventing or lessening the intensity of millions of cases every season. Today on The Debrief Dr. Steven Schulz on the importance of the flu shot, and the safeguards in place at local medical offices in the region.

The artist's renderings of the future Skyview Park apartments show a modern, four-story building linked by a glass-enclosed bridge to a smaller structure of the same design. The $45 million, 157-unit senior apartment complex is under construction at the former Medley Centre in Irondequoit. The project, a partnership between the nonprofit PathStone and Rochester Regional Health, is part of the town's ongoing efforts to transform the abandoned retail center into a multipurpose development. "This albatross is no longer a sign of blight and adversity," said Irondequoit Supervisor Dave Seeley of the former mall, "but one of optimism and hope." Seventy-three of the apartments will be built in what used to be a sprawling Sears store. The apartments will be rented to residents who are 55 and older and earn no more than 60 percent of the area median income. "A majority of our seniors fall into that threshold," Seeley said. Half of the units will be reserved for frail, elderly seniors. Rochester

The University of Rochester Medical Center and Rochester Regional Health are among the institutions partnering with the drug company Pfizer and the immunotherapy company BioNTech to test a group of COVID-19 vaccine candidates. Rochester is one of four sites in the United States conducting early-stage clinical trials of the vaccine, according to a news release from URMC. Other American sites include the New York University Grossman School of Medicine and the University of Maryland School of Medicine, which have already started administering doses to participants, as well as Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Like URMC and Rochester Regional, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital will begin enrolling participants soon.
