Secretary of State Marco Rubio released a plan to reorganize the State Department that would eliminate human-rights-focused bureaus and reduce U.S. staff. Jessica Stern, former U.S. special envoy for the human rights of LGBTQ+ persons, joins us. Then, concern is growing that extremism and white supremacism in the military may now be going unchecked. The Trump administration did away with a program to track and combat the issue. Heidi Beirich, co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, tells us more. And, author Chris Whipple talks about the role that President Trump's chief of staff Susie Wiles has played in Trump's action-packed second-term honeymoon period.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Advancing the human rights of LGBTQ people around the world was part of the Biden administration's policy agenda. The point person for that effort was Jessica Stern, a US special envoy. She left the job with the changing of the guard at the White House, and President Donald Trump is not expected to fill the position. On Thursday, in her first interview since stepping down, Stern reflects on her time advancing LGBTQ rights on the global stage. Also, it's been the warmest winter that anyone can remember in Russia. That might sound nice, but for many Russian communities, melting ice and thawing temperatures have caused real problems. And, Japan experiences more earthquakes than any country. It's tempting to share only the highlight reel of our lives, but when we're open about the difficult moments as well, we make it easier to tap into our emotions and create space for other people to process theirs, too. In this panel session, Wondermind co-founders Selena Gomez and Mandy Teefey will explore the importance of bringing mental health conversations into the light alongside Solomon Thomas and Dr. Corey Yeager - not just for decreasing stigma and building awareness, but as a way to deal in hard times. Moderated by Dr. Jessica Stern, the conversation will cover the importance of flexibility over strict routines in mental healthcare, dealing with negative self-talk, and getting real about when you're not feeling OK.
The Supreme Court determined that states cannot remove Donald Trump from their presidential ballots. The political left predictably lost its mind. One of the best examples was Keith Olbermann's over-the-top, public temper tantrum. New York City is reimplementing some tough-on-crime policies, even using national guardsmen and state police. But is this for public safety or to institute the next stage of a police state? Jessica Stern has been empowered by the Biden administration to travel the globe on the taxpayer's dime to party with like-minded people and push transgenderism and gender ideology. In 1693, King William III and Queen Mary II of England granted a royal charter for two institutions of higher education in the Colony of Virginia. The first institution was the College of William & Mary. The second institution was the Indian School at William & Mary, known from 1723 to the present as the Brafferton Indian School. The history of the Brafferton Indian School is a story of power, trade, land, and culture. It's an Indigenous story. It's also a story of English, later British, colonialism. Over the next two episodes, we will investigate the Brafferton Indian School and the stories it tells about power, trade, land, culture, and colonialism in early America. We'll also explore the legacy of the Brafferton and other colonial Indian schools by examining the connections between these schools and the creation of the Indian Boarding Schools that operated within the United States between the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. In this episode, we focus on the history and origins of the Brafferton Indian School. Dr. Stern is a licensed clinical psychologist, consultant, and clinical assistant professor at NYU Langone Health. Her areas of specialty are depression, anxiety, ADHD in adults, and trauma, as well as burnout, productivity, and corporate wellness. In our conversation today we discuss the intersection of ADHD and trauma, the need for routine and structure while still maintaining our need for spontaneity. We also get into the importance of support networks and how we can also check in with ourselves.Additionally, we also talked about Wondermind, a mental fitness company that Dr. Stern is serving as an advisor. Wondermind was co-founded by Selena Gomez and Mandy Teefey and just launched their own podcast Baggage Drop which features short 10-minute episodes to help with mental health and build habits.Be sure to check out my interview with Skye Rapson on her podcast The ADHD Skills LabSupport me on PatreonFeel free to ask me a question on my Contact PageFind the full show note at HackingYourADHD.com/147This Episode's Top TipsFresh starts can help us let go of our past performance and embrace our new self.We can effectively create motivation with financial incentives, but often that isn't enough for us to follow through on some of the things that we really do want to do. We also need to create reminders and a plan on how we want to accomplish our goals.Don't try and do all the new things at once - pace yourself and create a plan on what you want to do first. Try and focus on doing the things that by doing them will make everything else easier. We need to be flexible with our plans because we are going to hit speed bumps - while we can't plan for everything we can work on ways to help us get back up when we get knocked down.

In this episode, Dr. Nina and Dr. Jessica explore the history of over-apologizing, and how this behavior keeps us stuck, and they validate the rationale behind why we might find ourselves in this pattern. They begin the episode by sharing about their friendship, and how to sustain relationships long-term, professionally, and personally. They continue by affirming reasons one might apologize in order to take healthy responsibility when necessary. Subsequently, the majority of the episode covers scenarios where it might be less helpful to apologize, and instead, they encourage standing in your self-worth and inner guiding light. If you've found yourself apologizing and later thought…”, What am I sorry for, actually?”, or apologized for merely existing, this episode is for you. In this episode host Rafael Behr talks to Dr Karen Stenner, the political psychologist & behavioral economist best known for long ago predicting the rise of Trump-like figures uner the kinds of conditions we now confront. Her research on authoritarianism and 'Far Right' politics uses psychological theories and methods (in particular, Randomized Controlled Trials) to explain human behavior. She also use those same theories and methods (particularly RCTs) to shift human behavior via communications and campaigns (of every kind), including designing and embedding messages that de-activate authoritarianism and diminish expressions of intolerance and racism in a society. While the last few decades have shown major progress when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights globally, queer people have had to continue to fight for them. During Pride month there have been several high-profile instances of violence targeted at queer people. These events are stark reminders that the struggle for equal rights and safety for LGBTQ+ people continues. NPR's Ari Shapiro spoke with three high-level diplomats assigned to LGBTQ+ issues – the U.S.'s Jessica Stern, Italy's Fabrizio Petri and Argentina's Alba Rueda – about whether life is improving for queer people globally. In participating regions, you'll also hear a local news segment to help you make sense of what's going on in your community.Email us at considerthis@npr.org.

From the Lawfare Archive, February 19, 2020: Jessica Stern, who served on the National Security Council during the Clinton administration, has a remarkable skill: she interviews really bad people, and she writes about them in really interesting ways. She spent quite a bit of time interviewing Bosnian-Serb war criminal Radovan Karadzic, who is serving a life sentence at the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal in The Hague for genocide in connection with the Bosnian conflict in the 1990s. Their conversations led to the publication of the book, "My War Criminal: Personal Encounters with an Architect of Genocide," which triggered a remarkable outpouring of rage at Jessica Stern. Benjamin Wittes spoke with Jessica recently about the book, the controversy, and her general approach to talking to evil men. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Boston University Professor Jessica Stern joins this episode of Vital Interests Podcast to discuss how a perceived loss of status is helping to radicalize young people, and how understanding these feelings could be key to stopping them from becoming terrorists.
In our second episode, we talk to Dr. Jessica Stern, a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. She has spent many hours sitting with people, helping them sort through what is true in their life, and guiding them as they name what they want to be true. We asked Dr. Stern to help us discuss passion and the longing for meaningful work. In this conversation, we cover passion projects, the drive to make a difference in the world, what drives people on a journey to create - like this podcast - and why people often fail in their endeavors. It's a privilege to have the opportunity to pursue projects of passion. Dr. Stern helps us unpack the components of modern privilege, both in time and resources. These things put us in a position to create and build - whether it's a new business, a non-profit, or a podcast. What is this “itch” many of us get -- the itch to venture out into new projects, often propelled by the question “am I doing enough?” This is a great conversation. We hope you enjoy it! And make sure to throw us some stars! Question Of The DayWhat is the greater good you focus on that helps you rise above the scarcity mindset? About Jessica Stern-Enzi: I have loved being in the kitchen for as long as I can remember. I come from a family of cooks and bakers and as an adult, I’d spend hours thinking of recipes I wanted to try or create, perusing cookbooks like they were novels and creating menus for friends and family. I have also been a follower of a whole foods, low sugar, mostly plant based, organic diet for most of my adult life. I was the one always nagging my family to watch their sugar intake and eat healthy, real foods. That’s what made it so ironic to find out (completely unexpectedly) that I had type 1.5 diabetes, otherwise known as LADA, at the age of 43. I take care of myself better than most people I know and diabetes was the last thing on my radar. I now joke with my husband and say that a higher power must have grown sick of me worrying about what I ate so they made it simple and took away sugar and carbs. How in the world would I ever eat and bake dessert again? This was one of the first thoughts I had. I played around with alternate flours before, never all that successfully, but now it was a necessity. So I dove head first into the kitchen and into low carb, no sugar baking and quickly discovered that I could still get my fix, I just had to learn how ingredients work and adapt! I learned about the ketogenic diet and how dessert could still be a part of it. I was aware of gluten free and vegan bakeries in Cincinnati, but none that specialize in low carb. I knew there was a hole that I needed to fill. So, Beyond Grain Bakery was born. My hope is that those, like me, who love dessert but have restrictions, can still find satisfaction, and even those who don’t have medically necessary dietary restrictions, but rather choose to follow certain lifestyles, can enjoy these healthier options. Everyone deserves a quality baked good! www.BeyondGrainBakery.com Instagram: @beyondgrainbakery www.Facebook.com/beyondgrainbakery Thank you so much for listening! xo Jessica Tye www.JessicaTye.com

Dr. Ferguson interviews returning guest Dr. Jessica Stern as they discuss diagnosing and managing chronic pain. We live in an age of information. The internet provides us with 24/7 access to all types of information—news, how-to articles, sports scores, entertainment news, and congressional votes. But what do we do with all of this knowledge? How do we sift through and interpret it all? We are not the first people to ponder these questions. Today, Alejandra Dubcovsky, an Associate Professor at University of California Riverside and author of Informed Power: Communication in the Early South, takes us through the early American south and how the Native Americans, Europeans, and enslaved Africans who lived there acquired, used, and traded information. Early North America was a place rife with violent conflict. Between the 17th and 19th centuries we see a lot of conflict between different Native American peoples, Native American peoples and colonists, colonists from one empire versus colonists from another empire, settlers from one state quarreling with settlers from another state, and in the 19th century, we also see strife between Americans, Canadians, and Mexicans. Today, we’re going to explore some of the causes of the violent conflict that took place in early America by looking specifically at Native America and the ways Native Americans used guns to shape their lives and the course of North American colonial and indigenous history. Our guide for this exploration is David J. In this episode, we leave our boring jobs and become Jason Borne Bureaucrats, because we watch the 1997 action-thriller, The Peacemaker. How easy is it to steal a Russian nuclear warhead? This is the podcast in which War on the Rocks fixes the Middle East...ok, we kid, but it is a fascinating conversation with some of the most astute and informed U.S. experts on Iraq and the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Have a listen! We were joined by: J.M. Berger, author of the new book, ISIS: State of Terror (along with Jessica Stern) and a nonresident fellow in the Project on U.S. Relations with the Islamic World at the Brookings Institution. William McCants, author of the forthcoming book, ISIS Apocalypse, a fellow in the Center for Middle East Policy and director of the Project on U.S. Relations with the Islamic World at the Brookings Institution. Denise Natali, a senior research fellow at the Institute for National Strategic Studies at the National Defense University (her views do not necessarily represent those of the U.S. government). Douglas Ollivant, a senior national security fellow with the New America Foundation and a managing partner and the Senior Vice President of Mantid International. Ryan Evans, editor-in-chief of War on the Rocks, moderated with Lagavulin 16 neat in hand.
Jessica Stern was a mid level National Security Council staffer when Hollywood literally came calling. Nicole Kidman portrayed a fictionalized version of her work as a nuclear security analyst in the Clinton White House in the film "The Peacemaker" (also starring George Clooney). Stern's academic and professional life have taken some interesting turns. In the 2000s she published groundbreaking research on what motivates individuals to commit violent acts of terror, and she did so by speaking to actual terrorists. Stern recently published a new book called ISIS: State of Terror that takes a deep dive into the historic origins of the so-called Islamic State. This is a great episode with fun and fascinating stories from a long time national security wonk. Enjoy.
