With its advanced research and development capabilities, Mobix Labs is well-positioned to provide leadership in this important technological area.Where can the technology be used?Currently, the company is focused on the infrastructure market. That means that the chips are intended to be used in the technology that makes it possible for you to get 5G signals. This includes the cellular towers installed by the carriers, repeaters installed by carriers, and small repeaters installed by businesses and individuals. This focus means that you could be interacting with the company's technology every day without even knowing it. This is because these chips and radios are responsible for the high-end 5G signal strength available on your phone. Their chips could be at the tops of tall cellular towers, but it could also be built into smaller form devices, like the cellular repeaters that many cities are having installed on the tops of telephone poles around town to enhance cellular reception. The need for this much infrastructure is because of the nature of the frequencies used for mmWave 5G. The higher frequency used makes it possible for incredibly fast internet speeds, but is more susceptible to interference from everyday items, like walls. Our tests show about 8x speed in our offices over standard 5G on the same device. But these increased speeds are limited to Mission Control and are not available in the studio - likely because of the thicker walls, additional lights, and equipment. However, this focus on infrastructure does not negate the technology's other uses. In fact, the company has been in discussions about other implementations, including vehicles. Cars and trucks are more regularly using 5G technology for communication, both to the internet, as well as direct communication between one another. This allows for software updates to the vehicle's systems, as well as the ability for it to know about what other cars and trucks around it are intending to do.To learn more about Mobix Labs and their 5G mmWave technology, visit the company's website.Interview by Scott Ertz of F5 Live: Refreshing Technology.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. 5G utilizes variety of frequency bands one of which is millimeter-wave or “mmWave.” mmWave generally refers to 24-100 GHz; a frequency range that can carry an incredible amount of data and, when coupled with advancements in coding techniques, can carry thousands of times more data than a low band signal. That is one of the reasons mmWave is seen as a key technology and vital component to 5G network performance. Because of its ability to handle large swaths of data, mobile network operators can benefit from leveraging mmWave wherever a very high throughput is needed, whether indoors or outdoors. Indoor sites would get the benefits of multi-gigabit speeds and very low latencies, especially useful in larger spaces like airports, train stations and event venues. Outdoor sites benefit from quick deployment and the capacity increase provided to existing networks, especially in urban areas. Globally, we're seeing mmWave leveraged in Italy, the UK, Finland, Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, China, Japan and the US. In the US, one of the major carriers has placed a heavy emphasis on 5G mmWave and has average download speeds of nearly 700 Mbps, 2-3x as fast as their competitors. In Korea, Samsung used 5G mmWave as backhaul to help get download speeds of 1.8 Gbps on a fast-moving subway train. Samsung also offers various mmWave 5G end-to-end solutions, including the Compact Macro, which combines the baseband, radio, and antenna into a single unit, as well as 5G mmWave small cells for indoor and outdoor environments. The ways we're seeing mmWave utilized to advance technology today is just the start. Learn more about how mmWave will continue to allow mobile operators to provide speeds faster than 4G and support new 5G services.

What is 5G mmWave spectrum?

According to some reports, the government is considering fragmenting the crucial millimetre wave band (mmWave) for 5G services to meet the claims of satellite communication service players. Bharti Airtel's OneWeb and Elon Musk's Starlink are making an entry into India's satellite space. These companies use low-earth orbit satellites to provide high-speed broadband Internet services around the world, with a special focus on remote areas where deploying mobile towers or fiber optic cables are difficult. But the proposal has not gone down well with the telecom operators in India, including Reliance Jio. They believe that such a move would reduce the total spectrum available for telecom services. Let us first understand what the crucial mmWave is. Millimetre wave band or mmWave refers to a specific part of the radio frequency spectrum between 24GHz and 100GHz. While the current available networks work optimally on lower frequencies, 5G makes it possible to allocate high bands above 24GHz for telecom infrastructure. This spectrum has a short wavelength, apt to deliver superior speeds and low latencies. The current proposal seeks to allocate only the spectrum between 24.5 to 28.5 GHZ in the mmWave band to 5G mobile operators. Now, let us find out why mmWave band is so coveted. 5G services can be deployed using lower frequency bands. These bands cover greater distances and are proven to work efficiently even in environments with interference -- common in urban settings. But, data speeds on these bands could not hit the peak potential of 5G. For true 5G experience, mmWave band is essential. Though the high-frequency bands cover smaller areas and are prone to interferences, such bands are capable of carrying much more data with low latency compared to lower frequency bands. The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) earlier this year allowed telecom service providers to test 5G networks on various bands, including mmWave band. However, the allocated spectrum for network trials were limited to around 4GHz in 24.25 GHz to 28.5 GHz frequency. Telecom service providers are demanding at least 1 GHz of mmWave spectrum per operator to begin with, and an additional 1 GHz as the network matures to build an efficient 5G network ecosystem. With four players in the market and limited 4GHz spectrum available, even a small portion of spectrum allocated outside the telecom sector would create fragmentation and reduce the total spectrum available for telecom services. The allocation of mmWave band will also be critical to the satellite communication sector. According to the Delhi-based Satellite Industry Association, SATCOM players have made substantial levels of investment and any regulatory uncertainty with regard to the full 27.5-29.5 GHz spectrum band would put the entire satellite communication sector at risk.
