It's getting more popular than ever for service-based entrepreneurs to leave their businesses behind in favor of selling online courses. But the question is: which one is more sustainable? Abagail Pumphrey has unique insight into this question. As a former service provider turned online educator, she sees the best (and worst) of both worlds. In this episode of The Business of You, Abagail will share the wild and wonderful ride behind launching her brands and help us make more informed decisions about pricing, marketing, and booking clients. Abagail is the Founder of Boss Project and a Co-host of the chart-topping podcast, The Strategy Hour. She is internet-famous for the program she created with her Co-founder Emylee, Trello for Business, which breaks down tedious and complicated systems into bite-size chunks for entrepreneurs. To date, Abagail has helped over 15,000 creative small business owners create simplicity and ease in reaching their goals. Abagail allows other service-based business owners to reignite their offer, develop systems for client experience, and get more of their time back inside their program, The Incubator. The team at Boss Project is truly revitalizing the service-based industry through strategies that don't require flashy marketing, a huge audience, or full-time hours. Life and business comes full circle As a child, Abagail was encouraged to work towards a career in STEM. Instead, she whimsically told her mother that she'd like to design cereal boxes someday. From the beginning, Abagail had a creative eye and a passion for design. While her parents instilled practical knowledge and strategic thinking, she also longed for a business beyond working 9-5. She pursued work in marketing. After a long road building her resume, a surprise layoff forced her to get serious. She accepted the challenge. Determined, Abagail launched her business and spent every waking moment in launch mode. She replaced her corporate income in a matter of months. She was popular on social media and carved out a niche in the food space – finally venturing into the packaging design field! Making the switch from services to sales Abagail was thriving in her career. But despite her passion and hard work, she had yet to realize she was neglecting a key opportunity. Her Co-founder pointed to their marketing plan and suggested that many of their followers were not their clients and would never book them for their services. They were other business owners…and were missing out on significant opportunities to sell them what they needed the most! They decided to make the switch to educational programs to help entrepreneurs thrive. Should you pivot to programs? The switch from services to courses took a lot longer than their initial business launch. Creating infrastructure to sell online courses was a lot of work, but it paid off when it began to pay their salaries. Abagail says yes when asked if it was worth it – but only because she enjoys both businesses! She shares the pros and cons, emphasizing that while selling courses seems like passive income, most service providers make more money with less effort. This educational episode will help you decide what's right for you on your entrepreneurial journey. When it comes to business, one size does not fit all – especially when it comes to strategy, systems, and scaling! Quotes “On a whim, I told my mom that I wanted to design cereal boxes. She was like, what are you talking about! But someone has to design the boxes that things go in.” “I jumped headfirst into building my business. It was a time of my life in which I had the most time and needed the least amount of money to maintain the lifestyle I had. In 30 days, I had replaced my corporate salary.” “It is a hard switch. Especially when you're not marketing to the same group of people. Making the switch into education meant I was unsure when I was going to have that income again.” “We switched gears. We put all our time and energy into the education part of the business. We stopped taking client work. It meant slowness and took time to pick up momentum…we were launching all the time!” “We were doing live workshops every two weeks, presenting on webinars, speaking at summits and conferences. We eventually started our own podcast. It was a lot of getting in front of people to start to make a reasonable living. It took us a long time to get to where the education part paid us the same as what the service side did.” “Our initial course was called Pricing for Profit, designed to help photographers with in-person selling and how to utilize those strategies to create an actual career and money. We took that program and extrapolated that out to be for all services, using the psychology of selling.” “We have worked with over 15,000 businesses all over the globe over the last eight years.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit the Boss Project website at https://bossproject.com/ Check out the Boss Project ultimate template shop on their website at https://creativetemplateshop.com/ Follow Abagail Pumphrey on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/abagailsays/ Connect directly with Abagail on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/abbiep/

The team at Boss Project is truly revitalizing the service based industry through strategies that don't require flashy marketing, a huge audience or full-time hours. Here's what we covered on the episode: The Start of Boss Project + Offers Abagail shares that their brand was originally Think Creative Collective and rebranded to Boss Project about 5 years ago You can join their Boss Project Facebook Community that has over 30k entrepreneurs - it's a great spot to find jobs and get support The Boss Project started in 2015 when Abagail was recently laid off and started her own branding and marketing company - she was able to replace her salary in the first 30 days Shortly after starting her business, Abagail met Emylee, her business partner, who at the time was running her own photography business How Abagail and Emylee's partnership started as them working on projects together - soon they began marketing themselves as a package and started the Think Creative Collective On top of running the agency, Abagail and Emylee were teaching everything they were learning, from how to get clients to sales strategy and more, on their blog When it was just the two of them, they leaned more into the education side of their business, but now that they have a team, they can offer a wide variety of services Abagail believes the reason they grew was because of the community they offered and says it wouldn't have been possible without the community of women interested in learning and growing together One of Abagail's favorite offers is website design because of their unique approach to design, messaging, and strategy to create an SEO-rich website that speaks to prospects for their clients Abagail and Emylee have 7 core full-time employees, but several additional contractors come in for specialized areas One of the first things Abagail and Emylee do with clients is dig into the numbers because the only way to scale is to truly understand where you are at - they like to see what has served you well so you can do more of it and see if you are pricing yourself correctly Abagail shares a client story of a social media strategist who needed to realign her pricing and contracts with clients Instead of sending an email that outlined the new pricing for this social media strategist, Abagail, and Emylee coached her on how to have individual conversations with her clients based on her relationship with each client, and it was extremely successful In 6 weeks, the social media strategist had 6 new contracts and an additional 60k in revenue, and by continuing to ensure her pricing was in alignment, in 3 months, she doubled her business with fewer clients than when she started with So many people put themselves out of business because they are not appropriately getting paid enough for it to be worth all the effort they're putting in The Power of Relationships + Prioritizing Your Life Abagail says that most people assume trends are marketing because it's what's working at the moment for the loudest people in the room, but marketing, in the most basic sense, is sharing what you do with the world What business owners need to be focused on is relationships - marketing is only as good as who you know and how much they know about what you can do for them Abagail focuses so much on relationships because she has seen people be one connection away from being booked out for years to come - when you and your client are in alignment, they'll want to recommend you When Abagail first started her branding and marketing company, she had a referral partnership with another designer and shared that you would be shocked by what one solid relationship can do for a business Reawaken a relationship, even if it's been years between talking is as easy as sending a message and setting up a meeting Abagail says that you should go into interactions with an open mind about trying to understand the person and their needs and not be so focused on selling your services because not every interaction is going to produce a sale or client, and that's okay In 2016, Abagail was in a car accident that left her with a brain injury, and at the time, she was running her business full-time - luckily, they had some systems in place, but they weren't expecting such a random event as a car accident After the car accident, Abagail and Emylee started running their business with the focus that their lives will always be far more important than the work they do at their job Abagail shares that it takes time to prioritize your life first, and it takes the proper systems and support behind the scenes to make it work when life throws you curve balls that you aren't sure how to handle Having solid boundaries are important, and Abagail shares some of theirs Building a business can be isolating, and Boss Project is a safe community for you to get the support you need because it's okay not to know everything as a business owner If you want to talk about your business numbers, send Abagail a message, or if you're interested in working with the Boss Project, book a consult to talk with Abagail personally Connect with Abagail on Instagram Links mentioned: Boss Project Website The Strategy Hour Podcast The Incubator Program Boss Project Facebook Community Boss Project Consult Connect with Abagail on Instagram Boss Project YouTube Channel Boss Project on Pinterest Like what you heard? “If the goal is for this to be your full-time income, plus potentially the opportunity for you to scale and eventually move away from delivering the service yourself, it requires you to have an in-depth knowledge of what is needed to sustain your life and lifestyle and grow the kind of business that you want to grow,” explains Abagail Pumphrey. Abagail and Emylee are the co-founders and co-CEOs of Boss Project and the hosts of the chart-topping podcast The Strategy Hour. Together they have helped over 10,000 small business owners grow profitable and sustainable businesses. Today, Abagail and Emylee share their tips for scaling a service-based business. A service-based business model is one of the most profitable businesses because there is a lot less upfront cost to get started. This model is very accessible to begin with, but owners still need to be very clear on their long-term goals and have strong boundaries in place in order to scale successfully. One common mistake is undercharging for services and essentially doing a bunch of work for free. It's important to have a good understanding of the numbers and set appropriate rates if the goal is to generate a full-time income. In order to successfully run and scale a service-based business, you have to be really clear on what your long-term goals are, not only for the business itself but also for your personal life. Build your business around your desired life, rather than trying to fit in your life around the business. Quotes“Every time I prioritize holding my boundaries, protecting my creative space, honoring how I want to show up for work and be a leader, and work with my team, every time I prioritize space there and openness and creativeness, we win.” (3:51-4:09 | Emylee)“If the goal is for this to be your full-time income, plus potentially the opportunity for you to scale and eventually move away from delivering the service yourself, it requires you to have a in-depth knowledge of what is needed to sustain your life and lifestyle and grow the kind of business that you want to grow.” (10:31-10:53 | Abagail)“Service-based business owners don't think of how many consequences come from what you're priced at.” (12:15-12:20 | Emylee)“Just cause you're making money doesn't mean you're not working for free.” (14:05-14:07 | Emylee) “If I am really aware of what I want my personal life to look like, then I can design a business around my life.” (25:16-25:24 | Abagail)LinksConnect with Welcome to ElomaInstagram: @welcometoelomaWebsite: WelcometoEloma.comWeekly Email Newsletter: bit.ly/RIXEmail Connect with Abagail Pumphrey & Emylee Williams:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bossproject/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/thinkcreativecollective/Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/bossprojecthq/_saved/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/bossprojectchannelWebsite: https://bossproject.comPodcast:
In the first official episode of season 4 of the Resilient by Design Podcast, I'm joined by 2 powerhouse women, Abagail Humphrey & Emylee Williams, in a riveting conversation where we cover it all and then some. Abagail, Emylee, and I share a passion for systems and processes and we talk all about growing your business in an internal and smart way. This incredible conversation covers a large gamut of business topics, while Abagail and Emylee share a realistic approach to growing a business while taking into consideration the economy we find ourselves in. If you're looking to grow your business but you're thinking, “the world is changing shouldn't affect me”… well, this episode is for you! About Abagail & Emylee Abagail and Emylee are the business fairy godmothers behind Boss Project and the hosts of the chart-topping podcast, The Strategy Hour. They're internet-famous for their program, Trello for Business, which breaks down boring and complicated systems into bite-size chunks. They have helped over 10k creative small business owners create simplicity and ease in reaching their goals. After getting their start in 2015 serving clients in the marketing and branding space, they now help other service-based business owners reignite their offer, create systems for client experience, and get more of their time back into their program, The Incubator. The team at Boss Project is truly revitalizing the service-based industry through strategies that don't require flashy marketing, a huge audience, or full-time hours. During the conversation, we got into all things economic times along with the power of having a core service offering and how this can help you gain new and returning clients. These two women have an incredible knack for understanding the power of systems and really communicating the importance of that in your business and your sales focus. We dive into the distinction between repeat and brand-new clients, and share how investing in repeat clients will give you the most bang for your buck. There are so many more topics in this episode like, regularly increasing your rates so that you can pay for everything but still remain profitable, focusing on your client, having front and back-end offerings, and much more. You started your business so you could do what you LOVE and do it on your own terms. How's that working out for you so far? Because when Marissa first started her original business at Beautifully Organised, she spent some time doing what she enjoyed, but she also had to spend a lot of time trying to find her next client, and the one after that, and the one after that. With a service based business, almost all of us start out undercharging because we're worried about whether a potential client will say yes to working with us, and we've done so much work just finding this person and getting in front of them that the last thing we want to do is chase them away with a price they aren't happy with! That leads to us working more hours than we expected just to make enough money to cover the bills. And there's only so many clients we can serve in a week! After a few months of this, it doesn't feel like we LOVE what we do anymore, and we're certainly not doing it on our own terms. But without putting time, effort, or money into marketing, we can't get clients, and without clients, we don't have a business, right? Not necessarily - in fact our guests today say you can make more and work less without relying on any of the typical things we do to market ourselves like relying on social media, a fancy opt-in, or any ad spend. Abagail Pumphrey and Emylee Williams are the business fairy godmothers behind Boss Project and the hosts of the chart-topping podcast, The Strategy Hour. They're internet-famous for their program, Trello for Business, which Marissa personally has and loves because it breaks down boring and complicated systems into easier, bite-sized chunks. They have helped more than 10 thousand creative small business owners create simplicity and ease in reaching their goals. After getting their start in 2015 serving clients in the marketing and branding space, they now help other service based business owners reignite their offer, create systems for client experience, and get more of their time back inside their program, The Incubator. Tune in as Marissa chats with Abagail and Emylee about building a life-first business, growing your biz without being on social media all the time, running ads or making multiple lead magnets and opt ins, and what service based business owners should focus on instead of marketing! Abagail Pumphrey is the co-founder of the Boss project, top podcaster of The Strategy Hour, and a woman who continually paves the way for honest conversations about life and business. Some of themes for today’s show are keeping promises to yourself, mental and physical health and the journey to healing after trauma. As a disclaimer, we do talk about subjects that could be emotionally triggering such as bipolar depression and suicide. If you feel as if these topics would cause emotional distress, feel free to jump over to another deeper life episode. Top quotes from Abagail on this episode:At one point I realized, all of my ambitions in life centered around pleasing other people, but none of it was actually for me. You have to be willing to ask yourself why everyone else comes first and you’re the last person in line.We hide from things because it’s hard and we don't know how to process. It feels easier to hide than to experience the pain of processing it, even though that’s what leads to healing.Share your scars and not your wounds when it comes to being vulnerable on a public platform.Connect with Abagial:IG: @abagailsaysHer blog: simplyhomekc.comBoss ProjectThe Strategy Hour PodcastConnect with Alexis on Instagram! #093 — Not Your Typical Schedule: Lean into Business Freedom Part of the appeal of entrepreneurship is the freedom to set our own schedules. Yet many of us fall into the trap of keeping traditional hours, feeling obligated to fill our days with eight-plus hours of nonstop work. What if we leaned in to the freedom and flexibility that entrepreneurship affords? What if we took advantage of opportunities to do things for ourselves—outside of both work and parenting? And what if that made us BETTER business owners and moms? Today, Emylee Williams joins me to explain how she set up a three-day work week that bakes in time for her personal needs. Emylee describes how her schedule evolved and how that evolution was informed by becoming a mom. She also discusses the growth of her business, Think Creative Collective, explaining the benefits of transitioning to a one-to-many model. I ask Emylee about the process of adopting her daughter P., and she shares her fertility challenges and fears around adoption. Listen in for Emylee’s insight on having a biracial family and learn how she is taking advantage of the freedom of entrepreneurship to spend time with her daughter, grow her business, and make time for herself! Right now, you are a creative entrepreneur who is KILLING it. I want to challenge you to take a tiny step into the CEO role of your business in this episode today and give you a step by step on how to make that happen. I brought on Abagail from Think Creative Collective who gets real actionable when it comes to this transition.
As you're tumbling along your road as a creative entrepreneur, don't you wish you had someone to look to that's tumbled down that road, too? And because of those ups and downs, and twists and turns, can offer you honest wisdom, clarity, and reassurance as you figure out what passion of yours can become a profitable and sustainable business? Look no further than Abagail Pumphrey and Emylee Williams, the cofounders of Think Creative Collective! Referring to themselves as biz fairy godmothers, TCC offers a multitude of business courses and acts as a resource hub for creative entrepreneurs. The two met through a Facebook group centered around encouraging other creative entrepreneurs and supporting their businesses. They connected on helping entrepreneurs find the confidence to charge what they were worth, and begin building businesses around what they were passionate about. The two ended up hosting a webinar and co-selling a course together, and within two weeks of knowing each other, they decided to start TCC while brainstorming on the floor of Abagail's office. The company started as a marketing and branding boutique in September of 2015. They offered photography, design, and marketing for creative small business owners. As of January 2016, it evolved into online course selling, and now features a blog, and a podcast called the Strategy Hour. Another new addition to TCC's website is the course, 4 Days to a Sexy System. This system challenges clients to stay organized to increase productivity in their daily lives in order to drive their businesses and accomplish personal goals. By following this structure, Abagail and Emylee feel that it will create a productive system that will hold up throughout the year, and increase the sustainability of their business. The challenge begins by asking clients where they keep their information and can they stream line it to one place. Day two consists of planning out their goals for the year, finding out what they have to do to reach them, and figuring out how those goals will lead to profit inside their business. On Day three, they break down those goals and set up achievable tasks, with day four pushing you into action. The two are extremely dedicated to giving creatives an epicenter for advice and guidance by creating a community for new and tenured entrepreneurs. They want to be the mentors that they wished they had when they were building their business. They also know what it feels like to be a hot mess in an intimidating and scary time in your career, because they had a rocky take off themselves. Originally, Abagail had a dream of living the corporate life and working for big national brands, with her degree in design and fine arts. After college she began working for a small agency and knew right away that she did not belong in that world. Like so many people with the heart of an entrepreneur, she simply couldn't work for another person or company any longer. She also had a lot of moral conflicts with the company because she felt that a lot of their practices were illegal. Her conscience was relieved when she was laid off, and with her husband's trust, she started her own company. When she felt her layoff coming, she started a blog and a website within a weekend. She began blogging five days a week, and gained clients through networking and reaching out to people she saw needed her help. She dabbled in a little of everything and helped non-profits, start-ups, and worked on in-house design projects to build 8 foot banners, brochures, and full websites. You name it, she was your girl. She was also able to start with zero debt, and continue with no in-house expenses. Within 30 days she had replaced her income and was making more than he was! Emylee, on the other hand, wanted to go into social work and eventually wanted to become a college professor. Two weeks before grad school started, she unenrolled and walked away from school. When she returned home she had a crisis moment in her nana's guest room, unsure about where she wanted to go in life. With a degree in fine arts and photography, coupled with graduating in a recession, there was absolutely no job to be had. However, she knew she wanted to be in control of something, and wanted it to be a passion. So she started her own photography business in Oklahoma and eventually grew it to obtain a five figure salary. She loved working with other creatives and collaborating on projects, but she also loved that she got to lead and give others constructive criticism on their businesses and inspiring entrepreneurial confidence. All right guys, we are back for another tactical throwback. Today, we are taking it back and now sitting down to interview Abagail about all of the lessons she learned, the mistakes she made, and how the heck she got clients when she was doing one-on-one client work for branding, design, and website business building. So today we are going to give the quick version of what Abbie did before because not everyone knows that she has not been doing Think Creative Collective forever. We will learn a bit more about what she used to do, and dive into the tactics she used to grow her business. Prior to TCC, Abagail worked in the corporate design world. After completing her fine arts degree, she went straight out of the gate and started working for big and small businesses alike. She worked with business of all shapes and sizes, anywhere from billion dollar, to nonprofit, to education business. She even worked for a startup and then eventually was laid off, which is really where she faced her crossroads and had to make a decision whether to start her own business or simply look for another job. Abbie was definitely ready for a challenge and decided to pursue her dream of having her own business. So get ready, get your socks on, it’s going to be a good one. Thank you for listening! This week's Courage & Clarity conversations are double the fun as I'm joined by not one, but two brilliant business ladies: Emylee Williams & Abagail Pumphrey, the founds of Think Creative Collective. Emylee & Abagail are the brains behind this strategy powerhouse which offers courses, a podcast and lots of clarity for frazzled entrepreneurs who want to get more sh*t done. But of course, there's more to this story than a couple of bosses who've got it all figured out. Emylee dropped out of graduate school two weeks before her program began and originally thought she'd own a cupcake business. Abagail climbed the corporate ladder in the web design world only to be laid off from work. In this episode these two spill all the details of their individual paths to doing meaningful work on their own terms, including lots of bumps & bruises along the way. My favorite part, though, is how they decided to come together. After joining forces to run a webinar together, the two sat on the floor of Abagail's home office and realized their values & aspirations were so similar -- and, that they had a blast building cool stuff together. Think Creative Collective was born.In addition to these inspiring stories, you'll hear: How Emylee went from making next to nothing as a photographer for a year, to walking out of a client's house with a $1500 check How the two completely overhauled their business model -- which allowed them both to take January completely off, and both have only worked part time so far in 2017What to look for in a co-founder relationship, and how to test it out before going "all in" SHOW NOTES: Fizzle - try it for 5 weeks, cancel any timeThink Creative Collective TCC on Instagram Courage & Clarity episodes with Natalie Franke

On this episode we had the privilege to chat Abagail, the other half of the amazing duo that is Think Creative Collective. She is getting real on how her corporate "pink slip" lead her to truly owning her passion for helping other people. She really is all about community over competition especially because to her its "All About the People"!
