Yann Toutant is the founder of Black Winch, which helps businesses understand the opportunities, practicalities and benefits of shifting to ‘as a service' models, and supports them in making it happen. Yann has been implementing subscription-based models for hardware in the ICT industry for 25 years, including over a decade as CEO of Econocom's Dutch operations. Today with his own company, Black Winch, Yann Toutant helps CEOs and their teams to focus on the user experience by incorporating all components of an As-A-Service offer into a single in-house comprehensive, scalable subscription model. Yann sees offering a doorway to circular economy as one of the main drivers, making it possible to centralise ownership and to industrialise circularity at scale. We discuss why ‘as a service' is becoming more popular, for business customers as well as for people in general, and then Yann talks about some of the benefits for service-based businesses, and how Black Winch helps its clients take the first, easy steps to ignite that journey. Yann explains how, for some products, ‘as a service' is likely to exist alongside traditional ownership models, and what he sees as the motivators for that.
Modernizing government agencies has become more effective with the emergence of “as-a-service” IT delivery models, which offers a streamlined approach and better user experience to delivering IT solutions especially in the age of cloud. The Benefits of the As-A-Service Model Shep Hyken interviews Yann Toutant, founder of Black Winch and author of AS A SERVICE: Turn Your Product Based Business Into a Subscription Model. He talks about what an As-A-Service model is and how it impacts the customers, the business, and the environment. Top Takeaways: Usership means using – not buying – what you need for the experience you want at a specific moment and location. For example, customers who enjoy windsurfing do not need to purchase, store, and maintain a windsurfing board. They can go to a good windsurfing shop and rent, lease, or subscribe to the “use” of the equipment for as long as they want. Customers often have many possessions that require their time and money to manage. In an As-A-Service model, customers become users instead of owners. Through usership, products will fulfill a need without the burden of maintenance, storage, and the added cost of owning. The benefit of usership in the As-A-Service model is that when the product or solution a customer subscribes to is no longer needed, they can easily opt out of it without being left with something they can't use. The As-A-Service model creates a circular relationship with customers. The interaction does not end when the sale is closed. Instead, companies provide an experience where customers have a much stronger connection to the brand through regular (daily, weekly, monthly) contact. There is a positive environmental impact with the As-A-Service model for physical products. When a user no longer needs a product, another user can use it, or the manufacturer can refurbish or remanufacture it into new equipment. Plus, Shep challenges Yann to think of a product that cannot be transformed into an As-A-Service or subscription model. Tune in! Quote: "Do you own your belongings, or do your belongings own you? I decided to rid myself of many belongings anchoring me down and go for usage instead of ownership. You don't need to own something to get the best experience.” About: Yann Toutant is the founder of Black Winch, where he helps organizations focus on the customer experience by implementing a successful and scalable As-A-Service Model. His book, AS A SERVICE: Turn Your Product Based Business Into a Subscription Model, is now available on Amazon.

Cloud computing - We all talk about it, but what exactly is it and how do we buy it? In this episode of Buying Tech we talk about PCs, servers, apps and virtualization - and how these concepts relate to cloud computing for small, large and enterprise/government scale IT. We will cover various types of cloud offerings and what they involve: Infrastructure As a Service (IaaS) Software as a service (SaaS) Storage as a Service (STaaS) Security as a Service (SECaaS), and; Platform as a Service (PaaS). We also discuss key risks and issues to consider: are backups still important and what else do we need to think about if considering moving something - or everything - to the cloud? Connectivity, security, data privacy, planning for the future, contractual concerns and financial issues, as well as some of the pros and cons of cloud versus more traditional approaches to deploying and operating your IT systems. Channels have always been a critical part of most organizations' Go To Customer strategies. They are critical to extending our coverage of the market, accessing markets with specialized expertise, and in helping provide our customers more complete solutions. Managing channels for optimum performance in the face of rapidly changing buying processes and cloud based solutions creates challenges neither suppliers nor channel players have faced in the past. For example, many of the IT centric products and services are seeing radically changing buying--shifting out of IT into end users. This drives a change in the channel, helping them shift their approaches to the buyers or finding partners that have access to those buyers. Shifting from business models where products/services were sold outright, to today's models where products and services are frequently packaged as "As A Service" offering requires new business models, new skills, new capabilities both in the supplier and channels. Rapid digitization of our customers businesses provide yet another challenge and opportunity to both suppliers and channel participants. Managing these transitions, helping partners manage these transitions is a very complex process. It requires new thinking, new relationships, new partner enablement programs, and in some cases new partners. Simon Minett, Head of Global Sales Operations for Unify, has been leading their transition from a primarily direct field sales orientation to a channel deployed orientation. The discussion Simon and I had, is one of the most fascinating and wide ranging conversations on this topic that I have had. We cover everything from managing the transition to channel first, developing capability in the channel, shifting priorities and business model, rising complexity and managing that complexity, to critical elements in channel performance management and enablement. It's a longer discussion than normal, but this topic is so critical, it was important that we cover this topic in some greater depth. I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I enjoyed the conversation with Simon Minett!
Duke Long Commercial Real Estate With A Little Attitude Podcast
Commercial real estate has evolved from a Products Era to a Products and Services Era. We then went from Products and Services to the Customer Focused Era and eventually to where most think we are now, and that is the Relationship Focused Era. You hear and see it every piece of press every day. “Commercial Real Estate Is A Relationship Business.” I understand why that needs to be the mantra of commercial real estate, but I must disagree with that to a point. The rest of the world and commercial real estate itself has fundamentally moved on. We are now in the “As A Service” stage of commercial real estate. This is a fundamental shift in the way, not only we in commercial real estate but the entire business world now works.
On this episode, Ben, Daniel, and Stephen discuss the important and often diverse tasks of supporting people using software products. The conversation includes getting feature requests, bug reports, and questions about how best to use the product.
