Imagine the freedom of taking control of your mental dialogue. In today's episode, we'll explore 10 powerful strategies to stop negative thinking and build a positive, growth-focused mindset. Awareness and Reflection Recognize and Label Negative Thoughts Pay attention to when you're caught in a cycle. Label the thought as negative and decide you'll change the pattern. Negative thoughts don't improve with recycling! Quote: “You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.” – Jon Kabat-Zinn Action: Journaling can help identify recurring negative patterns. Keep a small notebook handy to jot down thoughts and patterns as they arise. Sometimes, just getting them out of your head and onto the page will break you free of the thought hamster wheel. Challenge and Reframe Your Thoughts Ask yourself, Is this true? Is it helpful? Replace negativity with positive, factual alternatives. For example, “I can't do this” becomes “I'm learning, and I'll get better.” Quote: “Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right.” – Henry Ford Action: Write down the thought you're stuck on and ask yourself these 4 questions: 1. Is it TRUE? 2. Am I 100% certain it's true? 3. Who am I because I believe this, and 4. Who would I be if I stopped believing it? Practice Mindfulness and Stay Present Use mindfulness techniques like deep breathing, grounding, or meditation to anchor yourself in the present and prevent spiraling. Quote: “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” – Buddha Action: Try a simple 5-4-3-2-1 grounding exercise when overwhelmed: name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, and 1 you can taste. Today, I focus on the detrimental effects that negative thoughts can have on our emotional state, relationships, and ability to pursue our goals, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and addressing these thought processes. Negative thinking can feel like a relentless force, pulling us deeper into a state of anxiety. As I unpack the ways in which our minds can spiral into darkness, I reflect on a core truth: when we are already feeling overwhelmed, the last thing we need is to amplify our distress with negative self-talk. Many of us carry the weight of life's ups and downs, and it becomes vital to understand how our mental bias towards the negative can exacerbate our feelings of fear and hopelessness. I discuss how this mental pattern not only alters our mood and outlook but can become a vicious cycle, where pessimistic thoughts feed on one another, leading to a compounded state of anxiety. I delve into the physical ramifications of negative thinking, discussing how this mental turmoil can manifest as chronic fatigue, headaches, and other physical symptoms. As I describe my work with clients, I bring attention to the relational impacts: how negativity can lead to irritability or withdrawal, which in turn alienates those who provide support. I emphasize that negative thinking erodes self-confidence, creates mental barriers to achieving our goals, and fosters a cycle of self-doubt that can hinder growth and fulfillment. Empowering Teams through Embracing AI-Driven Solutions and Customer-Centricity Shep Hyken interviews Rony Vexelman, Vice President of Marketing at Optimove. He discusses why broken customer journeys create poor customer experiences and how brands can avoid them by leveraging AI, personalization, and customer-centricity at every step of the journey. This episode of Amazing Business Radio with Shep Hyken answers the following questions and more: Why is it essential for brands to understand and orchestrate the customer journey? What are some common pitfalls that lead to broken customer journeys? How has technology changed the approach to customer journey mapping? How can AI tools empower professionals to expand their roles? Why is it essential for brands to break down silos within their organization? Top Takeaways: Broken customer journeys result from multiple departments working in silos without integrated communication. Each department may have its automation system, which may lead to conflicting or uncoordinated customer experiences. By breaking down these silos and working towards a centralized system, your company can ensure a unified and smooth customer journey. Businesses need to prioritize customer needs and experiences over pushing products or campaigns. When making decisions, even the tough ones, it's important to consider how these changes will impact customers and how to communicate them effectively. You will not always make decisions that will make your customers happy. For example, raising prices is not an easy topic to discuss with customers, but it is, at times, necessary. Acknowledge how it impacts your customers and communicate it with them. Traditional journey mapping focuses on creating an ideal journey for most customers, often neglecting outliers. With today's technology, businesses can personalize the customer experience at scale, catering to individual preferences and needs. AI can empower “positionless professionals”, encouraging individuals to expand their skills beyond their specializations. With AI tools, employees can take on tasks outside their usual roles, becoming more versatile and adaptable. This adaptability can result in faster execution, better employee experiences, and better customer experiences. Extending personalized experiences beyond physical interactions, such as at a reception desk, to online platforms can significantly enhance the customer's perception of the brand. Plus, Shep and Rony discuss why "breaking down silos" is still a hot topic for organizations after decades. Tune in! Quote: "Do your marketing from a customer point of view, not from a product point of view. " About: Rony Vexelman is the Vice President of Marketing at Optimove. The host emphasizes the importance of understanding that some level of anxiety is natural and can actually help keep us focused. However, for those already dealing with anxiety, additional strategies are needed to manage performance-related fears. The host suggests various techniques to prepare for auditions or performances, such as practicing in different environments, engaging in mindfulness and relaxation exercises, and developing a pre-audition routine. The concept of power posing, as discussed in the book "Presence" by Amy Cuddy, is recommended to boost confidence and alter body chemistry to better handle stress. Visualization is highlighted as a powerful tool to prime the mind for positive outcomes, and seeking support from friends, family, or a coach can provide encouragement and reduce feelings of isolation. Reframing auditions as opportunities for growth rather than make-or-break events can help alleviate pressure and foster a growth mindset. Self-care is emphasized as crucial for managing anxiety and stage fright, including adequate rest, hydration, nutrition, and engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation. Journaling or seeking therapy can also be beneficial for emotional release and promoting a tranquil state of mind before performances. Overall, by implementing these strategies and taking care of oneself, anxious performers can transform their approach to auditions, navigate them with greater ease, and showcase their authentic selves without the fear of failure. The host ends the episode with a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt encouraging listeners to do one thing every day that scares them. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Benefits of the As-A-Service Model Shep Hyken interviews Yann Toutant, founder of Black Winch and author of AS A SERVICE: Turn Your Product Based Business Into a Subscription Model. He talks about what an As-A-Service model is and how it impacts the customers, the business, and the environment. Top Takeaways: Usership means using – not buying – what you need for the experience you want at a specific moment and location. For example, customers who enjoy windsurfing do not need to purchase, store, and maintain a windsurfing board. They can go to a good windsurfing shop and rent, lease, or subscribe to the “use” of the equipment for as long as they want. Customers often have many possessions that require their time and money to manage. In an As-A-Service model, customers become users instead of owners. Through usership, products will fulfill a need without the burden of maintenance, storage, and the added cost of owning. The benefit of usership in the As-A-Service model is that when the product or solution a customer subscribes to is no longer needed, they can easily opt out of it without being left with something they can't use. The As-A-Service model creates a circular relationship with customers. The interaction does not end when the sale is closed. Instead, companies provide an experience where customers have a much stronger connection to the brand through regular (daily, weekly, monthly) contact. There is a positive environmental impact with the As-A-Service model for physical products. When a user no longer needs a product, another user can use it, or the manufacturer can refurbish or remanufacture it into new equipment. Plus, Shep challenges Yann to think of a product that cannot be transformed into an As-A-Service or subscription model. Tune in! Quote: "Do you own your belongings, or do your belongings own you? I decided to rid myself of many belongings anchoring me down and go for usage instead of ownership. You don't need to own something to get the best experience.” About: Yann Toutant is the founder of Black Winch, where he helps organizations focus on the customer experience by implementing a successful and scalable As-A-Service Model. Self-transcendence is found in the here and now, as we release attachments to past regrets and future worries. By immersing ourselves fully in the present, we cultivate a deep sense of peace, contentment, and connection with the unfolding reality. Actionable item: Practice gratitude by listing three things you are grateful for at the end of each day. This exercise shifts your attention to the positive aspects of the present moment and helps you cultivate a mindset of appreciation. Journaling prompt: Write about a past regret or future worry that you often dwell on. How can you shift your focus to the present and find peace in the now? What are three things you are grateful for in your current circumstances?

Welcome to our segment to expand on the quotes featured in The Black Foster Youth Handbook: 50+ Lessons I learned to successfully age-out of foster care and holistically heal I am your host, Ángela Quijada-Banks & so excited you've decided to join the journey toward Soulful Liberation! Today's Quote: “Do not follow where a path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail” -Ralph Emerson Foster Care is a whole other world that most of the world's population knows little to nothing about. Many people do not know the very low statistics young people endure in order to successfully age-out of foster care. Less than 5% of young people with the experience of foster care graduate post-secondary education. There are many youth who become prey to sex-trafficking or susceptible to suicide due to homelessness, mental health challenges and no support system. Now, couple the child welfare system with the element of racial injustices and the history of white supremacy and the topic may even become taboo. Ángela Quijada-Banks, a woman of African and Indigenous descent has taken the liberty of giving back to these communities for a half a decade through advocacy, advisory and organizational training. Through her travels across the nation, speaking to congressional members, federal stakeholders and constituents of the foster care system she decided some sort of manual was needed to combat the shocking low success rates of young people with the background of foster care. This handbook is written to be supplemental to young people in foster care's navigation through foster care and healing beyond it. Supportive adults such as foster/resource parents, case managers, GALs, therapists and social workers will also find this to be helpful in their roles in young people's lives. Success is possible regardless of where you come from, you just have to know where to look, who to trust and believe in the one person that can get you to the other side of pain and trauma, you. This Veterans Day, we share our interview with Major Eric Connor of the United States Army Reserve. He has a total of 28 years of service, currently serving as United States Army Reserve, Chief of Public Affairs for the Aviation Command, based in Fort Knox, Kentucky. He also worked in television production, in front of and behind the camera, from news anchor to executive producer and everything in between. Originally from Los Angeles, California, he relocated to Shreveport, Louisiana at age sixteen. He'd made a pact with his cousin that they'd attend high school together. Either the cousin had to move to Los Angeles or Eric would need to move to Shreveport. He never looked back. He attended Grambling University, one of the Historic Black Colleges and Universities based in Louisiana. Eric's favorite words include a quote and two books. Quote: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. His two favorite books are The Autobiography of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and The Five People You Meet in Heaven. Eric's favorite song is I Call Your Name by Switch. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe wherever you get your podcasts or visit us at 365brothers.com. It took a man's life and millions of people protesting in the streets amidst a global pandemic for me to realize (and then a lot of courage to accept) the fact that I am a silent participant in the centuries old problem of racism. I have been networking for more than two decades. After more than 20 years meeting people you would think that my network would be diverse. You'd be wrong. Among the hundreds of people I knew, I could count the number of people of color in my network on one hand, One hand! In episode 2, I talked about Analyzing your network, that analysis has not only taught me about the type of people in my network, but how homogenous my network really is! We can't change what we refuse to see. So I refused to not see the lack of diversity anymore and decided to call one of the women I had in my network to ask her how I could network with the people who don't look like me. Enter Cleonie Mainvielle & Pearl Farquharson. Founder of D.I.C.E (Diversity and Inclusion for Community Empowerment) and founder of TOAST (To Obtain Anything Start Thinking) respectively. Two women who believe in the power of networking and are helping me understand the networking experiences of women of color, the power of affinity groups as well as how we can begin to diversity our networks and organizations. As humans we gravitate towards things that are familiar to us, it's in our nature, we do it because we feel safe when things are known. This is part of the problem. We need to move out of our comfort zones in order to grow. We need to treat Multi diversity networking the same way, as a place to grow and make the world a better place for everybody by focusing upon people's personality, respecting their beliefs and life experiences instead of how they look. You might assume if someone doesn't look like you, that you might not have things to talk about because they have different life experiences and grew up differently than you. Let me tell you this! The biggest commonality we share is that we are all human beings for fucks sake. So talk about being a human being, learn that there is beauty in our differences if you take the time to learn about them. My husband’s pastor moved last month, and they couldn’t get everything on the moving truck, so we took a trailer load with the rest of their stuff. We loaded up and left at 4 am to head out. I had checked out the status of covid cases along our route before we left, so I knew the areas we should not stop in. Most of the route had falling numbers, so except for a couple of urban areas, that wasn’t really a concern. We headed to a small town in northwestern Oklahoma and arrived about 6 that evening. We checked in to an old school motel, one that still used keys. https://www.watongalodging.com/ The next morning, we went to the local state park for breakfast. We were able to get a hike in before we ate. Luckily, the restaurant wasn’t busy (it was a weekday and mid-morning), so social distancing wasn’t an issue. Then we went to the new church and parsonage to unload the trailer. We then spent the rest of the chatting. https://www.travelok.com/state-parks/6460 https://www.facebook.com/etnawesleyan/ The next morning, we got up and headed to Oklahoma City. Although I really wanted to go to the Oklahoma Memorial Museum, this was my decision I questioned the most. I was concerned about being in an urban downtown area and a tourist destination. However, I had visited the museum before and knew what an impact it had on me and I knew my husband would really appreciate the experience. We got to the museum right when it opened and were alone for at least the first 45 minutes or so. Then a group came through, but then were going through must faster than us and passed right by us. The way the museum is set up, there are lots of small sections with different pieces of the history. We stayed in one of those and the group just skipped right past it. We spent three hours at the museum and then headed outside to walk through the park. After the museum, we weren’t sure what to do. My husband is a sports and weather geek, so he suggested we head to Norman to visit Oklahoma University. In case you aren’t aware – which is likely most of you – the Women’s College World Series would normally be going on right now. We found the softball field, all wrapped up without anybody there when there would normally be about 2000 fans there to watch the game. We drove by all the sports facilities and then went to the National Weather Museum and Science Center, even though we knew they weren’t open. http://www.ou.edu/ https://www.ncaa.com/championships/softball/d1 https://nationalweathermuseum.com/ Since we still had some time before needing to find food, we then headed to the Will Rogers Airport. We found a great observation point and were able to see about ten planes take off or land in the hour or so we were there. https://flyokc.com/ We found a hole in the wall pizza place, Falcone’s, for dinner and had the most amazing pizza. We were able to sit in a corner out of the way but let me tell you this place was busy! There were constant people coming in and out. They had a Tiramisu dessert that I so wanted to try, but I knew I didn’t have enough room to do it justice. https://www.bestpizzaokc.com/ After our two-day break, we headed back home. While in the car, I was able to finish five books, so I got some great reading time in too. Thanks for joining me. We keep having this public policy debate and all these other things. There's some reality to that. But what we saw the real passion around was, as I mentioned earlier, flipping healthcare on its head. Instead of saying, why do we have to have people take care of people as patients, and disempower them, when what we can do is use this technology to empower people to actually self-manage their own condition. I mean, that's what you see people wanting to do. 20:00 - So we think we are unique in that AI space. Absolutely. REFLECTION QUESTIONS » Are you personally able to live in perpetual peace about the day of judgment? Why or why not? » What is the most difficult part of the concept of eternal judgment for you to get your arms around? Why? » If it is not about the deeds we have done, why are our deeds recorded in the books? (hint: see Truth #13) » Practice the memory verse. QUOTE “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” - Jesus SCRIPTURE “And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.” - Revelation 20:12 DEVOTIONAL Jesus was clear: there will come a day when God will judge the living and the dead and will separate them for heaven and for hell. Matthew 25, as only one example, is an entire chapter on the certainty of that day of judgment. As terrifying as that sounds, and it absolutely is, He was also clear that you can be ready for it now and live in a state of readiness with joy and peace. See, the final judgment will not be based on your deeds, but on your wardrobe. In Matthew 22, Jesus told a parable where a King prepared a wedding feast for His Son and invited all of His guests. However, when it was time for the banquet, they all had lame excuses and declined to attend; their busy lives were more important to them than the King's Son. The King made a new plan to ll the banquet so His Son would be honored: “So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.” Once the hall was full, the King noticed that there was one wedding guest who was not wearing wedding clothes. He erupted in outrage and asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?' The man was speechless. Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (This was a description Jesus frequently used for Hell.) What qualifies you for Heaven is not your deeds. On that basis, everyone is hopeless and deserves death. What qualifies you for Heaven is being clothed in the righteousness of Jesus, by faith in His sacrifice and resurrection. To be clothed with Christ, being otherwise naked in your sin and shame without merit. Jesus is making it clear that His Kingdom makes room for everyone, but that proper attire is required.

She has also generated thousands of articles, blog posts and recipes for publications such as SELF, Just Eat Smarter. (http://justeatsmarter.com/) Quote: Do one thing every day that scares you. - Jennifer Iserloh In addition, she has worked with both integrative and functional medicine doctors to produce their books and healthy eating programs, learning the science behind healing foods. After graduating with honors from the Institute of Culinary Education in 2003, she worked in kitchens throughout Manhattan as well as interning with cookbook authors like Tyler Florence (http://www.tylerflorence.com/) of the Food Network where she learned recipe development first hand. Shortly after, she pursued a career as a private chef for the following three years and worked in the homes of exclusive clientele such as Annie Leibovitz, Susan Sontag, and Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld. Throughout her hectic restaurant and private cheffing career, she maintains a strong yoga and meditation practice which enabled her to stay strong in a highly competitive field. Searching for a spiritual practice where she could incorporate her knowledge of healing foods and specifically cooking technique, she was led to investigate the wonders of ancient alchemy. Through alchemy, and her studies with the Alchemy Guild (http://alchemyguild.memberlodge.org/) , she shares her knowledge on how to combine spiritual practice with activities in the kitchen and beyond. Apart from her books, television appearances and writings, Iserloh continues to empower people to take a greater role in their holistic health and enjoy life more. Top 3 Hot Points:Functional Medicine vs "Traditional Doctors" The Healthy Balance of Alchemy Superfood Cooking and Slow Cooker Fun [spp-tweet tweet="Working with Superfood Nutrition with Body and Soul Alchemy with Jennifer Iserloh! You Too Can LIVETHEFUEL! @livethefuel "] Final Words:I just want people to have to be able to heal themselves, people that are suffering, need to understand that you have to heal holistically to really heal properly. So that's why Mind-Body Medicine is such a huge platform for me, and why support functional and integrative medicine. I work with these amazing healers and doctors. That's what I want to teach people because I didn't really heal from my illnesses until I heal them in the body and the emotions that are in the mindset. When you do that, you adjust your energy, everything goes up so that you can follow what your life's purpose is. and, or just, you know, have a happy family life. Just enjoy your life. People are starting to understand that this is what lifestyle medicine is, it is for medicine as holistic health. But you just have to make sure you're doing it the correct way, that you're not giving weight to one more than another. In traditional medicine, they think it's all about the body. Now, with what we've learned through science, spiritual practices, mindset, the special plant foods, I call the plant healers that heal people, it's got to be done in tandem. You gotta have each part equal, you know, equal player and band-aids. Welcome to Season 2 of the Do No Harm Podcast! The first episode of the season is an interview with Dr. Jon Robison, a national leader in the Health At Every Size Movement for more than 2 decades. Jon Robison holds a doctorate in health education/exercise physiology and a master of science in human nutrition from Michigan State University where he is Adjunct Assistant Professor. Dr. Robison is also Adjunct Associate Professor in The Holistic Health Care program at Western Michigan University. He has spent his career working to shift health promotion away from its traditional, biomedical, control-oriented focus, with a particular interest in why people do what they do and don’t do what they don’t do. Jon has authored numerous articles and book chapters on a variety of health-related topics and is a frequent presenter at conferences throughout North America. He is co-author of the book, “The Spirit & Science of Holistic Health - More than Broccoli, Jogging and Bottled Water, More than Yoga, Herbs and Meditation,” a college textbook and a guidebook for practitioners who wish to incorporate holistic principles and practices into their work. This book provided the foundation for Kailo, one of the first truly holistic employee wellness programs. Kailo won prestigious awards in both Canada and The United States, and the creators lovingly claim Jon as its father. Jon has implemented Health for Every Body® — a unique alternative to weight loss programs at the worksite in over 20 cities across the United States in the past 3 years. He is also one of the featured health professionals in the powerful documentary America The Beautiful II: The Thin Commandments and has been helping people struggling with weight- and eating-related concerns for 25 years. His new-released book: How to Build a Thriving Culture at Work: Featuring The 7 Points of Transformation, written with co-conspirator Dr. Rosie Ward gives organizations a realistic, step-by-step blueprint to accomplish the difficult task of transforming their cultures to be healthier and more productive — “from the inside out.” The book was selected by Employee Benefit News as one of the top must reads for 2016. As a Certified Intrinsic Coach, Jon understands that behavior is the outward manifestation of thinking and feeling – and that behavior modification approaches that focus on extrinsic motivation rarely result in sustained change and, in fact, often inhibit intrinsic motivation. Aside from his work Jon’s passions include his wife Jerilyn, music, humor, an 11-lb living Teddy Bear named Ginger and watching his gifted son Joshua play soccer. LINKS 5 things I learnt from living on a permaculture farm http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-eEP 5 Things I wish I knew About Homesteading Before I Started http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-eFj 5 Things To Love About Homesteading http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-eFJ **** This is the World Organic News for the week ending 17th of April 2017. Jon Moore reporting! This week we are on a journey of fives. 5 Things I learnt from Permaculture, 5 Things I wish I’d known about Homesteading and 5 Things to Love about Homesteading. From the blog: She Googled and She Went comes the post: 5 things I learnt from living on a permaculture farm. This is a really good read. Practical, common sense stuff for everyone. I’ll quote two of the five things learnt. Quote: Do every job with pride, and of course, use your brains. There are many ways to get things done – in permaculture, the word that stuck with me was optimisation. Using edges to achieve a multiplier effect and maximise output. And Find your purpose, and the people who share it. Being a permaculture newbie, I was surrounded by people who had already been researching on how to build their earth bag house or build their solar panel system. Everyone had a piece of land they owned or intended to own (and land outside of the city is very affordable, my friends), and here I am, a city girl from Singapore who always casually said I would retire on a farm but never really knew what that meant. End Quote. Purpose, pride, working with your brain and with others. This is a pretty fair way to live a good life. Permaculture is as much or as little as want. I heard a podcast a few years ago where the guest was explaining the difference between purple permaculture and brown permaculture. He was definitely in the brown camp. The brown is all about the landscape design, terra forming and farming for profit without damage or, if you like sustainably. The purple is all that plus peace, love and mung beans. To be fair, the brown permaculturalist wasn’t attacking the purples just pointing out the differences. This article gives another perspective on what Permaculture is and what it can teach. I’ll leave the rest of the article for you to read if you feel drawn to it. Our next two posts come from the blog Gypsyhomestead and are closely interrelated: firstly 5 Things I wish I knew About Homesteading Before I Started and secondly 5 Things To Love About Homesteading Things to know before you start: 1 Location 2 Choosing the Right Animals 3 The Cost 4 Predators 5 Physical Labour Let’s look a little deeper 1 Location Quote Another mistake in the location was the land around us. Yes it’s beautiful farmland, but at the same time that’s part of the problem. It is big farmland, belonging to those that are crop farming, which means chemicals. There are a lot of chemicals that are spread by tractor and airplane. End Quote. Finding like minded people is difficult at times but worth the effort. Learning to live with or accepting the ways of the locals can be difficult, it can be impossible. Organic production under aircraft borne spray drift, for example is impossible. Do not rush into that dream property. Choosing the Right Animals If you’re not going to consume what they produce, have a plan to deal with the excess. Can anyone really eat three dozen eggs each for eight months of the year? And remember good fencing makes for good neighbours! The Cost Quote: I know this is probably a pretty obvious no brainer. While I was aware of the cost of feed, fencing and all of that I failed to factor in vets and medication. I knew there were things I needed to keep on hand, but when it came to emergency farm calls those quickly brought home the grim reality that depending on the situation, vet and so on, it could really eat up any profit you earned and can cost hundreds of dollars for just one visit. End Quote On a personal note, I was in one part of my life 75 ks from town and veterinarian decisions we easy. A bullet costs far less than a vet visit. Predators Longish Quote: I only bring this up because I have run into a situation that has costed me quite a bit of money and a large loss of livestock this past winter. When I think of predators, I think fox, coyote, raccoon, skunk, weasels, possums, I did not think of rats. Yes rats, barn rats to be exact. First of all I wasn’t even aware we had them in the first place. Secondly they are dangerous and destructive to animals and feed. I lost all of my quail to these creatures as well as 2 hatches of chicks and a feed barrel has a hole chewed right through it. End Quote. Rats really are an evolutionary success story. They are also filthy, disease carrying vermin which need to be hunted down and eradicated. You cannot suffer them to be on your place. Really, I know people keep pet rats but wild, feral or whatever term you want to use, rats, they must be exterminated. Physical Labour Quote: I would have totally set things up differently to reduce some of the physical labor that is needed due to not smart decisions at the onset, labor that could be greatly used elsewhere. Getting a routine for your place is a good way of keeping control of your physical labor efforts. End Quote. In essence you need to have run a homestead wrongly before you can know how to run it well. Be prepared for huge amounts of physical labour until you learn to let the stock do the “work” for you. That’s all very sobering for those thinking about living the homestead dream but be not put off for Gypsyhomestead also speaks of the positives. What she loves about homesteading: 1 The Simplicity 2 Being self reliant 3 The Ability to do things your way 4 Peace and Tranquility 5 The Ability to create. Given that we all make some of the five errors listed previously, these five benefits are, whilst mostly intangible, more than enough to sustain anyone through the setup phases and through the setbacks as they come. Numbers 3 and 5 especially meant much to me when I was living out of town and will again when I get back out there. The ability to do things my own way and the ability to truly create are priceless commodities. These should never be forgotten, especially when the goats have escaped, again, or it hasn’t rained properly for three years or when you’re elbow deep in a ewe pulling a stuck lamb. Homesteading is about reconnection with Nature and all its travails and joys. That being said, Homesteading does not, I repeat DOES NOT, require large swathes of land. Certainly it is easier on few acres than a backyard but backyard homesteading is a thing and is possible. So too is urban homesteading that just takes a little more creativity and the search for land is half the fun. Think about those five things to love about homesteading: 1 The Simplicity 2 Being self reliant 3 The Ability to do things your way 4 Peace and Tranquility 5 The Ability to create. Surely they are reasons enough to start or continue your journey! And that brings us to the end of this week’s podcast. If you’ve liked what you heard, please tell everyone you know any way you can! Today I am going to give you my honest opinion about a financial sacred cow, qualified retirement plans (401K, 403b, 457b and I.R.A's). I have a very contrarian view that will be very different from what you have heard from your financial advisor, financial media, employer, family and friends. My goal is not to persuade you or have you agree with me. My objective is firstly to give you my honest opinion and secondly to get you to see a completely different perspective that will hopefully be the catalyst for you to do your own research, due diligence and fact checking to form your own independent opinion. Today on Business Machine is Eddie Donato from Australia, founder, and the host of the EdTalks podcast. This podcast interviews experts and studies research from all over the world to help people stop feeling tired, regain our energy and achieve health and happiness in a way that’s truly attainable for busy moms and dads. Starting as an engineer for General Motors, Ed traveled much and always had entrepreneurial dreams. After the birth of his son, Ed was inspired to leave a legacy and later, he stumbled upon entrepreneurial podcasting. Mission To help busy moms and dads regain vitality to live the life that they want to. In 10 years, Ed envisions a multi-billion dollar health and wellness company with numerous divisions, including charitable work, with a luxury boat and a family traveling the world. Learning From Our Mistakes Ed recalls that the most important thing he learned was making time for family. It’s easy to get caught up in his passion, especially for the sake of the family, but it’s paramount to make time to be present with his wife and son’s life. It’s not a matter of being there all of the time, but it is about listening and respect. Recommendations Eat: Settler’s Tavern. Quote: “Do not fear mistakes. Today on Business Machine is Samantha Riley, creator of The Accelerant Group. With over 20 years of experience, Samantha has built several highly successful businesses, and she uses these experiences to help thought leaders and entrepreneurs clarify their message to attract ideal clients. Mission The Accelerant Group ignites business growth so those businesses can make more impactful messages and charge higher fees. In 10 years, Samantha sees a small, beautiful office and happier people. Learning From Our Mistakes Samantha sees mistakes as learning experiences and one caution to new entrepreneurs is hiring someone who does not share the same values or passion as the business. Skills can be taught but fitting in either works or it doesn't. She also recommends that new business owners learn how to negotiate and think of the right questions when buying property.
