Drone and UFO sightings have been the rage on Long Island, New York, Rockland County, New York, New Jersey and other suburban areas along the East Coast. Most disturbing seems to be a versatile single passenger aircraft the size of a small car. Tom Kelly and Steve Burger go out to Bay Park in East Rockaway, Long Island New York near John F Kennedy airport to see if they can spot any drones. The two discuss "drone hysteria". Are these aircraft military, civilian or alien? Is this all hysteria? Are drone hunters increasing the amount of false drone sightings? Should the media be doing more to investigate this? We may not get you any answers. But you should be able to have a laugh by the end of this show! Show Notes: Give The Comedy Village Comedy Club a 5 Star Review and mention Tom Kelly in the review: Comedy Village

The Finest City

As we continue our journey through the C-3 Oral History Project, we welcome Judy Swink, a longtime C-3 champion, researcher, and librarian. Judy walks us through her early days in C-3, including how she joined amidst a battle over the location of the Naval hospital in Balboa Park. Judy also discusses how C-3 intersects many different interests, a few of the largest lessons she has learned in her work with Mission Bay Park and Beyond, and a few of her favorite takeaways from Clare Crane's work.   Timestamps: [3:50] Judy talks about how she came to San Diego in 1970 and became connected with San Diegans through the sailing community. [6:53] Judy discusses her focus on regional parks and developing knowledge on both Mission Bay Park and Balboa Park. [9:56] How did Judy's role evolve from administrator to becoming an active board member and long-time member? What else has she done as she was on and off the board for two decades? [14:28] Judy has acted in institutional history in many of the causes that C-3 has been active in. [19:22] What are some of the largest impacts that Dr. Claire Crane created in San Diego? Judy talks about the mark she left behind on education, civil rights, democracy, and women's rights. [26:00] What does Judy mean by her definition of “the maturation of democracy”? [29:12] One of the things that C-3 really got behind and did some major fundraising for was towards a civic center downtown so it was not just government offices, but a small convention center and a Civic Theater. [32:08] Judy talks about Esther Scott and how she made Lloyd Ruocco's vision happen, along with a number of women who have been extremely important to San Diego. [36:12] What drew Judy into C-3 was the balance of the natural environment, the built environment, and the economic benefits that incorporate the natural world into the built world. [44:10] As a sailor, Judy was familiar with the walling off the East Coast and private beaches, so she was aware of what had to happen when it became a city-wide effort to establish a coastal height limit and preserve our coasts from becoming a Miami Beach. [45:31] What are some of the greatest lessons learned from the battles that set the tone for the development of San Diego? [50:57] There are communities, such as East County, who are coming to recognize the importance of the principles C-3 has advocated for so many decades. [52:29] What were some of the economic difficulties post-war in San Diego? [57:10] What other groups have partnered with C-3? Who is still closely aligned with C-3 in many areas of interest? Judy discusses the League of Women Voters, and the Sierra Club. [1:03:01] What role did C-3 play in garnering the distinction of an All American City Award in 1969?   About C-3 In its 60 years of existence, Citizens Coordinate for Century 3 (C-3) has brought together local thought leaders from planning, design, policy, academia, community development, and more to address our region's distinctive and pressing land use challenges. In founding C-3 almost 60 years ago, architect Lloyd Ruocco's vision was to bring together our region's most creative minds from the arts, sciences, academia, and government to share ideas, learn new perspectives, and build fellowship around the idea of creating livable communities.   Opportunities for Advocacy and Engagement: C3sandiego.org Dr. Clare Crane Lloyd Ruocco Ellen Browning Scripps Sally Spiess League of Women Voters Sierra Club

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 13, 2020 48:55

Welcome back to the Happy Half Hour! Today we’re sipping beer virtually with Esthela Davila and learning about the educational nonprofit she cofounded, Mujeres Brew Club. Mujeres means “women” in Spanish, and Esthela created the monthly club along with Carmen Favela of Border X Brewing to provide a safe space for women, especially Latinas, to network, learn about craft beer, and break barriers in the industry. Mujeres Brew Club is inclusive and open to anyone who wants to learn about beer, and Esthela launched it in Barrio Logan—where she grew up—a neighborhood that is around 80 percent Latinx. Since its founding last summer, the club has acquired its own brewery space; they took over the former Alta Brewing in Bread & Salt, and Esthela shares their upcoming opening plans. Esthela also talks about how intimidating it is to go to a bar and not know what to order, how many people of Latinx descent are not exposed to craft beer, and why the industry needs to be more welcoming. Craft beer has a well-known diversity problem, and a report released last year by the Brewers Association showed nearly 90 percent of craft brewery owners are white, and barely eight percent of brewers are women. And yes, we talk about beer, and Esthela shares her current favorites--tune in to find out what they are. In Hot Plates, we have a lot of good news to share this week. Arlo, a restaurant led by a chef who cooked at Joël Robuchon in Las Vegas, opened its doors in Mission Valley (yes, Mission Valley!) yesterday. ¡Salud! in Barrio Logan reopened for service, and so did Mister A’s—their patio is open for dining starting next Tuesday, and they’re also offering takeout. Pandemic Pizza, a business started by two prominent local chefs who were furloughed, has found a home inside RoVino The Foodery. Chef Angelo Sosa, formerly of Death by Tequila in Encinitas (our readers’ choice winner for Best Restaurant in 2019) will be on a new cooking show on HBO Max featuring singer Selena Gomez, Selena + Chef. The first episode airs tonight. For Two People for Takeout, Esthela recommends Deft Brewing and Cucina Caprese, both in Bay Park. Troy’s pick is Chuy’s Taco Shop, and David selected Fall Brewing. My pick this week is Red Sea Ethiopian, which the Union-Tribune recently wrote a great article about. Thank you for listening! As always, we want to hear from our listeners. This week’s special guest is Rick Chapman, the co-founder of Coronado Brewing Company, which has been open for over 23 years. Rick and his brother, Ron, opened the brewpub in the heart of their hometown of Coronado in 1996. Since then, their beers have won some major awards, including the 2014 World Beer Cup Champion for Best Mid-Sized Brewery, and they won four medals at the 2019 Great American Beer Festival competition. They expanded in 2012 with a state-of-the-art production facility and tasting room in Bay Park, and in 2014, they opened up the Imperial Beach Restaurant. They have also expanded their brewhouse to meet the distribution demands of 16 states and 15 countries. For Two People, $50, Rick gave us a few choices: Kaiserhof Restaurant and Biergarten in OB, and his Coronado favorites, Village Pizza, Lil’ Piggy’s Bar-B-Q, and the Brigantine. Lauren chose George’s Level 2 because of their creative custom cocktails, like the pumpkin spice margarita. Erin chose Waypoint Public because of its family-friendly atmosphere and its beer cheese dipping sauce. Troy chose a favorite of many local chefs, The Joint in OB, but you will likely spend over $50 for this delicious, fresh food. In Hot Plates, we talked about how Accursio Lota, formerly of Solare, announced a while back he was going solo and took over the Cardamom Café and Bakery space in North Park to open a new Sicialian restaurant named Cori Pastifico. Park Commons, the new food hall in Sorrento Valley from Whisknladle, will be opening on November 11, and it will have five fast-casual restaurants and a full bar. This week’s Hot Topic is about labels on beer bottles going paperless! A recent article in Food & Wine talks about how Anheuser-Busch is experimenting with something called “direct object printing,” where they will apply the ink and varnish “label” directly on the glass, instead of using paper and an adhesive. Beck's Brewery is currently using this technology in the U.K. Thanks for listening, and we’d love to hear from you! Call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a message. We’re back with Happy Half Hour! Once again, we’re taping from Eppig Brewing’s Waterfront Biergarten in Point Loma and seriously, guys, if you haven’t checked it out yet, the views (and brews) are worth the trip. This week is a special one, for we have the one and only Peter Halmay, also known as the “Urchin King” of San Diego, as our guest. Peter is a local fisherman who has been diving for uni for over 30 years, and he is the president of the San Diego Fishermen's Working Group, a coalition of local fishermen that he started. Peter updated us on the $3 billion dollar waterfront redevelopment at the Port of San Diego and shared his ideas on how he believes the commercial fishing industry can thrive in the future. We loved his choice for Two People, $50—Five Guys at Liberty Station. The staff’s picks this week included Cowboy Star (although the $50 limit was a little questionable), The Red Door, and Tiger! Tiger! That brings us to Hot Plates, where we welcomed Original 40 Brewing Company to North Park. Check it out—Troy got the first look at the aesthetically-pleasing brewpub. If you haven’t heard, the landmark restaurant Old Trieste shut its doors after more than 50 years of serving fancy Italian fare in Bay Park. The Tomicich family was ready to retire. But, when one door closes, another one opens—Babycakes has returned to Hillcrest with a pop-up shop. Last but not least, for those in East County, there's a new farmers’ market in town! You can now get fresh produce every Wednesday at Grossmont Center from 2 to 6 p.m. For our Hot Topic, we're talking about a protein that according to the Washington Post, is going to go mainstream year: collagen. Collagen-infused drinks and powders claim to add a youthful, smoother look to skin, but evidence of whether the products actually work is limited. The Best of San Diego Party is coming up quick! Taste samples from more than 80 restaurants at the most delicious evening of the year. It’s on August 16 at Liberty Station. This event sells out every year, so don't wait to get your tickets. Insiders get a special discount on tickets and front of the line entry. Thanks for listening, and we’d love to hear from you! However, now we want to make it a center for the community. We’ve already had private events in it and we’re actually leasing it out now for events. Welcome back to the Happy Half Hour! We are taping this episode at Petco Park, and our very special guest this week is Mark “Mud” Grant, who has been the color commenter for the Padres for 24 years. He talks about his favorite places to eat in Petco Park, and what his diet was like when he played professional baseball in the late ’80s compared to how MLB players eat today. Mud says he will eat anything, but confesses there are two things he can’t stand (eggplant is one of them!). His pick for Two People, $50, was The Brigantine, and the staff liked Puesto, HiroNori Craft Ramen, and Coronado Brewing’s Bay Park location. In Hot Plates, we talked about Il Dandy, a new Italian restaurant in the base of the Mister A’s building in Bankers Hill, which opened with much fanfare (and Troy got the First Look). A new modern Vietnamese restaurant, Kingfisher, is taking over the former Kafe Sobaka space in Golden Hill. The owners of Farmer’s Bottega in Mission Hills are opening Two Bleu Ducks in North Park, which will serve breakfast in the morning and then beer, wine and light snacks in the evening. Finally, there’s lots of new vendors opening in Liberty Public Market, like BOPJO Seoul in a Bowl…or Tortilla! (a Korean-Mexican fusion restaurant) and Rob Ruiz’s new sustainable sushi spot, Hold Fast. The Hot Topic this week is fake meat: Is it taking over real meat? Beyond Meat was recently valued at $1.5 billion at its IPO, and The Impossible Burger is testing its meatless patties at Burger King—hear what Troy and the gang have to say. We want to hear from our listeners! Call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a message or email HappyHalfHour@sdmag.com. You can give us your recommendations for Two People, $50, or tell us about any news happening in San Diego’s culinary world.

As a result, we have more inventory than last year; currently, there are 1,900 more homes on the market than we had at this time in 2018. This is a good thing for homebuyers, but if you’re a seller, you can expect the market to be a bit slower.Home prices are actually still up, having increased 2.5% over last year. As of January, the median home price was $542,000, which is down from last summer’s peak of $583,000. We expect those numbers to adjust with the seasons, so it remains to be seen how the spring and fall markets will play out this year.“Keep in mind that real estate is always hyperlocal here in San Diego, and we’re subject to big swings. ”Keep in mind that real estate is always hyperlocal here in San Diego, and we’re subject to big swings. The higher-end homes in areas like Rancho, Santa Fe, and La Jolla are actually down 28% in terms of price. On the flip side, Oceanside is up 39% year over year. Here in Bay Park, we’re down about 8% from January of 2018.Mind you, those are very small sample sizes, and home prices can change dramatically, which is why we tend to look at San Diego County as a whole. I wouldn’t give too much credence to those figures. If you have any questions, you’re thinking of buying or selling a home, or would like to have a more in-depth discussion of market trends, please feel free to reach out to us. We’re actually starting to see more and more multi-generational families take an interest in these types of properties because they either want to take advantage of the rental income or they want to keep their family close. “The owners spared no expense in renovating everything. ”This property is listed at just under $1.3 million, and it features a 4-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom main house, a 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom attached granny flat, a detached two-car garage, and a rooftop deck with a view of the water. As you can see in the video above, the owners spared no expense in renovating everything. It has top-end appliances, an open floor plan, and plenty of space. This part of Bay Park doesn’t get a lot of traffic noise, and you’d be within walking distance of the nearest school. We’ve had some people already take an interest in this property, but so far we haven’t received any offers, so there’s still time for you to check it out. If you’d like to schedule a tour of this property for yourself or if you have any questions about it, don’t hesitate to give me a call or send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Plus, Ike’s sandwiches opens in the Midway district, Buona Forchetta opens its first North County location, and Farmer’s Table expands to Bay Park. Also, we talk about a fundraiser to help the cancer-stricken daughter of local beer icon Mike Hess. Our guest is Nica Knite, the owner and operator of Pine House Café & Tavern and the woman behind the revamp of the historic Pine Valley House & Silver Queen Saloon, a 95-year-old boutique resort, restaurant, and bar in Pine Valley, built by the architect Richard Requa (who built most of the California Exposition in Balboa Park). First, I want to tell you about how the real estate market fared in 2017 in San Diego. Then I have a special event to invite you to. Let’s start with a market wrap up from 2017.The median price for a home in San Diego at the end of 2017 was $540,000. That’s up 9.1% from the previous year. This strong appreciation was mostly driven by the strong economy, as more investors decided to take advantage of the low inventory and low interest rates that we’re currently seeing. In 2018, we expect the low inventory and low interest rate trends to continue.“Join us this Saturday, February 3 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ”As for the special event, I just wanted to make sure and invite you out to the grand opening of our new office in Bay Park. It’s really beautiful and we’d love for you to come out and take a look on this Saturday, February 3 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. We’ve got a big space set aside with artificial turf and we’ll have a lot of different things ready for you, including a bounce castle, a taco cart, giveaways from local businesses, and more. We would love for you to stop by.If you have any questions for us about the current market or about our grand opening this weekend, don’t hesitate to give me a call or send me an email. Today I have big news for our local market: We have finally set a new high for the median home price in San Diego County.Looking to sell your San Diego home? Get a free home value reportLooking to buy a San Diego home? Click here for full MLS accessJune has just begun, so I wanted to stop in with a quick market update. The big news is that we finally did it. We have set the new high in San Diego County for the median house price. Right now, the median house price is at $525,000. Believe it or not, the last peak we had was way back in 2005 at the top of the housing bubble. If you adjust for inflation, we’re still not quite up to the $644,000 that would signify a new high but essentially, we have done that at $525,000.“June and July should be strong months for our real estate market. ”If you look at the historical trends of 3% to 4% appreciation that we’ve seen in real estate for the last 80 years, then we are still a ways below that trend line, which leads many people to believe that we still have room to grow. Now, inventory and low interest rates are still driving appreciation, and we won’t see a fundamental shift there anytime soon. June and July should be strong months for our market before things start to cool down in late summer and early fall.Meanwhile, our office is under construction. We’ll let you all know about our grand opening as soon as we are officially moved into 4112 Napier Street in the heart of Bay Park.In the meantime, if you have any questions about our current market, give me a call or send me an email. I would be happy to help you!
