Ep. 233: Body-Based Interventions for Neurodivergent Students with Megan Beardmore, PhD, NCSP

Joining us this week on Diverse Thinking Different Learning is Dr. Megan Beardmore. Dr. Beardmore is a licensed school psychologist with expertise in assessing and treating children, adolescents, and young adults with neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities, as well as co-occurring anxiety and depression. She received her training at the University of Arizona, completed a postdoctoral fellowship at The Help Group, and worked at UCLA's Center for Autism Research. She uses evidence-based therapies such as CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and breathwork to support emotional regulation and foster the mind-body connection. Dr. Beardmore returns from episode 119 to discuss what happens when traditional behavior strategies or even well-known talk therapies simply are not working and to explore what is really going on inside the bodies and brains of neurodivergent kids when emotions run high. Dr. Beardmore helps us unpack the science behind emotional dysregulation. With real-world examples, she breaks down how the autonomic nervous system shapes behavior and why interventions that start with the body rather than the brain can often reach kids when logic and language are not working. Hear how body-based techniques like exhaling, rocking, and self-hugging can offer immediate access to safety and regulation, with our bodies often recognizing safety or danger before our brains even catch up. Also, learn why telling an upset child to “calm down” rarely works. Perhaps most strikingly, Dr. Megan Beardmore shares how small, everyday movements and sensory experiences can help both kids and adults move out of stress and into deeper connection. It's not about elaborate plans or complicated therapies; it's about practical and easily accessible tools that speak the body's language. Whether you're a caregiver, educator, or clinician, this episode offers a refreshing perspective on supporting emotional regulation through science, empathy, and some surprisingly simple strategies.   Show Notes: [0:07] - The nervous system greatly influences emotional regulation, especially in neurodivergent students, and Dr. Megan Beardmore joins us to address this. [3:15] - Dr. Beardmore explains that, like a seesaw, the autonomic nervous system seeks balance between stress response and calm. [6:50] - Recognizing behaviors as nervous system responses helps caregivers reframe them as unintentional and not defiant. [8:53] - Since 80% of signals travel body-to-brain, somatic techniques calm emotional overload effectively. [11:38] - Somatic tools, Dr. Beardmore explains, bypass logic, offering kids faster emotional regulation when reasoning is not accessible. [14:27] - Hear how deep breaths and movement-based strategies calm the nervous system by signaling safety. [17:53] - Parents can use these tools to regulate themselves and their child's nervous system during struggles. [18:32] - Learn how adults modeling self-regulation help children through mirror neurons. [19:39] - To emerge from a “freeze state,” movement, grounding, and heat gradually increase energy and activation. [22:48] - Accessible strategies that don't require fancy equipment help provide immediate support for nervous system regulation. [23:12] - Simple actions like humming or gargling stimulate the vagus nerve, improving nervous system regulation. [26:41] - Being mindful integrates body awareness and breathing to help manage stress, allowing thoughts to pass naturally. [29:49] - There are various tools which support nervous system health, tailored to body needs in different stress responses. [31:05] - Dr. Beardmore touches upon how curiosity around body responses assists with self-regulation. [34:26] - Asking “How do you feel?” can help kids connect strategies with emotional regulation. [36:22] - Dr. Beardmore argues that empowerment ultimately comes from regulating stress without external tools.   Links and Related Resources: Episode 72: Prioritizing Co-Regulation and Self-Regulation in Communication with Danielle G. Episode 120: The Plan B Chronicles: Divorce, Defiance, Liberation I had Meredith as a guest here on the podcast last June, episode 113 Taylor Swift and the Divine Feminine. We have since gotten to know each other a little better and when I heard that she was promoting her new book, I wanted to support her in spreading the word.  In The Plan B Chronicles: Divorce, Defiance, Liberation, psychotherapist Meredith Beardmore delivers a raw and compelling memoir chronicling her journey through betrayal, healing, and self-discovery. After discovering her husband's infidelity, Meredith's life spirals into chaos, challenging everything she thought she knew about love, trust, and personal strength. Drawing from her professional experience in therapy and somatic healing, Beardmore navigates the emotional wreckage while offering readers valuable insights and practical tools for overcoming similar challenges. Through her path of somatic therapy, spiritual awakening, and ultimately reclaiming her personal power, Meredith's memoir is a candid, inspiring account of how the darkest moments in life can lead to profound transformation. This book serves as both a healing guide and a story of empowerment, making it essential reading for modern women questioning their own relationships and seeking a way forward. I was happy to read a copy of her book last weekend- she is a great writer and storyteller and I loved the way she wove it all together… Nevermind the sprinkling in of messages from spirit and divine interventions along the way! Right up my alley! She did a beautiful job of making magic from her hardship and in turn will help loads of others who are on a similar journey. Meredith Beardmore is a licensed psychotherapist, author, and the creator of the YouTube channel Mend with Mere. Her second book, The Plan B Chronicles: Divorce. Defiance. Liberation., is a fierce and funny collection of essays about heartbreak, single motherhood, and rewriting your future when life blows up the blueprint. She's also the author of Hey Addiction, Thanks for Nothing: A Brutally Honest Guide to Loving an Addict Without Losing Your Mind, inspired by her years of supporting families of addicts—both professionally and personally. Meredith holds a master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The Ohio State University and integrates ACT, CBT, mindfulness, and expressive arts into her therapeutic work. Her writing has appeared in The Huffington Post, Buzzfeed, and Colman McCarthy's Teaching Peace. On this episode, I speak to 3 amazing people who you will also meet at the Extraordinary Travel Festival in Bangkok on November 15-17. First up is Fadi Assi. Many people in the extreme travel community are familiar with Fadi and his generosity. He has welcomed many of us to Syria. Fadi is the founder of .  Fadi will be one of the speakers in Bangkok and will be sharing his wealth of knowledge.  If you are considering visiting, make sure you check in with Fadi. Second is Jon Beardmore.  Jon is an accomplished traveler and has undertaken a fascinating project, The Galapagos Postman Project.  We all love travel and sometimes incorporating in an additional quest has the potential of really adding to your travel experiences.  The Galapagos Postman Project is one of those really cool quests.  You can follow along on his quest on . And third is Evelthon Vassiliou.  He is another accomplished traveler who recently accomplished the 193.  Evelthon was ahead of the curve visiting places like Angkor Wat in the late 1990s.  Despite finishing the 193, he is still actively traveling.  Follow along on . I believe there are 3 main pillars of why you might want to consider attending the ETF, this November in Bangkok. First is the destination. Maybe BKK might seem too common. Well as a resident I would posit that this city offers so much beyond the Grand Palace, the Skybar and riding a tuktuk. This is a true onion; you can keep peeling back more and more layers and keep on exploring. Maybe you are missing some NM regions in Thailand, maybe a funicular or the new UNESCO site, Si Thep. Or you missed Laos or Brunei on your last visit. There are cheap flights to everywhere in ASEASN. Or maybe catch a direct flight to Bangladesh, Bhutan or Kazakhstan. There is so much to see here! Second, is the content. We have an incredible lineup of speakers. More will be announced. Please take a moment to look at the speakers on the ETF website. Everyone from Thor Pedersen who went to every country without flying, or Renee Bruns who has explored over 130 countries in a wheelchair, or the Sultan Randy Williams, who invented his own country. And last up, is the community, the network of extreme travelers whether you are Chasing 193 or maybe enjoy Iraq more than Italy. Then you have found your tribe.  We have some great events to share a drink and conversation with your fellow travelers .... Friday night will be a great party with music, Saturday will be the gala dinner, and, don't leave early, we will be hosting the NomadMania Awards live in Bangkok on Sunday.  And we added in another meetup on Thursday evening, November 14th to check in with fellow attendees before the event officially kicks off on Friday morning.  The host of our meetup is . So think of Bangkok as the hub for the event. A hub with great infrastructure at great prices. The spokes are everywhere in Thailand or the region you can visit easily. Don't get FOMO, come join the 170 plus who have already committed. And how many more will sign up in the next 3 months. Should be a lot of people! Feel free to go to the website, use code to save $100, and join us in Krung Thep this November. If you have questions, reach out to me on SM, contact form on the website, or anywhere else. Please listen in and enjoy.  And check out the last episode on .

Episode 113 - Taylor Swift and the Divine Feminine with Meredith Beardmore I'm so excited to bring you today's episode! I will be geeking out about Taylor Swift and the Divine Feminine with therapist – and Swiftie- Meredith Beardmore. Meredith Beardmore is a psychotherapist operating a private practice, the author of Hey Addiction, Thanks for NOTHING!: A Brutally Honest Guide to Loving an Addict Without Losing Your Mind, and is also known as “Mend with Mere” from her successful YouTube Channel. Meredith is an Ohio State University graduate with a master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Meredith specializes in substance abuse treatment, helping family members of addicts and treating emerging adults with various issues, from identity development to depression. Her YouTube Channel, “Mend with Mere,” initially intended for therapy discussions, became a platform for analyzing song lyrics, primarily Taylor Swift's, garnering thousands of subscribers and over 5 million hours of watch time. I am so happy to have found MEND WITH MERE, and her channel where she often thoughtfully discusses, dissects and reacts to songs. I stumbled upon her page in the research that goes along w dissecting lyrics! The recent Taylor Swift album – the Tortured Poets Department- is rich with amazing and meaningful songs that really sent me down rabbit holes. I've recently become a Swiftie, and I'm not embarrassed to admit it! The more I've learned about Taylor Swift and her work, the more I've grown to love her! When she started the Eras tour last year I noticed all the girl mom friends of mine who went to see the show with their daughters were just as crazy to see her as their daughters were…  this intrigued me and I ended up watching the Netflix Special on her called “MISS AMERICANA”. From there I really grew to really respect her as an artist and person. It's clear she's a smart, self-aware and sensitive.  I only began delving into her catalogue since February of this year after watching her video for “You Need To Calm Down”. Seeing how she advocates for the LGBTQ really warmed my heart- I cried when I first saw it even tho it's not necessarily a tear jerker! As a mom to a transgirl it made me even happier to see someone with this platform saying F U to the naysayers. I then started listening to her on Spotify, just letting it play… I heard the song “I Did Something Bad” where she mentions how narcissists love her (common for empaths) and then she sang “They're burning all the witches even if you aren't one…. So light me up” and I got CHILLS so bad!! I could feel the power she was channeling and was floored! I later learned about the song Willow and her video for that where it looks like a coven of women dancing around the moon—fun fact, this tree is associated with Hecate—Queen of the Witches, goddess of the underworld connected to magic and divination. Witch isn't a bad word- a witch is a woman in her power who can transmute energy and Taylor Swift does just that. From the snakes being thrown her way w the bs drama she had with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, where she turned it around for fuel for her Reputation album, to changing the script on London and her relationship to that city (We recorded this just prior to those shows… Travis Kelce is clearly the Divine Masculine and his performance with Taylor on stage was so symbolic and amazing. If you don't know what I'm talking about, clearly you are NOT a Swiftie, lol. Google it! Night 3 London, June 22). They both really embody the divine feminine and masculine so strongly.  Nothing prepared me tho for when she premiered her performance of “Who's Afraid of Little Old Me” from her new album in Paris back in May. This was an empowered woman, not hiding her rage and playfully playing on people's fears/accusations of her being a witch. I ate that shit up!! Every single time I listen to or watch that song I get chills and my eyes fill with tears. She channels such power and light. Meredith and I speak about sacred rage, how it's necessary to feel in order to heal, we speak on intuition and how it grows after the arrival of our children. We speak about our kids on the spectrum and their heightened sensitivities, and we also touch on the oh so common narcissist and empath connection. I loved my conversation with Meredith, we meandered a bit and I love all the different directions we went in. I hope you enjoy it too!! In 1936, long before the discovery of the Viking settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows, the Royal Ontario Museum made a sensational acquisition: the contents of a Viking grave that prospector Eddy Dodd said he had found on his mining claim east of Lake Nipigon. The relics remained on display for two decades, challenging understandings of when and where Europeans first reached the Americas. In 1956 the discovery was exposed as an unquestionable hoax, tarnishing the reputation of the museum director, Charles Trick Currelly, who had acquired the relics and insisted on their authenticity. In Beardmore: The Viking Hoax That Rewrote History (McGill-Queen's University Press, 2018), Dr. Douglas Hunter reconstructs the notorious hoax and its many players. Beardmore unfolds like a detective story as the author sifts through the voluminous evidence and follows the efforts of two unlikely debunkers, high-school teacher Teddy Elliott and government geologist T.L. Tanton, who find themselves up against Currelly and his scholarly allies. Along the way, the controversy draws in a who's who of international figures in archaeology, Scandinavian studies, and the museum world, including anthropologist Edmund Carpenter, whose mid-1950s crusade against the find's authenticity finally convinced scholars and curators that the grave was a fraud. Shedding light on museum practices and the state of the historical and archaeological professions in the mid-twentieth century, Beardmore offers an unparalleled view inside a major museum scandal to show how power can be exercised across professional networks and hamper efforts to arrive at the truth. I have been asked this question from parents and from colleagues: Is it autism? And this question is more often asked when we are talking about girls. So the conversation today with guest Dr. Megan Beardmore is about autistic girls and about understanding the less obvious presentations of autism.  Many autistic youth feel misunderstood and research shows that being autistic leads to increased risk for a host of mental health issues including anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and others. For many, an accurate diagnosis can be life changing. But it's not enough to uncover a diagnosis. In fact, it's not the goal. The goal is to understand struggles, identify strengths, and provide the individual and their family with appropriate tools, strategies, and support moving forward.  Dr. Megan Beardmore and I have this important conversation about this overlooked population of autistic girls.   Show Notes: [3:06] - Over the past few years, the prevalence of autism has increased. What has contributed to that? [4:40] - The neurodivergent community has also become more vocal about themselves on social media. [5:54] - Girls are often diagnosed later than boys even when they present with the same behaviors. Dr. Beardmore shares some of the things they look for that are less obvious in girls. [7:40] - Generally speaking, females tend to have a little more social savviness that makes them better at masking. [9:12] - Social camouflaging works until it doesn't and internalizing symptoms can be harmful to mental health. [11:04] - Dr. Beardmore describes the common conversations she has when identifying autistic girls and the questions she asks. [13:15] - There is a distinction between self-awareness and understanding the self within a relationship. [14:19] - Oftentimes, autistic individuals, especially girls, are hyper aware of other people's body language and facial expressions. [15:43] - There is a misconception about empathy when it comes to autistic individuals. They aren't without empathy, but rather that they don't know what to do with it. [18:57] - Rigidity is often a struggle for autistic individuals but in general, girls internalize this stress while boys tend to outwardly show their emotions. [21:11] - Regardless of gender, those with high intellectual functioning are more likely to fly under the radar and be overlooked. [23:01] - Internalizing symptoms are common in girls and create a delay in seeking help and a diagnosis. [25:49] - The purpose of an assessment isn't to find a diagnosis. She later worked in a nonpublic, multidisciplinary school where she developed and implemented a social skills program for students with social-communication and behavioral challenges. Currently, Dr. Beardmore works at Spectrum Psych Los Angeles splitting her time between conducting psychological evaluations and providing outpatient therapy. Her focus in assessment tends to target psychoeducational, social-emotional, and autism-specific referrals. After that, he spent four years learning his trade as an apprentice on a square-rigged sailing ship. He then trained to be an officer, working his way up through the ranks. The Okrants live in Danelle's hometown of Beardmore, a community in Northern Ontario of 250 people, two hours north of Thunder Bay. Tombill Mines is involved in mineral exploration, primarily gold and has 74 royalty-free claims; of which 60 are owned and patented. Tombill Mines owns various mineral exploration and past-producing gold mines and claims in the Geraldton Camp and Beardmore region, Ontario. Tombill Mines went public in mid December 2020 which raised $6.5M.The Geraldton Gold Camp is about 275km north on the TransCanada highway from Thunder Bay which is a great setting for a mining company with existing infrastructure, a highway town with 4000 people and an airport. The camp is accessible year-round via the TransCanada Highway, which splits the Tombill Main Group property in two.Tombill was founded in 1935 by Tom and Bill Johnson with backing from Newmont. Tombill had two past mines in production which yielded 3Moz gold between the 1930s-60s. The subsequent gold price in the 1960s did not facilitate further mine expansion at that time.In 2008 the neighbour to Tombill who was at the time Premier Gold created the Greenstone property with their prime asset the Hard Rock resource which is directly adjacent to the Tombill site. From 2008-16 the company carried out a lot of drilling and resource work and proved a 6M oz resource at Hard Rock of which 50% was bought by Centerra in 2016 for approximately $200M plus a commitment of $200M for further work. The Hard Rock resource is now an 11.5Moz resource and in December 2020 was sold to Equinox and Orion who are now moving the resource towards a full mining operation.Tombill has been owned by the family for 40 years and now as a consequence of the Hard Rock success, Tombill are moving forward and have assembled a very experienced technical team to progress the resource further. The majority of surface exploration at Tombill Mines was conducted in the 1930s and 1940s and the last diamond drill-hole until recently was conducted in 1950.Tombill Mines has commenced an exploration program in Q1/2021, including diamond drilling, non-drilling geological support, and surface exploration. They have drilled 7000m to date with plans to drill up to 16000m. They have seen some very promising numbers and are expecting drill results back very shortly which will be published as news releases from the company as soon as possible.

Along the way, the controversy draws in a who’s who of international figures in archaeology, Scandinavian studies, and the museum world, including anthropologist Edmund Carpenter, whose mid-1950s crusade against the find’s authenticity finally convinced scholars and curators that the grave was a fraud. Shedding light on museum practices and the state of the historical and archaeological professions in the mid-twentieth century, Beardmore offers an unparalleled view inside a major museum scandal to show how power can be exercised across professional networks and hamper efforts to arrive at the truth.
