Support the show

Today, we are diving in to the 2023 Oscar winning film by Yorgos Lanthimos film "Poor Things." This one's a wild ride! Beyond the beautiful award winning costuming, stunning sets, and all-star cast including Oscar winner Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe and Ramy Youssef, this film is rich with psychological content for us to analyze. We focus on using Bella Baxter's development to discuss Erik Erikson's theory of personality development using eight psychosocial stages and discuss how we see these stages unfold in the film. We also explore our feelings about the (surprising to us!) amount of nudity and the film's depiction of the role of female sexual pleasure. Episode 37 - Spoiler Review: Poor Things (2023) ⚠️ Warning: As said in this episode, "It's not a family-friendly movie. It's not going to be a family-friendly podcast episode." Listener/Viewer Discretion Advised: This episode contains explicit discussions about adult themes and strong language as we delve into the movie 'Poor Things.' Every year, I go into my Oscar predictions with shaky confidence at best. However, for the 96th Academy Awards for movies from 2023, there was one award for which I had absolute confidence: Best Actress. As soon as I finished watching "Poor Things," there was no doubt in my mind that Stone's performance would not be topped. Stone created a once-in-a-career experience with her portrayal of Bella Baxter in this movie. On today's episode, I'm joined by my cousin Roya Tavakolian. We had a lot to talk about with this one-of-a-kind movie. From Emma Stone living out what can certainly be imagined as any actor's dream role, to Yorgos Lanthimos navigating us through his world that we see through the eyes of the main character, Bella Baxter. We laugh and joke about parts of this movie, like how Mark Ruffalo is great in his villain (kind of a villain? Not really a villain?) role, and how the movie brilliantly tackles so many themes and ideas in ways that are sometimes subtle and at other times very much in your face. "Poor Things" is yet another reason why I need to remind myself not to start my "top 10 favorite movies of the year" list too early. It is a standout 2023 movie. It is streaming now on Hulu in the US and is also available for rent and purchase. I can't wait to see more from Lanthimos and Stone soon. Enjoy the movie! This is a public episode. This comedy/drama/fantasy film is something special. A feast for the eyes and an incredibly darkly comical tale of a woman brought back to life and given a second chance. Think FRANKENSTEIN, FRANKENHOOKER, FREAKY FRIDAY, and some other period piece that gives you a general idea that this is set some-time-when with a sprinkling of familiarity. With an award-winning performance from it's central lead, Emma Stone and backed up by Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, and a scene stealing comedy great performance from Mark Ruffalo, this has to be seen to be experienced! Don't let us hold you up! In this show we are looking at the highly divisive film that has swept through the Oscars like dose of salts! From the mind of Yorgos Lanthimos, and based on the novel by Alasdair Gray, Poor Things proclaims itself to be a journey of growth and exploration for Bella Baxter, the nymphomaniacal Frankenstein's creature of this fantastical film. Or is it a film about the sexual abuse of a minor and the systematic reduction of her autonomy? Did we like it or loathe it? Or is it something beyond either feeling? Get watching folks. it's not an easy one to explain. "Brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist, a young woman runs off with a lawyer on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, she grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation." https://youtu.be/sdB2WP0nHNA TPToA would like to invite your child-like brains and adult bodies to join in with the conversation on the Twitch stream, each week, (usually on Tuesday night at 7:30pm AEST). Poor Things is a brilliantly imaginative, comedic and visually stunning film about Bella Baxter, a young woman who is brought back to life by mad scientist Godwin Baxter. She experiences a personal and sexual awakening as she travels the world, discovering what it means to be a confident woman free of societal constraints. Director Yorgos Lanthimos and cinematographer Robbie Ryan had previously worked together on The Favourite. They wanted to push the boundaries of how Poor Things looked in every possible way. “He's so prolific with ideas that you go, 'Okay, you want to try that? Okay, let's try that!' And, he gives me a lot of challenges that I go off and find a lens that he's trying to talk about,” says Robbie. Robbie shot Poor Things in a variety of different formats and with a range of unusual lenses. The film is a period piece, so he and Lanthimos decided to use the 1:6:6 aspect ratio, which is closer in composition to portraiture. They also chose to shoot entirely on film, using KODAK 35mm black and white, color negative and Ektachrome Reversal film stocks. For Bella's reanimation sequence, Robbie used a Vista Vision camera, which is a special widescreen format from the 1950's. The 35mm film stock is turned on its side, so that the picture is ultra-widescreen and high resolution. The film is energized with purposefully intrusive cinematography, lenses and zooms. Robbie selected a Petzval lens once used on old projectors. He also placed a 4mm lens, made for 16mm cameras, onto a 35mm camera, to create an extreme fish-eye, vignetted frame. “Yorgos wanted even wider fish eye lenses that created a vignette, with a dreamy focus bokeh on it. We wanted another era feeling to it, with a painterly quality to it, and to have a lot of character. You're jumping between so many different lens choices that would, they would definitely jar, but that's what the attempt is- to jar the audience.” On set, Lanthimos prefers to be able to use all 360 degrees of the entire space. He also didn't want any lights on the set, so it had to be completely built and lit with every direction shootable. It was more freeing for the actors and for the camera, but it did present a challenge for shooting on film, which needs a lot more light to make images. Robbie had to use many practical lights throughout the set, with sky lighting in the ceiling, especially for the outdoor scenes. Robbie is very proud of Poor Things, and he thinks it's funny and more accessible than some of Lanthimos' other work. “The universe that Yorgos has created is the one you want to enjoy and get into with this film,” he says. Today on the show – a movie in which Emma Stone attempts to punch a baby, by a playwright and screenwriter whose stories never fail to pack a punch. Yes, Tony McNamara is here, talking all things Poor Things, his latest collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos. Having previously worked together on the ten-time Oscar-nominated historical comedy The Favourite in 2018, this awards-tipped odyssey is a Frankensteinian creation as beguiling and impossible to pin down as its protagonist, Bella Baxter. It's part coming-of-age comedy, part sexual conquest and part travelogue through an eye-popping steampunk planet both like and unlike our own. You might also classify it as a father-daughter drama – except here, the father is a mad scientist whose home is a cornucopia of unholy experiments, his daughter, played by Emma Stone, just one of them.Stone is astounding as Bella, a reanimated dead woman, whose body, dragged from the Thames, has had life breathed into it once more. The horny journey of self-discovery that the character goes on from there, adapted from a 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray, comments on our culture's (male-driven) obsession with control, explains Tony in our conversation. It's a riveting chat with a storyteller whose other screen credits include creating the TV show The Great, loosely based on Empress Catherine the Great of Russia's rise to power in 18th century Saint Petersburg and 2021's Cruella. Listen out for insights on the changes made to Gray's novel, the scene that Yorgos and Tony sadly had to cut for time, the idea of sex as a liberating force for the film's main character and what each of the new lands Bella visits are meant to bring out of her evolving character. Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Director: Yorgos Lanthimos Writers: Tony McNamara, Alasdair Gray Starring: Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef Runtime:  2 Hour 21 Minutes Synopsis: The incredible tale about the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter; a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist, Dr. Godwin Baxter. Kriss, Ro & Brandon discuss and review the film Poor Things. There's a lot to really enjoy about this film, chief among them is Emma Stone once again showing what an outstanding actress and performer she is. It's not a slight to the other performers in this film to say that Emma Stone carries this film because the story truly revolves around her character, Bella Baxter. But what Emma Stone is asked to do and is able to do is what makes this film. Not too many actresses could have pulled this off and she does it in a brilliant way. This film isn't perfect but is definitely a great modern telling of the story of Frankenstein (or rather the aftermath of the Frankenstein story) that is worth checking out.  Like what you hear? This week, the panel is joined by Slate writer and senior editor Sam Adams to dissect Poor Things, director Yorgos Lanthimos' horny, steampunk Frankenstein tale about Bella Baxter (played by Emma Stone), a pregnant woman who commits suicide then is brought back to life by a brilliant scientist (Willem Dafoe), with an eccentric caveat: She now has the brain of her unborn fetus. Then, the three remember Norman Lear, the late television pioneer and American icon who died at the age of 101 and who was responsible for ushering in a new era of character-driven, comedic, topical, and morally serious TV with hit sitcoms like All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Maude, and One Day at a Time. Finally, they are joined by Slate's books and culture columnist, Laura Miller, who shares her top ten books of the year, and along with Dana, discusses the joys and challenges of year-end listmaking.  In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel reunites with Sam Adams to spoil Poor Things, detailing what is arguably the film's weakest portion: the final ten minutes.  We're also accepting submissions to our yearly call-in show, where Dana, Julia, and Stephen answer questions from Culture Gabfest listeners. Get in touch! Submit a question by calling (260) 337-8260 or emailing us at culturefest@slate.com. The deadline to submit is Wednesday, December 13.  Outro music: “The Red Light Special” by Matt Large Endorsements: Dana: It's clear that Norman Lear was working in the heyday of television title sequences. And although Dana may have been born a bit late to catch All in the Family in real time, what she remembers are the theme songs. So, go on YouTube and call yourself up some of the most indelible introductory sequences (All in the Family, Good Times, One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons, etc.) and you'll have a good time.  Julia: An endorsement that doubles as a one-item gift guide. If you would like to give someone a fancy, overpriced, but delicious-smelling body wash, Julia has found the best one: NO Green by Corpus, a luxurious plant-based cleanser with notes of bergamot, pink lemon, orange blossom, and cardamom. Snap it up if you have some last-minute gifts to buy.  Steve: A quote by Søren Kierkegaard, gifted to Stephen by his eldest daughter: “Should philosophy, among its other conceits, imagine that someone might actually want to follow its precepts in practice, a curious comedy would emerge.” (Fear and Trembling, 1843.)  Podcast production by Cameron Drews. Editor - Yorgos Mavropsaridis POOR THINGS editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis was already an established editor when he first started collaborating with a young director named Yorgos Lanthimos.  At that point Lanthimos was only known for doing commercials, but by their third feature together, 2009's DOGTOOTH, the pair began to be recognized as a formidable storytelling team.  Over a decade later, they would finally take on what Yorgos Mavropsaridis considers their first true studio film, Searchlight Pictures' POOR THINGS. POOR THINGS tells the story of a young woman, Bella Baxter, who was brought back to life by her guardian, the scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter.  Initially naïve, Bella was eager to learn about the world around her, albeit under Baxter's protection.  Wanting to see more, she ran off with Duncan Wedderburn, a slick and debauched lawyer, and traveled across continents.  Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella demanded equality and liberation. Yorgos Mavropsaridis Yorgos Mavropsaridis is most known for his work with POOR THINGS director, Yorgos Lanthimos, including Dogtooth (2009), The Lobster (2015) and The Favourite (2018), for which Yorgos received an Oscar nomination and an ACE Eddie award.
