I was approached by a PR firm to put Ben Bell on the show. Certainly seemed like an interesting thought. Afterall, domestic Sake is a rarity and one from the heart of Little Tokyo, Arkansas! (that was a little tongue-in-cheek humour). There were so many questions and so little time. Some stories just require more questions and who wouldn't want to know how in the H-E double hockey sticks did he fall into making Sake in Arkansas. Ben Bell might be the only person you'll ever meet whose journey to sake mastery began not in Tokyo, but in Hot Springs, Arkansas—and includes a failed job interview conducted entirely in Japanese. You'll be entertained, surprised, and utterly engrossed as you discover how this Arkansas native went from stocking wine shelves in Little Rock to apprenticing at world-class sake breweries in Japan, all the while learning a language many would consider impossible to master. In this episode, Paul Kalemkiarian draws out the remarkable story of how Ben's early fascination with wine sparked a lifelong pursuit of drinkable discovery, culminating with the founding of Origami Sake right in America's rice heartland. You'll learn how technique, not terroir, is the soul of sake—why craft and style choices shape every bottle more than the field the rice grew in. Ben breaks down sake's renaissance in America: from hot, mass-market pours at sushi joints to the nuanced, premium sakes you should really be tasting chilled, not warmed. You'll hear what truly sets sake apart, why it defies the rules of wine, and how its food-pairing versatility can elevate everything from Cajun shrimp and grits to Arkansas barbecue. Want tips on how to actually drink and serve sake? Ben's got you covered, and he'll tell you why a wine glass in your kitchen may be the best tool for enjoying the craft. Most of all, you'll realize that America's next great beverage story might just be unfolding far from the coasts, where passion meets persistence and the art of sake is rewritten, one bold, Arkansas-brewed batch at a time. ✅ Ever wondered how top-tier sake is being crafted in… Arkansas? ✅ Origami Sake co-founder Ben Bell joins host Paul Kalemkiarian on Wine Talks for a wild deep dive into the rise of American sake and his journey from wine geek to sake master. ✅ From mastering Japanese in rural Japan to winning international gold medals—all from Hot Springs, Arkansas—Ben shares what it really takes to create world-class sake outside of Japan, why rice matters, and how sake breaks the rules for pairing with food. ✅ Takeaway: If you think sake is just for sushi night, think again. This episode will change how you see (and drink) sake—grab a glass and tune in now!

An unrepentant social media manager has defended sharing private photographs of Gore mayor Ben Bell amid accusations of dirty politics. Natasha Chadwick, who was paid $9200 by incumbent mayor Tracy Hicks to run his social media as part of his $14,000 campaign, shared the photos of Bell with media outlets after the election, saying “what he (Bell) does socially is absolutely the people's business”. Hicks yesterday said Chadwick approached him during his campaign about using the photos but he declined saying it was not his style. However, he stood by Chadwick, who says she waited until after the election before sharing the pictures with media, calling her an “absolute professional” who was a pleasure to work with. Yesterday, RNZ reported on allegations of dirty politics emerging from the mayoral race and rumours about Bell's sexuality. Bell said he had heard rumours about his sexuality toward the end of his campaign, but did not know where they had come from and could not say for sure whether it was a case of “dirty tactics” from Chadwick. “Things get heated during a campaign, so that's politics at the end of the day,” Bell said. Either way, it was “water off a duck's back”. “It didn't matter to me and the photo that she's alleged to have ... is on my Instagram. “I didn't take it down. I have no intention of taking it down. “People like to think what they like to think. “I'm a public figure at the end of the day, so my life is pretty public these days,” he said. He made his Instagram account private before his campaign to protect his friends' privacy, he said. In an email to councillor Bret Highsted, released to the Otago Daily Times, Bell addressed the issue, saying “unless you get directly from me, it's simply rumours”. Highsted replied saying he was not aware of any “explicit” photos of Bell being circulated. “I have seen a relatively harmless photo of you being kissed on the cheek at what looks like a festival. “My response ... is the next generation would think nothing of it,” Highsted said. Chadwick, who lives in Tapanui, said she did not share the photos or rumours during the campaign, although she had tried to get the media to pick up on them after her contract with Hicks had ended. She was unrepentant about spreading the photos. “To me, if you're going to run in a public office and you're going to be in a public space I think you need to present authentically,” she said. “If he wasn't ashamed of anything he did, why did he go and hide all of that stuff? That was my question.” Bell's response is that he made his Instagram account private before his campaign to protect his friends' privacy. Former Gore Mayor Tracy Hicks. Photo / Supplied Chadwick had suggested Hicks use the posts during the campaign. “I thought it could have been an advantage, I'm not going to lie, but Tracy was not interested in playing that role and he would have been mortified if I had done anything about it during the campaign,” Chadwick said. After the election was over and her contract was up and she could speak in her own capacity, she raised the posts with several media outlets, including the Otago Daily Times. Hicks said he had been surprised when Chadwick brought up the pictures but he had not wanted to get into that type of campaigning. “As far as I'm aware, they weren't used,” Hicks said of the pictures. While some people clearly knew about the rumours, they were never raised in a public way as far as he was aware. He did not know who was spreading them. “Some people see that as fair game, but I'm afraid it's not in my gamebook,” Hicks said. He said he was “not really” aware of her efforts to bring attention to the posts after the campaign. Glenys Dickson said she was aware of the rumours during Bell's campaign, but thought a person's sexual preference had no relevance to being mayor and paid no attention to it. “He's elected to do a job and I think he's doing a good job,” Dickson said. Cr Joe Stringer, who ran with Bell on the Team Hokonui ticket, said he knew about the rumour but did not think councillors were behind it. “I don't think any of the councillors would've done anything like that ... I think it started in the general public,” he said.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I have a hero of the week this week. In the wash up from the local body elections, and although very excited about the country's newest and youngest Mayor 23-year-old Ben Bell of Gore, which is quite an achievement - my bouquet goes to Rotorua's new Mayor Tania Tapsell.  Absolute go-getter, smart, considered, hardworking and really passionate about her city. She's the sort of Mayor you feel happy for, irrespective of any political direction, just because they feel like they've earned it.  They deserve to be where they are, they're in it for the right reasons. Not platitudes and empty words, but for the real and right reasons.  She's gone hard all along on emergency housing and it speaks volumes she got voted in because that's exactly what the people of Rotorua are focused on right now.  It was a travesty of former Mayor and Labour stalwart Steve Chadwick to allow emergency housing to get so bad in Rotorua. She's left an absolute headache and a nightmare for Tapsell to try to undo.  But within her first week in the job she's already fired a salvo at the Government over its demands for landlords to bring houses up to healthy homes standards, while allowing vulnerable families to stay in unhealthy and sometimes unsafe emergency motels.  So it's one rule for us and one for the Government it seems. All this at a huge cost to the taxpayer, as we know.  Well sadly the Minister Carmel Sepuloni didn't know exactly. When asked in an interview what it's costing the taxpayer, she said “a lot”. Which isn't that helpful. It's also disturbing she doesn't know that figure off the top of her head instantly, but that's what's to be expected from a Government obsessed with spending other people's money and not caring too much about having any accountability for it. The most disturbing thing Sepuloni does is defend the emergency housing. How can anyone standing on what used to be Golden Mile and is now derogatorily referred to as MSD strip, look at that, and defend it?  When challenged on the shocking condition and accommodation standards of some of these motels that the Ggovernment's funding, Sepuloni said basically it's not their problem.  She pushed it back on council and said it's a council issue, those regulations happen at council level. So let's get this straight - the Government handed the city of Rotorua this problem, and it is a problem, it's a big undeniable shambles of a problem, they then made the problem worse over a sustained period of years and then they sit back and go, ‘oh now that's your problem Rotorua'.  They're going to ‘have conversations' with Iwi and council apparently. And I'm just so glad for Rotorua that the person they'll be having those ‘conversations' with, is Tania Tapsell.  I have a feeling it will be a darn sight tougher for the Government than dealing with Steve Chadwick.  So I wish Tania well, she's agitating for action on this – among other things, within her first hundred days in office, and I hope she continues to get the momentum and drive she's going to need for this battle.  Not just on the emergency motels but all the crime associated with them and with getting back Rotorua's long held reputation as the fantastic tourist attraction it is.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Compost worms and earth worms are the unsung heroes of the composting world and the ecological world - generally. Aristotle called them the intestines of the soil, and Charles Darwin's last book was dedicated to covering the role of earthworm on our planet. Even in his day he was aware that many cultures in the 19th century were very conscious of the role that earthworms played in the creation of high quality soil and fertility. When we understand the complexity and the relationships within the web of life and when we take the time to understand the grandeur in a fork full of compost, we realise that trillions of microflora, spiralling DNA, decaying leaf matter plus minerals and life force can be enabled to journey up through a young tree, to eventually manifest a juicy fresh golden peach in our hands - as undeniable ripe-full fruition. From dark dirt of the earth to fleshy, succulence and juicy sweetness - the transmutation of minerals into food, nobly assisted by the humble earth worm. Ben started off young, with grandparents having incredible gardens and his grandmother having bees so they were constantly embedding themselves in high quality food and the enthusiasm of growing food for themselves and that his parents were also into sustainability. So his upbringing was very focused on growing food by organic means in which he terms his Kaupapa - respect for growing food and eating it being always present.
