In 2012, Hollywood actor Johnny Lewis fell to his death from the roof of a home in Los Angeles. It happened just moments after he beat and strangled his landlady, 81-year-old Catherine Davis, to death. Lewis, who was 28 at the time of his death, fought two men after killing the landlady, before racing up to the roof of Davis' home and falling/jumping to his death. How does someone who seemingly had it all, lose everything in just a few moments? *This episode intro includes a cover of "Motorcycle" by Colter Wall     This weeks sponsor, Magic Mind : www.magicmind.com/tcgjan  Check out our other shows!: Cryptic Soup w/ Thena & Kylee   Strange & Unexplained   True Crime Guys YouTube   EVERYTHING TRUE CRIME GUYS:   https://linktr.ee/Truecrimeguysproductions   True Crime Guys Music: True Crime Guys Music on Spotify   OhMyGaia.com Code: Creepvan     Patreon.com/truecrimeguys Patreon.com/sandupodcast Merch: truecrimeguys.threadless.com   Sources:   The horrifying true story of Katy Perry's ex   The Shocking Death and Horrific Crimes of Johnny Lewis | Sons of Anarchy Star & Katy Perry's Ex   https://www.investigationdiscovery.com/crimefeed/id-shows/death-by-fame/sons-of-anarchy-star-fell-to-his-death-after-murdering-his-landlady   https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2449098/Johnny-Lewis-DID-father-child-Sons-Of-Anarchy-star-Diane-Gaeta.html   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Lewis   https://allthatsinteresting.com/johnny-lewis

Before the murders of Catherine Davis, Cindy Heller, Angela Ewert, and Sarah Kashka, all of whose cases were connected in some way to Fort Worth's west and southwest sides, a series of murders took place that haunted the victims' families and perhaps only inconvenienced the police department. Sylvia Hynes, Lorane Larkin, Margaret Maxwell, Vicky Chisolm, Jacquelyn Jones, Karen Strong, Angela Jones, and Sandra Bush, among others, were all slain within a three-year period beginning in the summer of 1980. Unlike the mid-1980s cases, however, these early-80s murders saw virtually no help from the press and although some of the crimes shared similarities, a task force was never formed to help solve them.If you have any information about the cases discussed this episode – Sandra Bush, Sylvia Hynes, Lorane Larkin, Margaret Maxwell, Vicky Chisolm, Jacquelyn Jones, Karen Strong, or Angela Jones – please contact the Fort Worth Cold Case Unit at 817-392-4307 or 817-392-4308.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. After the disappearances of Catherine Davis, Cindy Heller, and Angela Ewert, and the murder of Sarah Kashka, special homicide task force was created to investigate those crimes specifically. However, they were far from the only unsolved cases that had police stumped. Just days before Cindy Heller went missing, Twenty-nine-year-old middle school teacher Marilyn Hartman was brutally murdered in her home in what, on the surface, seemed like a burglary gone wrong. Not six weeks later, thirty-two-year-old middle school teacher Kathryn Jackson was killed in her apartment in what can only be described as a depraved and savage act of violence. In between those two crimes, a Colleyville woman named Judy Herron was also killed in her home. Similarities between these crimes had Fort Worth police detectives scrambling to make sense of them. Are they related? If you have any information about the murders of Marilyn Hartman or Kathryn Jackson, please call the Fort Worth Police Cold Case Unit at (817) 392-4307.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. In early December 1984, not long after the disappearances of 23-year-olds Catherine Davis and Cindy Heller, 21-year-old Angela Ewert spent an evening getting sized for an engagement ring. After leaving her fiance's house to head to her home in west Arlington, Angela stopped for gas at a southwest Fort Worth 7-Eleven convenience store. She was never seen alive again. The following day, her father found her maroon, 1984 Mercury Topaz abandoned on the 300 block of Southeast Interstate Loop 820. A tire had been changed, but there were no obvious signs of violence. After several large-scale searches over the next couple of years, the Ewert Family, and police, continually came up empty handed. Nearly nine years later, the answer to one question was finally answered: where was she?If you have any information about the murder of Angela Leigh Ewert, please call the Fort Worth Police Cold Case Unit at (817) 392-4307.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X.Search @gonecoldpodcast at all or just click linknbio.com/gonecoldpodcast Sources: The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, The Dallas Morning News, The Austin American Statesman, digital.library.unt.edu, and texashistory.unt.edu #JusticeForAngelaEwert #FortWorth #FWT #Texas #TX #TrueCrime #TexasTrueCrime #TrueCrimePodcast #Podcast #Unsolved #GoneCold #GoneColdPodcast #UnsolvedMysteries #TrueCrime #Homicide #UnsolvedMurder #ColdCase #CrimeStories #PodcastRecommendations #SerialKiller #TrueCrimeCommunity #CrimeJunkie #MysteryPodcast #TrueCrimeObsessed #CrimeDocs #InvestigationDiscovery #PodcastAddict #TrueCrimeFan #CriminalJustice #ForensicFiles #TrueCrimeAddict #TrueCrimeLovers #CrimeScene #PodcastLifeBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/gone-cold-texas-true-crime--3203003/support.

Less than a month after the disappearance of Catherine Davis, another 23-year-old woman vanished without a trace. In late October 1984, Cindy Heller stopped to help a stranded motorist. As genuinely friendly and caring as a person can get, she lived up to the term “Good Samaritan” and offered to deliver a note to the motorist's friends after spending two hours waiting with her. The note was delivered, but Cindy disappeared. More than two months later, her decomposed body was found on the campus of Texas Christian University. If you have any information about the murder of Cindy Heller, please call the Fort Worth Police Cold Case Unit at (817) 392-4307.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. Catherine Davis came to Texas in 1979 from Oxford, Mississippi. Chasing a career in modeling and fashion, she first landed in Dallas but followed a boy to Fort Worth in 1982. In late September 1984, the twenty-three-year-old left her apartment with someone and forty-five minutes later, it was engulfed in flames. Catherine wasn't inside. But she'd never be seen alive again, nonetheless. By December, her disappearance became part of a multi-case investigation by the FWPD that, at first, involved two other missing women. When Catherine's remains were finally recovered, it was an obvious homicide. The investigation would continue to add victims and is known today colloquially as “the ‘80s Murders.”If you have any information about the murder of Catherine Lee Davis, please call the Fort Worth Police Cold Case Unit at (817) 392-4307.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. On 23 March 1962, a prototype of the first cockpit flight recorder, the black box, was tested in Australia. In the early 1950s, fuel scientist David Warren, who worked in the Australian government's aeronautical research laboratories, attended a talk about the reasons for a recent plane crash. David thought that if only he could speak to a survivor, he'd have a much better idea of what caused the crash and could prevent future ones. This led him to develop a recorder that would collect vital information of the last few hours before a plane goes down. Today the modern equivalent of the black box is compulsory equipment on passenger planes all over the world. In 2015, David's children, Jenny and Peter Warren, and a former colleague, Bill Schofield, spoke with Catherine Davis about how his idea changed air travel forever. And I'm Dr. Margaret Rutherford. At Self-Work, we'll discuss psychological and emotional issues common in today's world and what to do about them. I'm Dr. Margaret and SelfWork is a podcast dedicated to you taking just a few minutes today for your own selfwork. Hello and welcome or welcome back to SelfWork. I'm Dr. Margaret Rutherford. I'm a clinical psychologist and about seven years ago now, or almost seven years ago, I decided to extend the walls of my practice to those of you who might already be very interested in psychological issues or have sought therapy for yourself, to those of you who've just been figuring out some sort of problem or issue and you want some advice, and to a third group, to those of you who might be just a little more skeptical about mental health treatment and what you could do to help yourself with depression or anxiety, I'm glad for all of you to be here. I wanna remind you that my TEDx talk is out and I will have the link for it in the show notes. I'm very excited as I record this. We're closing in on 9,000 views and it's only been out for four or five days, so I'm so pleased that the message is getting out and you're part of that. So if you've already listened or viewed, actually thank you for that. You can let me know by commenting. And for those of you who want to, it's about a 15 minute video on YouTube. You could also just go to YouTube and put in Dr. Margaret Rutherford and TEDx and it'll come up. So today we're gonna be talking about having fun. Increasingly, I've noticed a big trend in how people who see me are describing having fun and so much of that time what they're doing is scrolling through TikTok or Instagram, Reddit or Quora or any online communications app. Even people who are actively struggling with depression will tell me the major way they distract themselves is through focusing on what they can find on their screens. This, despite all kinds of studies showing that the more you interact or are on your phone, the more depressed you can become. I have a cell phone, which I use quite a lot, and I have fun on some of the apps I have. I get it. Yet.just this morning when my husband and I went out to a local diner for breakfast, we saw a couple. And then they weren't young, but they were older, both with one hand holding their fork with their food, while with the other hand ,they were scrolling through their phones. No conversation, no sharing, and they were definitely not having fun together. So today I'm not advocating that anyone get rid of their phone, but I do think that a way out of depression is finding tiny bits of fun. aAnd I found a fun expert, Catherine Davis, whose Ted Talk will be in your show notes. She's a science journalist and has written a couple of very successful books and she's really fun to listen to. We'll talk about her work and research and use it to wonder together how you might be experiencing depression or anxiety and still be able to find fun. It's also important to be aware that having fun itself is a way out of depression, even though that very statement may seem counterintuitive. How can you have fun if you're depressed? We'll focus on that and of course, what other things you can do about in this episode of SelfWork. On a much different note, the voicemail today is from a woman who told her husband she was leaving him due to his narcissistic behaviors over 40 years. And then he fell, broke his back, and required extensive hospitalization and has become someone who needs ongoing care for dementia that will only worsen over time. I'll try my best to answer her question first. Let's hear about AG1's offer in 2023 for SelfWork listeners. Our next partner is AG one, the daily foundational nutrition supplement that supports whole body health. I drink it literally every day. I gave AG one a try because I wanted a single solution that supports my entire body and covers my nutritional bases every day. I wanted better gut health, a boost in energy immune system support. I take it in the morning before starting my day and I make sure and leave it out for my husband because he tends to forget. I love knowing that I'm starting my day so incredibly well and I wouldn't change a thing because it's really helped me the last two or three years I've taken it. And here's a fact, since 2010, they've improved their formula 52 times in the pursuit of making this nutrition supplement possible and the best it can be. So if you wanna take ownership of your health, it starts with ag one. Try ag one and get a free one year supply of vitamin D and five free Ag one travel packs with your first purchase. Go to drink ag one.com/selfwork and that's a new link. Drink ag one.com/selfwork. Check it out. People ask me all the time, “How do you do what you do and not get down or depressed yourself?” My first answer is usually because I see so much courage and fight, although it can be hard to hear about the abuse that we humans and especially parents can force onto children. But I also have fun. I laugh all day long with my patients about various and sundry things and I can see a little bit of light in their eyes when they catch themselves enjoying a laugh or recognizing some amusing irony or another in their own lives. So I wondered what I might find in research about having fun and I found Catherine Price. I found a reference to her first in an article by Laurie Santos about her work at Yale where she teaches an extremely popular course on happiness, and I'm gonna have that link in your show notes as well. It's a great article. So she quotes Catherine Price. So I went to go look her up and I think her work's refreshing and more importantly, kind of fun to think about. First, who is Catherine Price? Well, here's her byline. With a background in science journalism and an unshakable curiosity about the world. Catherine Price helps people question their assumptions, make positive changes in their lives, and see mundane things like phones and vitamins in a different more philosophical light. She's also the author of How to Break Up with Your Phone, which is a huge bestseller and I'll have that link for you. So that description intrigued me. I like to think of myself as a very curious person and I think that curiosity helps me to stay energetic and I love to laugh. So, I was more than interested in what Catherine had to say. I watched her Ted Talk and frankly it was funny, she'd reached out internationally and asked people what fun was to them. She got some hilarious answers like roast a Turkey, which I guess could be fun. But what she mostly noted was that many of the answers, in fact most of the answers described doing something, I have fun when I cook, or fishing is fun, or watching old movies is fun. But she believes fun is a feeling, not necessarily an activity. And she goes on to talk about three kinds of fun: fake fun, true fun and activities that bring a sense of fun things that are enjoyable, like taking a bath or talking with a friend. So let's first talk about fake fun. And this resonated so much with what I hear from the TikTok or Instagram addicted people I see as clients. These folks will say to me that they believe scrolling is fun until they realize that it's grown to be addictive. It becomes as Catherine Price calls it, a passive compulsion and one where social comparison happens in a negative direction, which isn't fun at all. In fact, this kind of scrolling only increases self-doubt and leads to self-loathing because of what the scroller can then chastise themselves about wasted time being late because you were staring at your screen literally having to have a hit of TikTok before you do anything on your plan for the day, like waking up and smoking, you gotta have your hit of TikTok. I might add that other addictive behaviors also belong here. Drinking can start out as feeling fun. For example, the alcohol breaks down whatever anxiety you might have about being social so you can have fun. Not so fun is what can happen afterward or the next day when you have little to no energy because you're so hung over. But then the fun can start again when you start drinking right, and this cycle of supposed fun becomes an addiction. This kind of fun sounds to me coming from a therapeutic perspective like distraction, like not wanting to or even fearing looking at yourself or your life honestly or procrastinating what may be a hard thing to do and doing an easy thing in instead, while also creating anxiety that will be waiting for you when your fun is over. So what is real fun or true fun as Catherine calls it? Before we get to that info, here's a word from Better help for 2023, I recently heard a fascinating reframe for the idea of asking for help. Maybe you view asking for help as something someone does who's falling apart or who isn't strong. So consider this. What if asking for help means that you won't let anything get in your way of solving an issue, finding out an answer or discovering a better direction? Asking for help is much more about your determination to recognize what needs your attention or what is getting in your way of having the life you want better help. Today I'm presenting the work of Catherine Davis, whom I've never met, but watched her Ted talk as well as an interview with her and was very impressed with how she talked about and defined fun. She says it has three components, flow, playfulness, and connection. She showed a Venn diagram, which is just circles in this case, and each facet  - flow, playfulness and connection  - are their own circle, but those three circles intersect in the middle. So there's a circle where all three were present and that constitutes real fun. And while I'm gonna talk about these three components, I'm also going to talk about how depression and anxiety can make it harder to create these but not impossible. First, let's take playfulness. Another word for this might be lightheartedness, not taking things so seriously, being spontaneous. She makes the point that when the world is so full of war and hunger and climate change, it can seem uncaring or even self-centered or selfish to have fun. It made me think of the characters of Winnie the Pooh. There's Owl, Rabbit, Kanga, R00, Winnie, Piglet, Tigger, Christopher Robin and Eeyore I found an article about each character's relatability. Which character do you think wins that relatability contest? It might surprise you. It's not the fun loving Tigger or the adventuresome Roo. It's Eeyore, the sad melancholy, the “if something bad happens, it'll be to me” character . In this series- created almost a hundred years ago - the writers were trying to make each of these characters lovable with their strengths showing as well as their vulnerabilities. So why am I bringing this up? Because even Eeyore is capable of having fun. He has a malformed tale but says things like I”I's not much of a tale, but I'm sort of attached to it.” , What is Eeyore doing? Not to overanalyze poor Eeyore, but it seems as if he can see that his perspective is gloomy and depressing, but can also use a tiny bit of energy to care, to see things more positively, dare I say, to have fun. Seeing the funny or the fun and things is more difficult obviously when you're depressed, yes. But if you challenge yourself to learn something new, to stay curious about how to do something, you are building steps to lift your depression or to soothe your anxiety. If you know that being around someone's a downer where being around someone else lifts your spirits, who are you going to choose to go to lunch with? Hopefully the second. Instead of doing the same things every day, which may become more of a trap for your depression rather than a way out, think of something that makes you smile. What if you had fun doing before? I can already hear someone listening to this and who's depressed saying, “Well, it wouldn't be fun now. Hell, I don't even have the energy to try my answer to that.” Depression is hard to fight, especially severe depression. Yet realizing that all you have to do is find enough energy to try one thing that could be fun. Be around someone who is fun to be around. See how you're negating something's value before you've ever tried it. If you don't do those things, you will only stay depressed. So trying to look for what could possibly be playful in your world is so important. The second facet of fun, according to Catherine. Price is connection - and that means connection with a real person, not a screen, not a task or a chore. Because realize you can feel connected without having fun. You and someone else might be grieving together or having an argument. That's connection. But remember we're talking about the three facets of fun. So she states that true fun involves another living being I almost said human being, but then I thought, I think you can have fun with a pet. In fact, think about emotional support animals or the dogs that are regularly taken to see hospital patients. That's connection as well. Isolating can be a huge part of depression. You pull away, you withdraw either because you feel that you're protecting yourself or even that you're protecting others. Nobody needs to be around me now, but that's a mistake, and if you do it regularly, feeling disconnected is very lonely and will wipe out any chance of fun. Think about the tale of Scrooge who spent his life isolating, not dancing, not attending social gatherings because he was too caught up in himself. He didn't take advantage of the opportunities for connection there were in his life, and then fear finally leads him to do so. So what opportunities could you be passing over if you look for them, if you look for a way out of your sadness, you just may find it. The recent movie, A Man Named Otto did just this or told this story. Otto was grieving his wife's death and that's all he could think about until a neighbor needed his help and he got involved with her and her family and began living again. I realize that's a movie, but what opportunities for connection and fun could you be missing? The last facet is flow. Now before you think, “Oh, that's some weird word that's all about meditation” and then dismiss it. Think about some time when you were totally engrossed in something you were doing. It could have been coaching your kid's soccer game or building a piece of furniture or playing piano or guitar where you lost your sense of time. That's flow. Sometimes when I write, I find that two hours has gone by and I'm not even aware of that time that's flow. Now, yesterday I binged on Netflix and my whole afternoon was gone. That was also flow, sort of escapism as well ; , some of those ways to flow are perhaps more constructive, but flow is the third needed component for fun. Think about the last time you and a friend couldn't stop laughing about something, whatever it is, that sense of timelessness for a few seconds or hours is flow. There's a last tip that Ms. Price suggests, and it's on breaking the addictive power of your phone so you're more available to create true fun. I probably like these so much because they're very similar to the questions I ask my patients who are so enmeshed with someone else that I suggest they ask themselves these questions before they reach out trying to break that enmeshment. If I have a likely phone addict in my office, for example, what I'll see is they have to turn it over, but they keep it close by. They know that they'll need to look at it if it's face up. Apple watches or whatever kind of watch you use can also rob you of fun. If you get addicted to how many steps you took, for example, your life becomes about checking or having to check. I stopped wearing mine for just this reason. I felt as if I was becoming hooked on reaching those achievements instead of flowing in my life. Anyway, back to the topic of breaking up with your phone. She suggests using the acronym WWW -  they are questions to ask yourself before you even pick the silly thing up. Ask yourself first,  “What for, or what's the purpose of picking up your phone?” Are you avoiding something? Are you turning to someone else because you're anxious and need calming down? Are you looking for answers that someone else is going to give you because you've convinced yourself you can't do things for yourself? So what for what's the purpose of me scrolling? What's the purpose of me texting? What's the purpose of me going onto YouTube? Maybe it's a very good purpose … but it helps to ask yourself what for. The second question is, “Why right now?” wWhy in this moment are you picking up your phone rather than making another choice? I've heard from several Gen Zers that they pick up their phone the first thing in the morning to check their texts or their number of likes. Now I've been guilty of this as well, and I'm far from a Gen Zer. I've laughingly called it my “self-esteem” fix. But what's the other possibility that you didn't get any likes or there wasn't a text? Does that mean you're worth nothing, that your day off is off to an awful start? Or does it mean that you need to stop doing that looking externally for validation? Yep, that's what would be best. And the third question is, “What else?” What else could I do or say or be or try or be curious about? What are your other choices? What is it that Einstein said? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity or something like that. All you're doing is dredging a deeper tunnel for yourself to get out of. So do something different. Even it's a tiny thing. Tiny is good, tiny is enough. So the three questions are, “What for? What's the purpose? Why right now? And What else?” What else could you do other than picking up that phone and staring at that screen? You know, even fun comes in tiny packages and that can be in making those changes, those tiny changes that can be where you find your joy and your hope and a way out of depression. Speak pipe message from dr margaret rutherford.com And now the voicemail of the week. I told my husband of 40 years I was leaving him because he was narcissistic and abusive and a few days later he fell, broke his back was in the hospital for three months and diagnosed with precipitous cognitive decline. My adult children in their thirties want me to take care of him full-time. They're angry at me for taking any time for myself and they don't really wanna participate in it in a helpful way. I don't know whether to leave. I don't know whether to stay. I don't know what to do. This voicemail was difficult to listen to as you can hear just how trapped the listener sounds. Her story reminded me of several people I've worked with through the years that found themselves in similar situations that their spouses or partners' lives had changed and not for the better. They'd just received a bad medical diagnosis or they'd lost their job. One person was in a coma, maybe they'd been arrested, whatever. But it had happened at a time when my patient had had plans to leave the relationship and they didn't know what to do. So this woman says the same. I don't know what to do. There may be no good answers here. If her husband has treated his children the same way he's treated her, then it's understandable that they don't want to take care of him either. Perhaps they are mad because she can lose her divorce and they feel like they can't divorce their dad. Perhaps one or more of them also share narcissistic traits and are thinking only of themselves. But it sounds as if she's stuck feeling like she told him she's had enough and then his life would have it. Her husband is now dependent on someone's care and she can tell herself it's her care. Yet he's not created the kind of relationships with his family and certainly not with her. That would act as a reason for her to be or likely remain his caregiver. He's not going to turn over a new leaf and not show narcissistic behaviors now, or at least that's not likely to happen. So she feels stuck. I announced I was done and now it feels like if I act on those feelings, I'm betraying my husband, I'm abandoning him. My children will be angry with me. Does that mean she would lose connection with them? I can't tell from her words. What I would wonder with her, if she's been with someone narcissistic for 40 years, she's likely someone who takes on way too much responsibility. Whether that's appropriate or not, that's a long time to spend when you're constantly or often intermittently getting the message that you are not enough, you're not supportive enough, understanding enough , that you fail often, that you're wrong a lot. How has that affected her? What has she done with her anger, with her own grief? But as I've discussed with many people, as you make a choice like this to stay to go think about the things you predict that will be hard about either choice and ask yourself, how would I handle those hard things? Neither choice is likely going to avoid hardship, so which can you cope with better? I looked up precipitous cognitive decline and seems that it's a rapid decline. Does she have the energy for that? Had she made plans to leave that she has then canceled. What she may need to do is sit down with a paper and pencil or whatever and actually write down what she thinks her steps could be or when she's already taken ones that she needs to take. Perhaps talking with a lawyer about separating some of the financial issues. But I'm certainly sorry that this listener finds herself in such a difficult place. Going to a therapist in your local area could be very helpful as you sort out the myriad of feelings you're likely having and again, trying to organize the steps of what it would be like to stay, but probably stay in a different way or to go, you can ask them to help you organize and express those feelings so that whatever decision you make is one you can live with. No decision in either direction is going to be easy. Talk with your true friends about it and allow them to support you and good luck to you. Thank you all for being here. I hope that this was helpful in you thinking about your own fun and how to create it. What I'd really love is for a few of you to leave some reviews on Apple Podcasts especially. It's really kind of funny. I was telling someone the other day, it seemed like they just kept rolling in, the reviews kept rolling in until I reached a thousand, and then it's like somebody says, “oOh, she's got more than a thousand reviews. I won't leave one .” No SelfWork needs them in order for new people -  people who might be considering listening in will have a sense of what self-work is now in 2023. Last week Fitch dismissed the case against former police officer Canton Boykin. Boykin was charged with manslaughter in the 2015 shooting death of 26-year-old Ricky Ball, a black man from Columbus. Members of the human rights group brought a letter they tried to deliver to Fitch asking for an explanation for her decision, but security turned them away. Catherine Davis, whose son Mark was also killed in a police shooting, was among those calling for answers. She shares her experience with our Kobee Vance.Segment 2:Members of the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus say they are hearing and feeling the cries for change within their communities. From prison reform to the health disparities prevalent throughout the coronavirus pandemic, black legislators have been searching for solutions to many of the injustices that their constituents face. With the killing of George Floyd amplifying those inequities, caucus member John Faulkner, a Democrat from Holly Spring, tells our Desare Frazier protests are the first step to making change real.Segment 3:More than half of coronavirus deaths in Mississippi have occurred in long term care settings. And now, due a court ruling, the public knows the name of each facility with a suspected outbreak, along with the number of employee cases, resident cases and deaths at those facilities. Priya Chidambaram with the Kaiser Family Foundation tells our Ashley Norwood she's glad they're releasing more data on the impact COVID-19 is having in long term care facilities. The data release, however, is not free of skepticism. Tony Hamrick is president of the Mississippi Health Care Association. He acknowledges the data is public information, but also says facilities have always informed those who need to know of cases of transmission. On today's show: Austin, Texas musician and thereminist, Aileen Adler. I first met Aileen back in the late '80s during the halcyon days of Tower Records, when we both worked at store #173 on South Street in Philadelphia. I moved to Alaska and then San Francisco in the early '90s, around the same time when Aileen moved to another artist's hub, Austin, Texas. We lost touch with each other for a couple decades after that, finally meeting up again in the Facebook era. From there it was that sort of half-awareness you got from social media, I'd see pictures of Aileen looking striking in theatrical clothing, entertaining at events, but what it was she was actually doing was somehow lost on me. Reading that she was back in Philly for a visit, I thought it would be a perfect time to crack the mystery of Aileen Adler. Aileen was always a dynamic character, and I wasn't disappointed. We discuss her early years arriving in the Philly, her move to Austin, singing and adopting the electronic instrument the theremin, visiting Morocco, blacksmithing and collaborating of John “Drumbo” French from Capt, Beefheart's legendary Magic Band. We'll also hear some samples of Aileen's music, with the group the Temple of Ape Collective, joined by the didgeridoo from her album, THEREMIN FOR THE MASSES, which you can discover at thereminforthemasses.com as well as Aileen's theremin joined by the pianist and composer Catherine Davis.

Catherine Davis knows how marketing for non-profits differs from marketing in the for-profit sector — and she succeeds at both. From building her marketing foundation at Leo Burnett and Diageo to her current role as the CMO of Feeding America, Catherine has mastered the ability to distill powerful stories into tangible pieces that entire populations can connect with. Through strategic brand tracking strategies and working to solve an issue that she is passionate about, Catherine is proving that the role of a CMO as a storyteller has never been more important.   As Renegade Thinkers Unite meets its 101st episode milestone, Catherine Davis and Drew sit down to discuss why a career in marketing does not have to be linear to be successful. Catherine also explains how to capture individual stories, overcome challenges in brand awareness, and manage a non-profit CEO’s expectations. In this episode, Catherine will walk you through what it takes to communicate what your organization stands for and how to break down big issues into personal stories. You’ll be inspired to make your marketing matter — catch the full story now. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts - Stitcher- or Podsearch What You’ll Learn Catherine works to capture individual stories - a skill she learned early on in her marketing career Catherine picked up on 2 major lessons that have laid the foundation for her career in marketing for non-profits. The first is to identify and select a marketing strategy. Then, you have to break down that strategy into emotional and logical components that can be woven into stories, statistics, and campaigns. She explains that people find it much harder to dismiss individual stories from real people struggling with hunger. By encouraging people to have conversations about the bigger issues in America, even if they aren’t necessarily “measurable,” Catherine can begin to see how the tides are turning for the hunger problem. Measuring progress in marketing for non-profits - it doesn’t come down to quarterly reports Both Drew and Catherine agree that you can’t begin to measure your non-profit’s success if you don’t use a brand tracking study. Even Feeding America, the 3rd largest non-profit in the United States, couldn’t measure their level of brand awareness without using a study - one that gave them valuable feedback into their brand and messaging. Catherine and her marketing team discovered that across a 2 year period, Feeding America’s level of brand awareness and passion for solving hunger went up from 24% to 51%. Catherine explains that measuring the impact of a campaign often doesn’t occur after just a few months - solving an issue like hunger can take a decade or more for progress to be made. She outlines how to maintain support from your CEO and more on this episode. Key pieces of advice for CMOs in non-profits There are a few key takeaways from this episode that every CMO should hear. Catherine explains that in order for marketing for non-profits to be effective, CMOs need to be 100% clear on who the organization is and what it stands for. Then, you must execute in a way that people understand - avoid academia-type language that isn’t easily understood. Finally, you cannot assume that people believe in the same ideals as you do. By speaking with a single, focused, and passionate voice, you can find success in your marketing efforts. WHAT IF WE'VE BEEN WRONG?

Life leads. Life will unite our country. Life levels the playing field. Life transcends racial barriers and it is causing Blacks and Whites to unite and expose Planned Parenthood’s 21st century Black Genocide agenda which in 1939 it named “The Negro Project.” In 2017, it killed about 360,000 black people, the majority of them at Planned Parenthood abortion mills. The birth control/eugenics giant pretends that its racist agenda is a thing of the past, but the statistics and where it places its facilities proves a different narrative. In fact, Planned Parenthood is bald face lying to American citizens. Planned Parenthood has succeeded in making the black woman’s womb the most dangerous place for a black person to be. It is the cause of Black genocide in America and it is time to stop the barbaric slaughter. Child bearing age black women make up about 3% of the population, but tragically they represent about 36% of all abortions. In fact, more black people die from abortion than all accidents, injuries, disease and homicides! Kennedy's inaugural address **A summary of today's show:** On today's show, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson calls John F. Kennedy's inaugural address is one of the most eloquent expressions of human rights and dignity in history and reconciles it with his famous "Houston" speech on his Catholic faith. Also, the Catholic Leadership Institute is preparing a generation of laity to assist their pastors in leadership in the Church and the Massachusetts Catholic Conference has a new executive director. **1st segment:** Scot and Fr. Chris welcome Carl A. Anderson via phone. On Thursday, 5:30pm at Fanueil Hall, he will be delivering an address called “Making God's Work our Own: The Continued Importance of President John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address 50 Years Later.” Carl said the address was so inspiring for so many Americans, that "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country," became a byword. The Knights have always been proud that JFK was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus. They were surprised that so little was being done in general to mark the 50th anniversary of the speech and so they set out to properly mark the event. (To RSVP for the address on Thursday please email [jfk@kofc.org](mailto:jfk@kofc.org) or call 203-752-4483. The event is co-sponsored by the Boston Leadership Forum, which brings speakers to downtown Boston.) Scot said one of the more powerful lines is "the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God." Carl said this is the main statement he will address in the speech he will deliver on Thursday. The Knights led the movement to have the words "under God" added to the Pledge of Allegiance because they hold to the truth that the rights and human dignity we possess is a gift not from the State, with discretion to give and take, but is ingrained in the human person by God, that it is intrinsic to us. These rights are superior and precede the State. There is a standard which government must measure itself by, not political power, but a moral standard. This is key to Kennedy's thinking, to his address, and to America. Fr. Chris said much of the inaugural address sounds so much like [Gaudium et Spes](http://www.vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat-ii_cons_19651207_gaudium-et-spes_en.html), the pastoral constitution on the modern world from Vatican II. You can see the relationship between the speech and Vatican II. Carl said it's not a coincidence that the speech opens with a recognition of God's authority and closes with a recognition of the duty of to provide for our fellow man under the authority of God. It's known that then-Cardinal Montini, who later became Pope Paul VI, heard and then studied the address and it may have informed his encyclicals on social justice including [Populurum Progressio](http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/paul_vi/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-vi_enc_26031967_populorum_en.html). In the address, Kennedy said: >We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans -- born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage, and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world. Carl said that while JFK famously said he would not let his Catholic faith impose itself on the government of the US, his inaugural also shows that he would let his Catholic faith and its fundamental principles about the nature of Man inform how he governed. A nation is a living organism, an expression of a people with a culture and history and roots. Kennedy's address is one of the most eloquent addresses in history because of the kind of human rights it articulated. Carl feels strongly that heritage is important to pass on to our children because the lesson of the last century is that freedom is only one generation from passing away. Fr. Chris was struck by the hopefulness of the speech: "If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich." He sees a masterful use of words to display optimism and hope. Carl said this is the fourth pillar of his own speech this Thursday. Catholics reading JFK's speech can see a resonance with their own worldview. Scot asked how Catholics can reconcile this speech with the speech JFK gave weeks earlier in Houston in which some, including Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver, say he privatized the religious faith of public officials. Carl said in the context of the vicious anti-Catholic presidential campaign, JFK was addressing a different kind of audience before his election than those he was addressing after his election when he'd broken through that barrier. He also said both speeches should be read together to see JFK was not abandoning these fundamental issues. After all in Houston, JFK said he would not impose his religious belief on the country, but if there comes a time when his religious faith comes in conflict with the duties of his office, he would resign his office, not his Catholicism. Too many Catholics in public office today opt to resign their Catholicism. On the subject of the Knights of Columbus, in 1981 they had 1.3 million members, and now Carl noted that today they have 1.8 million members with 40 years of consecutive annual membership growth and $80 billion of life insurance in force for KofC families. Last year, local councils gave $150 million to charity. The growth continues to produce more works of charity to make our parishes and communities better. Fr. Chris said as a priest and as a seminary vice-rector he knows of the works of the Knights to support both parishes and seminarians. Carl said they are proud to support seminarians in so many countries. He said they are also proud that a fellow Knight, Sargent Shriver, started [Special Olympics](http://www.specialolympics.org/) and they continue that support. They support the [Wheelchair Foundation](http://www.wheelchairfoundation.org/) to provide wheelchairs to the poor worldwide. After the Haiti earthquake, they decided that every amputee child in Haiti would receive a prosthetic arm or leg. They are partnering with [Project MediShare](http://www.projectmedishare.org/) in Haiti. They provide food and flood assistance in Mexico and the Philippines. At the local level, they are doing what people need. If a family is struck with tragedy they are there to help. They provided $11 million after Katrina to help the Gulf Coast. There are also 70 million volunteer-hours of Knights of Columbus in parishes and communities. Men who aren't Knights already will become a better Catholic man, husband, father, citizen, and parishioner as Knights. It's a place they can increase their own spiritual life and devotional life, but also help their family and their community. Get involved and do yourself and your family a world of good. **2nd segment:** Scot and Fr. Chris discuss their interview with Carl Anderson. Scot noted that the Kennedy family in recent years have been criticized for not putting Catholic teaching into practice in their public service, but the JFK inaugural speech is obviously Catholic faith being put into action. Fr. Chris said it shows that faith is not something we hide or keep in a back room, but use to bring us closer to the Lord and to our neighbor. Carl Anderson's book ["A Civilization of Love"](http://www.acivilizationoflove.com/cl/index.html) ([Link to purchase on Amazon.com](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003GAN3GE/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=catholicnetrevie&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003GAN3GE)) articulated a lot of Catholic social teaching as a very easy read. He was clear in stressing that human dignity is a gift from God, not a gift of the State. Fr. Chris was happy to see that he wasn't afraid to take on politicians today who would compartmentalize their faith. Carl is often called the leading Catholic layman today. He has been appointed to many Vatican and Church organizations as a member of the Pontifical Academy for Life (1998) and the Pontifical Council for the Laity (2002), and as a consultor to the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace (2003). Pope Benedict XVI has appointed him as a consultor to the Pontifical Council for Social Communications (2007) and as a member of the Pontifical Council for the Family (2008). He is a member of the Board of Superintendence of the (I.O.R.) (Institute for the Works of Religion - Vatican Bank) (2009) and has served as a consultant to the Pro-Life Committee of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) since 2002. Fr. Chris recalled how one local Knights council in one of his parishes built a handicapped ramp at the home of a young man in a wheelchair. Scot also noted that the Knights of Columbus also gives to the Church on the macro level, giving a loan to the Archdiocese of Boston when Cardinal Seán first came to Boston to help the archdiocese stay on a steady financial footing. They also paid to restore the Bernini colonnade around St. Peter's Square. (Actually it was the façade of St. Peter's Basilica that the Knights [funded the restoration](http://www.kofc.org/un/en/news/releases/detail/60212.html).) The Knights offer monetary support to seminarians so the seminarians can stay focused on their formation and studies. Fr. Chris said we often see the Knights outside supermarkets selling Tootsie Rolls to raise funds to help the vulnerable, poor, and marginalized. They are also very active in pro-life work. Scot said he plans to be at the speech on Thursday and Fr. Chris said St. John seminary is bringing its seminarians as well, not just to show support for the Knights, but also to educate and inform them on the intersection of faith and politics in the public square. **3rd segment:** Fr. Chris and Scot welcome Karen Walters from the Catholic Leadership Institute and Linda DeCristoforo, Pastoral Associate at Our Lady of Grace Parish in Chelsea. Linda and her 16 classmates are graduating today from the Tending the Talents program. Karen said the group has been learning to lead how to lead in five contexts: self, one-to-one, team, organization, and the overall Church.  Growing in self-knowledge is the first step. Linda said they used a [DISC profile inventory](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DISC_assessment) to look at their own personality types and to see the variety of personality types of the people they work with, and to learn the tools to improve relationships with others. Karen said the curriculum is based on the leadership in context model. We use certain practices when we lead and we use them differently depending on the context. We need to be aware of how we're leading and what context we're in. Fr. Chris asked about conflict resolution in the training. Linda said they learned how to look at conflict pastorally, to be compassionate, and to be able to speak on what the Church teaches on whatever the conflict is about. Sometimes it means to move on. Fr. Chris asked about the time commitment. Linda said they had two full days every other month and online homework in between those gatherings. Leadership in the Church context is different from corporate leadership. The main difference is that CLI follows the model of Jesus' leadership of the apostles and that of the apostles leading the Church, plus they incorporate the teachings of saints. But they also include best practices from the corporate world. It's also not just about the outcome, but the process for how they get there, including caring for the dignity of all those involved. Linda said her favorite topic was studying her key responsibility areas for her personal life and then within her ministry. From that they were able to set goals, which gave her a better sense of her ministry and in the context of leadership. She said it was helpful for her own self to be self-reflective and then to articulate to her co-workers so that everyone is on the same page. Fr Chris said many of his brother priests rave about the Good Leaders Good Shepherds program for priests. Karen said it is the same model of leadership in context. The key difference is that in Tending the Talents there is more that takes place away from the classroom and instead takes place online. In the GLGS program there is more content about building fraternity among the priests. Tending the Talents is now in 8 dioceses with about 200 people participating. This program in Boston was the first in the country. Boston is also the first diocese to take part in all the programs of the Catholic Leadership Institute. Linda's pastor went through Good Leaders Good Shepherds and hearing him talk about it made her curious, and now that they've both been through the same process they are on the same page with the same vision for their parish. Karen said they found it important for priests and lay leaders to have this sort of formation because the unfortunate reality in the Church is we're losing more priests than we're gaining every year. The average pastor becomes pastor with less experience and has a larger parish than ever. He also needs to rely more often on the laity to help him lead. Scot said his sense is that in the old days, the seminary formation assumed many years of apprenticeship with experienced pastors. Karen said priests are formed to teach, sanctify, and govern. The first two happen very well in seminaries, but governing was often neglected. They work to cover that gap for priests and to give the skills to lay people to help them. **4th segment:** Scot and Fr. Chris discuss the appointment of James F. Driscoll as executive director of the Massachusetts Catholic Conference. He succeeds Gerry D'Avolio, who came back as interim director after the sudden passing of Ed Saunders last year. From the press release announcing his appointment, the Massachusetts bishops said: >"We are pleased to welcome Jim Driscoll as Executive Director. He is an experienced professional and dedicated Catholic who shares our common belief regarding the important role and mission of the Church. The Catholic Church in Massachusetts plays a pivotal role across a wide landscape that intersects secular society and the ministry of the Church. We seek to reach common ground on many issues, while working to advance the important positions of the Church in the areas of life, human dignity and social justice.” Scot said the Mass. Catholic Conference is the organized voice of the Catholic Church in Massachusetts on Beacon Hill. It applies Church teaching to the common good in public policy and speaks with one voice on behalf of all Catholics in the public square. Catholics look to the bishops for leadership on these social issues, including life issues, family issues, and more. They provide moral leadership and a definition of complex issues from a Catholic point of view. The four dioceses of Massachusetts are Boston, Worcester, Fall River, and Springfield. The Conference has existed since 1969. Each state has a conference of its own. Fr. Chris said Catholic social teaching is not just for Catholics but serves the common human good and respects  human dignity. It challenges the State and us as Catholics to recognize the common good. Scot also wanted to mention Dan Avila, the associate director for policy and research, and Catherine Davis and Kathy Magno who also work at the Mass. Catholic Conference. They have continued all of the work of the conference during the change in leadership in the past year. Fr. Chris said they have a strong moral theology program at St. John's to help the seminarians articulate the Church's teaching. They also bring in bioethics experts from around the country to help them articulate these very complex matters. The field changes so quickly that it's a constant work of learning.
