What's the real reason you want to write a book? If your answer doesn't connect directly to your business goals, you may be missing the mark. In this episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, Peter sits down with Cathy Fyock, a book strategist who helps authors write the right book—the one that aligns with their business, audience, and long-term strategy. Cathy shares why writing a book should never be step one. Instead, authors must start with a solid strategy: What do you want the book to do for your business? Who exactly are you writing it for? How will you leverage it to create opportunity, revenue, or credibility? We explore the importance of aligning your book's content and audience with your current business model. Cathy also explains why writing for “everyone” is a mistake, and why serving a clearly defined niche can lead to powerful results—even if it feels narrow. If you've ever wrestled with the choice between self-publishing, hybrid, or traditional publishing, Cathy breaks down the pros and cons of each. Her recommendation? Own your IP, own your margins, and stay in control. You'll also hear surprising insights about how some authors make more from not selling books—using them as a powerful sales tool to land clients, speaking gigs, and consulting contracts. Three Key Takeaways: • Start with strategy, not writing. A successful book begins with clear goals, a defined audience, and alignment with your business model—not just a blank page and good intentions. • Niche focus drives greater impact. Writing for a well-defined, specific audience builds credibility and creates stronger results than trying to appeal to everyone. • Books are business tools, not just products. The real ROI often comes not from book sales, but from using the book to generate leads, secure speaking engagements, or land high-value clients. If you found value in the strategic insights shared in this episode, you won't want to miss our conversation with Becky Robinson: "Writing a Book As an Extension of Your Business." Becky, the founder and CEO of Weaving Influence, delves into how authors can seamlessly integrate their books into their broader business strategies. She shares practical advice on launching a book, building a lasting platform, and ensuring your message reaches the right audience over time. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to amplify their thought leadership and make their book a cornerstone of their business growth.

You@Work: Unlocking Human Potential in the Workplace I'm a big believer in the power of a book. Writing a book is hard and a lot of work because it means distilling all of your thought leadership into something that's cohesive, focused and really sharp. When I started as an HR consultant, speaker and trainer, I wrote to establish my thought leadership and differentiate myself from the pack to grow my business. A book can absolutely move you into new territory, help you claim your thought leadership in an area that you hadn't been able to claim before. I have a group coaching component which gives people writing exercises, the camaraderie and community. I also have a one on one coaching program that goes for six months which guides folks through the process of writing. I also have writing retreats, which is a great way for super busy people to have dedicated writing time, and has community elements, direction and guidance. Commercial break I've learned is that there are going to be people out there who all they need is the book, but there are others who will need extra level of guidance after reading my book. I work with the people that need to work with me, and then the rest can find the secret sauce in my book. I believe that the process of writing actually changes you and that you become a different person where you step into more of who you were meant to be. As a book coach I don't just write books randomly and just hope that they do something for the business, I always have to be very strategic. I use my work book now with my new coaching clients, and has therefore become an integral part of my business. The spoken word is wonderful, but the written word just has the staying power that is hard to beat. Go out there and make your mark, I really believe that you will make your mark when you write your book. ………………………………………………… Do you want to be a go to expert that news reporters, anchors and media producers turn to? SEASON: 1 EPISODE: 12 Episode Overview: The LinkedIn business platform continues to be an integral part of any business strategy. In today's competitive marketplace, It is becoming more and more important not only to build a great inner circle but to move beyond and to build large diverse networks. In this episode… Jess Tiffany, CEO of the Marketing and Networking University shares easy-to-follow, practical, and concise insights that if followed can make all the difference in elevating and enhancing your LinkedIn presence. Whether you are a novice with LinkedIn or a Super User, you will find some great insights that can be applied immediately. Join me now for my conversation with Jess Tiffany. Guest Bio: At age 8, Jess Tiffany conned the Pastor's wife at church to let him sell Avon to all the Grandmas at church. He just smiled and they spent money.
She was a mother, raising her child, never even thinking about owning her own business, and as her daughter got older, she was threatening to go back to work, when the right thing came along. Little by little, one introduction lead to another and she began working for someone who was willing to work around her schedule and requests. She told him what she wanted, and then they began a trial period of 30 days to see if it would work. It would work… Along the way she's had several incredible breaks. Especially one day when Jack Canfield's VP was in her audience and then she got the call. Jack Canfield called her and that began a new phase. She learned very quickly that it's all about communications skills: tell people what you want. And even more importantly, a sense of humor rules! (I couldn't agree more.) My guest this week, Lois Creamer, very wisely reminds us: we're all selling and marketing ourselves, every day! If you want to have a great life and love your work. Be sure to: Make changes, take chances, and follow your dreams Remember: there will always be ups and downs in your work or any area of your life And from her famous, often shared words: "You risk a "yes" every time you ask for something. Are you willing to take the risk?" As all of my interviews have been proving, it is possible to love your work and your life. Ultimately, Lois has the life she has because she wanted to have no regrets. What a great lesson. This is exactly why I do the work I do! More about Lois here: Industry expert Lois Creamer works with speakers who want to book more business, make more money and fully monetize their intellectual property. Episode 24: Ever think about writing a book? In this episode, I interview Cathy Fyock who’s a professional book writing coach. We’ll discuss how she works with her authors, why you should consider writing book and part of the process involved in accomplishing it. Cathy began coaching after writing her own books. She had been consulting, but wasn’t as happy in this role, as she’d hoped. She had managed to write 4 of her 5 books in less than 6 weeks. A colleague asked her about her process for accomplishing this so efficiently. That’s when it actually dawned on her that her process did, in fact, exist. She was invited to give a program on it and engage in a coaching role. That’s where it all began. Many people want to write a book. They recognize the need, but they don’t understand where to get started or how to stay on course to complete it. Cathy has the solution to these and many other challenges. What Types of Clients Does Cathy Fyock Help? Cathy works with professional speakers, consultants, coaches, thought-leaders, solopreneurs, wealth advisors, CPAs, attorneys and realtors. If you use your expertise as a strategy to serve your client base, codifying that expertise is a way to educate, inspire and sell your client base. Having published a book can position you as an industry expert. It lends a high-level of credibility to your personal and professional brand. The topics in your book can help people realize an alignment between their goals and your ability to help them to achieve those goals. Your book will help promote a sense of trust and authenticity between you and your target audience. Cathy is a huge fan of writing your own book, rather than using a ghost writer. The process will help you to clarify your thoughts and mastery of the topic. It May Not Be Easy Cathy admits, writing a book is hard work. In fact, most of her clients don’t actually love to write. This is why having a coach is vital to the book’s organization, your accountability or other support issues. Authority is one of Cathy’s latest projects. It’s about the power of authorship. It’s an anthology of stories and perspectives from 15 different thought-leaders who share their advice and experience. It’s already a Wall Street Journal and USA Today best-seller. 3 Basic Challenges for Authors The first challenge is FOCUS. It’s developing the strategic plan for your book that aligns with your business strategy. The second challenge is TIME. It relates to disciplining yourself to find the time with an already busy schedule. The third challenge is DEALING with that NEGATIVE INTERNAL VOICE. It’s the classic imposter syndrome. This can be one of the greatest obstacles for some authors. Cathy serves as their cheerleader to encourage them to accomplish what they’re capable of accomplishing. Once the Manuscript is Written Cathy functions as a “developmental editor.” Cathy can work with you to ensure all the correct pieces fit together regarding flow, logic and the ability to foster reader-engagement. She is not a publisher, but she has extensive connections with publishers and can help an author to find the right one for him/her and the subject matter. There are different models for publishers. Cathy realizes the need for her authors to be able to purchase their own books at cost. They need to maintain creative control and own the copyright (as well as future rights). You have to understand the fine print. Cathy can help you to navigate part or all of it. She understands the business aspect of writing a book. How Does Cathy Fyock Work with Authors? Cathy loves to speak with anyone who’s even thinking about the idea, with no obligation. For those who are ready, she offers multiple types of services. Her Coaching Service is her main program. It’s a one-on-one process that lasts 6 months. It encompasses strategy planning, accountability calls, connections and post-publishing activities. She also provides workshops, writing retreats, master classes, online courses and other services, all of which are described on her website. Dealing with Accountability This is obviously a significant factor for some people along their journey to writing a book. She can help to problem solve to determine what’s getting in the way of progress. Did you forget to book time to do it? Did it go on the To Do List, instead of the calendar? There are strategies Cathy can offer to help her offers to cope and to complete the journey. While the subject matter will vary by author and the author’s experience, the process of writing a book is fairly similar. Cathy Fyock is your book-writing Sherpa as you climb this incredible mountain. Blog-to-Book This is a concept for helping people to repurpose their blogs to discover the book you’ve already written. Cathy will add direction and perspective to help along the way. Part of the strategy is to map the content progression from the blogs to the book outline. Finding Your Brand Voice Figuring out how you, as an author, want to present the ideas can concept, is an important step. This is vital for a speaker who may be giving a talk on the stage and selling their book in the back of the room. You need to be the same on the page as you were on the stage. This relates to your brand voice. It’s about authenticity and congruency. You may have multiple degrees and accomplishments, but your audience wants you to be more conversational. You should try to overcome the worry of what your peers will think if you present the material in a more digestible format. Write for the audience. Creating a Book on Tape This is more of a publishing issue, rather than a coaching issue. Nonetheless, Cathy is a big fan of the audio-based format for books and related products. Hearing the actual voice of the author can convey the style and personality more effectively than just words on a page. Cathy’s 3 Tips for Someone Who’s Considering Writing a Book Begin with a strategic focus. Identify what you want your book to do for you and your business. Identify your thesis statement. It helps you define what it is your book is about. Be very clear about your targeted reader. They should be aligned with your targeted client, in most cases. Consider the physical demographics and the readers’ psychographic characteristics. These three tips enable you to avoid speaking at the reader. Instead, you’ll be able to talk with him or her because you’ve figured out how to connect with the audience. As you’re writing, always remember the WIIFM – What’s In It For Me? If you neglect your audience’s needs, they’ll be more apt to neglect your book, from the outset. Are You Interested in Writing a Book? Cathy Fyock’s belief in being true to your heart sparked her career as an author and human resources consultant. Fyock launched her author-consultancy business, named Your Possibility Partner, to provide professionals with coaching support to help them cut through the daily distractions of everyday life and find the focus they need to write their books. She has provided keynotes and workshops for hundreds of clients and has authored six books, including “On Your Mark: From First Word to First Draft in 6 Weeks.” Fyock was an employment strategist with several business and HR consulting firms before leading her own company, Innovative Management Concepts, for more than 20 years. Fyock also sang professionally with the Kentucky Opera for two seasons. Fyock received her undergraduate degree in music from Western Kentucky University and her master’s in human resources from the University of Louisville.
Cathy Fyock is an author of eight books and a book coach, and she hates to write. In spite of that, she wrote most of her books in just six weeks! In this episode, Cathy shares a number of excellent and actionable tips for writing your nonfiction book, getting started when you’re struggling, and the benefits of publishing a book for you and your business. Her most recent book, Blog2Book: Repurposing Content to Discover the Book You've Already Written, is also the title of a seminar that I attended in February 2017. I really connected with what she said and, in large part, that is because she identifies with the pain of struggling to start writing, or struggling to get the words out of your head and onto the page. Before you even start the writing process, you have to prepare. Get hyper clear about why you want to write this book. Is it just because you have always wanted to write a book, or are you writing a nonfiction book around your area of expertise as a way to establish your thought leadership, get more clients, more business, or as a revenue stream? There can be a number of reasons that you may want to write. They're all legitimate, but your reason may inform how you go about writing the book. Get hyper clear on what this is book about. A lot of people get stuck because they know a lot, and they could potentially write several books, but you can only write one book at a time... and even that is sometimes tricky. What is your thesis statement? What is your 30-second commercial? Establish your target audience. Who is that reader? Get very specific about who that target market is, and then start to think about what it is that you really want a reader to know. What is it that they have questions about? What are the issues that they would want to have addressed in a book on this topic? Here’s a hot tip: To help her clients get clear on what their books are about and learn more about their audience, Cathy has “Ask Me About My Book” buttons. These are a valuable research and motivational tool because answering questions about your book will reveal what is compelling about your topic, if you have honed it properly, and get you thinking about the project more often. Now you are prepared with an outline, a reason, and a business plan. How do start writing a book, even if you hate writing? A lot of people make the mistake of starting with the first chapter, but that’s one of the hardest chapters to write. Start with whatever chapter in the middle is calling to you. The first and last are the hardest to write because you need to have that big vision of where you're going and where you've been. Just start with a page – it doesn’t matter which one. After you have something written (and that first win!), continue to write out of order. You just want to create momentum. You want to create energy and excitement for yourself, because this is a big and arduous task. Don’t get hung up on editing. You need to write the book first, then you can edit it. Writing and editing are two different brain functions, so trying to do them both simultaneously is exhausting. Just get it all out there, raw, and polish it later. Learn when you write best. Early in the writing process, set timed writing sessions in the morning, afternoon, and late at night to assess when you are most productive. You may not be a morning person but still do your best writing in the morning. Learn where you write best. Try writing in different environments to see where you are the most productive. Some people thrive in a hectic environment (like the coffee shop or a restaurant), but others need to be in a cave. Use writing prompts. Just google the term, use an app, or think about something weird. The most different writing prompts can sometimes produce the most creative results, because thinking about two disparate subjects can result in lateral thinking. Practice time blocking. Schedule the times that you will write, put them on your calendar, commit to actually blocking off that time, and be very detailed with your plans. You don’t have to finish a whole chapter. Give yourself one small, but achievable, goal with each time block so that you can continue racking up wins. Another way to chunk out the writing process, and the premise of her most recent book, is to write a blog first. You still need a plan and a theme, but writing 500-1000 words once or twice a week is much easier to chew than a whole book. By the end of the year, you will have a great outline for your next book, and you can use the blog to market the book throughout the process. After you are done writing, publishing a book offers distinct benefits for you and your business. It can increase your authority in the eyes of your clients, customers, and prospects and differentiate your business from the competition. Your book is your new business card. If you give someone your traditional business card, more likely than not it's going to end up in the trash can. However, no one throws away a book. It can sit on a desk, on a shelf, or anywhere. People can see your book, and every time they do you've made another impression in their mind... or, worst case scenario, they give the book to someone else. Another touch point.
