There are products and services that don't require a lot of thought before you buy them — commodities, like toothpaste, shoes, calculators, peaches. But there are others that require a lot of education before someone has enough understanding to be able to make an informed decision about what exactly the product is and how it might be able to help them if they should choose to buy it.Now, a podcast can do a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to filling that gap and providing the education and the understanding required for someone to make a buying decision, and it can make tons of other areas of your sales and delivery process a lot easier.Today, I've got a deep dive into a podcast process and optimization strategy for you with Deniero Bartolini, host of The Remote CEO show podcast. He's a digital entrepreneur, bestselling author and founder of Remote CEO, a company that helps professional firms scale with remote teams.Deniero has been podcasting for almost a decade and a half and is incredibly generous with his insights into the different ways that you can leverage a podcast in a business, from providing that critical early information and education to potential clients of high ticket offers, to building trust with new and old clients of any kind of product and increasing your revenue, which is not always easy as a direct line through podcasting, but he's got some great examples and in case studies of exactly how he has helped clients do that.Listen to the episode below or read the blog post here: podcastingforbusiness.com/90Tune in to the full episode to learn:Deniero Bartoloni's journey from DJing to podcastingIndoctrination through podcastingPodcasting and the sales cycleBalancing solo and interview episodesStreamlining podcast production with The Remote CEOHow metrics and audience goals shape growthPodguesting versus hostingFinding the right podcast personaSigns that you should podcast for your businessMy book, Podcasting for Business is coming out this September — learn more about it here.Connect with Deniero BartoliniDeniero: “Everybody can find me at denierob.com — book, podcasts, and everything else.If you are a solopreneur looking to scale up with a remote team, or you are an existing business owner that has maybe a team of 10, 15 people, but you also want to build a hybrid team, then also reach out to us because we have some great stuff that we want to share with you.”Website | LinkedIn | Instagram | The Remote CEO ShowBe A Guest on The Company ShowDo you have a podcast that's making a major difference in your business or know one that is? You want to create an audiobook but how in the world do you produce one? Great question! I hadn't a clue until I rolled up my sleeves and decided it was time for me to bring an audiobook to life. What I learned in the process was the seemingly simple journey of recording you reading your book was anything but simple. Worth it? Yes. Simple? No way! I'm so grateful that I was able to produce the audiobook alongside Phil, my audiobook supporter, and together we navigated the hours upon hours of recording, editing, music creation and more to ensure the book readers listen to would create the same journey as the one that they read. Want a sneak peek into what it takes to produce an audiobook? Well today's your lucky day because Phil and I tell all… the good, the bad, the stomach rumbles and the air bubbles too… on this episode of The emPowered Author Podcast.Marketing should emPower you, not be the bane of your existence. Words matter. Read a book by Mitch Albom and be reminded that each and every word has purpose. Work with an editor and they will help you leverage words with precision and meaning. Words connect people, break down walls and build bridges. And, guess what... audio matters too. Listen to a poorly produced podcast, and the mouth noises become like nails on chalkboards. Video calls with poor internet break conversations, hindering discussion that need to be had. And, audio matters in audiobooks if you want to transport a reader/listener into your story. A well-written book increases someone's impression of the author just as a well-produced audiobook does! I've said it before and I'll say it again. Books build bridges and break down walls. And this episode's discussion is proof of it. I'm joined with my friend and fellow author, Jane Gleeson, author of Who Stole My Ovaries?. She is a heart-centered support for women who are facing fertility challenges. Her book is raw and honest and real, and our conversation on this episode is too. As someone who navigated fertility concerns myself, I appreciate Jane's insights and even wish I had known her or read her book years ago myself. There is power in story and connecting our stories as well. Jane's book has stories interwoven throughout, and in doing so, she connects many stories of women just like me who didn't have the picture perfect pregnancies. Books offer honest opportunities to talk about things many are fearful of. Marketing should emPower you, not be the bane of your existence. How does your reader consume information? It's one of the first questions I ask authors who are considering if an audiobook is a good solution for them. If you find yourself considering that maybe an audiobook is a way to share your message with those who need it most and consume information in that format, then by all means, it may be time to turn that book into an audiobook! But before you dive all in, I want you to make sure you have the technical guidance to do so at the professionalism that you and your book deserve. This episode of The emPowered Author Podcast walks through the technical requirements, narration decisions and producing considerations any author should reflect upon before deciding if an audiobook is a good solution for their readers and message. And, if you'd like to explore an audiobook, take a listen to mine: Make Your Author emPact: Sell More Books, Increase Your Reach and Achieve Your Why. Ever gone out to dinner alone? It's not something I do regularly, but found myself sitting at a farm to table restaurant that made each plate from scratch at order while on my CEO retreat. The 45-minute wait was worth every minute, however the time I sat waiting for it was an opportunity for a lot of conversation time with me, myself and I. In normal Stephanie fashion, I found myself exploring the farm to table process and then quickly jumped to the manuscript to book process. (Y'all… I was on a business CEO retreat. What do you expect?!)I decided to leverage the inspiration and use it as a launchpad for the final podcast episode in Season 12 on Self-Publishing. On this episode, I walk you through our “farm to table” approach on how to bring your book to life! Marketing should emPower you, not be the bane of your existence. I was having dinner with a friend who is working on publishing her first novel. We talked about everything under the sun… books and life related. But when she shared the advice of her book coach, I had to add to it. “I'm going to self publish,” she told me. “Because my book coach said it could take me a year or two for traditional publishing.” I suggested that she add a few years to that. I know people who are multiple years out and still can't find a literary agent. She's self publishing, which I think is smart in today's publishing landscape, and if that's the route you're taking, I want to share with you all the other amazing perks of self-publishing for you to take advantage of. This episode is all about self-publishing benefits to take full advantage of. If you are considering self-publishing, I think you'll find this episode enlightening. Ready, set, launch! That's a phrase that builds momentum. It's a phrase that indicates that the countdown is on. You prepare, you get ready, then you run. Launching… book launching included… is much like that. Release on the other hand has phrases like just release the tension and release the hounds come with a whole different energy and purpose. It's like you just open the flood gates and let it go. And, as you can expect it, a book release is the same way. Launch versus release is a constant battle I help authors better understand on the regular. They aren't quite sure the difference between the two and there is one; a big one! This episode walks you through the difference between book release and book launch as it pertains to marketing a forthcoming book that maybe you're in the process of writing. You're on the self-publishing journey, but what does that mean for printing? What options exist? And what is the difference between print-on-demand and offset printing; IngramSpark and Amazon's KDP? In the self-publishing space, this is very complicated for authors to grasp, oddly enough. It's a journey I walk my clients through tie and time again, and it's still a lot to understand. For a book to thrive, groundwork must be laid beforehand. Just like a plant needs a solid foundation to stand strong, self-publishing an amazing book requires more than just its content. It becomes an extension of you, reflecting your thoughts, ideas, and experiences. Moreover, your book can serve as a powerful tool to build and grow your business. It establishes your authority, attracts potential customers, and expands your reach. As you embark on self-publishing, it's crucial to assess the skills you possess to help you achieve your goals. By considering these three "roots," you can lay a solid foundation for a successful self-published book and a thriving business.During this episode, I walk you through these questions to consider when self-publishing your book. I met an author who was in the thick of churn. Y'all, she was cranking out content like a machine. But she was tired and I was tired hearing about all the movement she was doing… but getting little traction. Through a series of “why” questions… I got to the root as to why she was doing all of it… and it was because she thought she was supposed to. It was that simple. Maybe you think you are suppose to too (and, secret, you may be). ➟ But content without purpose is pointless. ➟ And content that drains you will leave you with little room to water others. Today, I want to share a smarter not harder content strategy way. I'm excited to walk you through how to create a content strategy that will check off the needs of your author and authorpreneur efforts but not leave you with little left on the other side. When women come together, beautiful things happen. But when women come together and collectively share their stories, emPowering things happen. Lisa Pinnock and the ladies she's collaborated with are living proof of it. She's supported dozens of women in becoming empowered to share their stories of triumph, hardship and perseverance. And, not only did the women she supported walk away stronger, they walked away authors in one of two beautiful anthologies called Uncover Your Light. I get cold chills thinking about it, knowing the emPact these women and these books are having. On International Women's Day, I couldn't imagine a better guest for the podcast than Lisa, especially since today is the release of her newest book, We Rise in Power. When I was a little kid, I was filled with questions. So much so, actually, that I remember my parents being frustrated one day in front of my grandma and she asked them how I was going to learn if I didn't ask questions. Grandma may have been a proponent of inbound marketing before it was a thing! The truth is, she was right. People ask questions because they have interest and their interest can be deepened if they find the answers out by trusted sources that deepen their interest and build loyalty. That's what inbound marketing is at its core, and that's what I'm digging into on today's episode of The emPowered Author Podcast. Inbound marketing is a strategy to draw the right people to the right people. It's how your ideal target reader or client uncovers you. They have questions and you offer answers. Knowing their questions will help you formulate the right answers in a way that they are searching so that when they go looking for answers, you appear. It's that simple! If you'd like help, I'm here. Stop looking for the change; become it. It's become a thread in my life for probably over a decade now when I began writing Color Today Pretty. It's been a cornerstone to how I see my personal life and interactions with others. But when I had the opportunity to read Self-Elected by lisa wise, I realized that it is a responsibility of business owners to… actually, it's a privilege. lisa is the owner of a successful suite of property management businesses in the DC area, but as with most people, behind the person is a story that shaped her story. lisa experienced a childhood that was short on housing and security, and instead of continuously looking for it, she found it and now helps others found it too. She became the change the world needed… she needed. And her businesses are built from it, serving people and communities along the way. I'm so excited to welcome you into a meaningful conversation lisa and I had about emPact… specifically the emPact each one of us has on the world, on business and with books. I've had the pleasure of reading her book, creating her book marketing plan, supporting her initiatives and more. But beyond any emPact I've been able to impart on her, she's the one who's left an emPact on me. Want to hear why? Join us for a conversation that I am confident will leave you ready to self-elect.Marketing should emPower you, not be the bane of your existence. I don't know about you, but when people start using words I haven't a clue what they mean I shut down. Life is hectic enough; no need to add words to it that make no sense or lack context unless… they matter. Unless they are game-changing. Unless someone takes a moment to break down not only what it means but why I should care in the process. Then, those words become committed to memory and I can take action from them. That is what happened to me when I uncovered inbound marketing… and it's what I hope happens for you on this episode of The emPowered Author Podcast when I share the ins and outs of inbound marketing and why it is important for authors to leverage to attract their target readers. To sell books requires people to know about them. To ensure the right people know about them, you need to know who your target audience is and where they go for trusted info. Then, you need a plan to be seen as a trusted source so you can be visible there. It sounds simple and it can be as long as you don't give up on doing it. It needs a plan and it needs commitment to the plan. That's where the fireworks happen. For many authors, this is either the exciting part of book marketing or the terrifying part. If it excites you, fantastic! If it terrifies you, you aren't alone. Remember that it's selfish if you don't share, but when you do make sure it's about them, not you. The best visibility is the type that is meant to help someone in the process. Don't write a book in silence. Don't launch a book and never talk about it. Don't create a business and let worry hold you back from telling anyone that you can support their needs. Instead, be the author who is proud that you are writing something that the world will soon fall in love with. Be the author who let's people in on your journey and invites them to help you. Be the author who wants to help people by making their lives a bit easier with your business. That's the author who is making an emPact. And, author friend, that's you. On this episode of The emPowered Author Podcast, I share the three key elements you need to create a visibility plan and make it happen. If we could help you plan your visibility efforts, let's chat. I 100% believe that divine appointments happen daily, and my meeting Shannon Carroll is proof of it.✔️ We were both at the same writer's retreat.✔️ We had some overlapping connections.✔️ Our paths crossed one morning which began a conversation that would turn into not just amazing author connections but a deep friendship too.✔️ And, on top of it all, a diagnosis I was newly navigating had similarities to what her husband had experienced and they wrote a book about it.This connection was destined for emPact on so many levels from the very beginning however, it required an openness for learning, feedback and growth to bring it all together. Shannon Carroll is the co-author of the beautiful book, One Thing Remains. I've had the pleasure of reading her book, creating her marketing plan, conducting a VIP Day and more. And while we discuss the ins and outs of all of this on today's episode, my hope is that you walk away realizing that we never know what the next moment offers. In her story, a next moment created a terrifying situation. And then, years later, a next moment created our friendship. Here are some of my favorite highlights from this episode: Learn how Shannon and I met, and how our lives became interwoven. This is a living, breathing example of how we are all just 1-2 degrees away from the people who need us most. (1:13)Shannon shares her family's story and what it was like for her husband to unexpectedly become impacted by amnesia. (4:28)After experiencing such a traumatic occurrence, Shannon shares that her family has learned from it. (12:35)During a planning meeting with Shannon, I undercovered the emPact of “why.” We discuss how asking why questions led Shannon to re-evaluate her marketing efforts and the churn she was doing. (15:28)When working with Shannon, I noticed she was doing a lot but wasn't sure if it was reaping the rewards. We discuss how emPact (and many times money) can be an indicator of if something is working. (19:06)Shannon shares some of her favorite take-aways working with the emPower PR Group and how it has positioned her for success. How many hats do you have to wear to make your author emPact? ⇢You have a writer hat. And, you are likely comfy with that one. I mean, you have to write a book to make a book happen.⇢You have your author hat. Most authors learn the ins and outs of authorship. We know that to become an author requires us to publish a book and all. ⇢And, you have an authorpreneur hat, too. But authorpreneurship isn't something every author realizes that they have signed up for. (And I promise you that if you are writing a book and you want people to buy it, you are an authorpreneur.)During a previous livestream that Jennifer Crosswhite and I host on Wednesdays, we discussed insights into authorpreneurship and what it would take for authors to make this their year to own the authorpreneur hat. I'm excited to invite you into that conversation on this episode of The emPowered Author Podcast. If we could help you plan for a successful year ahead (or book launch ahead), let's chat. You've written a book. Now what? This is a question many ask me and while today's episode will offer some helpful tips on your next steps, I want to start by sharing what you shouldn't do. ⇏ Don't keep them in a box in your basement to collect dust and mildew (or get impacted by an air conditioner leak… ahem, I know this from personal experience).⇏ Don't think they will sell themselves. (Friends, nothing will do that. Promise.) ⇏ Don't try to manifest it's success. (Believe me, I sure do love some manifestation, but book success requires a manifest partner in the deal… and it's called taking action.)⇏ Don't forget about it. (It's not a mistake you made that needs to be distanced from. It's important and should be remembered.)⇏ Don't think you've lost your window of opportunity. (Books don't have a shelf-life and you can breathe life into them whenever you're ready.)⇏ Don't hold back and opt to not tell anyone about your success. (To sell your books, you have to talk about them. Period!)On today's episode of The emPowered Author Podcast, I'm joined again by my friend Jennifer Crosswhite and, together, we offer up many tips on how to plan to sell books this year! During the pandemic, so many of us found ourselves contemplating what our dreams were and the path we were taking to make them happen. I've heard from many authors, time and time again, that the book that they would one day write moved up on the priority list. I have had the pleasure of meeting an author who wrote reflections during that time and published an amazing book from it. I just spoke to an author who used the time to put his life story on paper. And, today you'll hear from a dear friend of mine, Elisabeth Swan, who found herself reflecting openly through LinkedIn during this time, only to have her followers start asking about a book that she was going to write and didn't know was needed. Guess what… that book will be coming out this year! Elisabeth Swan is an author we've had the pleasure of working with in various ways, and today we dig into the value of feedback, how you can create demand for a book while you are crafting it, why the blog to book concept never goes out of style, and how collaboration is the name of the game. Ready. Set. Launch! Launching a book may feel a bit like launching a rocket. There's stress and planning. Momentum builds. It takes off and you hold your breath to see if the rocket will make it to outerspace safely, and only then can you find your breath again. I had the pleasure of watching a rocket launch a few years ago, and it was stressful. I've also had the pleasure of personally launching 3 books and supporting countless other authors launch theirs. And, they too are stressful. But stress doesn't have to be synonymous with launch. In fact, when well planned, they can actually be really fun. On this episode, I'm excited to share some of my favorite book launch insights with you. I'm on a quest for being able to better define emPact… and I'm talking about the emPact that we have around here that is spelled a bit differently. This emPact has greater… well… emPact. emPact happens when people are vulnerable, when we let down our guard and be honest with ourselves in a way that not just changes us but changes others. Every author has the potential to make their author emPact, and Katie Anderson is proof of it. Katie's book, Learning to Lead, Leading to Learn, highlights how real emPact happens when we are vulnerable… because that's where true learning happens. I've had the pleasure of supporting Katie for several years, and helping her and her book make an emPact.Marketing should emPower you, not be the bane of your existence. Would you go on a trip to a new destination without a map? You may be up for that challenge but I know I'd get lost. Would you attempt to put together a piece of IKEA furniture without the directions? If you've done it a time or two before maybe not, but I'd rather get it done than see how long it would take me to do it without directions. What about finish school without a plan? Dive into a career without a plan? Build a home without a plan? Do I need to go on? Plans are amazing, when they put you on a path. That's what they are there for, right? Plans are door opener when you have a focused vision and you are given the green light to run with it. Plans are game-changing when you can use them to guide your moves and indicate what is worth your energy and what isn't. As with many things in life, some social platforms are here for a season. Others stick around for decades. During this season of The emPowered Author Podcast, I have been highlighting the platforms that have had longevity and purpose for authors to consider, and Twitter is one of them. It's never been my platform of choice, mainly because of its belief that less is more (and that's hard for me over here!) but it's jam-packed with value for writers, authors and authorpreneurs. And, it may be a good fit for you too. Visit our website to download The Author's Guide to the Social Dilemma where you can follow along, take notes and uncover how you are going to tackle social. Also, social media is a specialty of ours. We love offering digital presence audits as well as helping authors update their social media infrastructure, create content pillars and a social plan, and even develop graphics and content accordingly. If you could use that help, reach out.Marketing should emPower you, not be the bane of your existence. (I see you, author... and I know that you likely despise the word and all that comes with it!) Does the camera make your hands sweat and your voice crack or do you get a rush of adrenaline and ideas right when you hit record? I've likely not found as polarizing of viewpoints with authors outside of talking about the differing feelings of sharing a message through the written word and through the spoken word. Some love it and many despise it. But most will agree that it's not going away and its here to stay. Video is important in message sharing, which is why on this episode of The emPowered Author Podcast, we are taking about YouTube. It is a social platform that is integrated on other social platforms… and it also serves another purpose. It's a search engine. You may go to Google for info. But when you are looking for how-to, YouTube is top of the list. It's not the place people go to for mindless scrolling. Facebook and Instagram have that covered. However when people come to YouTube, they are on a mission. My goal today is to help make you that mission. Visit our website to download The Author's Guide to the Social Dilemma where you can follow along, take notes and uncover how you are going to tackle social. On this week's Dream Business Radio Show, I interview Stephanie Feger, owner and chief strategist of the emPower PR Group. This week's guest Stephanie Feger uses a capsule podcast strategy, and it's working like a charm! Stephanie's approach of hyper-specific and thoroughly planned out episodes and seasons to teach and engage current and future clients is exactly the kind of use case we want to see for audience engagement podcasts. Stephanie is also a book marketing strategist and coach for nonfiction authors; she is an author herself, and a keynote speaker. She hosts “The emPowered Author: A Marketing Podcast for Nonfiction Authors” that empowers authors to take their important message and share it with those who desperately need it. We're also talking about content planning strategies and the value of presentation and speaking skills. Tune in to hear Stephanie and I explore: When you come across a hurdle or don't know what you're doing, just try something. Too many times we get caught up on the outcome, when we should be focusing on the action. The outcome will come! But the action will help you get there. The emPower PR Group is a marketing, coaching and support business for nonfiction authors, and its supporting podcast is a part of the business strategy. Each season is based on the type of marketing work they do, and is in alignment with an element that an author may or may not need. It's meant to add value to the people who are thinking about working with emPower PR. Stephanie uses the emPower Podcast in the onboarding process. If a client shows interest in a specific tool or strategy, she refers them to the season of the podcast that covers that strategy. That way, the client grasps an idea of the technical side of things that Stephanie and her team handles, and they can talk about the client's work. Stephanie doesn't get hung up on metrics like downloads. The way she sees it, the success of her show shows itself in her business, which has almost tripled in growth over the year. Those numbers are much more meaningful than downloads, especially for a business podcast. If you don't enjoy it, don't do it, Stephanie advises. People will hear it in your voice, in the content you put out. Even if you have a great message, people won't want to listen if they can hear that you're not into it. The best podcasts are relational, not transactional. Question of the Week: Q: How do ads work in podcasts? A: Lots of podcasts have ads. They can be for your own products and services. For sponsors, they can be ad swaps or promotional exchanges with other podcasters. Whatever the content of your ad, you have to make a few decisions about it. Do you want ads to be baked in as a permanent part of the episode? Or do you want them to be dynamically inserted and subject to change at a later date? Dynamic ads that can be changed later are more popular and, on balance, better for you as a podcast owner. Your podcast host should let you know if you have that capability. For both permanent and dynamic ads, you can have them either be pre-produced and ready to go and be inserted, or host read. Don't break what isn't broken. I think too many times we opt to go after the newest fad in marketing without remembering that there are evergreen and timeless strategies that work, are so effective, and are memorable beyond belief. For this episode, Stephanie Feger is joined by Cathy Fyock, a book coach, who has a simple but extremely effective strategy to help her authors create conversations everywhere. Her "Ask Me About My Book" button has been game-changing for many authors, Stephanie included. The best marketing efforts lead to meaningful conversations. "There are things you can't control, but you can allow yourself to find a deeper level of happiness, success, and fulfillment by shifting your perspective." Stephanie Feger As social beings, we must acknowledge that we need to seek perspective while interacting and forming relationships. By having an open mind and a willingness to learn, we get to understand ourselves and others better. This is according to our guest today, Stephanie Feger, who believes that people need perspective to guide their actions. Throughout her life, Stephanie Feger has been in the business of empowering people and helping others uncover the power to their success. However, it was a dream that left her with the charge to reframe how she saw her own life and encourage others to do the same. [4:54] I had every intention to retire from the company I was working at for a decade, and through a serendipitous series of events, someone charged me with doing something different. [5:02] I had been working in PR marketing for 15 years, so I just expected that would be what I always did, but we were impacted by a corporate layoff, which was the best thing for me. [5:32] I decided to publish this book I had been writing that my friend charged me to continue doing, titled "Color Today Pretty," and has absolutely nothing to do with PR and marketing. [6:03] The essence of the "Color Today Pretty" movement is all about re-evaluating success and helping women and men figure out how to find balance and have a truly fulfilled life. [6:25] I had the opportunity to take this love for perspective, writing, authorship, and empowerment and blend it with marketing and PR to help authors, nonfiction authors specifically spread their words and help their books and messages reach those who want them and will buy them. [7:06] I founded the Empower PR group, and I feel blessed to help all different types of nonfiction authors do that. [7:30] Perspective isn't limited to personal life; rather, it has extensions in both personal and professional, and when you lead a life with perspective, it's crazy how what success looks like can be redefined. [7:49] Perspective is so important, and even when something's so miniscule, if you have perspective, you can actually see deeper levels of happiness that come from it. [9:13] I have found that writing a book is one thing, and marketing is completely another thing. [11:11] As you're writing the book, it takes so much of you to get it out. It is such a vulnerable experience that you get exhausted and overwhelmed by the process. [11:28] The essence of the emPower PR group is built on empowerment, and I have kind of two ways I do it. There is the done with you, which is a collaborative process, and then there's the done for you. [11:53] The emPower PR group is built on the done with your process because I find that some of the most successful authors are the ones that realize they need to learn marketing. [12:07] It is very important to me that authors are empowered with that knowledge because for a lot of authors their investment is very [12:31] Since I've been there and understand, I'm very organized and don't believe in moving without a strategy. [12:53] You do not want your book to be a want but a need because people budget for needs, which means your book automatically becomes something already in their budget. [14:57] You have to take a step back, look through the lens of perspective, and figure out how you are fulfilling a solution for someone in a way that they need it, want it, and will buy it. [15:40] Don't even try to be something for everybody; rather, focus on the people that need you and will be unapologetically directed towards them, then you're going to make a big difference there. [16:44] Commercial break. [17:40] You can't control things, but you can allow yourself to find a deeper level of happiness, success, and fulfillment by shifting your perspective. [20:55] I do think that life can happen for a purpose and with purpose. [21:25] When you sit back and reflect on what is happening, you don't have to be okay with what has happened, but you do get the opportunity to choose how you react and respond to it. [21:29] What's beautiful about perspective is every moment you get to choose it, so when you're dealing with a hardship, take a moment, feel that grief and then make the conscious decision not to let that define you. [22:19] From our perspective standpoint, when you talk business, perspective can drive strategy, which should lead your tactics. [22:55] Just because we don't see things doesn't mean it's not happening, but it all boils back to perspective. [27:45] In a world that can be overwhelming and exhausting, I challenge you not to give up, don't give in, don't give way but always give value because it will always come back to you. The emPowered Author: A Marketing Podcast for Nonfiction Authors
Like many authors, Stephanie Feger didn't set out with the plan of writing a book and building a business. To be honest, writing a book was never even a thought in her mind. But life had a plan for her, and it would be one that would empower her to empower others in ways she never imagined. Upon the release of her first book, Color Today Pretty: An Inspirational Guide to Living a Life in Perspective, Stephanie stumbled upon the opportunity to merge her love for writing books with her skillset in marketing, public relations and communications. She had plans to empower people in other ways, but she saw a need from people who had amazing messages to share but unsure how to share them and to whom, so she decided that her calling was to support nonfiction authors to spread their important messages to those who need them most. Her business, the emPower PR Group, was formed and she was blessed with the opportunity to empower nonfiction authors with laser-focused marketing strategies and tactics to help them write books that sell, promote their books to those who need and want them most, and build a meaningful business from a message that is empowering. Early in my entrepreneurship journey, I was faced with an interesting dilemma. I knew my target audience, but I realized that within that audience was two niches. I had one group that valued my product, begging me to customize it for their needs. And they were willing to buy it no matter the cost. I had another group that followed my work and showed immense interest in my product, but they couldn't see investing in my product. Instead, they wanted to learn how to make one themselves. They valued my product, but they didn't have the budget -- or didn't see the need to invest in it. I learned then that there are two subsets of most audiences -- those that value time over money and those that value money over time. As a marketer, I've learned the importance of creating offerings -- whether that's products or services -- that cater to each of these niches within your target audience. Throughout her life, Stephanie Feger's been in the business of empowering people. She's empowered her teams to collective success. She's empowered individuals, groups and organizations to embrace perspective as a tool for deeper satisfaction and personal and professional accomplishments. And she's empowered authors, small business owners and entrepreneurs with communications and marketing strategies to help them reach their goals. Stephanie Feger has always believed that we hold the power to our own success, and she's determined to help others uncover that power. However, it was a dream — literally — that left her with the charge to reframe how she saw her own life and encourage others to do the same. That dream pushed her to redefine her own success, re-evaluate her personal goals and turn her “what-ifs” into “why-nots.” After working in the communications and marketing industry for more than 15 years, Stephanie decided to merge her unique expertise with her life's passions so she could empower people in many ways, including empowering those who sought to empower others. I have been doing the 21-Day Meditation Experience with Oprah and Deepak Chopra. I know, right? Two of the best to learn meditation from. It’s an app that encourages a daily practice of meditation to create a lifelong habit. Oprah opens each practice with insight on why this meditation will be important for your life. Day 7, entitled “Obstacles to Grace Melt Away,” she opens with this:“When you feel struggle, pause, try to take a step back, give yourself a moment’s time to find your center. That struggle is a gift, a whisper, it is your graceful, true self, tapping you on the shoulder a little bit trying to remind you, ever so gently, to look again. Because you always get to choose, do you react to an obstacle as a negative or do you embrace it as an opportunity to respond with the open-hearted knowledge that all will be well?”Deepak, I feel like it’s okay to call him by his first name just like we do Oprah, right? Then walks you through the meditation practice. On this particular day he explains:“Once we start the practice of gratitude, our perspective opens up. We start to see how the universe generously supports us in countless ways. From this shift in perception optimism naturally emerges, because the ups and downs of daily existence, hale beside the infinite generosity of nature just as a candle fades in the noon day sun.”I love that visual – our problems can be the candle, but if your sunlight, aka your gratitude for life, is shining so brightly, you won’t even be able to see the candle. But when your world is dim, sometimes all you can see is that flame. It’s funny how making a change in something as small as perspective can define how we view our entire life. Finally, Oprah closes the episode by sharing: “There is a gift in every moment, good or bad. Allow the wisdom of difficulty to speak to you and lead you to where your life truly wants to go.”When she puts it that way, to me those obstacles become freeing. When you allow those things to happen, it is just life/ the universe/ God correcting you where it wants you to go.This reminds me of a quote I saw recently from musical composer Truman Fisher, he said, “The pause is as important as the note.”I am so guilty of wanting to get to that next note, sometimes before I’ve even finished playing the current note. The notes are where I shine, the notes are what I am proud of, and the notes give me joy. But why can’t those pauses fill us in the same way? It is opposite of what our society preaches, being busy is glorified and rest is lazy. But think of how much goodness we miss, by not enjoying the pause, because we mistook it to be an obstacle.I’m so excited for you to hear the experts I’ve interviewed for Season Four.My interest in meditation grew after my conversation with Dr. Amanda O’Bryan and she shares mind-blowing meditation techniques with us. Stephanie Feger also preaches the importance of perspective as she encourages you to “color today pretty.”Maybe you will find inspiration from the dynamic female duos in Kelsey & Lauren, harvesting seeds in women entrepreneurs or Katie & Kari teaching us all how to turn our homes into sanctuaries.I went straight to the horse's mouth for my interview with Tyler Lloyd from LOU CBD. I wanted to find out all about the latest CBD craze. I also talked to Josh Johnson, aka The Kentucky Gent, about how he gets to travel the world, eat all the food, and call it work. And I know you will love the stories of blood, sweat, and tears that will light you on fire for your dreams when you hear the bravery from Brianna Rooney, Jenna Ahern and Maizie Clarke. These ladies are doing big things, and I’m blown away and how they juggle all the hats they wear.Whichever episode becomes your favorite, I hope we can all find a place in life that allow us to celebrate the notes AND the rests. That we can remember to take time to meditate, breath and --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/selfishthepodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/selfishthepodcast/support
Stephanie Feger is a passionate communicator who believes that a shift in perspective can help people live truly fulfilling lives. After working in the public relations and marketing industry for over 15 years, she realized that happiness isn't found in what society deems important and felt a calling to help others reach their fullest potential while embracing all that life has to offer. Now an author, professional speaker, motivational blogger, book publicist, and home decor business owner, Stephanie connects her passion for embracing creativity with her dedication to helping others live life in perspective. In her recently published book, Color Today Pretty: An Inspirational Guide to Living a Life in Perspective, Stephanie invites others to change their lives by finding perspective from within. She has a wonderful message to share with all of us as we begin to move into 2019, and for those in the accounting profession, as we move into that busy season (although I prefer to call it the opportunity season). What Does it Mean to Color Today Pretty? The idea of “Color Today Pretty” came to Stephanie in a dream, and it’s since become her life purpose and, really, a movement. In the dream, Stephanie played the role of a female Simon Cowell on America’s Got Talent – essentially, the person that stands between someone's dreams and their reality. A contestant walked up and started painting, and it was just awful. She told the young boy to give up and get a job, but he didn’t react by getting sad or angry like most people on the show. “Instead, he took his canvas, he brought it over to me, and he gifted me with a smile, and he said, ‘That's okay. I just want you to go color something pretty today.’” “I realized that he had a choice. You know, there's a lot of ways to get from point A to point B in life. And I was sitting here thinking that I stood in between his ability to have this dream make it a reality, but this young kid taught me something different,” Stephanie says. “What I realized at that moment is he couldn't control my reaction. He couldn't control if I was going to help him reach his dream, but he could control his reactions and his responses to what happened in life to him. He decided to color that day pretty, to take that moment and make it purposeful and meaningful. And he wasn't going to let me stop him.” From that moment, Stephanie shifted her lens on life and learned to find beauty in the mundane – and she believes that if you can embrace this mentality, too, you can do anything. One of the things I enjoy about the book is that it’s not coming from the perspective of "You know, I've got life figured out and here’s how you do it." Instead, it's more of a journey through what Stephanie has experienced, showing how shifting her perspective has allowed her to take some of the most difficult moments in her life and use them to grow instead of hinder her growth. “There is a way for people to focus on the things that matter. But, sometimes, we have to go through an acceptance process to get there, to be able to see through the right lens, to be able to focus our spectacles, per se, and really see that, at the end of the day, the only thing we can control in life is ourselves.” Resources: Learn more at http://colortodaypretty.com Color Today Pretty: An Inspirational Guide to Living a Life in Perspective Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/colortodaypretty Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/colortodaypretty/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephanie-feger/ -- Change Your Mindset is produced by Podcast Masters Learn more about your ad choices.
