What's the real reason you want to write a book? If your answer doesn't connect directly to your business goals, you may be missing the mark. In this episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, Peter sits down with Cathy Fyock, a book strategist who helps authors write the right book—the one that aligns with their business, audience, and long-term strategy. Cathy shares why writing a book should never be step one. Instead, authors must start with a solid strategy: What do you want the book to do for your business? Who exactly are you writing it for? How will you leverage it to create opportunity, revenue, or credibility? We explore the importance of aligning your book's content and audience with your current business model. Cathy also explains why writing for “everyone” is a mistake, and why serving a clearly defined niche can lead to powerful results—even if it feels narrow. If you've ever wrestled with the choice between self-publishing, hybrid, or traditional publishing, Cathy breaks down the pros and cons of each. Her recommendation? Own your IP, own your margins, and stay in control. You'll also hear surprising insights about how some authors make more from not selling books—using them as a powerful sales tool to land clients, speaking gigs, and consulting contracts. Three Key Takeaways: • Start with strategy, not writing. A successful book begins with clear goals, a defined audience, and alignment with your business model—not just a blank page and good intentions. • Niche focus drives greater impact. Writing for a well-defined, specific audience builds credibility and creates stronger results than trying to appeal to everyone. • Books are business tools, not just products. The real ROI often comes not from book sales, but from using the book to generate leads, secure speaking engagements, or land high-value clients. If you found value in the strategic insights shared in this episode, you won't want to miss our conversation with Becky Robinson: "Writing a Book As an Extension of Your Business." Becky, the founder and CEO of Weaving Influence, delves into how authors can seamlessly integrate their books into their broader business strategies. She shares practical advice on launching a book, building a lasting platform, and ensuring your message reaches the right audience over time. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to amplify their thought leadership and make their book a cornerstone of their business growth.

How do women conform to or challenge the traditional “mom script”? If you're a mom, what can you do to break the “cultural glass ceiling” to be yourself and a great parent, all without having to force yourself into a mom mold that doesn't fit you? Melissa is like a great friend, honest and wise and funny, telling you about her life and asking you to reflect on yours. This book is a great purchase for moms in every stage of life.” – Maureen Turner Carey, Librarian, Austin, Texas “In her book, Melissa shows us that motherhood does not have to be a pause or an end to your pre-child self. Have you ever thought about writing a book to codify what your business does, and what it stands for? And once you do, how long should you work to promote that book after it hits the shelves? To discuss these questions and more, I've invited Becky Robinson to join me for this episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership. Becky is the Founder and CEO of Weaving Influence where she works with business book authors to build their platform and grow the reach of their work. Additionally, Becky has become her own client having authored Reach: Create the Biggest Possible Audience for Your Message, Book or Cause. Our conversation begins with the difficult topic of measuring the ROI of a business book. Becky shares how that equation held her back from starting a book - until the pandemic hit. With some extra time, she started the journey, seeking to have her book launch coincide with the ten year anniversary of her business. Launching a book and running a company that specializes in the book publishing field gave Becky aunique perspective. Becky discusses some of the methods she used to get her book into the world, including pushing for100 Amazon reviews in the first month. To accomplish this, she sent 400 physical copies of the book to friends, colleagues, and anyone who would get value from it. She explains how a physical copy with a personalized note and signature has a far higher return than simply emailing a PDF. The journey of writing the book forced some additional clarity around the content Becky has used for years. She explains how she developed the four commitments, and defined the concept of "reach" in thought leadership publishing. In addition, she shares the importance of defining various terms, and the iterations authors go through in determining title and subtitle before landing on a final version. If you're planning to write a book, have a book coming out, or are out there supporting one - this episode is trove of advice that can help you reach your widest audience! Three Key Takeaways: * Online reviews are important for new books. They provide social "proof" of your insights and help create * Your book can't be for everyone. You'll need to focus on the people that need your book right now. * Don't view book marketing as a project with an end date. It is a life-long commitment.

So many writers say they write to figure out what they believe or make sense of a situation. Ly Tran says she writes to overcome self-doubt and to celebrate her voice. More than that, she says her words connect her to others, and the best part of putting a book in the world is the feedback she gets from readers who say that her story touched them in a deep and meaningful way. In the latest episode of the Make Meaning Podcast, host Lynne Golodner interviews Ly Tran about her memoir, House of Sticks, which took six years to write after landing a contract simply by the strength of her pages as presented to a professor. Ly came to America at the age of 3, a Vietnamese refugee who was a sweatshop worker as a child and spent a decade failing school as her vision deteriorated. Literature was her only refuge, holding books close to her face to commune with characters. With the gift of a pair of contacts at high school graduation, she eventually made it to Columbia University, where instructors saw her gifts and encouraged her to write her incredible story. In this episode, Lynne and Ly discuss: Her parents' response to her truth-telling: “You do what you need to do.” Finding identity in food and language Embodying multiple conflicting identities The myth of “the American dream” Realizing that she's not like other kids and learning to find her own way How books can be our salvation Code-switching How to honor family and values while assimilating Her next book, a historical novel about the Tru'ng Sisters The need for strong Asian-American voices Links and Resources: The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison The Model Minority Myth My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante Columbia University Writers in New York at NYU Fierce Attachments by Vivian Gornick Maps to Anywhere by Bernard Cooper Find Ly Tran: Website Facebook Twitter Instagram Coming up next on the Make Meaning Podcast: Lynne interviews Becky Robinson, founder of Weaving Influence and author of Reach: Create the biggest possible audience for your message, book, or cause.

Building an online presence can feel “salesy” at times.. But Weaving Influence CEO and author Becky Robinson strives to flip the script toward social media marketing. It doesn't have to feel like you're pedaling a product. Instead, treat it as an act of service to the world. Tune in to this new episode of The Conscious Marketer podcast — Expanding Your Reach: How to drive social media momentum for your message, book, or cause with Becky Robinson. Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ Becky Robinson shares her blog's humble beginnings. Even then, she aimed to help authors create influence in the world through their ideas. ✔️ The attitude of the author can affect sales. The product value isn't everything. Becky Robinson also explains the significance of authors building online connections in getting their desired results. ✔️ The publisher doesn't do the marketing. Authors tend to juggle promoting their products while doing final edits. Get preparations done before signing the contract so you can focus on your campaigns. ✔️ A large permission-based email list is a metric for success. If people are willing to let you in their inbox, that means they're interested in your work. Form connections with those who align with your content, and drop valuable messages regularly. ✔️ The commitment to online marketing creates the biggest possible impact. Be active on social media for a wider reach. ✔️ Becky Robinson compares social media marketing to planting trees. You may not be the one who enjoys the fruit of your creation. But do it in faith that it could make a difference to a generation beyond your lifetime. ✔️ Building an online presence needs time and patience. Create a marketing strategy that brings you joy and is sustainable. A good place to start is to write a meaningful post every two weeks. ✔️ Break through the noise by being yourself. Amplify your purpose, and stand out from the crowd. Also, draw in your true audience by identifying your core topics and staying consistent.
