With water scarcity concerns rising, we must look at what can be done at saving potable water use. By treating and reusing lightly contaminated greywater at both the residential and commercial level, there is the potential to save millions of gallons of potable water use each year. Decentralized greywater treatment can be implemented into new builds across the United States to start this mission of saving water up to 35% per home. One home alone can save more than 12,000 gallons of potable water usage in one year, giving relief to infrastructure, saving energy for pumping water and reducing consumption. Hydraloop is a patent device that has been installed all over the world, holding NSF 350 certification as well as UL-979 and IAPMO. 4 Learning Objectives: 1. Understand the types of water in the home. 2. Learn about technology used to treat lightly contaminated greywater. 3. Understand implementation of greywater treatment into the home. 4. Identify potential water savings by getting the consumer involved, ultimately leading to savings in infrastructure, density and energy.

Interview with Steffany Boldrini, Principal at Monte Carlo Real Estate Investments. We'll be discussing the following: ✅ Market overview and outlook ✅ Investing in car washes and self storage ✅ Tips and strategies for investing About Steffany: Steffany is a Principal with Monte Carlo Real Estate Investments, LLC She began her commercial real estate investing career in her spare time by taking on a mentorship program with an experienced retail real estate investor who gave her an extremely valuable early education in the world of commercial real estate. It was through this mentorship that Steffany began to make offers on both retail and office properties and began her journey as a fully-fledged real estate investor. Through her exposure to multiple real estate asset classes via her mentor, and due to the volatility and “bubble-like” state which many real estate investors have noticed in a number of major markets, Steffany began to explore other asset classes in which she could invest. Steffany first heard about the self-storage asset class while listening to a podcast, and decided to take a closer look. During her initial investigation, Steffany found that this asset class suited her desire for long-term passive income without high levels of maintenance or management, allowing her to gain both freedom of time and freedom of money in the future. Even more importantly, self-storage could also provide an asset class which is, for all intents and purposes, “recession-resistant”. To give back to the community, Steffany hosts the “Commercial Real Estate Investing from A-Z” podcast. The show focuses on investing in retail, office, industrial, and self-storage properties. Why is the future of the grid distributed? Customers want control over the cost of energy. They also want reliability and choice. Additionally, access to cost-efficient energy is a business necessity. These reasons combined with new lower-cost technology are the driving force behind capital spending for Distributed Energy Resources ( DERs). According to a Wood Mackenzie report, DER capacity will reach 387 gigawatts by 2025, propelled by $110 billion in investments such as battery storage, electric vehicle infrastructure, and grid-interactive appliance sales. It's shaping up to be a pretty big trend in the future, says Doug Sansom, Director of DER Sales for NRG. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Why the future of the grid is distributed [2:52] What is driving the need for DERs? [4:00] A day in the life of a customer dispatching DERs [6:38] 5 questions customers seeking answers should ask [8:55] A la carte purchasing of energy and services vs hiring a management company [12:02] What NRG is doing to bring bundled integration solutions to the market [14:09] What type of customer would a bundled approach work for? [15:53] What we'll be talking about 5 years from now [19:42] 5 questions to ask when you're looking for a supply partner Doug explains that there are five questions a customer who is seeking answers about partnering with a sophisticated load manager should ask themselves: How large is the cost of energy relative to the rest of the business's cost structure? Is the business flexible enough to reduce energy during peak demand periods? What's the cost of the business if a power outage happens during operations? Does the business have resources dedicated to responding to the energy market in managing sustainable resources of supply? What's the real cost of managing multiple energy providers versus working with a single sophisticated provider? Listen to this episode for more in-depth coverage of these questions and how they may pertain to you and your business. What is driving the need for Distributed Energy Resources? It's a combination of different needs. To arrange for the growth and expansion of new technologies, the grid is going to have to become more distributed. What customer needs and pain points are creating the demand for this distributed grid and increase in DER deployment? We know from experience that customers are focused on their operational needs more so than just energy itself. They see energy as a means to an end and they want DERs to help them overcome several challenges such as managing the cost of energy in the face of dynamic rate determinants, time of use, demand charges, coincident peak demand charges, et cetera. Customers also want DERs to help them achieve sustainability goals while assuring that their power will always be there when they need it. All of this translates to the freedom to access energy on their terms at a cost-efficient rate when they need it. Looking into the future… what will we be talking about in 5 years? Looking at how far the market has come in the last 36 months shows a dramatic transformation. This is what Doug's had to say about what's to come from his perspective and experience related to this concept. “Energy is on a product life cycle and I personally believe that technology will continue to drive the product life cycle of energy. The race to develop more responsive energy solutions will be fueled by data, decentralization of the grid and de-carbonization. Those three have really been driving this macro trend in our energy industry now for some time. But I think we'll see a lot more evidence of that as it continues to expand through the market. Success in the future looks like delivering energy from a resource the customer wants when they want It with the assurance that the energy will be there anytime they want it.” Resources & People Mentioned Wood Mackenzie report on DER growth Doug's company, NRG Connect with Doug Sansom On Linkedin Hugh Douglas Sansom, Director, DER Sales for NRG ‘Doug' currently serves as Director, DER Sales for NRG. Episode Summary In this episode of Solar Maverick, David Buckner recounts how and why he left the world of finance to start Solar Energy Systems, a full-service solar energy company that has become a leader in the Northeastern solar market. David and Benoy talk about specialization in the solar industry, how to grow as a company in an evolving industry, and what they both love about the solar market. Benoy Thanjan Benoy Thanjan is the Founder and CEO of Reneu Energy, as well as an advisor for several solar startup companies. Reneu Energy is a premier international solar energy consulting firm and developer, and the company focuses on developing commercial and industrial solar, as well as utility-scale solar plus storage projects. The company also sources financing for solar projects and hedges both energy and environmental commodities. Reneu Energy has brokered $27 million in environmental commodity transactions. He originated SREC trades with buyers and co-developed their SREC monetization and hedging strategy with the senior management of SolarCity, to move into the east coast markets. Benoy also worked at Vanguard Energy Partners, Ridgewood Renewable Power, and Deloitte & Touche. David Buckner As a founding member of Solar Energy Systems (SES), David has been with the company since its inception in 1998. His first two years building SES were spent after-hours “moonlighting” on his day job. He’d been a government bonds broker for a Wall Street brokerage firm and enjoyed most of it, but yearned for more diversity in his daily activity, including time outside, and he discovered he loved being up on the roofs. So he quit his Wall Street gig in 2000 to dedicate everything to SES. Today as President, David does everything from meeting with clients and vendors to taking a delivery if no one is available or if he just needs some exercise. He thinks longevity in the solar industry is an asset: “I’ve seen many ups and downs as the industry has grown from a heavily subsidized start-up to what is increasingly becoming a mature space. I respect the effort it takes to organize people and get projects constructed. And I enjoy developing new opportunities, but it's really about executing for the clients who have already committed to working with us.” He believes that life is a team sport. David has a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Fordham University and is certified by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP). He was actually one of the first to take and pass the test back when NABCEP began testing in 2004. David has 5 bikes and 4 BMX scooters — he likes to take clunkers and put minimal cost and effort into making them rideable. Insights from this episode: Details on Solar Energy Systems’ early decision to focus on the commercial/industrial sector of the solar energy industry over the residential solar energy sector. Details on the challenges of installing solar panels in New York City. How to determine good business opportunities for Solar Energy Systems and how they take advantage of those opportunities. You all are busy, so if you don't have the time to listen, here are the key updates: Renewals for Conditional B&B, Short-Term Rental, and Special Use Permits: On Wednesday, October 16th, at 9 a.m. the Planning and Sustainable Land Use Committee will be considering a bill related to renewals for B&B, STR and Special Use permits. The big change that may be of particular concern is the change to the timing of renewal applications. Currently the law states: “Permit renewal applications shall be submitted to the department within ninety days prior to the permit expiration date…” The proposed bill would change that language to say: “Permit renewal applications shall be submitted to the department no later than sixty days prior to expiration of the permit, after which the department shall not accept any renewal applications.” That is a big change in policy that may catch a lot of people off guard. Maui County Real Property Tax: Real Property Tax Reform is back on the agenda for the Economic Development and Budget Committee on Thursday, October 17th, at 9 a.m. Some of the bigger changes we should all keep an eye on are proposed tiered tax rates for Owner-Occupied, Non-Owner-Occupied, Short Term Rental and Commercial Industrial classifications; changes to condominium reporting requirements; changes to classifications; and new dedications and tax benefits for long-term affordable rentals and long-term rentals. Draft EIS filed for EMI: Alexander & Baldwin and EMI have filed a draft Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed lease of water in the East Maui areas of Nahiku, Ke’anae, Honomanu, and Huelo. A statutory 45-day public review and comment period is now open and will continue through November 7, 2019. Those submitting comments should send them to the approving agency (Board of Land and Natural Resources, State of Hawaii, Mr. Ian Hirokawa, ian.c.hirokawa@hawaii.gov, 1151 Punchbowl Street, Honolulu, HI 96813) and copy the applicant and consultant (Wilson Okamoto Corporation, 1907 S. Beretania Street, Suite 400, Honolulu, HI 96826, Mr. Earl Matsukawa, AICP, waterleaseeis@wilsonokamoto.com). FHA Condo Rules: The new FHA Condo Rules go into effect on October 15th. The rule changes will make condominiums a more accessible option for homebuyers that rely on FHA financing. For more information, follow this link to a video from NAR. FY 2021 Mayor’s Community budget Meetings: Mayor Victorino is still holding community meetings throughout Maui County. The remaining meetings are: Molokai - 3:30 p.m., Monday, October 21st, at the Mitchell Pauole Community Center; Lanai - 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 22nd, at the Hale Kupuna O’ Lana’i; East Maui/Hana - 5:00 p.m., Monday, October 28th, at Helene Hall Maui Boards and Commissions: Applicants are being sought for 42 vacancies on Maui County boards, commissions, councils and committees. The application deadline is Nov. 15, 2019. Anyone interested in serving on a board or commission should first apply online at www.mauicounty.gov/Boards, or pick up a paper application in the County building.
