"Savarkar was a great rationalist. The surprising thing is how such a rationalist went completely off the rails in regard to other matters. His writing is full of villains and among the villains are the Buddha, all Buddhists, whom he considered hereditary traitors, Ashoka, Akbar, Tipu Sultan, and then Gandhiji. On the question of Godse and Apte there was no doubt that they were his acolytes, they were his worshippers. Sardar Patel said the problem was that once you create an atmosphere then you don't have to tell anybody to go and assassinate; he reads your lips. You just have to see the publications Savarkar was patronizing... They were only penning hatred and it was all centered on one man -- Gandhiji. Savarkar felt that the Marathas were the real legatees of the Mughal empire and then the damn outsiders, the British, slyly took over. The same thing happens in his own life . He thinks he is the heir to Lokmanya Tilak and then this outsider Gujrati comes and takes the whole prize away. This great disappointment in his life gets centered on one man and becomes hatred. Today, Gandhiji is a great inconvenience because he embodies Hinduism, the collective memory of our people. If Savarkar's line is pursued, then India will become a dismembered nation like Pakistan; society will be riven by hate. This eternal search for purity always ends in that. The difference between Indic religions like Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism from Semitic religions is that ours is an inner-directed search. Everything - pilgrimages, idol worship, mantras etc. is to aid this inner search. When you marry it to the State, religion becomes an instrument of the State. You only have to look at the Jewish religion when Gaza is to be bombed - it just becomes an instrument. Secularism is a way of keeping the purity of religion. It's not anti-religion. Keep religion and the State separate. That is why my book ends with this appeal - Save Hinduism from Hindutva" - Arun Shourie, author, 'The New Icon; Savarkar and the Facts' talks to Manjula Narayan on the Books & Authors podcast.

How Pathan Controversy is a reflection of deteriorating communalism structure in India. Ritesh Lakhi in conversation with Manimugdha Sharma.
Today's show focuses on the holiday we are celebrating here in the United States of American. Today is Thanksgiving Day. But, in my lifetime, I have seen the story of the first "thanksgiving" changed and massaged so as to completely ignore one of the most profound lessons learned in the early colonial days. We all know the story of the Pilgrims and the Mayflower and how the American Indians around Plymouth helped keep the colonists from starving. But, what is not told any longer was how that colony had to change their governance in order to survive. On the brink of extinction, Governor William Bradford brought the leadership together and decided to end their communalism (or as Bradford himself called it "communism"). In an effort to strip away the sins that follow with a love of material property, the colony decided to share everything equitably. They stored all food together and doled out identical portions to each family. As Godly as their intentions, this idea ignored a very basic human trait – we are all different, with unique talents and strengths. Soon, animosity began to creep into the colony. Young, strong men began to resent doing four times the work and getting the same reward as those who barely did anything. Women began to think of themselves as slaves to the communal chores. On the brink of extinction, they changed everything. They decided families would need to be on their own to make due for themselves. Land was doled out based on household size and after that, they were each to their own devices. And what a fantastic decision. As Bradford writes, "This had very good success, for it made all hands very industrious." In fact, "much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been" and productivity increased. "Women," for example, "went willingly into the field, and took their little ones with them to set corn." Well before Adam Smith would write "The Wealth of Nations," Bradford had stumbled upon the basics of capitalism. Unleashing the power of the individual brought such bounty and prosperity, that trade and commerce began to flourish. In just a few years, families were writing back to those in England, sharing stories of the land of plenty. And thus started the rapid movement of newcomers to this new world we now call the United States of America. Before I wrap up, I did want to remind everyone we can think President George Washington for the first Thanksgiving Day proclamation. Then we need to thank President Abraham Lincoln for making Thanksgiving a national holiday. While we enjoy a day of feasting with friends and family, make sure to remember how the holiday came to be, the lessons learned and to be thankful for the many blessings and bounties bestowed upon us by almighty God. Happy Thanksgiving!! Take a moment to rate and review the show and then share the episode on social media. In this episode, we are joined by two distinguished scholars who have closely documented the changing social and political trends in India for close to half a century, Jan Breman and Ghanshyam Shah. The two of them have come out with a new book, titled ‘Gujarat, Cradle and Harbinger of Identity Politics: India's Injurious Frame of Communalism', published by Tulika Books. This book, a collection of essays written during the period of Hindutva's growth in Gujarat and beyond, is an attempt to answer why majoritarian politics found fertile ground in Gujarat, of all places. In this edition of The Hindu On Books podcast, we speak with Breman and Shah about the history of communal politics in India, how it has evolved over the years, Gujarat's role in its expansion, and whether it is changing the average India's sense of nationhood and what it means to be an Indian. Guest: Jan Breman, Professor Emeritus of Comparative Sociology at the University of Amsterdam and Honorary Fellow at the International Institute of Social History, Amsterdam and Ghanshyam Shah, retired Professor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and was earlier Dr Ambedkar Chair Professor at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie. The Deep Drive takes on a weighty and controversial topic as Micah and Thomas discuss two popular ideals in the light of international conflict. Individualism, in its extreme form, tends to ignore the downtrodden and oppressed, while communalism in its most intense form can oppress the very freedoms that make us human, and forms an idealistic sense of community that doesn't actually exist. Amidst these difficult discussions, Thomas apparently believes that many penguins died in the Gulf of Mexico, Micah sings a sad song, the two have a quick disagreement about fences and, surprisingly, war is good proof we should all be on a low-carb diet.

Part of the International conference on Maharashtra in September 2021 - Devkumar Ahire, SPPU, Pune In the colonial state many things were created, constructed and formed. This is why complex social realities appear to have come into shape in the colonial situations. The complex relationship between the 'civil rights' given by the state of the law and the 'religious freedom' inherited from the colonial complex seems to have solidified the Communalism. Due to print capitalism, education system and nationalism, 'traditionalism' took shape in the framework of modernity. It combines religion and politics. All of these changes can be systematically understood through the Cow protection movement. Cow and cow slaughtering has been one of the most shocking aspects of Colonial Indian politics. This question came under British rule as the greatest threat to the country's peace. Because cow slaughtering was a religious right for all Muslims and for Hindus, religious freedom was at stake. The question of cows intensified due to the confusion of the laws of the princely states, customary practices and the confusion of British laws. In the pre-colonial period, the cow appears to have been used as a political instrument of the ruling class. But during the colonial period when the cow protection movement started, the cow became the instrument of mass political mobilization. At that time, the cow became the instrument of mass political mobilization. As a result of this, On the occasion of the cow protection movement, communalism was swiftly promoted and the transmission of communalism went from city to village as well as from elite class to the Subaltern mass. Nagpur in the Marathi region has been called the heart of this movement. It had its own printing press and full-time male- female activist campaigning for the spread of the movement. Through free books, cultural events, leaflets, leaflets, the movement is expanded and penetrated in various fields. The focus of research paper will be on Cow protection movement of Maharashtra so references of Marathi newspapers, biographies, autobiographies, magazines and other sources will be used.

The forthcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh are crucial for the current incumbent Yogi Adityanath and his party, the BJP. The communal temperature has risen quite a bit in the last few years, and especially so in the last few months. Recently, new tensions were added after 8 people, including 4 farmers, died after a car, allegedly driven by the Union Minister's son, ploughed into them. Opposition parties, especially the Congress, have condemned the incident and are sure to focus on it during the campaign. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav have been drawing big crowds wherever they have travelled. How will all this play out? Will it have an impact on the results and will polarisation between Hindus and others be the main plank of the Adityanath campaign? On this episode, Sidharth is joined by Professor Gilles Verniers, who is the Assistant Professor of Political Science at Ashoka University and Co-Director of the Trivedi Centre for Political Data. Apart from teaching, Prof. Verniers researches Indian political processes, identity politics and the intersections between gender and politics in India.Sidharth and Prof. Verniers talk about the Professor's observations from his years of researches into politics in UP, especially in the months running upto elections, and tons more. Inhabitants of other worlds looking down on our earth for the first time may very likely deduce that this planet is dominated by a civilization of cars, and we humans are just puddles of mud hidden inside. We live in a world turned upside-down—a utopia for automobiles, where instead of being communities built for freedom & flourishing, our cities are glittering monuments to petroleum, patriarchy, and profit. But buried under the grotesque mélange of cul-de-sacs, commodities, and mind-numbing commutes that define our suburban dystopias, rest designs for liberation hiding in plain sight. Where social reproduction is not subordinated to the production of profit. Where food, shelter, healthcare, and education are all decommodified. And where the unconditional and universal provision of these human rights is the non-negotiable foundation for institutionalizing freedom and unleashing human potential. In this episode, Matt & Jesse embark on a dialectical synthesis of ideas, weaving together the liberatory notions of a Feminism for The 99%, The Right to The City, and Free Housing For All into a conception of The City of The Golden Square—by imagining every neighborhood as a university. This inventive world-building exercise illuminates a mixtape for the future, conjoining the joyful & egalitarian features of neighborhoods with the noble & emancipatory potentialities of universities. Paradoxically, despite histories of racist, colonial, and capitalist violence, along with ongoing plunder by the corporate neoliberal state, both neighborhoods and universities still carry seeds of emancipation and together offer a coherent set of social and spatial paradigms that prefigure the shape of a better tomorrow. Thinking about neighborhoods becoming indistinguishable from universities is a way to envision what might emerge in our cities if we can erode capitalism, abolish the cost of living, and build a just transition to a green future of radical egalitarianism—where real democracy might finally blossom. Universities should be as common as neighborhoods, and every neighborhood should shimmer with the wholeness that only universities can offer. Every Neighborhood a University is a vision rooted in Social Ecology, grounded in Anarchism, born of Communalism, aimed at Library Socialism, and based on a new social contract: The Golden Square. If the borders between neighborhood and university can dissolve, making them one and the same, humanity might open up a sociological singularity, unleashing the rainbow light of our caged fecundity into the post-scarcity future we all deserve. Join us in this conversation to explore how the architecture of a solarpunk utopia can arise from the ashes of the here and now. It was a repeat attempt of what was done in the first wave of Covid - find a way to blame a community and deflect questions from the Govt. What was the BBMC bed scam and how did Tejasvi Surya's communal plan fail this time??? In this episode of Deshbhakt we also try and answer a deeper question - how does one stop hatemongers and bigots - by being polite or by calling them out brutally and bluntaly. Let's find a way to stop people who will play communal politics - even in the middle of a pandemic. *** Unlock MEMBER ONLY - Discord / Chats / Content PATREON - https://www.patreon.com/thedeshbhakt YOUTUBE - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmTM_hPCeckqN3cPWtYZZcg/join MERCH - https://kadakmerch.com/thedeshbhakt Chapter Heads : 00:00 - Fake Bed Scam 02:12 - How did it start ? 03:14 - Tejasvi makes it Communal 04:42 - The Hard Truth 06:16 - The responsible Public ! 08:56 - Communalism and its Impact *** SUBSCRIBE / FOLLOW US *** YouTube: - https://youtube.com/thedeshbhakt Twitter :- https://twitter.com/thedeshbhakt Web - https://thedeshbhakt.in/ Instagram :- https://instagram.com/akashbanerjee.in Facebook :- https://www.facebook.com/akashbanerjee.in Podcast - https://anchor.fm/thedeshbhakt **More DeshBhakt Videos** The Deshbhakt Episodes: https://bit.ly/3eLgvLv INDIA IN EMERGENCY: https://bit.ly/3dM4Bj8 Bhakt Banerjee Rocks: https://bit.ly/2VuFQlf B&D Media and the Public: https://bit.ly/389jjzw Akash-Vaani: https://bit.ly/3eKvN3h Credits : Writer : Akash Editor : Tushar Chaudhary Producer : Avishrant Singh REFERENCE : https://theprint.in/theprint-profile/bjps-tejasvi-surya-is-missing-from-covid-front-poll-scene-and-headlines/647686/ https://www.deccanherald.com/city/5-days-after-tejasvi-surya-row-muslim-staffers-in-bbmp-war-room-get-jobs-back-984162.html https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bengaluru/bengaluru-bbmp-to-rehire-11-of-17-staffers-suspended-after-tejasvi-suryas-claim/articleshow/82512684.cms https://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/bengaluru/2021/may/08/tejasvi-suryavisits-covid-war-room-to-apologise-for-slur-staffers-pull-off-sting-op-2299897.html https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/called-out-for-remarks-on-bjps-tejasvi-surya-shashi-tharoor-clarifies-2437285 https://www.indiatoday.in/coronavirus-outbreak/story/bengaluru-covid-war-room-staffers-conduct-audio-sting-operation-as-tejasvi-surya-apologises-for-leaked-phone-numbers-1800565-2021-05-09 https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/bangalore/ramachandra-guha-other-bengaluru-citizens-speak-out-again-tejasvi-suryas-communal-tweet-7304938/ https://theprint.in/india/arab-women-orgasm-to-shaheen-bagh-mughals-bjp-mp-tejasvi-surya-cant-resist-controversy/405540/ https://www.newsbytesapp.com/news/entertainment/siddharth-says-tn-bjp-members-leaked-his-number/story https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/i-just-read-out-list-given-me-tejasvi-surya-revisits-bbmp-war-room-apologises-148430 https://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/bangalore/bed-allotment-scam-emergency-response-hit-by-attrition-from-war-rooms/article34500444.ece https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/guise-exposing-corruption-tejasvi-surya-back-his-communal-tricks-148357 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thedeshbhakt/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thedeshbhakt/support
In this episode, we explore the evolution of the indigenous people of Lake Turkana. We look at how their subsistence farming evolved with a rapidly shifting climate and how both the ecology benefits from human involvement & how a unique collectivist and individualist community format allows for the community to quickly change practices to meet the unpredictable landscape. We wrap it up talking about the damages of colonialism on these resilient communities. Sources: Usufruct Rights to Trees: The Role of Ekwar in Dryland Central Turkana, Kenya Edmund G. C. AP Andy comes across a fellow radical exile Blair Taylor washed ashore on a beach in Nayarit, Mexico. The two post-anarchists discuss the life and work of curmudgeonly communalist Murray Bookchin as they watch dolphins frolicking in the sunset. Topics include radical muncipalism, Bookchin's concepts of democracy and citizenship, Blair's Institute for Social Ecology and the formation of the Symbiosis network with DSA-LSC, Black Socialists, Cooperation Jackson, the PKK and Rojava, Bookchin's criticism of Bernie Sanders, and others, and what sort of kinky things the old man was getting up to in Vermont. All is not rosy in the Native Immigrants household, as Jyojo B and Swami B have had a tiff... meaning they had to delay recording the show this week! But fear not, they managed to put their petty grievances aside, to ensure this week's new episode made it out in time... just. This week, they visited the Bhaktivedanta Manor during this past weekend's Janmasthami festival, where Swami B was not volunteering for the first time in 20 years! They also look at the Asian invasion in this year's Great British Bake Off. The main topic though this week, is Communalism within the Asian community... why have we segregated ourselves from each other, and why is their still discrimination between our communities?
