For about 10 years, researchers at the University of Washington’s Personal Robotics Lab have been developing a robotic arm that can help people with motor impairments, such as quadriplegics, feed themselves. That’s a task they may rely on human caregivers to do. The Assistive Dexterous Arm can be mounted onto a surface such as a power wheelchair or hospital table. With vision and touch sensors, ADA can determine how to best grasp and maneuver a bite of chicken or watermelon, for example, toward a user’s mouth. The lived experiences of people with disabilities are often ignored in the development of new technologies that could benefit them, according to Amal Nanavati, a recent PhD graduate from the UW’s Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering. But that isn’t the case with the ADA project. Dozens of people with motor impairments have provided feedback and guidance on it over the years, and some have even taken on the role of “community researchers” working alongside the UW robotics team. Jonathan Ko is a Seattle-based patent attorney and ADA community researcher who brought the device home to feed himself meals for a week. He and Nanavati are authors on a recently published paper describing this real-world testing of the technology. They join us to talk about what they learned and share their thoughts on the future of robot-assisted caregiving.
How we continue to remember September 11 THE INTERVIEW Marine Corps veteran, endurance athlete, adventurer and author Akshay Nanavati has a picture of a friend he lost in war on his wall and under it he wrote, “This should have been you. Earn this life." This was the fuel to write his book, "Fearvana: The Revolutionary Science of How to Turn Fear into Health, Wealth and Happiness" in order to help others navigate their own suffering and turn it into nirvana, turn it into bliss. It is also fuel for his own extreme adventuring. In November, Nanavati will begin a 110-day, 1,700-mile solo trek across Antarctica, wher he'll ski for 10 to 12 hours a day hauling a 400-pound sled full of supplies and become the single most isolated being on the planet. He shares how he has been preparing for the grueling physical and mental challenges he will face along the way. SCUTTLEBUTT VA worker errors when reviewing claims for full disability cost $100M, auditors say Post 58 in Oklahoma using gaming to provide veterans camaraderie and support. This is the 100th episode of Mentors on the Mic podcast, so I discuss how I started podcasting, my gratitude for my audience and mentors, and celebrating our wins. Our Mentor this week is Shaurya Nanavati, who manages the greenlighting process and provides guidance to drive content, distribution, and strategy decisions. Prior to his work at Lionsgate, he managed a music publishing company, wrote & toured as a musician, and, as a CPA, worked in public accounting at PwC in Texas. Shaurya considers himself a citizen of the world - born in India and raised between Mumbai and Houston. Post high school, he travelled to Austin where he obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at The University of Texas at Austin. After his stint in the world of music, he moved to Los Angeles to obtain an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management and pursue a career transition to filmed entertainment. In this episode, we talk about: • Going from CPA to Hollywood and how he realized early that his passion for music would not earn the lifestyle he wanted • He started researching people he wanted to be like and saw what they did, deciding whether to pursue Law or a Business degree. • Why he went to business school for the networking and how that helped him find the job he wanted • Getting an internship at 30 and why age shouldn't discourage you from doing anything • Whether they are more focused on development or acquisitions at Lionsgate • Filmmakers choose Lionsgate because they are the best place for storytellers and talent within the parameters of being a smart financial decision (plus great marketing) • "It's a lot of effort to learn what you know, but it takes an equal amount of effort to try to put yourself in the situation and the places you want to be." Prestige Golfshire, in the Nandi Hills, is possibly one of Bangalore's most beautiful residential areas. 275 acres of landscaped villas, with an 18-hole golf course, pool, tennis courts and other wonderful amenities that make life just special, besides being close to the airport and not that far from the heart of the city. But this is not a real estate commercial. This is about what's happening at around, oh, let's say knee level. Yes. It's about dogs. Ownerless, rudderless, street and village dogs that come on to this pristine property from around the many villages nearby and wander around, unaware of the next golf ball that could crack their skull. Life is unpredictable and scary if you're a street dog no matter how upscale the neighbourhood. Fortunately for the streeties at Prestige Golfshire, there's a lady named Anju Nanavati who lives there, zipping around in her little car plastered with pictures of doggies all over, as she gaily and joyfully tends to their needs. She knows all the dogs and they know her.Although Anju and her husband moved there presumably to lead the quiet, retired life, at least for Anju, it's been nothing but that. She has spent the last few years, including the lockdown, trying to fix all the problems of as many dogs as she possibly can, not only in the community, but slowly expanding to the villages in the vicinity, one, two, three and more. Anju says her husband Ajay has been of huge support to her as she spreads the word. And that word of course is ‘woof'.

This week we delve into the Nanavati case, which inevitably led to the abolition of the jury system in India. Commander Nanavati vs State of Maharashtra changed the way in which Indians viewed justice, and a precedent was set by the timely intervention of the Bombay High Court (02:56). As more media fueled cases are first tried in the court of public opinion, we wonder if the jury system should be brought back to the country (36:18). We also share our early impressions on WandaVision. Disney and Marvel's have attempted something so beautifully bizarre, that we may never actually see another episode again (59:18).
As a former US Marine tasked with locating explosive devices, Akshay experienced Post Traumatic Stress, depression and drug/alcohol addiction. He studied neuroscience as he was fascinated by it. Akshay learned that he is not defined by a disorder and refuses to accept it. His divorce caused him to break his sobriety. He decided to go 'within' on inward journey. So, Akshay spent 7 days in complete darkness, stillness and silence. Confronting his struggles, suffering and pain brought closer to bliss and enlightenment. Akshay shares these powerful nuggets of life wisdom: - we transcend what is - seek out your fears - our greatness, bliss and enlightenment reside on the other side of pain - we cannot fully experience the light until we've gone into the dark - self transcendence is the essence of enlightenment - conscious stillness is necessary for our growth - develop a positive experience with adversity and pain - remove your attachment of your self identity to the experience of the challenge - be with what is, but do not become what is - serve others - find your 'worthy struggle' - you're not defined by your pain https://fearvana.com tags: Akshay, Nanavati, Fearvana, story, stories, that, empower, empowering, empowerment, inspire, inspiring, inspiration, encourage, encouraging, encouragement, hope, light, podcast, Sean https://storiesthatempower.com
The Bombay High Court finally allowed 80-year-old Varavara Rao to be shifted from Taloja Jail to Nanavati Hospital for 15 days for medical treatment on 18 November. Senior advocate, Indira Jaisingh who is representing Rao in this matter appealed to the court seeking medical bail for Rao on the basis of Section 437 of the CrPC, which allows for releasing sick people and noted the detention of Varavara Rao was "cruel, inhuman and degrading" and violated provisions of Article 21 of the Constitution.Jaising said that his death may be inevitable, but his exit must be “dignified”... to which the HC court bench noted, “Ultimately, the man is on almost death bed. He needs some treatment. Can the state say no we will treat him in Taloja? We are only saying transfer him to Nanavati for two weeks. We will further see after two weeks.” But why did it take so much active intervention in order for Rao to be treated and transferred to Nanavati Hospital? K.M. Nanavati V. State Of Maharashtra (AIR 1962 SC 605) was a case from the 1960s Bombay, a time of walking out of the colonial identity for the city, and a murder trial unfolded in the quiet neighbourhood of the Mumbai locals. We discuss the politics and implications on the legal history of the case, and the sensationalism around the "three bullets that rocked the country". This is part 2 of our interview with Akshay Nanavati (@fearvana). He is the author of the best selling book “Fearvana” which has been endorsed by the Dalai Lama (he actually wrote the forward). I discovered this book while listening to Mr. Nanavati on the Read to Lead Podcast. You can find that interview here http://bit.ly/2pjWUJX ..I wanted to read this book early on in 2018, to get additional tools on dealing with fear for the rest of the year. Through listening to other podcasts and reading different articles, I've learned that fear is a powerful learning tool to not shy away from. It's an emotion that can allow us to grow and live our most exciting life. This book was a slow burn. The beginning chapters weren't sinking in for me. As I got later into the book, the information being presented started to make me think. These are my biggest takeaways from Akshay Nanavati's Fearvana. Here are quotes from the book with page numbers. 1.-'I learned to shift my mental patterns to loving myself, forgiving myself, and allowing myself to focus on making progress, instead of reaching the perfection of a destination.' pg 63 2.-'When I shared some of these stories during my first public speaking engagement at the Verizon headquarters; someone asked me how I became fearless. I told her I'm not. I've felt fear every time I did anything worthwhile in my life.' pg 86 3.-'We live in a world constantly trying to make our lives easier, but if you want success and meaning in your life, don't avoid struggle. Welcome it. Seek it out every day.' pg 151 4.-'Earning success is hard. The process is laborious, tedious, sometimes even boring. Becoming wealthy, influential, and world-class in your field is slow and arduous.' pg 175 5.-"The words that we attach to our experience become our experience, regardless of whether it's objectively accurate or not' states Tony Robbins." pg 84 By purchasing this book through the provided Amazon link (here https://amzn.to/2GViEaJ ), you will be supporting this podcast and the author of this book. If you create a positive relationship with fear, you can accomplish anything. In a capsule, that's the message Akshay Nanavati, the speaker, author and explorer behind the book Fearvana came to share with me today. He has been featured in Inc. Magazine, Fast Company, Entrepreneur, Forbes and many more high-profile outlets. And get this: the Dalai Lama wrote the foreword to his book after a cold pitch that took four months of confronting fear. Akshay is a veteran of the Iraq war who suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, survivor's guilt and alcoholism before he learned to confront his greatest fears. By digging deep, he figured out the fears that caused his procrastination and made them an ally. Now he uses fear and guilt to drive his “worthy struggle” of helping others overcome their own fears by embracing them. “If you don't seek out a worthy struggle, struggle will find you anyway,” Akshay tells me in this episode. And that's a lot more scary than choosing the fear you face. Have you ever felt like you procrastinate because you have a deep-seeded fear you can't overcome? This episode's for you. Have you ever avoided doing something that could lead to a great reward because you were afraid? Akshay can tell you how to move forward with actionable advice. Do you ever wonder what you could become if you could quit being scared of what might or might not happen? Akshay can tell you how to change your mindset and find bliss in your brutal reality. Akshay Nanavanti is an explorer of what it is to be human, to be fully alive. This discussion challenged me to reanalyze how I perceive the concepts of fear and love. Akshay doesn’t see them as opposing forces at all. He actually views them as being complimentary. He notes that when fear is felt, oxytocin is created in the blood, which is the “love hormone”. And that oxytocin allows you to rise above the fear, to be love. Whoa! Akshay believes that fear and love must come together for us to come fully alive. “When you push those lines of the human potential within yourself, you start to see that connection within us. When you explore your own potential, you see yourself in others, and others in you.”
