Organized crime. A brutal assault that kicked off a gang war. Car bombs. The brazen assassination of a mob boss in broad daylight. These things all happened in Francis Ford Coppola's groundbreaking film The Godfather – but first they happened in the real life of Alex Rocco, one-time Boston gang member turned Hollywood character actor whose star turn as Moe Greene in the classic mobster epic is one of the most improbable career shifts in movie history. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 26, 2023 is: consigliere kohn-sil-YEH-reh noun Consigliere refers to a trusted adviser or counselor. Originally, a consigliere specifically served the leader of a criminal organization such as the Mafia, but others likened to such an adviser are now sometimes called consiglieri too. // Largely unknown to the general public, she was nonetheless a powerful Washington figure who served as the Senate leader's trusted consigliere and political strategist. See the entry > Examples: “‘Mafia Mamma' is an action comedy about a flaky American marketing employee and soon-to-be empty nester, Kristin (Toni Collette), who, through the demise of her grandfather, Don Giuseppe Balbano (Alessandro Bressanello), becomes the head of a major Italian crime family. Assisted by Don Giuseppe's consigliere, Bianca (Monica Bellucci), she must take down the Romanos, a rival family, while avoiding her own assassination.” — Odie Henderson, The Boston Globe, 14 Apr. 2023 Did you know? If you're a fan of The Godfather series of movies, mention of the word consigliere may already have brought to mind the character Tom Hagen. Hagen, the Corleones' family lawyer, is famously dismissed by the Don's successor and son Michael Corleone because he is not a “wartime consigliere.” The word consigliere comes from Italian and has been a part of English since the 17th century; it was originally used of someone who served on a council in Italy. Currently, it most commonly refers to advisers to the Mafia—a use that first appeared in English in a document from a 1963 session of the U.S. Senate. It is also used more generally for someone who is likened in some way to such an adviser.

In Renaissance Italy, the Borgia family were admired for their audacity and their ruthlessness - they even inspired Mario Puzo's depiction of the Corleones in The Godfather. But do the Borgias deserve their reputation? How did they rise to power? How did a man with so many illegitimate children become Pope?In this episode of Not Just the Tudors, Professor Suzannah Lipscomb talks to Dr. Mary Hollingsworth about how the Borgias became history's most notorious dynasty. For this episode, the Senior Producer was Elena Guthrie. In the 60s, movies looked and felt quite a bit different due to Hollywood's Hays Code. But as the 70's neared and a rating system was established, filmmakers gained some freedom to explore the art of cinema. In 1972 Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo jumped at the opportunity to bring the vision of The Godfather to the world. Debuting on March 24, this mobster movie set the groundwork for this genre that few films have been able to capture to this day. The pacing, thematic elements, and complex character development flowed together in a new way. This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the classic by looking at the whole trilogy and discussing how it came about, why it's so respected, and new ways you can experience the world of the Corleones. Get the full original show notes here.At the beginning of November, to help out our NaNoWriMo'ers, we did an episode on Character Arcs. In the third segment we briefly touched on the negative arc, or the moral descent. Here's some notes from that episode:The disillusionment (or negative change) arc, the character also believes a lie, is confronted with the truth and is able to overcome the lie, but the new truth — existence after accepting the truth — is tragic. This is Michael Corleone. He believes himself to be good, to be righteous. But he is a criminal, a ruthless loyalist to his corrupt family. When he accepts this about himself, he is tragically doomed to lead the family after his father's death. This video calls this the “corruption arc” wherein the character has the truth, and is very aware of it, but as he is tested, he decides to exchange the truth for a lie — i.e. the Corleones must kill their enemies. So what are the elements of the moral descent character arc? How do you know you're in one?read more...

#oscarsliste #oscars #oscar #academy #academyaward #preisverleihung #derpate #pate #godfather #alpacino #marlonbrando #pacino #brando #corleone #doncorleone #oscarfilm #mafia #newyork #pferdekopf #besterfilm #francisfordcoppola #coppola
It's November, which means awkward mustaches (nailed it), enjoying the foliage, and emotionally preparing oneself for a blissful family Thanksgiving dinner. That means we're doing the Top Families in Movies - not to be confused with Top Family Movies nor Top Families in Family Movies. We're talking about the Hoovers, the Addams, the Burnhams, the Jones's, the Von Trapps, the Corleones… it's a family affair! Let's just all hope that uncle Erik (or as we call him all episode long for reasons unknown… Andy) Killmonger doesn't show up for turkey.
In the second half of Colin's two-part conversation with actor and director Lou Antonio, Lou talks about playing Koko in the film Cool Hand Luke and what it was like being on the set with such a storied cast. Lou also talks about how he was almost chosen to play one of the Corleones in The Godfather, the joys of filming on location, his work on the ill-fated but popular show Dog and Cat (which he did with a young Kim Basinger) and his encounters with such legends as George Peppard, George C. Scott, Don Ameche, and Heath Ledger.

Here it is, the Second Mafia War. In this monster-length outing, we talk mafia politics, heroin trafficking, the real Corleone family, the CIA, Luciano, Lansky, terrorist bombings, massacres, murders, and more. It’s a blood soaked journey through one of the darkest periods of Italy's recent past, and a sorely overlooked part of modern European history to boot. Bada bing! Is this the most-referenced piece of pop culture on Gilmore Girls? While we’re focusing on one reference in the only Emmy-winning episode of our favorite show, we can’t ignore how many times The Godfather has gotten a shout-out. What did the real mafia think of this movie? Why did it have so much Oscar controversy? And how do the Corleones compare to the Gilmores? We complete the Holy Film Trio by covering this classic, its history, and a bunch of other pop culture picks that reference it until we run out of quotes just like Lorelai. Other pop culture we ref: Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Misery, Mommie Dearest, The Outsiders, Errol Flynn, Claude Monet, You’ve Got Mail, Frank Sinatra, Zootopia, Modern Family, Tuck Everlasting, Parks & Recreation, The Rainmaker, Avengers: Endgame, The Irishman So it's a show? Fran, as she is know to her friends, later gave birth to Mario, now a legendary fashion photographer, Vanina, a stylist & photographic artist and the late Davide, a searingly brilliant young photographer whose untimely death in Feb 1997 has led Fran to campaign for the protection and treatment of young people in the fashion industry. Now a recent documentary, book and exhibition of Davide’s work have received critical acclaim and as the Sorrenti dynasty reaches it’s 3rd generation, as Mario’s photographer daughter Gray’s star begins to ascend, now seems like the perfect time to hear Fran’s story from the beginning. And it is a blockbuster of The Godfather proportions. So sit down, get comfortable, and enjoy part 1

Titus & John Presnall complete their discussion of the Godfather--they look at how Part II reverses the structure of the original & completes the portrayals of Vito & Michael Corleone. They discuss the all-American story of an immigrant family, of making it in New York, moving out West, & going international (Cuba). The Corleones rehearse American history & this changes the non-American Sicilian principle of true friendship Vito tries to adapt to the New World.
With the holidays approaching -- and with their childhood home facing the threat of a terrifying wildfire -- Teddy and Emma take a moment to count their blessings, Berenstain Bears-style, and rank their top ten fictional families ever. Some of the ohanas on their lists include: the Corleones, the Chipmunks, the Lannisters, the Brady Bunch, the Koopalings, Clan McDuck, and the Klumps. In addition, Em and Ted answer such pressing fictional family questions as: "What do 'Lilo & Stitch' and 'Coco' get right that 'Moana' got wrong?", "When there's four grandparents in a bed, where does everyone put their feet?" And "Why does adding a baby always make the family suck?"
Did you just hear a gunshot, or was that an engine backfiring? Probably both! Join Janelle and Tami as they decide whether the crime-lovin' Corleones or the car-drivin' Andrettis could do a better job designing a billboard for a local business. Come for the books and sports, stay for the 2017 Indy 500 hype + predictions! Vroom vroom! Mozzarella! Arrivederci!
The Company of The Moors by Teferu Azr the Corleones. the Sopranos. The Italian organized crime families called the mafia do not originate in Sicily, as many believe. Nor are they based after the organization of Imperial Rome. It is the Moorish, pirate companies of the 16th and 17th centuries where the Sicilians learned to organize their ranks to fend off foreign intrusion. These ‘companies' were called Maehfils, an Afro-Arabic word meaning ‘union' or ‘to unify', a word later Anglicized and pronounced ‘Mafia'. These organized ‘companies' were structured under Beylerbeys (The Boss of Bosses, Chief of Chiefs, or Governor-Generals), Beys or Deys (underbosses, or sub-Chiefs), Reis (Captains), Crews (Soldiers), Enforcers (Corsairs), and Associates (trade partners). These ‘companies' controlled, protected, and enforced the laws of the Mediterranean. In their cities in Tunis, Algiers, Sale, and many other North African coastal regions, these black Moorish companies controlled city politics, game rackets, trade, policing, and settled disputes with their own code of justice. And though dubbed as ‘pirates', these Moorish companies were far more loyal and less brutal than the European Privateer, and held to a strict code of honor. A COMPANY OF MOORS is a fictional account based on the politics of the time. 1640. North Africa.
