Nathan Jones has been talking about building command line interfaces, good design practices in C, creating MCU boards, wielding the PIC of destiny, and going beyond Arduino. As we are too lazy to attend the conferences, we asked him to give us the highlights.  Nathan is giving two conference talks at Crowd Supply's Teardown 2023 June 23-24 in Portland, Oregon: Make Your Own MCU Board Build HackerBox #0040 and Wield the PIC of Destiny! He spoke recently at the Embedded Online Conference about Object Oriented Programming (well, really good design practices). He has a related github repository so you can look at the examples for yourself. He also gave a workshop on creating a simple command line interface (another excellent github repo full of examples). Probably the best place to start is his Embedded for Everyone Wiki where he collects all the bits and pieces you might want to know about getting into embedded systems. Transcript

Last week Parker and Stephen asked for some clarification on some old school audio measurements so they could calibrate the Space Echo. Steve Kuehn a self proclaimed gray beard from Austin says the following. 0 dBm in the audio business refers to voltage level that will produce 1milliWatt into a 600 ohm load. But over the years, it refers to a voltage level even if you are not aren't using a 600 ohm load so it is a little of a misnomer. If you do the math, 0 dBm is the same as 775mVrms sine wave signal source. -50dBm would be 2.45mVrms. FX DEV BOARD IS LIVE!! Check out the Crowdsupply page and get one! See Figure 1! Arduino powered Honeypot A honeypot is a device meant to attract/pre-occupy hackers, by providing something like a red herring to them; in this case, a system which looks and feels like an ancient bank credit card processing gateway from the 1980's... complete with slow-speed 1200 baud, and uppercase-only text. Podcast Notes This podcast was recorded at the MacroFab Engineering location. See Figure 1. MacroFab had its annual Thanksgiving Potluck today. See Figure 2. Parker has been working more on the Jeep Radio. Part numbers for the IC's are the following: TDA8563 : 2-Channel 40W power amp TDA7429L : ST manufactured 3 Band Equalizer Audio Processor TEA0675 : Dual Dolby IC Stephen brewed another beer with his electronic brewing rig. He has updated it to be safer and less likely to kill him. See Figure 3. The FX Dev Board is nearing launch of the crowd funding. Video is almost done. The synth Stephen has been working on has the VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) designed and layed out. Open-V, The First Open Source RISC-V Microcontroller. Students at the Universidad Industrial de Santander in Colombia, have been working on an open 32-bit microcontroller based on the RISC-V instruction set. It is being crowd funded on Crowd Supply. $49 USD gets you a first-run mRISC-V in a QFN-32 package and $99 gets you a development board with a SD card slot, USB connector, and voltage regulators. 160Mhz Clock Speed SPI I2C SDIO JTAG 10 Bit ADC 12 Bit DAC 16 GPIO Special thanks to whixr over at Tymkrs for the intro and outro!

MacroFab Engineering Podcast

Podcast Notes Parker has been working on the SAIM (Semi-Automatic Inspection Machine) this week. Work had to pause as Parker broke off a M5 x 0.8MM drill/tap combo bit off inside the extrusion. Should be able to remove the tap when a left hand drill bit arrives from McMaster. Parker also designed a "man in the middle" board for the Altera USB Blaster programmer. This allows the programming cable to also power the device that is going to be programmed reducing the number of cables needed to hook up while in production. See Figure 1. This board is open source. Files on the MacroFab GitHub. The Jig of Destiny is almost complete. Parker is waiting on a 2-56 tap from McMaster to arrive before he can finish the Jig of Destiny. There are plans to use Octavo's OSD3358 IC in a project. Parker plans on having a project lined up by the next podcast. Stephen is currently working on the FX Dev Board. He is waiting on CrowdSupply getting back to him on when they can start the campaign. The enclosure has been priced out. A prototype of the enclosure will be ordered next week. Last week, Stephen was playing around with the NuTubes. They have limitations but Stephen is almost done with a audio amplifier that uses them. The SSPS now has a simpler analog control. Stephen was able to reduce how many opamps he needed to control the larger OPA541 opamp. Fixing the Space Echo started this week. Stephen is starting by replacing all the capacitors and Parker is working on the front plate. See Figure 2 and 3. Stephen and Parker go on a lengthy rant about capacitors. Stephen bought some "Fine Gold" audio grade capacitors. Parker likes the Nichicon's UBW series since they are baby blue in color. Stephen mention Mundorf capacitors. Asus is going to make a robot. Called the Zenbo. The Zenbo is basically IoT, home automation, and a robotic pet all rolled into a $600 package. RadioShack is returning. After closing 2000+ stores they hired a new CEO Dene Rogers. Parker wants to see a "will call" style setup for getting electronic parts. Special thanks to whixr over at Tymkrs for the intro and outro theme!

MacroFab Engineering Podcast

Podcast Notes This week Stephen and Parker have a guest. Greg Sheridan of Octavo Systems. Greg is the Marketing and Sales Manager for Octavo Systems. Octavo Systems builds "System-in-Package" or SiP style chips to reduce the complexity of board layout and offset the costs more PCB layers. Their first product is a Beagle Bone on Chip IC called the OSD3358. Greg can rattle off the part number no problem as he was the one that came up with the naming convention. OSD3358-512M-BAS. Octavo Systems takes the die of the IC they want to integrate and combine it with the DRAM, decoupling, and power regulation needed and put them on a custom substrate. The IC die is then bond wired to the substrate. Octavo Systems gets their dies direct from the manufactures like Texas Instruments. The OSD3358-512M-BAS can be purchased at Digi-key in singles for almost $50. The BGA is a large pitch of 1.27mm. Octavo hopes it will help out the maker group. Uses normal IC packaging technology so it should be fairly robust. Thermal performance is very good. FCC/CE certification will be coming soon. Greg does not expect any problems given how short the traces are. Octavo is looking at integrating more devices for the future. They are not limited to the semiconductor process when selecting sub systems. The Ello 2M on CrowdSupply is a really "neat" stackable PCB portable computer for learning to program and hack hardware. Runs a PIC32MX MCU and Basic OS. All open source on github. Greg saw the PocketCNC at MakerFaire. They have a version made completely our of FR4 called the Machine Shield. Industrial enclosures for the the Raspberry Pi actually exist. Video explaining how the Raspberry Pi 2 reset when a Xenon Flash his the PCB. Nest releases an open source version of its networking protocol called OpenThread. Will make all IoT devices talk to each other. Special thanks to whixr over at Tymkrs for the intro and outro theme!

Hosts: Parker Dillmann Stephen Kraig Guests: N/A Figure 1: SSPS front panel layout. Traces to come soon. Figure 2: Inconsistencies in the LTST-C171CKT datasheets. Podcast Notes Stephen is still working on customer fixtures but managed to get some progress on the FX Development Board. Stephen has been working on the documentation to get the Crowd Supply fundraising going. Still need to prototype the enclosure. Parker has been working on the SSPS front panel design. See Figure 1. Parker is going to use Omron's B3W-9000-RG2C illuminated switches because it has a Red and Green LED and allows for custom key caps via printable transparencies. The Bourns' PEL12T-4226F-S1024 RGB Encoder will function to adjust the power on the supply. This is a 2-bit encoder with a clear shaft that is illuminated with a RGB LED. Instead of 74HC595s, Parker is going to use a STP16CP05 LED driver. The IC is a 16-bit constant current sink driver. He chose the TSSOP-24 package because it has a thermal pad to heat dissipation. Parker hasn't decided on whether to go with a USB 2.0 Type B connector like most industrial devices or go with the new Type C style. He is going to try the TI TPS65982 which is a USB Type C controller and power switch IC. Has a $30 evaluation board, TPS65982-EVM. Operations at MacroFab found a datasheet inconsistency with a Lite-On LED. P/N: LTST-C171CKT which is a house part at MacroFab (MF-LED-0805-RED). Both datasheets are identical except one drawing is anode marked and the other is cathode marked. We checked our stock and the LTST-C171CKT's are cathode marked. Atmel is removing the full-swing crystal oscillator from there entire MEGA line of IC's. Parker thinks it is weird that they are changing the tooling for such established MCUs. Hackaday article about the topic. Interesting topic on the ECE subreddit on "In your opinion, what makes someone a "bad engineer?". Parker and Stephen talk about engineering ethics. Parker thinks this video of a power transformer starting up is an awesome sound effect. This brings Parker talking about the best sound effect ever, which is the tractor beam shut down sound in Star Wars. Which rivals the

Joshua Lifton is one of the founders of Crowd Supply, a company that crowdfunds around products. They take a very different approach to preparation, funding, and follow-up than Kickstarter. Kickstarter just announced that it had crossed $1bn in pledges in its five-year lifetime. Of that, it's disbursed nearly $850m. It's on track to facilitate perhaps half a billion in 2014 alone. The name Kickstarter may be used interchangeably with the term crowdfunding, and it is the 800 lb. gorilla in the space. (Watch out for the shipping charges on that gorilla, especially internationally.) But in its wake, hundreds of millions of dollars are being raised from all sorts of other sites which fill in important aspects of ecosystem, and Crowd Supply is one of them.
