Welcome back to another episode of the Niche Pursuits News podcast!  This week Spencer and Jared decided to do things a little bit differently. As the year is coming to a close, they decided to talk about the 3 top Niche Pursuits podcast episodes for 2023, as well as their personal favorites. Spencer explains how he collected the data to determine which episodes were the most listened to this past year, and then they kick off the episode by talking about the third most listened-to podcast, which was the interview with Grady Hudd. Grady grew his niche site to $9k per month in 2 years with no SEO experience. Spencer and Jared talk about why they think this was such a popular podcast. Grady's relatability was probably key, and it's likely that many beginners connected with his situation. The second most listened-to episode was Forrest Webber, who talked about how he grew his portfolio to $40k a month after replacing rental properties with websites. They talk about his story, the important mindset shift that brought him so much success, and how he scaled his business. The most popular podcast for the year was with Shelly Marmour, a travel blogger who grew her monthly income from $700 to $52k per month in 1 year with affiliate SEO. Shelly's story was also relatable and inspirational, as many people could probably identify with where she was in the beginning and were interested to see how she grew her business so incredibly.  Then Spencer and Jared share their favorite episodes of 2023. Jared's favorite was Cyrus Shepard's episode on internal link building and he described the interview and the information shared as incredibly succinct and easy to understand. The episode was packed with actionable tips and insightful details about internal linking based on a data-heavy study that Cyrus did, and he talks about everything from Link Whisper to link sculpting. Spencer's favorite was how Kevin Espiritu grew his gardening site from $400 per month to 8 figures per year, which is also a story that most people can relate to. He started out like most of us, building his site back in 2016, and today he's making over $10 million per year.  He did it by growing his website first, then his YouTube channel and his social media channels, and then he launched his own products. What Spencer and Jared especially like about this episode is his approach to plateaus in his business and how he acquired another website and merged the two into a massively successful brand. And that brings us to the end of this episode of Niche Pursuits News and the end of another year of Niche Pursuits podcasts that seek to motivate, educate, and inspire.  Here's to another year of learning from one another and to a very successful 2024! Want to hear about the latest developments in AI and the potential impact on website owners? Don't miss the latest episode of Niche Pursuits News! Once again, Jared and Spencer team up for an engaging and informative discussion that covers a range of exciting topics. They start by talking about how the WordPress Jetpack plugin incorporates an AI assistant directly into the editor. This feature will allow users to generate text directly in WordPress and also correct spelling and grammar, generate titles, and uses several different prompts for tone, all for $10 a month. Then they discuss a report on the Search Generative Experience, the “new featured snippets,” and how quotes may be pulled directly from websites without any attribution or backlinks. This would cause quite a stir among SEOs and publishers, and Jared and Spencer discuss the implications and concerns surrounding this development. On a potentially positive note for some, they share a recent tweet by Cyrus Shepard, who crawled millions of URLs to compile a list of 7 categories of searches that are unlikely to trigger AI results in the SERPs. Google Bard is also a topic of conversation in this episode. Jared and Spencer discuss the new location settings, which have been added to help localize queries, and new developments in exporting tables to Google Sheets, which is now easier than ever. The discussion then shifts to Spencer and Jared's side hustle projects. Spencer talks about his idea for a YouTube series, where he acts as a mentor and host in a competition between two or three people. Their challenge? To start a small online business in just 30 days, with the winner taking home a monetary prize. The journey would be documented in a single, well-edited, and inspirational video. Speaking of inspirational, Jared and Spencer share their experience being part of the Amazon Influencer program. Both believe this is a great program for quick financial wins, and they talk about content ideas as they continue to upload videos to see where this side hustle leads. Jared briefly shares his other side projects, including a YouTube channel he's working on at the moment. In subsequent episodes, he expects to give listeners a better status update. In the final segment of this episode, Jared and Spencer talk about some of the weird niche sites they've discovered. Jared reviews a website called Best Love Text Messages. It was likely originally created as a source of messages for loved ones but eventually expanded into a wider variety of messages, quotes, and captions. The website used to get 300,000 organic page views until a Google update, and although it still boasts a substantial number of keywords and page views and could be easily replicated with AI nowadays, there are also areas for improvement. Spencer shares a website with several web-based games he used around 2010: QWOP. It's a video game that was extremely popular back in the day and still manages to attract almost 50,000 organic visitors per month. With a DR of 64 and a substantial Twitter following, Jared and Spencer discuss the potential of supporting it through a Patreon-like platform. Do you want to know the optimal number of internal links you should build to new pages? Or how about which anchor texts will get you the best results? In this episode of the Niche Pursuits podcast, long-time SEO expert Cyrus Shepard shares some very interesting answers to these questions you won't want to miss. His findings come from an in-depth study he did on the impact of internal linking on a website's ranking and traffic. He analyzed 1800 websites and 23 million internal links and found a positive correlation between internal links and Google traffic. But there's a catch. After a certain point, the relationship between internal links and traffic diminishes. So, how can you make the most of your internal links? Cyrus emphasizes the importance of controlling both popularity and relevance in internal linking. He shares insights on Page Rank Sculpting and advises starting with a plan and adding links as soon as possible to avoid playing catch-up later. He also believes updating old content and internal linking should be a continuous part of your site management process. Cyrus then shares tips on where to place internal links and the importance of varied anchor text. Plus, he shares his thoughts on keyword cannibalization and an example of how linking multiple pages together using keyword-rich cannibalization keywords improved the ranking of all pages. But internal linking isn't the only factor at play. Redirecting 404 pages with a 301 redirect to a highly relevant page is important. Plus, he recommends automation tools like Link Whisper to help find internal linking opportunities.  Be sure to get more content like this in the Niche Pursuits Newsletter Right Here: https://www.nichepursuits.com/newsletter   Want a Faster and Easier Way to Build Internal Links? Have we grown past the pursuit of the almighty link above every other SEO tactic? Certainly, since Google released the Penguin update in 2012, addressing link farms and other issues associated with people gaming the system, the idea of getting as many links as you can is not the path toward ranking.  But still, links are still a factor. So where do links legitimately fit into a solid SEO strategy?   Wix's Head of SEO Branding, Mordy Oberstein, and Head of SEO Communications, Crystal Carter, carve up the links and their role in SEO like the Halloween Jack-o-lantern.  There's a shift of mindset that has to occur in SEO. Both Mordy and Crystal agree that there is an over-emphasis on links for SEO. To them, links are fundamentally about traffic and helping users. Creating quality content that makes sense to link to is fundamental and earns market credibility, not “link juice.” Still, establishing quality links is integral to a well-built SEO campaign. The right links from the right sites pointing to the right pages can impact how well you rank. Which is why Debbie Chew, SEO Manager at Dialpad, shares her three best key link-building tactics, from personalized outreach to stats posts to research reports. How to take down Reddit, IP addresses ranking, Meta makes advertising harder

Today we'll be looking at some negative SEO issues that have come up including how an onlyfan performer may have taken down reddit's homepage, your IP address in Google results, Meta's new restrictions on advertising, and the worst practice for handing over a site from one agency to another. How easy would it be to remove reddit's home page from Google's index? Apparently a simple DMCA is all it took. Cyrus Shepard noted on twitter that the main reddit homepage wasn't ranking #1 anymore and some further investigation looks like a DMCA request was the culprit. While you are checking out the tweets, also take a look at Cyrus' company Zyppy and their SEO success factors. Probably one of the better put together lists of ranking factors you should and shouldn't care about.https://twitter.com/CyrusShepard/status/1478101570646540289https://zyppy.com/seo-success-factors/We've all been there, a staging version or just the straight IP version of the site gets indexed. I didn't bring this up yesterday as part of the office hours recap as John somewhat touched on this issue, but there was a reddit thread where he put in a lot of effort into the reply and I think it's important enough to mention. John Mueller said that generally, Google will list a site in its search results with the domain name rather than using an IP address. But if you see both and know your website is crawlable via this protocol then there's no reason to worry about being deindexed. https://www.reddit.com/r/TechSEO/comments/rs7pjb/perfect_storm_caused_a_tank_in_ratings_ip_address/ Starting January 19th, 2022 Meta (You know, Facebook) will no longer allow you to market certain targeting options relating to sensitive topics. A list containing examples for all types of sensitive categories was given Health causes (e.g., “Lung cancer awareness”, “World Diabetes Day”, “Chemotherapy”)Sexual orientation (e.g., “same-sex marriage” and “LGBT culture”)Religious practices and groups (e.g., “Catholic Church” and “Jewish holidays”)Political beliefs, social issues, causes, organizations, and figuresI think this is a great move, and I am happy to see this. Having worked in marketing in the medical field, I did sometimes feel like we were able to target a little too accurately and it felt someone intrusive. Little by little, we're getting less targeted ads, but we're also safeguarding our privacy. I think the balancing act is a tough one, but this is the right direction. This also is something I think will help balance out the ability to influence a specific group too much, and forces advertisers to broaden their ads to a larger spectrum of people with differing political or social beliefs. https://developers.facebook.com/blog/post/2021/12/08/updating-metas-detailed-targeting-options/Hiding results when handing over a site: Just a fun little reminder of the URL removal tool in Search Console - which is used to temporarily remove a result from the search result pages. Think of it like a filter for results, and you are asking Google to filter the results out that follow a specific pattern. I've seen this used in negative ways when handing over a site from one agency to another, it's a bit hidden but a great way to hide the important parts of a page with nothing else wrong with the site. https://twitter.com/JohnMu/status/1477740336134959104

So usually around this time of year, I do an SEO predictions podcast. But you know what I’m over it, the world and their rabbit has an SEO podcast these days, and everyone does a predictions podcast, so no. It’s not happening here. And also the predictions are always the same. Voice search will be bigger. Optimise for EAT. SERPs will change. Schema blah blah blah. Obviously, we have the page experience update coming in May 2021 but we’ve covered that in our episode with Peter and we’ll do more around that time. And here’s another thing. The more SEO changes the more it stays the same. And most people (and yes I know it’s not all) are not even getting the basics right, so there’s no need for them to get sweaty about all the complex next-level stuff. In this episode to kick off 2021, I’m speaking to one of my fave SEO experts (and one of the few funny ones) Cyrus Shepard about why we should get back to basics with SEO.   Tune in to learn: Why simple SEO factors matter, and which should come first Whether you should target keywords What “fresh” content is Why unique content is still important The purpose of crawlability, crawl budgets, and 404 redirects How relevant backlinks are to Google

Successful SEO starts with keyword research. Moz’s Cyrus Shepard reminds us that you need to rank for what people are actually searching for, not what you think they’re searching for. That means truly understanding exactly what a keyword is, and prioritizing keywords by potential. Uncover more ideas by determining what keywords your competitors are ranking for.  Yes, you can actually do that.  Why recreate the wheel when they’ve already done some of the heavy lifting for you?

¡Felices carnavales!

Cyrus Shepard, previous Head of Audience Development at Moz and current founder and owner of Zyppy, joined us to talk about the latest news in digital marketing. We opened the conversation with discussion about some automated brick-and-mortar developments in San Francisco. Jeff had his first experience in an Amazon Go store, a weird, Orwellian experience to say the least. Then he went to a robotic coffee shop where all coffee is made by a robotic arm. Cyrus makes fun of Jeff for losing the the remaining human contact left in his life. We discuss voice search, where we are less worried about the trend for increasing amounts of voice-based searches, and more worried about complex voice answers, and featured snippets that are pulling away clicks. Influencer marketing brings us into a weird territory of ethics, again. We discuss the issues of quantifying results, and overall transparency.
