57. 3 SEO Myths Debunked

Welcome back to episode 2 with Damon Burton. Damon is the founder and CEO of a highly successful SEO agency. In the previous episode, we discussed how Damon is able to set effective boundaries to balance work and family life. We also talked about Damon's journey to become a successful SEO expert and entrepreneur. In this episode, Damon will be debunking three common SEO myths, and he'll share a few tips on how to improve our SEO. 3 SEO Myths We Need to Stop Believing Here are three common myths about SEO (search engine optimization) and why we shouldn't believe them. Myth 1: Keyword Stuffing is a Great Way to Boost Our Site's Ranking Keyword stuffing is when a webpage attempts to rank higher on a search engine by filling its page with hidden keywords. This used to be extremely popular, and for a while was effective. Damon still gets clients who ask about it, but Google has eliminated this tactic's effectiveness. Now a website earns its rank only from what a real person would be able to read on the site.  In fact, attempting to hide keywords can now do more harm than good. Google pays attention to a webpage's bounce rate, which is the percentage of site visitors who enter and then leave without continuing to view other pages within the same site. If a site has poorly written content or it's stuffed with keywords and doesn't read well, people will abandon it. If a site's bounce rate is too high, Google won't direct viewers to it because they want to create the best experience for their users. Myth 2: We Must Get as Many Backlinks as Possible Another common SEO myth is that we should try to get as many backlinks as possible, regardless of the quality of the source. Backlinks are when another website links to our website. Those links count as votes for our site in a credibility-building popularity contest. These links do have value and they always will, but the goal is not to get as many backlinks as possible from unrelated sites. Google gives much more weight to backlinks from the high-quality, related content.  Damon helps his clients focus on creating high-quality content that will attract backlinks naturally from high-quality related sites. These kinds of backlinks will be much more influential in Google's search algorithm than the backlinks from low-quality, unrelated pages. Myth 3: Google's New Algorithm Will Ruin Our Site's SEO Many people worry every time Google makes changes to their algorithm. Damon, however, never worries himself with the intricacies of Google's new algorithms and he has still been able to drive tremendous SEO success for his clients. He thinks that if someone has to worry that much about a Google algorithm change, then it means they're cutting corners, and it's going to catch up to them. With his clients, Damon focuses on the core concepts and principles of SEO, such as site speed and creating great content that people want to consume and share. Because of this strategy, more often than not, his clients aren't affected too badly by Google algorithm changes, and if they are, it usually impacts them positively. “I actually don't get too worried about the intricacies of Google's new algorithms because if you have to care that much, then it means you're cutting corners, and eventually it's going to catch up to you. So, I focus on the core concepts and principles of SEO, and we've never had a client get a penalty.” - Damon Burton Let's talk about a few of Google's major algorithm changes and how they focus on quality.  Google Panda Update In 2011, Google came out with the Google Panda Update, which focused on the uniqueness of content, not allowing content scraping or stealing content from other sites.  Google Penguin Update The 2012 Google Penguin Update focused on backlinks. Prior to this update, it was all about the number of backlinks over the quality. Immediately after Penguin, the relevance and quality of backlinks became a lot more important than quantity because Google had recognized that people were abusing it. That is another reason why Damon doesn't focus on backlink quantity. Mobilegeddon  Mobilegeddon was another algorithm update. It focused on emphasizing the value of mobile-friendly web designs. These updates were about improving the quality of the websites that Google recommends. It all comes back to a good page look, a good user experience, and good content. If we deliver good content then our site will rank well. “Long story short, I don't care about algorithm updates because as long as you're not trying to game the system, you're always going to be on the upside.” - Damon Burton Good Content As we've discussed, having quality content is essential for SEO. Good content has a good site structure where users and Google can find everything easily and identify the product or service that we offer. Good content is also unique, not the same as what everyone else is doing. It should speak to our readers' problems and pain points and put us in a position of authority to speak to those things. How Damon's Team Used Keyword Research to Create Content For the Utah Jazz's Team Store When Damon was working with the Utah Jazz team store, they were thinking about what their campaign could monetize. They didn't want to rank number one on Google for random word bragging rights; they wanted to rank for something they could profit on. So they did keyword research, starting with relevancy and looking for what people were searching forーwhich keywords were more relevant to their audience for their product or service.  The Utah Jazz's retail division needed to attract buyers for newer players like Donovan Mitchell, but they also wanted to sell merchandise for legacy players like Karl Malone. They looked into what people were searching about these players, and through the research found something that they never would have thought about. People were searching, “how did Karl Malone die,” but Karl Malone isn't dead. It was a great find for them because no one else was going to be writing about that. It didn't matter that the customer was wrong, that's what they were searching for. That was an opportunity to consider unique topic ideas like “10 Myths of How Karl Malone Died” that addressed customer's concerns, and it was the only thing that directly addressed the customer's intent.  Just because a word has high competition or low search volume doesn't mean we should say no. In fact, quite often, the words that have little search volume are the best ones to target because they are the most immediately relevant to our product or service. Would we rather have a word that people search 1,000 times and get one conversion from it, or would we rather have a word that people search 100 times, but we get 10 conversions? The payout is what matters. Being Human on Social Media to Build Relationships We are constantly bombarded with influencers showing us their spotless houses, perfect bodies, and expensive cars. We've become numb to this stuff, which is why it can be very rewarding to be human and vulnerable. It really stands out when someone posts something in their messy house where their kid just broke something. It feels real and we're able to connect with that person because they're being human. Damon always tries to keep his posts relatable, so that his followers will trust him. He talks about real problems people face with SEO or with being a parent, which helps in building his expertise. Then when they are ready for the product or service he offers, they come to him and say, “how do we get started” because they already have that relationship. “You have a scalable, quantifiable return, and you have a better client because they know what you do.” - Damon Burton Damon made a post on LinkedIn that resonated with a gentleman who reached out to Damon. He said he was considering SEO, and he'd like to meet with Damon. They met about a week later, and shortly after the meeting, the gentleman called Damon and said that most marketing meetings he leaves more confused than when he came in. With Damon's meeting, however, Damon explained why he should and shouldn't work with SEO National.  The gentleman ended up becoming a client, and two weeks later, he introduced Damon to his neighbor, who worked for a law firm and also became a client. Shortly after, the attorney-client asked Damon if he could introduce him to the Utah Jazz because he was the exiting vice president of the retail division responsible for filling the marketing roles before he left. Damon ended up getting the contract with the Utah Jazz. So within the span of about a month, he got three new clients all from one authentic post on LinkedIn. Because of quality content creation and credible authenticity, Damon was connected with Jazz. He never would have been able to do that even if he had spent $1,000,000 on paid ads. Being Human with Our Teams “Highly engaged teams show 21% greater profitability.” (Source: Forbes.com) Damon has a remote team of about 30 people that he's been working with for about 14 years. Most of them he has never met in person. Despite that, he has very close connections with all of his team members.  Two of them have asked him to be the godfather for their child. One almost named their kid after him. When two of them were getting married in the Philippines and Damon couldn't make it because his wife was pregnant, they ordered a 6-foot tall cardboard cutout of him. Cardboard Damon was in the wedding pictures and stood in the line behind the bride and groom. The emotional ties and connection Damon has with his team aren't possible without being vulnerable and being human. Future of SEO Damon believes that whatever the future holds, virtual reality, augmented reality, or something that doesn't exist yet, it will rely on the same things it does now: trustworthy, unique content that's accessible quickly and easily. As long as we understand the importance of establishing ourselves as credible, we won't have to care too much about the future. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Damon for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: Don't attempt to use keyword stuffing. Seek after quality backlinks, not the quantity of low-quality backlinks. As long as we are creating quality content people want to read and link to, we probably don't need to be worried about Google's latest algorithm. Good content is unique, easily accessible, speaks to our readers' problems and pain points, and puts us in a position of authority to speak to those things. Be human on social media and with our teams to establish strong relationships. 7 Ways You Can Make Sure Your Website Isn't Falling Behind the Times

Is your website hip and modern – or is it out-of-date and sad? If it's been a while since you updated your site, there's at least a chance that it's a dud. That doesn't mean it's poorly designed, but it does mean that it's your job to give it an honest evaluation and update it if it's not good enough. Fortunately, an update doesn't mean a full redesign. Here are 7 simple things you can do to make sure your website is offering the user experience and value your customers deserve. #1: Optimize for Voice Search One of the biggest problems I see with websites is that many are using keywords that haven't been updated in years. The days of short, generalized keywords are long past. Instead, focus on voice search, which is already important and on the rise. As of 2020, 50% of all searches will be voice-based. With virtual assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Cortana more popular than ever, it's safe to assume that a hefty percentage of the people who land on your site will get there via voice search. #2: Add Structured Landing Pages Structured landing pages have content that's easy for Google to interpret. They provide context for your content and identify how it relates to your metadata. The best-known tool for structuring your content is Schema markup. Schema provides a vocabulary that web developers can use to structure data around people, places and things on the web. When you add Schema markup to your site, it delivers rich snippets and rich cards as part of your search result on Google — making it easy for users to choose your site over the others that are available. #3: Update Your SEO Optimizing your website takes times, which is why a lot of companies do it only when they notice a big drop in their traffic. If it's been a while since you updated your SEO, then it's time to take another look. Why? Because Google updates its algorithm constantly. The most important update in the past few years has to do with relevance. Google Rank Brain, which is now part of Google's search algorithm, prioritizes sites based on their overall relevance to the term being searched. It measures bounce rates and the amount of time visitors spend on your site. The longer you can get them to stay – something that'll happen if you provide tons of relevant content – the better off you'll be. #4: Be Ready for Mobile There's really no reason for any website not to be mobile optimized at this point. Google rolled out its Mobilegeddon update back in 2015. That's when they started to penalize sites that weren't mobile optimized. It's not enough to have a mobile site now. You need a site that's perfectly optimized for mobile users. That means that mobile visitors can get the same content and functionality as a visitor using a desktop computer regardless of which device they're using. Some things that are particularly important are having buttons that are right-sized for mobile users, content that's easy to read with no teeny fonts or horizontal scrolling, and access to ALL the relevant content on your site – not just a few things. #5: Gather Some Social Proof Social proof can take many forms. Some of the most common kinds of social proof are: Customer reviews Customer testimonials Consumer ratings “Best Of” awards Industry awards Industry certifications There's plenty of research that shows that people give just as much importance to third-party reviews online as they would to a recommendation from a trusted friend. If you're not including some type of social proof on your website, then you're missing out on an opportunity to show casual visitors to your site that they can trust you. #6: Improve Your Page Loading Time How quickly does your website load? If the answer is more than four seconds, then it's a virtual certainty that you're losing visitors as a result. After just three seconds, approximately 53% of mobile users will navigate away from a site and try another one. The numbers are just as bad for des...

Published Mar 23, 2018 Chris Hogan: Good day all, Chris Hogan and Andrew Groat come to you live from Me Media studio here in Burleigh for episode 80 of 'Get Fact Up'. And today we're talking about... Andrew Groat: The new mobile update for Google, the Google search. Chris Hogan: Look out peeps. Are you in for some trouble if you don't get this right? Andrew Groat: So last year Google rolled out what everyone affectionately named "Mobilegeddon", where it started marking down people's websites, or penalising people's websites that didn't have mobile friendliness. So that's been in effect for probably a year now I'd say. And the way that worked, it would check your website, see if it was mobile friendly. If it wasn't mobile friendly, you would be pushed further down the results. So that's been going for a bit and we've said that before, that you really need to take that seriously, because they're only gonna get more heavy handed with that. The mobile usage is growing. It's not changing, it's growing exponentially and now we've got like Google voice search, iPhone voice search, Siri voice search ... Sorry Alexa voice search. Chris Hogan: Yeah. Andrew Groat: And all of that is only showing mobile results, so it's only going further that way. And now Google have gone a little bit further with that new indexing strategy, and they're about to roll out a new thing called Mobile First Indexing, where they only check the mobile version of your website. Only index the mobile version. If you don't have a mobile version, they don't even look. Chris Hogan: You will not be on Google's search results, if you don't have a mobile website. Andrew Groat: So it's only something that they're slowly rolling out now. They're testing it on a couple of websites, but they will be rolling it out, they're 100% confirmed on that. So, that is a problem for people that don't have mobile friendly websites. Chris Hogan: You're warned. You're warned. And there's still people that don't have mobile websites. Some of them have by their [inaudible 00:02:10] credit a really dodgy version of their desktop version, and said, "This will do." And what's that gonna do for them Andrew? Andrew Groat: Well that means only that dodgy version will be in the search results now. Chris Hogan: Yeah. Andrew Groat: So, if you have a really, really good desktop site, doesn't matter. So the big thing here is, you shouldn't have a separate mobile version of the website. And I've done a bit of research this morning and we've always said responsive web design is the way to go. 100%. So you... To explain that a little bit better. If you have a mobile version of your website, that's when you have ABC.com.au as your desktop website, and then maybe M.ABC.com.au as your mobile only website. That's the only thing that's gonna be indexed now, is the mobile website. Chris Hogan: Yeah. Andrew Groat: So if you've got a kind of crappy version of your main website as your mobile site, then kiss the good one goodbye. Chris Hogan: And responsive websites are the ones that basically resize. So, they should be designed to resize from a desktop view, down to an iPad view, down to different width iPhone ... Sorry, phone widths, mobile phone widths. And it should show the same content. Andrew Groat: The same information, yeah. It should. Chris Hogan: And that's great and the reason why people should have done it that way, or should be doing it that way, is because it means that when you update your website, which might be from a laptop computer, most of the time... Or sorry, a desktop computer. Then what you're seeing on your desktop is what you're also gonna see on your mobile. And then it's just a quick check, "yep, displays fine." Done. And the content is exactly the same. So, you haven't had to do it in two places and be all tricky. And yeah, now if you don't have it, you're not gonna show on Google's search results, so. Andrew Groat: So you have to sort of ask yourself... You may not know if you have a responsive website or you just have a mobile version or something else. But you have to ask yourself, "When I look at my website on the phone, is it a different experience in terms of the content and information to someone on the desktop?" If it is, that's a problem. So Google's only gonna be reading the mobile version. Google is only checking your phone on a mobile, and it's only using that content to put it in the search results. So that could have a huge impact on your SEO. If you have cut down versions of all your text or you have cut down versions of anything. Or you just literally not showing certain pages, they're gone. Chris Hogan: Crazy. Andrew Groat: So there's a couple of ways you can check this. Chris Hogan: That was my next question. Andrew Groat: So Google has the mobile testing tool, we'll put a link to that down at the bottom. Now one thing about that, it's about to be updated. So when Google releases this update, they're also gonna have an updated version of this mobile friendly test. So you can check that now, and it might say it's okay, there might be a couple of things you need to fix up. As soon as they re-release this indexing update, you can guarantee they'll have a new version of this mobile testing tool. So keep on top of that. But the best way to test, and this may be a little bit over people's heads, and we can put some links in to get this setup. You need Search Console, that's Google Search Console, and that's what all of us webmasters use to keep on top of errors on a website. So if there's any errors showing up on a website, Google's crawled a page and then suddenly change the name of that page and it can't find it anymore. Search Console will send you an email for that. So inside Search Console, there is a dropdown called Search Traffic. At the bottom of that there's one called Mobile Usability, and they've said the best way to guarantee that you're gonna be okay for this new Mobile First Indexing change, is to check that page. So if you have any errors on that page, which means that Google can't check some of your pages because it's not mobile usable, then you need to get on top of that. And if you have anything on there that says it can't crawl your website, on the Mobile Usability page, you need to get on top of that, because that's Google trying to check your website as a mobile phone. So that's the best place to look. Chris Hogan: Cool. So, to recap, when does this come out? Andrew Groat: They're already rolling it out. Chris Hogan: It's now. Andrew Groat: They're testing it ... They said they're testing it on a select few websites right now. Chris Hogan: Right. Andrew Groat: And then it's gonna be rolled out country by country, so. Chris Hogan: Heck yeah. Andrew Groat: Even as we're saying this, it's probably already starting. Chris Hogan: And what's our average across our clients, what's the average number of searches via mobile at the moment? Andrew Groat: It's about 50%, it's probably more like 60 to 65%, is mobile traffic. And depending on what industry you're in, it's probably higher. Like we have some clients that are up to 80% mobile. Anything that involves ticketing for some reason, is always a lot higher. Even these days, e-commerce is a lot higher. E-commerce used to only happen on desktop, it's more that 50% on mobile now. People are becoming more trusting to putting credit card details through mobile. It's getting easier, there's better payment systems now. Chris Hogan: You can save your credit card details on your phone, just like you can on your laptop. Andrew Groat: Your AfterPay, PayPal, it's a lot more secure now so. Chris Hogan: Yeah. Andrew Groat: Yeah, very serious. Chris Hogan: Very serious guys. So if you aren't taking this seriously, then say goodbye to 60, 80% of your traffic from Google search results. Andrew Groat: If not all of it. If you don't have a mobile version, you're probably gonna be gone. Chris Hogan: Give us a call if you need help, we're here to spread the love. Andrew will give you a big cuddle. Andrew Groat: Over the phone. Chris Hogan: Consult, console you. Andrew Groat: And then we'll figure out a solution. Chris Hogan: Yeah. Andrew Groat: After the cuddle. Chris Hogan: Yeah. We do virtual cuddles. Thanks very much Andrew, that was very insightful. Thanks for watching guys. 'Get Fact Up' is available on MeMedia.com.au, also available on our Facebook page and on YouTube. In today's episode, Lionel Johnston, and CJOB radio host Kevin Burgin discuss small business marketing.  I represented Farmers Marketing on CJOB with guest host Kevin Burgin on April 24, 2017, and we spent most of our time talking about small business marketing. I was asked several questions, but with being on-air and having limited time, my answers were very short. Check out our interview below. However, in an effort to share full information, I have provided the complete answers below the audio link.   1. Does every business need a website? Yes! I said this succinct answer jokingly, but seriously, this question should never be asked ever again. The internet is over 20 years old and while it is still in its infancy it is not a fad. If your business doesn’t exist online, you simply don’t exist. If you aren’t able to get a website set up quickly, at a minimum create a detailed Facebook business page.  2. What common mistakes do many small businesses make on their website? Too much info: Many treat their website like a digital Encylopedia, instead of treating is like their #1 sales rep. Inconsistent design, content and function: as a business grows it is common for more people to ask to add things to your website. Over time, your site becomes fat and loses its purpose. Technical issues: High blood pressure is nicknamed the silent killer. Technical issues are similar for your website as you often don’t see the issues that are hurting your traffic and conversion rates. For example, there are still many sites that are not responsive, meaning they work well whether you are on a desktop, a tablet, or a smartphone. Google implemented a new algorithm called ‘Mobilegeddon’ in 2015. In short, this algorithm change rewards mobile-friendly websites … which also is the same as penalizing websites that are not mobile-friendly. If you can only fix one thing on your website this year, making your website responsive would be the #1 thing to fix! 3. How to use small business marketing to build an online presence? Slowly. It is easy to get caught in the trap where you try a Facebook post or ad and you don’t get waves of customers crashing through your front door. Some things hit big right away but most growth will grow over time. The most important objective, in my opinion, is to think about your customers or audience first. Who are they? What do they care about? What are their needs and how can you help them? Find a way to add value to them and as you gain trust and a reputation, you will also build an audience.  4. What is SEO? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. To keep it simple, basically, SEO helps Google understand what content you have which helps match the content online to the search query a user had. Think of it this way. If you upload an image, Google can’t see what the image is, but if you add alt tags to the photos such as “Red Mustang convertible beach palm trees summer”.  SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial” or “natural” search results on search engines. – Search Engine Land 5. Why Blog? Because Google says so :). Google rewards businesses that produce unique and consistent content that people engage with. Working to do what Google wants is generally a good business practice in today’s digital world. Blogging is a great forum for you to share your expertise, insight and philosophies. Having a robust blog covering relevant information is a great resource for you when dealing with your customers. When they have questions you can direct them to a thorough and well-produced blog post.  BONUS TIP: Not sure what to blog about? Create a list of your top 10 most asked questions. Then write a detailed post answering each question. See more blogs from Farmers Marketing on the Farmers Report: a blog for lovers of marketing and growing small businesses.  6. What to look for in a digital marketing contractor? We didn’t’ have time for this question on air, but it is a very important topic. Marketing has changed forever. Assuming you have watched Mad Men, there are still many marketing agencies that want to run 100% of a company’s marketing functions. For some very large brands, that practice still exists today but it is becoming less common. One major reason for this shift is digital marketing activities seem like one discipline, but it is actually is a collection of many specialized disciplines. For example, you have SEO, graphic design, website design, content creation, video production, email marketing, blogging, pay per click advertising, UX, and so on. In each one of these specialties, you could spend your career honing your skills. If a contractor tells you they can do EVERYTHING for your business they are simply wrong.  7. What should a business owner do first? Go to Google and learn the importance of digital marketing. I suggest this because many agencies and experts like to throw around ten-dollar words to confuse you and show your importance. At a high-level, digital marketing is simple to understand: Digital marketing (also known as data-driven marketing) is an umbrella term for the marketing of products or services using digital technologies, mainly on the Internet, but also including mobile phones, display advertising, and any other digital medium. – Wikipedia As a business, it is critically important to get a basic understanding of digital marketing. You want to be prepared for when a contractor tells you they can “make a new website for you, but it won’t be responsive.”, you need to know enough to politely stand-up and leave the meeting.  Google has upwards of 500 updates per year which is a pretty good reason to have an expert in your corner. If it helps you feel better, even website experts are challenged to keep up with all the changes. Yes, there is a lot to know, but it is simple at the same time. So, don’t get overwhelmed or intimidated. You can do this. Let me leave you with this: Over 50% of people pick up their smartphone immediately when they wake up. The digital world is here to stay and your customers, are like you – they live online. So make the commitment today to get started with digital marketing. You can’t do everything but you can do something. If you enjoyed the Master Modern Marketing podcast, please subscribe, rate and review the show.

Warning! If your website is NOT mobile friendly as of May, 2016, you're in BIG trouble. This has been a long time coming, however now it looks like we're about to see some serious action from our friends over at Google. 'Mobilegeddon' as it was named by the industry last year refers to the algorithm update that Google released last year, favouring websites that are mobile friendly. Due to the increased use of mobile devices like phones and tablets, Google released an update that favours websites that are optimised to mobile, over those that aren't on searches that come through a mobile device. This basically means that if someone is searching for you from a mobile device and your website is NOT mobile friendly, then it has less chance of showing up in a search query than another website that has been optimised for mobile. As of May, 2016, Google has announced that it is going to be progressively increasing this signal, meaning that if you're not mobile responsive, you're in big trouble. This is going to have a serious effect on businesses that choose not to act, so I strongly encourage anyone that this is going to effect, click on the link below, so we can get your mobile friendly website set up for you ASAP. This week, Chris Bevolo, Adam Meyer and Chris Boyer deliver a short and simple podcast focused primarily on Chris Boyer’s interview with ehealthcarstrategy.com about the impact of mobile on SEO (search engine optimization). In it, they discuss how hospitals should evolve their websites to adopt a mobile-first strategy, and how Google’s new SEO algorithm is continually evolving to meet the ongoing movement to mobile. Of course, the conversation wavers to briefly address the Cecil the Dentist controversy…but still, this is an enjoyable (and short) techie podcast!
