In this episode, Sarah talks to Kelli Dunham, who is a nurse, comedian, author, LGBTQ+ leader, educator, performer, author, caregiver, and storyteller, and maybe I'm missing something because she is so many things! However, despite outward appearances, she is not a gym teacher or a 12-year-old boy. Kelli was also an aspiring nun at one point, but her “insufficient docility” made this career choice a bad fit. I guess they call it a convent for a reason. (It's conventional.) She started telling jokes to her dairy cows as a kid in Wisconsin and found that they were sometimes better audience members than the comedy bros she encountered at open mics when she first started doing comedy. Kelli found other places to explore stand-up and storytelling, like conferences for health care professionals, Pride events, workplaces, The Moth, and the Edinburgh Fringe. Through being a natural caregiver and her own life experiences, Kelli takes her comedy where no one else dares to go. Her most recent one-person show is Second Helping: Two Dead Girlfriends, Dead Funny. And yes, it is about her two partners who died, but it's really about how to ask for help. Kelli believes that “laughing is a revolutionary gesture” which is the coolest quote ever. How do you solve a problem like Kelli Dunham? Ian Robb and James Stephens are singers and musicians based near Ottawa who have had a front row seat to the evolution of the Canadian folk music and sea music communities since the ‘70s and have played with groups such as The Friends of Fiddler's Green and Finest Kind. They have just released a new album, Declining with Thanks that contains a mix of traditional and composed songs and, of course, some songs of the sea. In this wide-ranging episode, we explore the ever-present and timely themes of war, love, and loss that make certain songs resonate across generations. We also dive deeply into Ian's experiences with the folk revival in the UK in the ‘60s, and how the traditional music scene in Toronto came to take on its own unique character.  ⚓︎ Shanties featured: - Opening credits: Paddy Doyle's Boots, trad. arranged by Pressgang Mutiny - Live song: Heave Away Me Johnny, trad. arranged by Ian Robb and James Stephens- Recorded song: Dead Funny, written by Brian Pearson, arranged by Ian Robb and James Stephens- Recorded song: Daft Annie, written by Ian Robb, arranged by Ian Robb and James Stephens - Live song: All Things are Quite Silent, trad. arranged by Ian Robb- Recorded song: I Wish They'd Do It Now, trad. arranged by The Friends of Fiddler's Green- Recorded tune: Kilkenny Jig, trad. Today my guest is Mitzi Weiland, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and creator of the podcast Dead Funny Dead Serious. In this episode: - Mitzi was a bartender and artist before her mother was diagnosed with terminal stage 4 cancer (her father and grandfather also passed away when she was 7). Then she started looking into volunteering at hospices and senior centers (bingo is ruthless) and started to school to be a geriatric mental health specialist. - She then took a grief class and learned why she uses humor to deal with her grief (it was very eye opening). - Mitzi was raised by a grieving mother and it was never addressed. She was using humor to deflect.- Humor is absolutely a healthy coping mechanism- if it's ONE of your tools. - Every tool should be used in moderation. Netflix is great until you start watching it for 24 hours a day and stop going to work. Wine is a great tool until it's not. - Using humor to deflect vs to cope is a fine and personal line- Going to local comedy clubs and listening to comedians using the platform to process and cope with loss. - Why we have so much death anxiety in American culture (we're living longer so palliative and deathcare is actually a new concept)- The new movement surrounding death positivity and how that's not the space grieving people are in - Grievers are shunned for sharing their feelings- We hashtag and label everything so we put everything and everyone in a box. You can be happy, grieving, and angry all at the same time- Grief groups are often filled with laughter - Turning her mom's ashes into a lawn gnomeFor more information about Death Is Hilarious, visit deathishilarious.com To get in touch, email deathishilarious@gmail.com. But there some exceptions such as Resident Evil (First MOVIE), Shaun of the Dead (Funny), World War Z, and now Army of the Dead. Those are the only zombie movies I like the rest they can burn because they are so predictable. Anyway, enjoy this quick review and maybe I do more, will see. "I wanted to be a comedian & a grief therapist. I did one of those things- and added LMFT after my name. Not funny, but useful and so full of purpose. I love my job. But I wanted to add useful content to the public domain. The things I learned in graduate school- that made me aware of the death traumas (almost) all of us carry around on the daily. Some more training in grief & death (thanatology) and the desire to share these new concepts was busting. Social Media was just so dang daunting- talking about death online? Um. Some people were not a fan. And THEY LET YOU KNOW. But I persisted. A series of bad TikTok's. Terrible-looking Insta posts. A few live videos. I apologize to you all -you can't un-see that. But the series- 30 EOL Doulas in 30 Days was born. And ta-da- it felt right- we were speaking to (and being useful to) both EOLD's and the public. I look forward to offering you more of these series!" See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Submission guidelines can be found at TallTaleTV.com ---- About Tall Tale TV ---- My name is Chris Herron, and I narrate audiobooks. In 2015, poor control of my diabetes left me legally blind for the better part of a year. The doctors predicted an 80% chance I would never see again, but I changed the way I was living and through sheer willpower beat the odds. During this time I couldn't read or write. Two things that I had been turning to for comfort since I was a small child. With the sheer amount of stress I was under, this was devastating. My wife took me by the arm, lead me into the local library, and read out titles of audiobooks to me. I chose the audiobook versions of books I had loved such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter and more. They brought my favorite stories to life in ways I never thought possible and helped me through the darkest time of my life. Once my vision recovered, I maintained a love for audiobooks. I decided I would turn my focus from being a writer to becoming a narrator. I devised Tall Tale TV as a way to help out all the amazing authors in the writing communities I had come to love before my ordeal. I created Tall Tale TV to help aspiring authors by providing them with a promotional audiobook video. A way to showcase their skills with the written word. This week's a mostly clipless week on Succotash. Stockpiling a bunch for the next episode while I devote the majority of Epi53 to my interview with Matt Weinhold. In addition to his long history as a standup comedian, Matt's be involved in writing and helping to produce a lot of television, web, and film projects as well. Included in that dossier: Writer and voice actor for MTV’s The Super Adventure Team; a writer and co-creator with Greg Proops on The Amazing Colossal Show, appeared in the Star Trek documentary Trekkies, written on tons of other TV including BBC America’s The Nerdist, Style Network’s The Dish, and used to be part of the Fashion Police commentary team for US magazine. You can also still get Matt's comedy CD, Dead Funny, by clicking on the link or on iTunes. In the realm of podcasting, Matt's been podguesting with the likes of Jackie Kashian on Dork Forest and more frequently on The Dana Gould Hour. But he's in the process of turning what was a YouTube experiment into a full on video/audio podcast and we talk (and play) a bit from his Monster Party concept during our interview. (Fair notice: We recorded the interview at the Coffee Fix in Studio City, CA. While it's a great place for coffee, the cavernous space, loud background music, blenders, grinders, and clanking utensils made for a listener-challenging environment. We've done what we could to pull out some of the room noise but there are portions of the interview that are somewhat hard to hear. Apologies. Welcome to the world of guerrilla podcasting...) THE COUNTDOWN Rather than do a straight-ahead Top 10 countdown from this week's Stitcher's Top 100 Comedy Podcasts — because the 'casts at the top don't seem to change very much - this week we introduce "The 10 Most Active in the Stitcher Top 100 Comedy Podcast List"! It was based on an idea I got from Ed Wallick, host of the Don't Quit Your Daycast podcast. I've ranked ten shows by their relative position on the chart, but also included the number of spaces they moved in the past week. Or points they go - I can't really figure out that that up or down number is supposed to represent considering that one of the shows — SModcast — moved DOWN 101 points on a chart that only has 100 spaces. 14. Girl On Guy with Aisha Tyler +2441. Bullseye with Jesse Thorn +1446. SModcast -10152. The Onion +5561. The David Feldman Show -2664. Superego +8571. Alonzo Bodden: Who’s Paying Attention? +2980. Sex Squad +1391. Loveline +2499. The Ricky Gervais Podcast -20 CORRECTIONS DEPARTMENT Phil Leirness Last week I played a clip from the Chillpak Hollywood Hour, one of the first podcasts I ever listened to, and I mentioned that hosts Phil Leirness and Dean Haglund had been doing the show for over 4 years. My bad. It’s been SIX years. Not only that, I incorrectly gave their website. It’s ChillpakHollywood.com (As I did mentioned last show, they DO still have a MySpace page, though.) I’m told that my voicemail apology to them will be a special guest on the next episode of CHH. Just got word that pre-production is underway on The Lady Killers, a new feature film by Phil and Dean. If you get a chance, check out their enthralling documentary The Truth Is Out There. ME BEING ME I'm a guest on the latest Seven Days A Geek episode of Podcasting 101. The Angry Ginger and I chat it up about how simple it really is to kick off a show, how to figure out what a podcast should be about and a bunch of other inside baseball chatter. Click on the show link and check it out for some good (mostly) clean conversation about the blood n' guts of podcasting. SING IT, CHET Chet Haase Friend-of-Succotash Chet Haase has sent along a nifty little ditty in the wake of the changing of the Pope called Papal Reign, a parody to Prince's Purple Rain. It's timely and funny and you'll find it at the tail end of Epi53. Thanks, Chet! DON'T FORGET DURST Our Ambassador to the Middle Will Durst offers a litany of things that go awry as we move into Upper Middle age in this week's Burst O' Durst. I also get into our TweetSack a bit this week, including some real honest-to-God emails. I read off a long list of Twitter handles from folks who have retweeted, favorited and otherwise been kind to Succotash this past week. It's really appreciated and makes doing the show worthwhile knowing that people are enjoying the experience and sharing that enjoyment with others. Or, as I like to think about it, passing the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
