Send us a textJames Jackson, president of the Call on Me Foundation, shares an incredible story of transformation from his time in the Marine Corps to starting a powerful nonprofit. With heartfelt sincerity, he reveals the personal experiences and passions that led him to provide crucial support for families of veterans who have passed away unexpectedly. These families often face challenges in silence, and James, alongside ambassadors like Leslie, is creating a community through shared experiences and support. Our conversation explores his transition into the construction industry and the founding of the foundation in February 2023, driven by a mission to aid families affected by military suicides, including poignant stories like that of Greg Gillum's family.Guiding us through the meticulous process of determining which families receive aid, James highlights the importance of assessing genuine need. The foundation's collaborations with other nonprofits, such as Tunnels to Towers, showcase the power of partnerships in enhancing support for veterans. Fundraising is a cornerstone of the foundation's efforts, with events like the September gathering at Cisco Brewery, an annual reunion, and the Memorial Day MURPH fitness challenge. These gatherings not only raise essential funds but also foster a sense of community and solidarity among veterans and their families. As the conversation unfolds, James addresses the broader challenges facing nonprofits, such as securing donations and increasing awareness. By collaborating with organizations like One Man, One Mic Foundation and the Warrior Golf Academy, the foundation amplifies its impact, offering diverse resources like equine therapy and focusing on Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) treatments. The episode wraps up with a powerful message on building bridges between foundations, emphasizing community connections, and includes a public service announcement with vital resources like 988 and 211 for veterans and their families.

Here at Vitalyst, one of our programmatic priorities is to support statewide housing initiatives along the spectrum of housing types. The past few years, this has meant a lot of capacity building for organizations, whether that is schools or, more recently, churches, to explore creating housing options for members of our community. This also means we collaborate with a lot of partners, including the Arizona Housing Coalition. In this episode of the Defence Connect Podcast, Renee Wilson joins host Phil Tarrant to announce the rebrand of War Widows NSW to the Families of Veterans Guild, a rebranded organisation which aims to support all family members of veterans. The podcast begins by detailing the reason behind the rebrand and how the organisation will support all family members of veterans who have quietly served behind ADF members. Wilson then details the background of War Widows NSW and how the newly rebranded Families of Veterans Guild is rising to the challenge to fill the gaps between existing veterans' organisations, by supporting family members of veterans who may not meet stringent eligibility criteria. The pair then unpack how the Families of Veterans Guild differs from existing veterans' groups and how the guild will play a role alongside other veterans' organisations to help serve former ADF members and their families. What do rising interest rates and skyrocketing rents mean for the housing market? Should you rent or should you buy? Having a good grasp on mortgage financials in a rising interest rate environment with inflationary pressures can often mean saving (or losing) thousands of dollars. Hear Loan Officer Liz Conrad break down how the larger economic picture matters when taking out a mortgage and how you can select the best type of mortgage for your situation, whether you're a first time homebuyer or seasoned real estate investor. Hear Liz discuss: how being a loan officer can be a great “portable” job for EFMs how FS clients can close mortgage loans from overseas, even in remote areas with no internet (hint: it's difficult, but not impossible) what happens when a mortgage gets sold and where does it go? differences between a primary, secondary and investment mortgage loan (and which types allow you to rent out your house and when!) why interest rates are already going up in anticipation of the Fed's interest rate increase and what this means for home buyers and renters …and so much more! Liz Conrad is a former EFM and Senior Loan Officer with George Mason Mortgage. Liz is licensed in 13 states to include MD, VA, DC, PA, DE, WV, KY, TN, OH, NC, SC, GA & FL and specializes in helping Foreign Service, DOD and Veteran Families to finance primary, second homes or investment properties while still living abroad. When people ask us at Nation's Finest, "What do you do?" it's easy to start listing programs and services. In reality, what we do goes deeper than a list of services. We help veterans when they need it most, and assist them in becoming self-sufficient again. One veteran shares his story today, and explains how Nation's Finest helped him. Andre Jones is a U.S. Army Veteran who has lived in the Yuba County, CA area for 12 years. After getting an education and serving in the military, Mr. Jones became a pillar in his community by coaching football and softball for local high school and college students. He was also a limo driver for 30 years. This past year, Mr. Jones found himself homeless for the first time in his life. When he lost his house, it was a struggle to find housing due to the recent fires in Northern California. Thankfully, he ended up getting connected with a Case Manager from Nation's Finest, who arrived just in time to help him find a place to live. That Case Manager is Shelly Forbes, also here with us for this episode. She works at the Nation's Finest-Chico location for our SSVF (Supportive Services for Veteran Families) program, which provides case management to veterans and their families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Shelly befriended Mr. Jones, encouraged him, and helped him get approved for his own apartment that he is now living in.
This episode of Borne the Battle – a benefits breakdown – features HUD-VASH, a collaborative program between HUD and VA that provides support to help homeless Veterans and their families – and those at risk of becoming homeless – to find and sustain permanent housing.Veterans Matter is one of the many nonprofits which work alongside and enhance HUD-VASH's ability to reduce homelessness among Veterans.According to the 2020 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress, there were 37,252 homeless Veterans in 2020, and 15,204 of those Veterans were unsheltered. For Meghan Deal, national director of the HUD-VASH Program, and Ken Leslie, a former homeless man and founder of Veterans Matter, these troubling statistics are an indication of the importance of their work. In this episode of Borne the Battle, Deal and Leslie answer these questions and more: What motivates them to help Veterans despite not being Veterans themselves? What does help from HUD-VASH and nonprofits like Veterans Matter look like? What makes a Veteran eligible for HUD-VASH assistance? What makes a Veteran “homeless?” How can people get involved with helping homeless Veterans in their community? If you are a Veteran who is homeless or at risk of homelessness, call 1-877-424-3838 for immediate assistance. The HUD-VASH program also has resources geared specifically for the Native American Veteran population. For tribes that are interested in providing rental assistance and supportive services to Native American Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, read up on Tribal HUD-VASH and considering submitting an application.Having access to safe and adequate housing is a human right. If you know a Veteran who is homeless or at imminent risk of being homeless, encourage them to call VA for assistance. There are people working for and alongside VA, like Deal and Leslie, who are committed to rooting out homelessness and are standing by ready to help.Borne the Battle Veterans of the Week: Marine Veteran Darin T. Do you wake up feeling unfocused, unsure what to work on first or what direction to take your business in? My client, Lara Williams, is joining me in this episode to talk about how we've created what I love to call a Runway to Freedom to clear all of those up. A Runway to Freedom could mean a lot of different things to different organizations, but in this case, it meant creating an operating system to help bring back excitement, energy, accountability, and growth in Lara's business. Lara is talking about what the business looked like before, what the struggles were, and what areas we worked on. You'll hear how we reorganized meetings, positions, hiring processes, and more to create a business structure that could handle growth. Lara Williams, InteCare Chief Operating Officer, has 20 years of experience working in community mental health developing programs and training that focus on recovery and a person-centered approach. Since her start at InteCare in 2010, she has helped to establish the CARF-accredited Supportive Services for Veteran Families program and developed and supervised a 2nd Chance Re-entry Grant in collaboration with the Indiana Department of Correction. Lara was key in establishing Allies of Indiana, a peer-run organization with a focus on bringing innovative peer-run initiatives to Indiana, and has served as their Executive Director for 9 years. During her tenure, she has helped the organization to become a national leader in Emotional CPR (eCPR) training, receiving multi-year grants from the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction to provide eCPR training across Indiana, assisting with the development of eCPR Canada and the development of a Youth eCPR model. Less than 2% of our nation's population serve in the Armed Services. Veterans and Veteran Families share a unique background, creating a specific segment within our nation with unique care requirements. Our elite Special Operations Forces have recognized this truth for the past several years, creating an innovative approach to Warrior and Warrior Family wellness and performance through the U.S. Special Operations Command Perseveration of the Force and Family (POTFF) initiative. POTFF was created to ensure our elite Warriors and their Families remain healthy, whole, and well through two decades of continuous combat operations.

Army Veteran Nathan Goncalves applied to UCLA’s Law school to study corporate law. He was accepted, but a bitter divorce, where his military mental health history was used against him, hampered those plans. Through his own experiences, Goncalves realized there was no advocacy for situations like his own. So he sacrificed a potentially lucrative corporate law career and switched to family law to offer services to homeless and low-income Veterans.

On June 10, 2010, Jeffrey W. McClurken delivered the banner lecture "Take Care of the Living: Reconstructing Confederate Veteran Families" The Civil War ended in spring 1865, but for Confederate veterans and their families, its consequences persisted far longer as they began to pick up the pieces of their civilian lives in the devastated South. In his new book, Jeffrey W. McClurken assesses the wide-ranging effects of the war on Confederate veteran families in Southside Virginia. Coming to terms with postwar reality on an individual level meant reconstructing the household and seeking jobs and financial assistance. It also involved the state in providing replacement limbs for amputees, pensions, and homes for old soldiers and widows. These changes would influence the shape of southern society for generations to come. Dr. McClurken teaches history at the University of Mary Washington. (Introduction by Nelson D. Lankford) The content and opinions expressed in these presentations are solely those of the speaker and not necessarily of the Virginia Museum of History & Culture.
