Diana Williams lived a rich life by any measure. She was a wife, a mother, a traveler, and the founder of a job training organization at San Quentin prison in California. But for three decades, Williams was plagued by mysterious symptoms. These included exhaustion, night sweats, brain fog, and throbbing headaches and chills that left her bedridden for days. Specialists diagnosed her with a series of maladies such as multiple sclerosis, Lyme disease, and toxic mold exposure. They prescribed grueling treatments that took up time, money, and ultimately proved unsuccessful. Williams eventually decided enough was enough. In January of this year, she traveled to Dignitas, a “death with dignity” group in Switzerland, and ended her life. In December 2023, just weeks before her “death date,” Williams joined Diane for a conversation about her agonizing choice and why she felt it was so important to tell her story of “a life well lived, a death well planned.”You can read more about Diana Williams's story in her posthumously published memoir, “Traveling Solo.”

First and foremost, as we embark on our "vacation with purpose," we extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for tuning in and supporting Founder Hustle. One of our primary goals in creating this podcast was to assist New Majority founders in breaking free from the deficit mindset. We sincerely hope that, through your engagement, we've been able to realize this aim. In today's episode, Melissa concludes this season by engaging in a conversation with Diana Willians, a familiar voice from our season one finale. Their discussion delves into the significance of taking a step back, as advocated by Mindelyn Anderson, and meticulously examining the data. Diana and Melissa want to craft content that is not only deeply impactful but also offers actionable insights, further enriching your entrepreneurial journey. They reflect on their project's inception, driven by a desire to narrate authentic stories and transition individuals from mere inspiration to decisive action. As they look ahead, this core objective will steadfastly guide their path. In the words of the fictional character John Q, "it's not goodbye, it's see you later." Dan Erickson is the creator and showrunner of Apple TV's Emmy© Award-winning series, SEVERANCE. After attending NYU's Tisch School, where he received a Masters in Dramatic Writing. Upon moving to Los Angeles, he delivered food and worked in a string of office jobs, all while conceiving and writing the original pilot for Severance. The script became the first TV pilot ever selected for the annual Bloodlist, which ultimately led to a creative partnership with Ben Stiller's Red Hour Productions, Endeavor Content, and Apple. Atypically, this also led to Dan becoming Showrunner, retaining huge levels of creative control and driving the production - and the show became an instant cult and critical hit largely due to its powerful and original storyworld. In this episode, Dan talks to fellow storyteller and CEO and co-founder of Kinetic Energy Entertainment, Diana Williams about his career and building the show's mind-bending world. Dan and Diana discuss the intricate process of story world design, exploring how Dan's original play - and real life office experience - inspired the show. Dan relates the journey of the show from concept to screen (and as unknown writer to showrunner) including early pitches and his experiences working with Ben Stiller and Chris Black. We also learn what it means to be a showrunner on your first series and the demanding balancing act of creative and organisational priorities it entails. This includes in particular the focus on tone and how establishing the right tone - and maintaining this - is one of the most important and challenging aspects of the role.

Our guest this week is Diana Williams, who, after 30 years in the entertainment media industry working on premier content like the Star Wars Marvel Cinematic universes, has founded a new company, Kinetic Energy Entertainment, focused on partnering with creatives to build new intellectual property (IP) for today's rapidly changing media landscape. Starting with a clear and holistic definition of IP as being a story world with multiple points of entry for an audience, Diana sees this as a way to honor rich content by developing the ABC's – Audience, Business, Creative – in tandem with specific media formats, thus building authentic engagement with the audience from the start, rather than marketing to them after a product is developed. We look at how entertainment revenue models have changed with streaming, and how business is struggling to change to fit that reality. Talking through one of her current projects, a PC game called Political Arena developed with pundit Eliot Nelson, we get a closer look at some of the strategies that guide this venture, and also the changing role of entertainment as a source of education. Without having the primary goal to educate, entertainment increasingly, if unwittingly, fills that gap, but does that make it a responsibility? While audience demand may still be dragging the legacy entertainment industry kicking and screaming toward changes in representation, that is the tide, and Diana is betting that building entertainment around audience truth is the way to develop solid and loyal fan relationships that will in turn feed into better content.A full transcript of this episode will be available soon! Here are some of the references from this episode, for those who want to dig a little deeper:Diana's company, Kinetic Energy EntertainmentMore about the Peabody Interactive BoardAnd the inaugural Winners for Digital and Interactive Storytelling, which were announced on 3/24/2022Some of the press coverage of Political Arena game:Washington PostNPRWashingtonianMarketWatchMicThe Times UKCheddarSteam page, including the "attack ad" trailer for the gamePolitical Arena creator and HuffPost columnist Eliot Nelson (book, The Beltway Bible)Science and Entertainment ExchangeControversy over whether to recast T'Challa (Black Panther) in the MCUFor more on games-based learning, see:Kurt SquireJames Paul GeeZoe CorwinKatie Salen TakinbasFor more about building out story worlds, check out our previous episodes with Nonny de La Peña, Alex McDowell, and Ann Pendleton-JulianWe've also done several episodes about Transmedia StorytellingFor more on games-based learning, listen to our episode with Kurt Squire and Katie Salen Tekinbas.… and for more discussion of Fast & Furious fandom, check out our previous episode with Sue Ding!Share your thoughts via Twitter with Henry, Colin and the How Do You Like It So Far? account! These informative, insightful ideas, predictions and thoughts have been edited together so you can hear how music and arts experts think digital and tech will impact the sector, and what this might look like. You will hear opinions from: Professor Anatol Lieven of Georgetown University in Qatar, from our first episode ‘The Green New Deal and the Arts', thinking about technology in the context of architecture, sustainability and public spaces. Arts development and fundraising experts Diana Williams, Simon Fairclough from CBSO, and Charlotte Appleyard from Royal Academy of Arts appeared in our second episode ‘Sponsorship in a Pandemic', and talked about the need for a blended approach of live and digital. Johnamarie Macias from The Wookiee Gunner joins Tricia Barr, B.J. Priester, and Geek Kay for a wide-ranging discussion on storytelling in Star Wars. We continue our exploration of the individuals influencing the future of Star Wars storytelling with Diana Williams, a member of Lucasfilm’s Story Group. In October, Johna attended “A Conversation With Diana Williams” at the New York Film Festival, in which Williams talked about her upbringing, her path into the entertainment industry, and her perspective on transmedia storytelling and other technological changes altering the ways people can tell stories. At Lucasfilm, Williams is the Story Group’s lead on videogames, including the recently released Star Wars Battlefront, which offers a wide variety of gender and ethnicity combinations for players to use. She is vocal on Twitter about her criticisms of Hollywood for its problems with diversity, inclusion, and representation, and she no doubt speaks her mind within Lucasfilm’s creative team, as well. Thank you to Johna for sharing her report and reactions to Williams’ presentation. For our world-building segment, we discuss Claudia Gray’s novel Lost Stars, released in September as part of the Journey to The Force Awakens. Like the three regular hosts, Johna also is a big fan of the book. We praised Gray’s effectiveness at designing the two cultures on the planet Jelucan, the valley kindred and the second-wavers, to create the personality traits in the lead characters, Ciena Ree and Thane Kyrell, which ultimately motivate the choices they make as the Empire and Rebellion clash over the course of the story. The early season two episodes of Star Wars Rebels are featured in our storytelling segment. Johna is keeping spoiler-free for The Force Awakens, so Tricia, B.J., and Kay conclude the show with a Spoilers Beware segment examining the new information and clues revealed in the marketing for the movie since our last show. Next month The Force Awakens arrives! Look for a reaction show from Hyperspace Theories soon after opening weekend. Related Links J.J. Bliss Broyard grew up feeling there was something about her family that she didn’t know. As her father Anatole — a literary critic for The New York Times — lay dying, her mother revealed what her father wouldn’t — he was part black. “My father truly believed that there wasn’t any essential difference between blacks and whites and that the only person responsible for determining who he was supposed to be was himself,” Broyard wrote in One Drop: My Father’s Hidden Life — a Story of Race and Family Secrets. Following her family’s revelation, Broyard — who was raised as white— began to look into her father’s Creole history and genealogy and learn about the family she had never known. She will present the lecture “From Passing to the Post-Racial: Does Race Still Matter?” Annie Seaton ’90, who has accepted a position as assistant professor and dean of multicultural affairs at Bard College, will be on hand to provide a response and frame discussion around the question: Does race still matter? She has written on race mixing in 20th century culture and has organized courses and conferences around the intersection of race and new media, examining visual constructions of race, such as blackness and Jewishness, via literature, literary theory, psychoanalysis and film. Ten years after DNA tests proved that a male in the line of Thomas Jefferson fathered children by his slave — and on the eve of an election that might see the first black president — discussions of race are still evolving. “These private stories are changing the ways we view race in America,” said Diana Williams, history.
