In this expansive conversation with B-Real, Sen Dog, and Eric Bobo, the Futuristic Funk pioneers share stories from the sessions that launched their most celebrated albums, the streets they grew up on, and the legacy of hits like “Insane in the Brain.”   Because this is a Cypress Hill interview, you can also expect a lot of deep discussions on cannabis, and how the group turned their weed anthems into pieces of activist art.   If West Coast hip-hop from the ‘90s is your golden age, this interview is a must-listen.

Cypress Hill was revolutionary since they came out. For one they are the first to use English and Spanish on the record. They were also a very early adopter of legalizing marijuana before it was popular. Cypress Hill also was the first hip hop act with two albums in the Billboard 100 with their first two albums. Okay, that's enough tidbits to hold you over, now check out this episode and find out more about this iconic group. Thank you to these west coast staples, Senen 'Sen Dog' Reyes, Lawrence 'DJ Muggs' Muggerud, Louis 'B-Real' Freese, Eric Bobo and Ulpiano Sergio 'Mellow Man Ace' Reyes.

In this episode, Eric Bobo and I talk about Damien Chazelle's "Whiplash" about a college student's dedication of achieving success in his jazz program lead by a perfectionist of a band leader. He gives, blood, sweat, and tears and sometimes that's not enough. Perhaps your dignity? Bobo gives us insight of the road a musician can possibly go journy through and it's never an easy one. This film in particular sheds a lot on the subject of success, respect and dedication for your passion. I admired the film based on the subject and certain edited cuts mimics the intensity of jazz and the sequences the actors give. It's a war of one's self against the war. How will you take it?

This week on the podcast I am honored to have percussionist Eric Bobo on the podcast. Before he became known as a member of Cypress Hill, and before he performed with the Beastie Boys, we chat about how he took over as director of his late father’s Latin jazz band. Legendary percussionist Willie Bobo, who played alongside iconic artists like Tito Puente (with whom he received mentorship from) and Carlos Santana, might be best known for his contributions to the Latin Jazz genre, but he was also one of the most influential musicians to the early years of hip-hop. It's an all encompassing discussion that leads up to the new body of work 'Empires' with Stu Bangas, which is out now! Tuesday in DTLA we had to ask Eric Bobo, after yesterdays mistaken run in with the law, How it felt driving into work today. Bobo had more time to let it sink in and he is still very thankful nothing happen but he has had experiences before this one so he knew how to react. The Matte black hand cuff they used was a new sight for the team who saw that happen while Bobo tried to react to the instructions he was given asking "What did a do" calmly. The crew starts talking about the weird weather conditions that have been going on around and the severe cold that the LA area has been feeling. They consider leaving with no power and what things you should stock yourself up with as food or survival needs. They reminisces on hitting Bobo's car two times in the past and accidentally hitting other things with a car. Godfathers wants E-Zone to take a chop back for being a bit confident about chopping him off guard. Kiero volueentered but was shut down by GF and B-Real to protect his chest. The Rock is having a show about his life made and the crew discusses the how similar the cast looks to the actual family members and the rock. E-Zone asks the Godfather if he wrestled with The Rocks dad hilariously and the guys realized John Cena and Gf's Pimp drop finishing moves are actually the same. The guys plan on a new round of dominoes and The Hotbox game. The guys talk about if they would lick a toad for psychedelic purposes to which no one has but consider the possibilities.

As the Monday starts off and everyone hopefully did their Yobo work outs, the crew lets us know there was an exciting story coming from Bobo today, first off they figure out who made the song Hannah Montana , Juicy J or Migos? Eric Bobo Joins the shows and lets us know about his run in with the LAW! As Eric Bobo was driving into the studio he was pulled over by about 15 Police and CHP cars and shortly a police helicopter today. As the crew came out side to see their homie jammed up trying to tell officers he works here and they proceeded to search him and his vehicle to no explanation. Finally he informs us that his license plates had been swapped form a stolen car and they confused him for the suspect. A heart pumping event to start the monday! We are glad he is safe and that we can laugh at the matter but what an exciting play by play. As B-Real describes it , the cops were so hyped and pumped up when dealing with Bobo thinking they caught their guy but looked deflated when they found out it wasn't him. E-Zone and B-Real are convinced that the karma of Gary Coleman came back on him, and that actually the officer he dealt with last name was actually COLEMAN! All of which was captured on video by Eitan and Ray! Hopefully TMZ has a good laugh at this like we all were fortunate to have laughing along.Switching the vibe the guys start talking about haunted Hotels and the grittiness of DTLA. C-Minus catches us up on the new series and movies he watched on his relaxation time. They breakdown how many people have recommended Game of Thrones to him going into details with out too many spoilers of how the story plays out. E-Zone asks about getting Dragon Eggs hilariously but his PAPA lets him know they were just talking about in the show. They guys can't help but come back to Eric Bobo getting jammed up on camera again. Bobo starts another story of being a kid and getting in trouble in school. Ray Charles daughter went to school with Bobo apparently and he had a incident where playing tag caused her to hit him back after a hard tagging. The Substitute Teacher Mr. White Head, a black guy, once threw Bobo for acting out across the room for acting out while he once tried to put Bobo in time out. Bo bo calms down but does it a second time causing the teacher to throw him across the room hitting a desk. The sub was fired and Bobo's mom was not happy! Mr. Shaw, a NYC teacher who came out and taught in california at B-Real's school, once picked up a fellow student and shook the kid violently. B-Real makes it clear that he would go wild if that was done to one of his kids. Bobo also lets us know that his dad wasnt informed about that story so that it would happen like that. The Guys watch the Six 9 beef with Meek Mill

Dante would always give Harry snacks and treat him like a little kid because he believes his trainer was a jerk to him. The trainer asked him to stop feeding him redvines because he thought the chimp was going to turn on him. Before filming the chimp and Dante actually hung out and had a few play dates to build chemistry before filming but the trainer thought he was building an allience with Harry. WWE LEGEND The Godfather back in the house with us with Cypress hill fast hands man him self Eric Bobo. B-Real was very hyped to break down the weekends boxing and UFC fights. The AHHHH sound bite has even more history now a hilarious back and forth with the podcast and Godfather realizing that it's stuck with E-Zone for life now. The GodFather asks about the domino game that was playing this past friday on the podcast, questioning what was going on to a silent room to which skinny pablo said "its because they lost" a cutthroat game and competitive game none the less but lots of fun. B-Real brought up a good point that C-Minus had controversy not calling his points when he scored to which Godfather even seen ppl play where they call ppl points for themself if they don't claim their points when they score. Bobo and GF say its best for every game you play to break down the rules with who you are playing with before the game starts to make sure there isn't any miscommunications. There was a few palm plays caught on camera by Steftone who to C-Minus own admission was giving up some points unknowingly. The fight lived up to the hype in the guys eyes also with B-Real pointing out Mike was motivated for the humanitarian aspect of fighting again for charity and not for a champion belt. Everyone agreed the real moment of the night unfortunately was Nate Robinson getting knocked out by Jake Paul, famously hated YouTube who just plained out performed Nate. Snoop Dogg commentating the fight was a true master piece making it a more entertaining event and with Snoop performing the Dr. notes that him and Wiz both were able to perform on PPV while smoking weed. The Internet is undefeated non the less with the memes that followed destroying Nate Robinson really. Mike and legends like him remind us of the Big 3 League for basket ball players put on by Ice Cube. C-Minus asks The Don about his first time smoking weed and how it has changed from when he was younger. Bishop details how he would help out with work growing up and that weed be the brick kind off swag back then but a pound was fairly cheap. He smoked and went on a trip his first time that had him praying he would never smoke again if he survived it. The Bishop also talks about quarantine effecting lovers and teenagers in 2020 that is destroying relationships and making it tough times for younger people with the pressures of dating online. The young rappers are also not able to enjoy this success Don Juan goes into today because the game isn't set up to help them make good decisions. B-Real gives advice to the younger rappers to avoid being involved in street politics when you do end up becoming successful due to envy and jealousy from the streets that you made it. Bobo talks about a guy passed out at a festival while his friends piled a bunch of trash on him and then lit that pile on fire wildly. E-Zone and C-Minus discuss the differences in drugs at a festival and the dangers that come with those type of events. When festivals go into a 3 or 4 day weekend, the Dr. is confused on how people get so wasted that they can't even enjoy it. C-Minus and B-Real talks about other places and events that actually try to help treat the problems with heavy drug users, so they try to find that happy medium as Bobo describes. When it comes to alcohol, some heavy users can't stop drinking because their body would go into shock, the lesson is don't over due this you would be a slave to like addiction. Speaking of "chasing the dragon", the podcast remincese on Eric Bobo's infamous heroin story. When The Godfather asks why he did it, B-Real discovers that it happen while it was on a Cypress Hill tour, while he was away in his room being out of trouble as Bobo puts it. The full-nelson demonstration from The Godfather birthed the AHHHHHH ad-lib that the DGT podcast has grown to love. The Godfather breaks it down for us how he wants to help build E-Zone into a great wrestler aka the "Baby Face" but B-Real and C-Minus see him more as a "Heal". That wrestling demo is going to happen where GF puts it as he's going to get his redemption. We took it to the Insane Asylum for their opinion. The podcast and GF decide to turn this into a full PPV dubbed The Royal Humbolt, where it would take place in a field of weed. The Godfather has also decided to direct the whole show and characters but is bringing the HOEEEEEEEEES. Skinny Pablo fills The GodFather in on how he works over the older ladies then B-Real remembers a friend who had a porno magazine called "Gummy Bears" about older women who gave oral with their dentures. The Godfather plans on flying Skinny Pablo out to Vegas and get him an all expense trip with 3 60 year old hoes that a drop dead gorgeous for our resident Gilf lover. B-Real dubs it his jigalo training, a special day. The guys ask what the largest age difference in women they have been with physically when that was older then them and the table shares their own personal stories. Of course Eric Bobo with his story at 16 in his early latin band days, was getting hit on by older women in the nightclubs. He was playing that type of music that made him a target for those women that wanted that young man energy though he admitted that he didn't tap that ass as the GF put it, GF also asks if he regretted that to which Bobo admits he wasn't ready but he didn't want an old stalker following him around to soon. Phunky Friday on the Dr. Greenthumb Podcast, the team toasts some Mezcal and catch Steftone up on the shenanigans this week he missed on. E-Zone compares his dads "DrMargaritas" to some he has had out and about while B-Real asks them if they can handle spicy drinks and food. Eric Bobo, Cypress Hill percussionist, lets us know that you don't want to eat something thats going to have your "butthole talking" and he avoids anything lactose so he doesn't have "immediate churro". Dr. Greenthumb breaks down what "Jungle Juice" is at a house party in southern California and how it makes everyone belly up in the streets throwing up. The guys talk taking their drinking to their limits getting the spins, watery mouth and the moments you realize that you are about to throw up. Steftone back in the house reminds the podcast, that they have been practicing recreational smoking long before it was recreational. B-Real talks his first time hanging out legendary "Rainbow bar" in hollywood and the many famous faces he would come across. Since the first time they hung out and smoked, it became an 8 year tradition to go weekly and smoke at which was dubbed "Lil Amsterdam". On Fridays, B-Real and many friends would play dominoes and smoke the finest of OG's. The whole venue was very respectful but there was a common don't mess around when it came for the love the Rainbow bar, as Steftone describes, "everyone from all genres of music and lifestyles would join together at this spot." They would come together to protect that spot no matter what, the history of The Rainbow Bar on the sunset strip. The food is amazing there as well, as C-Minus recommends the Chinese chicken salad and Eric Bobo with his band member B-Real agreeing that the Pizza is amazing. C-Minus discusses a time he was coming out the famous venue, The Roxy, where he smelled some good weed and sure enough he came across B-Real and friends where he joined the guys. Only one time the Dr. recalls having to put down the weed because they were smoking multiple "blimp" sized joints and a cop asked friend Dr.K to put two of the three massive sized joints out and allowed them to keep one going. This was a time before recreational and having a doctors recommendation to be able to smoke weed let alone publicly. E-Zone remembers Cannabis events and seshes where everyone would get together to find the bestsellers in the game out there with the best products. Free dabs and edible samples were a favorite but thats where the guys practiced the roll your own and use your own rig rules before the cover situation was even going on. The Dr himself would pretend to have a little sickness to avoid letting anyone smoke out of his bong. Not the most sanitary practice that most likely wont return, some companies were using one device to give hundreds if not thousands of people a dab out the same rig. Steftone and E-Zone talk about how other people just destroy bathrooms at these events, where they couldn't even use some restrooms at public events. The Dr. recommends that you "flush out your system before you get to the club" and Bobo reminds the Insane Asylum that you have to take an express dump in those situations. Bobo has never had no toilet paper in his stall but he has missed a flight while on the toilet as he heard his flight last call and was unable to stop the "task" at hand. The table talks about whats going on in 2020 and how essential weed is at keeping people good during the tough times. Eric Bobo asks what it would have been like to have no weed during these times as well especially early into quarantine. The Dr. reminds us all that were able to keep cannabis businesses open as an essential business respectfully. There was a time where you couldn't quietly enjoy weed places as C-Minus brings up when he and the rest of the guys were younger, being hard to hide the smell as B-Real says too. The podcast concurs that no one feels apologetic for how loud their weed is for they are making the world better by sharing the plant. Bobo asks B-Real if there is a song he has written sober and the Dr. fills us in on that "Stoned is the way of the walk" ironically was the song he was inspired while sober riding the bus. Interesting fact, It's the only rhyme he wrote sober and memorized with out having to write on paper. The beat was found that same day by random which was meant for a different artist and was swooped up and turned into the classic song, long verse no chorus. B-Real and the group all worried about if they hotbox the room a little too much and Bobo mentions he thought Donnell dropped his dog, and the Dr. mentions how his dog gets vengeful when he doesn't get his way and poops in the wrong places. Bobo had his dog chipped for it wouldn't get lost but considered taking it back out because of the hassle and costs, E-zone goes on about chip tracking they had for kids. C-Minus recalls an episode of the show Black Mirror that details parental controls and B-Real breakdown how parents look at these kinda of options, letting us know it is "not the business" The guys catch up on the "fxck show" that is this election and give their takes on whats going on with the vote counting and the publics reactions. B-Real goes into details to what a bar count is for a DJ and how some DJs can't keep on beat, which Bobo can't vibe with. B-Real give out the homework assignment if you can count the bars of the verse properly to the Insane Asylum. Bobo also has found memories with B-Real having a few days that he was being jerk on tour where he was hard to be around as he tried to filter out bad people around him. With alot of animosity going on in the groups situation, they had record label and real life stress going on which they loved taking out in moshpits after sets. Bobo go back to a time where he was in Miami and his car got broken into and his camera was stolen, losing precious footage. Bobo also had the remorse the guys recall destroying dressing rooms for fun during their rockstar days including putting a sandwich in a VCR sticking out the tape slot. Sendog used to get lit on stage and go in on Eric Bobo equipment, with permission of course, but til he got that $9000 bill for percussion equipment. The fans loved that type of energy although but destroying your equipment can cost a lot, especially when Bobo lit his own equipment on fire. Once again, more hilarity continued as the doors to the Insane Asylum opened. The Dr goes over everything from moshpits at Lollapalooza from Sound Garden and the craziest one he has personally been in during a RAGE against the machine set he went from the stage to the pit. Cypress would cover "Jump Around" by legendary group and fellow homies House of Pain, where the crowd would crouch down and on the drop all know what to do and jump around like crazy. The DR. give anger management advice as well to the Insane Asylum, while C-Minus and E-Zone have fun telling them to cry and eat donuts. Everyone gives their take on their own catch phrases, to doing shows in stadiums with Jay-Z and KISS. Turns out Eric Bobo fell asleep on yesterdays podcast with Donnell do to eating too much food and smoking too much on the show, after Donnell had to wake him up during the podcast. be sure to watch the full episode and leave a comment below! thank you Insane Asylum! join on discord. The podcast...

The Dr. and the podcast bring up the Masked singer and break down which songs B-Real would cover if he participated. Yacht rock is a favorite genre round the table, E-Zone goes into his love for Michael McDonald and how he discovered his love for Patti Labell. The guys kick the show off fresh with the Dr.'s special margaritas for the crew, the guys talk about dogs and the relationships they have with them. E-Zone talks about coming across a dog communicator or medium in the park. QUICKLY Eric Bobo brings up another story from the past where he gave a cat a micro dot of LSD one time. Though it was intentional, the cat started licking his hand when he wasn't paying attention and had a tab there. Eric Bobo describes the cat tripping out and then B-Real recalled that the cat in particular he remembered as a tough alley cat. C-Minus and E-Zone both agree that they think that cats are assholes when it comes to personalities and destructing things. Cali Blaise recalls a time he was attacked by cat and it was caught on a ring camera outside that he had to throw and it ended up breaking multiple things. When it comes to flavors, Cali Blaise brought both flowers and concentrates though for the guys to check out and gave us more info on processes of concentration. Best farmers in the world are in California, so when you work with the best in the world they are definitely here. With a product that comes with a promise that Cali Blaise will make sure you are satisfied with their extracts or get you right. The CRC process done right, Cali Blaise filters waters and refines the process to deliver the best product possible to their supporters. E-Zone and Blaise both got into the Simpson's and their fandom for their real life predictions, E-Zone claiming it as "Cartoon Illuminati". All agreed that South Park was really dope because like the Simpsons, no one ever aged. Blaise brought up later that most people thought that Cypress Hill in NYC, where he is from, was the origins of the group. B-Real describes how New York really did claim and show the Cypress group love as if they were from there. E-Zone reminded his dad, The Dr. himself, that there are many new states that just passed legalization. Blaise touched on how long that process and development it takes to get those measures in order and active. Oregon actually passed legislation that legalized many drugs in this recent election. Donnell Rawlings makes his way to the podcast after a short little break. Immediately the energy gets taken up with Donnell always being the bright energy in a room. With his new "bitch who don't talk back in tow" he has a new dog Many along with him. E-Zone said Donnell was out here naked jokingly and "Ashy Larry" hit E-Zone with that hold up, you are a little too calm tone as the two joked around again. Donnell proclaimed he doesn't speak "Bark" so him and his new dog Magy get along great because she is so small she take little M&M poops. Having an emotional support dog card is like having a medical card E-Zone got into and Donnell lets us know there are some weed guys you can get both from. Donnell lets the podcast know he recommends getting a lap dog if you want to meet new women, lately he has seen success in his own experiences. Donnell tells a story where he gets an upgraded on a Delta flight and the lady next to him has a Saint Bernard next to him on a flight that was uncomfortably close to him, which made him feel like a "white karen" because he complained after his flight for having to sit next to massive dog. B-Real brings up the smackfest videos they have been watching and Donnell remembers when Hot 97 had Smackfest back in the early 2000's and how far the actually matches went, later becoming an international phenomenon. Donnell Rawlings brings up his first gigs at "Comedy Connection" in Greenbelt Maryland. Donnell would heckle comedians, and quickly tells E-Zone he has "heckle-face" as more comedic jarring went down. Donnell talks about being a heckler at a comedy club then being challenged to go on stage and bombing his first attempt. He started roasting the audience and thats how he discovered his career birthed from a natural vibe of being the guy in the room people enjoyed laughing with. The guys all agree how roasting or capping or snapping on each other was their first days of interacting with comedy at young ages, but Donnell having a special ability to destroy his competition. There are two ways it goes he says, either they want to fight or drink after. Our condolences to David Lucas getting destroyed by Donnell on Kill Tony Live at the Comedy Store. On a Thursday close to halloween, we are in for a special treat with skateboarding pioneer and legend TONY HAWK and Legendary Rapper Trick Trick on the podcast today! Of course we got frequent guest host Eric BoBo in the house today with DJ C-Minus and E-Zone with some doobies rolled up ready to go! Kicking off the show, we welcomed Tony and Trick Trick to the show thanks to the Insane Asylum and them waving Tony Hawk to the podcast. E-Zone brings up The Simpsons Episode and Tony's experience being character in an episode. B-Real also being on an episode brought up the time Cypress Hill was banned from SNL. Tony discusses his early years picking up skateboarding and how it turned into his career with his parents being very supportive early. He divulges his first experiences with music from hanging at the skate park with friends. Tony was the only friend with his own house very young at 17 and with no parental supervision, many friends would be over hanging where he first had experiences with weed. Being an true athlete though, he didn't let partying or smoking distract him from his work ethic so he didn't indulge very much. As the show starts getting deep, Tony was asked if he was getting a contact high and he talks about his first time smoking. Like many, he over did it a bit and continues on as B-Real asks about Tony's first edible experience. Our other special guests Trick Trick and Eric Bobo both share wild edible stories themselves. Another story of when B-Real got a little too much before going on stage and the cypress hill members throwing "flags on the play" during sets. As the joints kept burning, the Hawk man asks B-Real about weed legalization and if he felt validated for being a pioneer and forerunner for cannabis since the beginning. Of course the guys had to get into the legendary culture changing game "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" and Eric Bobo asks if Tony had "The Skills" on the game himself. Tony being a very busy person, didn't have much time to continue playing the game to this day but he said very early that Jamie Thomas, another pro skater from the first game, was injured and developed in the game so much he would give feedback to the developers themselves. Tony not being a gamer himself much did, like C-Minus asks, about growing up playing 80's arcade games. Tony, always purchasing the oldest to the newest console gaming systems, actually learned how to edit skate video from practicing on games first. Paranormal activity a frequent topic on the podcast, the old man story was broken down to Tony and might have just made an appearance. Strictly good vibes around the old man, he doesn't like tension or beef and B-Real stopping a hater previously. The Dr sent the wave to hit up his Mt. Kushmore compadres, Snoop dogg, Method Man and Redman. BoBo had a great story about water skiing and they discuss sports injuries. There is a possible collaboration in the future maybe with the Hawk man himself. The Insane Asylum had many questions and the show wrapped up with good vibes here in Downtown LA. Seth and Rob go backstage at Chastain Park Amphitheater where the hosts sat down with Andy Farag (percussion) and Joel Cummins (keyboards/vocals) of Umphrey’s McGee and discuss future Halloween’s and how sharing a five-bedroom Chicago apartment while recording their latest album ("it's not us." due out in January 2018) allowed the band to “live and breathe Umphrey’s music” while they recorded. We get a window into the creative process including how a piece of the song “Educated Guess” ended up on, “Similar Skin.” The musicians take us back to pre-Umphrey’s days, how they met, the significance of the band Stomper Bob and Andy’s Father. We learn about the near-demise of Umphrey’s when original drummer Mike Mirro informed the band he was leaving, and then about how the band was reenergized and refocused when drummer Kris Myers joined, and how Myers, in turn, influenced some of their arrangements. Joel discusses how key their attentive fan base is to the process of how certain sections of improv go from being “Repeated Stews” to becoming composed songs, and how he “found his way” in a guitar-heavy band, and “setlist probation.” Andy talks about how Giovanni Hidalgo and Eric Bobo inspired him and how he benefits from Jake’s percussive approach to guitar. Perhaps best of all we get window into the thought process behind “on the fly” setlist decisions and the story behind their collaboration with Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman and how explained his previous “some Umphrey’s McGee Bullshit” comment to the band. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. www.joshthaneproductions.com www.wonderdogsounds.com Inside Out w/ Turner and Seth: insideoutwtns.com Twitter: @InsideoutWTNS Instagram: www.instagram.com/insideoutwtns Facebook: www.facebook.com/insideoutwTnS See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
