In this episode of On Boards, Chris Cuddy, a seasoned executive and board leader with over 25 years of experience growing technology-enabled companies in both the private and public sectors shares invaluable insights into the evolution of a company's board as it progresses through different growth stages. He discusses how the board's role shifts over time from hands-on support to formal governance. His unique perspective is informed by his extensive career, including key roles in companies like Cheapflights, Engage, and ezCater, as well as his background in consulting, investment, and board leadership. Key Topics Discussed: Stages of Board Evolution in Startups Seed Stage: Founders are often the primary board members, with activities blurred between governance and management. Chris recalls the “early days” of ezCater, likening the stage to “two founders and a PowerPoint.” Startup Stage: Boards begin to focus on defining product-market fit and may introduce angel investors. Chris describes his hands-on involvement with ezCater at this stage, from customer calls to financial planning. Growth Stage: The board's role formalizes with the introduction of venture capital. The addition of independent board members and committees becomes essential in order to scale. Chris shares how ezCater's board evolved to support rapid expansion across the U.S. Maturity Stage: The board is now primarily focused on governance, with a clear distinction between board and management roles. Chris reflects on how the board transitions into “maintenance mode.” Renewal or Decline: Boards help strategize paths to either reinvigorate or prepare for acquisition. Chris recounts his experience with Engage, navigating challenges during the tech bubble burst. Key Traits of a Functional Board Selecting board members with domain expertise, cultural fit, and a shared commitment to supporting the company. Chris discusses the importance of a highly functional board in advancing a company's mission and creating stability. The Role of the Board Chair Chris highlights the importance of the board chair as a bridge between the founders and board members, ensuring transparent communication and balanced input. He shares insights on the unusual longevity of his role as ezCater's board chair, attributing it to his ability to adapt as the board and company evolved. Unique Challenges and Responsibilities in Early-Stage Boards Chris describes the blurred line between governance and management in the initial stages, emphasizing that board members may often act as extensions of the executive team, especially in strategic, operational, and fundraising efforts. Building the Board with Intentionality Chris emphasizes the importance of selecting investors who bring value beyond capital, often influencing the board's dynamic and direction. Chris and Raza discuss the need for careful vetting of potential investors and board members to maintain a cohesive and effective board culture. Memorable Quotes: Chris Cuddy on the role of the board in the growth stage: "The ambition and time frames often require venture capital, but this step requires serious reflection. ‘Will this change the DNA of the company?'” Board dynamics: “A functional board isn't just about expertise—it's about cultural fit and motivation to support the founders and company's best interests.” On the board chair's responsibilities: “The chair is a bridge between board members and founders, ensuring transparent communication and insuring that everyone's voice is heard.” Takeaways for Board Members and Founders: Understand the shifting role of the board at each company growth stage. Prioritize a balanced board composition that brings both expertise and alignment with the company's culture. In early stages, board members often play a quasi-executive role, actively participating in operational decisions. For sustainable growth, founders and the board must align on long-term vision, values, and expectations for governance.

Stefania Mallett, co-founder and former CEO of ezCater, shares her entrepreneurial journey and insights into effective board governance. She emphasizes the importance of board composition, highlighting the pivotal role of understanding marketplaces and the nuances of investor-backed boards. Stefania also discusses the crucial dynamic between CEOs and board chairs, the challenges in communicating complex business scenarios to board members and the critical process of succession planning. We love our listeners! Drop us a line or give us guest suggestions here. Big Ideas/Thoughts/Quotes: On Relationship Between Board and CEO/Management in Investment Backed Companies “.. it's kind of like grandparents. The board cares intensely, but in the end, they hand the baby back and you - the CEO and/or the managing team - you're the parents and you have to deal with all of the colicky moments and all of the ups and downs and all of the difficulties and so much more about what's going on inside the company.” “It doesn't matter how effective a communicator you are, having been on both sides, I can tell you that the most well-intentioned, most transparent, most forthcoming CEO cannot possibly convey to the board everything that the management team knows.” Origin Story of ezCater and Early Board “..we closed [a company I had help found] down on a Thursday. I went home and got drunk on the weekend and on Monday we started the business that turned into ezCater, which was helping make food appear for business meetings[!]” “Don't bring people onto your board who don't understand your business” Evolution of the Board through ezCater's Journey and role of a Board Chair “we started to get more professional board members who understood our business. We lucked into someone [Chris Cuddy] at Launchpad, who understood marketplace businesses, not specifically in the catering food for work business, but he came out of online travel [marketplace]. It turns out one marketplace is a lot more like another marketplace” “we lucked into someone who became our board chair and $425 million of venture capital funding from some of the biggest venture companies on the planet later, we are now thousands of times the size we were when we first met this Chris” I don't have a velvet hammer as much as I'm impatient. Impatience is the mother of invention, and so when I watch Chris Cuddy our board chair do his work I think, "Oh my God, that's just better." He's more patient. He listens. It doesn't really take longer. It feels like a circuitous path to the answer, but it's actually about the same length of time as I would have taken with less angst, less fireworks. The founder and CEO are not necessarily the best board chairs.” Transition of CEO for ezCater “the company was ready, and I was ready, and I went to the board meeting a few weeks later and I said, "Guys, I got to go. It's time.” “We launched a search and found my successor. Because of internal discussions, because of the board's hesitation, because whatever, we ended up taking a year. We had the time, I mean it wasn't like running, screaming for the exits, and I wasn't doing a terrible job. My team was doing a super job” “When this person started, now it's three months, four months, and it's quite clear, he has experience at the 10X level. He brings in knowledge, not just "I think we should try this,"” Joe: “You have touched upon series of things that apparently apply to investor-backed companies and startups that also apply to every for-profit company, whether private or public. The importance of the chair, the importance of learning to share power - every CEO has to learn it, every founder has to learn it. Every investor, whether it's a startup or not, has to learn it.” Effectiveness as a Board Member and Over-boarding “One of the very best board members I have had in my entire career in all the companies that I've been on or on all boards I've chaired or that I've been on the board is a guy who, when I did his reference checks for him people raved about him and when I would ask, so what's wrong with the guy? Almost every one of them said ‘he's on too many boards.' ” “It's important to remember that the board gives you a couple of things that you can't get anywhere else. One is the cadence of every X weeks or X months, you have to report to these people…. There's something about that regular cadence of having to report, that is very valuable.” The second thing you get from them is perspective. If they are good board members, they bring you a portfolio perspective. You live your life as a portfolio. You can only do one company at a time. Even more industrious and somehow energetic entrepreneurs than I do are involved in two startups at a time, but it's rare. But these people who are on your board are involved in 10 startups right now, or 10 companies at your stage right now and have seen many others, and so they can say to you, "Listen, I saw people try exactly what you tried and here's what happened to them," and you can save a bunch of time.”

Welcome to She+ Geeks Out, the podcast bringing you the voices of women+ from all walks of life to share with you what they geek out about-- their passions, talents, struggles, and successes. In each episode, hosts Rachel Murray and Felicia Jadczak will feature different guests and discussions about topics including health, psychology, art, music, learning, and more. Episodes are fun, engaging, and provide some nuggets of information that you can take away. Oh, and yeah, they might be awkward sometimes. That's just how we roll. This season of She+ Geeks Out is unlike any other so far. Together, we will be unpacking what the future of work looks like for different groups of people in terms of diversity, equity and inclusion. In addition to our special guests, listeners will also get to hear snippets from our facilitation team on what DEI really looks like in the workplace from a practical, actionable standpoint. When organizations are building out their initiatives around DE&I, the biggest mistake is when companies view it as a check the box approach. DEI work is deep, lifelong work which is most impactful when it is built into every aspect of an organization as early as possible. This week, we'll take notes from leaders who have successfully brought intentional and fully integrated DEI programs into their organizations. We begin by talking to CA Webb, Former President of Kendall Square Association, about how she worked with She+ Geeks Out to build the organizations' new DEI program which ended up becoming Diversity Drives Inclusion. They began with a learning journey, out of which came the realization that there was a huge need for a different approach to DEI education in companies. She also shares her observation that while many people now claim to be anti-racist, they don't actually know how to put it in practice. Next, we hear from Fatima Dainkeh, SGO staff DEI programs and training manager, about doing the work. When facilitating workshops, Fatima always repeatedly reminds participants that the work is not the workshop. While having a workshop can be great for organizations to plant the seed of DEI, it is important that the workshop is part of a bigger plan to pursue DEI goals. Afterwards, Jason Fook, Senior Director of Learning and Development at Essex Property & Trust, talks about taking a DEI leadership committee to the next level. He shares that Essex had actually been thinking about launching their own DEI committee before the pandemic. Now, they are at the point of questioning how they can make the initiative even bigger and take it to the next level. Though Jason was nervous that nobody would come, their classes have actually begun to sell out.To further discuss the role of formal training and workshops is Dr. Erika Powell, a DEI and Leadership Consultant and Coach. When facilitating a class or an experience, she says that each one is a flight because participants go higher and wider in their consciousness. She also shares about her shifting views of unconscious bias in the workplace. We also hear from Amaia Arruabarrena, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at ezCater, about the need for organizations to define what DEI means to them. It is important to hold each of the 3 pillars of DEI to the same importance to be successful at making people feel welcome and included. After defining what DEI meant to them, the team then worked out a dedicated budget for the efforts. Every organization will face their own unique challenges based on size, age, location, budget, and resources. Elisa Campos-Prato, Sr. Recruiter at Scott's Cheap Flights, elaborates on approaching efforts creatively. She also touches on the fact that money is not a necessity, but rather a pathway for DEI. Anna Whitlock, Director of People, Strategy, and Culture at LabCentral, shares about the company's various DEI initiatives. Biotech is not traditionally a space where most people of color feel welcomed to, but LabCentral is doing everything they can to change that. Elba Lizardi, site director at BASF, shares how she initially got involved in the DEI space via a DEI task force. Prior to being nominated, Elba isn't sure she was really being loud enough about DEI issues. Before reaching out to customers and suppliers, the organization funded an employee research group. Then, Naomi Seddon talks about a few of the initiatives at Megaport where she sits on the board. Their focus was to hear about diverse employee experiences and figure out a way to be accommodating for everybody. You can't get to where you want to get quickly, "without looking at the data". That sentiment was expressed by my guest, Colleen Manning, VP of Sales at Clora, during the discussion we had about the importance of using data, sharing (and receiving) feedback, and communicating effectively as a leader. Careful scrutiny of data is paramount, especially in the early days, like when she scaled her former employer, ezCater, from less than 10 sales reps to over 120 reps in just a few years. Over Quota is sponsored by the j. David Group, a software sales recruiting firm. If you're looking to hire a sales leader or individual contributor, click here. to schedule a call. On the other hand, if you're an overachieving sales leader or sales rep, click here to discuss potential opportunities that would be a good fit for you.

How to rapidly scale and still maintain the highest customer service standards - Interview with Ed Ariel, VP of Customer Service at ezCater, the only US-wide marketplace for corporate catering.
Marketing combines creativity and statistical analysis to reach a company's audience. Without measurement of how marketing programs perform, a marketer is unable to see their impact. Casey Cheshire's marketing mentor, a Marketing Leader & Strategist, and the CMO of ezCater, David Meiselman, discusses the importance of measurement in marketing and provides strategy and examples of different ways to measure marketing programs. Career advice from a marketing mentor, how to dig into your audience and speak their language, this episode is filled with all the takeaways you would expect from number 100. Check it out! Takeaways: Causal impact analysis takes the prediction of how a program is going to perform against how it actually does, and uses the difference to measure the success of a marketing program. “...the whole point of mass media is that you end up reaching enough of the right people that you get it to be economically effective.”-David Meiselman Some customers are more valuable than others. What is the long-term value divided by the customer acquisition cost? Be sure to also market to the core of what people need. For example, a one-time transaction versus the root of the problem that will drive customer retention. One of the never changing aspects that makes effective marketing, is telling a story in a way that is compelling and resonates emotionally with an audience, while solving a need they have. Get to know your audience by understanding digital behavior on your website, email and ad testing results, and also through conversations. Have conversations with your current customers and potential buyers. Listen to the language they are using to describe their problem. How else do you understand the audience without listening? David's advice for marketers in their early career is to do some selling. Understand where your audience is consuming content. Is it podcasts, blogs, webinars, etc? Multi-touch attribution is a good way to measure marketing programs in terms of receiving an understanding of the impact trends. What programs perform well at different parts of the customer journey? It is not best practice to associate specific dollar amounts from money spent on particular campaigns to the revenue generated. As you grow in your marketing career, take the opportunity to understand statistical analysis, develop your ability for copywriting, and your skills in all areas of marketing. Find a rocket ship of a company and just get on. You will experience and observe great growth and change. Marketers can get a baseline of performance and then overtime have a predictive model of how certain areas will perform. Then how the program actually performs versus the prediction, is the difference of how well or not well the program is doing. The delta between the prediction and the actual performance is the measurement.
Every single company on earth wants to have a healthy work-life balance. More and more millennials these days are listing a healthy work-life balance as one of the driving forces behind the reason they choose to work for a company. So how does your company embrace a healthy balance? How do you ensure that the work is getting done while still maintaining a culture of openness and respect? While treating people like adults? On this episode of The Sales Engagement Podcast, we sat down with Colleen Manning, Director of sales at ezCater, to talk about: What it takes to implement a healthy work/life culture How leadership can model a work/life balance from the top down Why “hustle” can only get you so far
We know that brands need data to succeed in the catering industry. So we partnered with Technomic to compile data for you to use to grow your catering business. That required looking at millions of ezCater catering transactions, surveying restaurant leaders across the country, and distilling that data into a report on the opportunities in the catering industry. In this podcast episode, Tina McDonough, Partner Marketing Manager at ezCater, discusses the insights from our catering report. Tina dives deep into data, such as the investments brands are making, the common denominators among restaurants with growing catering sales, and much, much more. Tina also explains how you can use these insights to capture more sales and invest in the right resources to grow your catering business. Episode Takeaways: - While many people are more familiar with B2C catering, such as for weddings, 61 percent of the restaurants we surveyed say that their catering sales are coming from the B2B catering market. - Ninety percent of restaurant leaders say that catering is strategically important to growing their catering business. - Restaurants with growing catering sales are investing in people, technology, and marketing. - According to our research, restaurants with online ordering have higher conversion rates than restaurants without. OpenCity’s CEO, Nick Belsito “Breaks Bread” with ezCater’s CMO, David Meiselman, as they discuss ezCater’s incredible growth over the past 11 years, achieving “Unicorn” status, and what it takes to help their restaurant partners grow.
In the United States alone, catering has grown into a $60 billion market—making demand generation essential to every restaurant and industry operator's marketing strategy. Of that $60 billion, $24 billion is concentrated in business catering. And some brands are feeling the pressure to broaden their digital and marketing efforts to keep consumers coming to their door.On this episode of The Barron Report, host Paul Barron chats with David Meiselman. Meiselman is the chief marketing officer for ezCater, the world's largest online marketplace for business catering. The company works with over 62,000 restaurant and catering partner locations throughout the United States.According to Meiselman, studies show “that 70 percent of catering buyers want delivery with their order, but only about 44 percent of catering orders are delivered.” With ezCater, he adds, “about 97 percent of the orders that come through our marketplace are delivered.”For ezCater, the mission is simple: partner with dependable, high-quality catering partners to help connect restaurants and operators with their current customers while also building that base. The company utilizes three online platforms—ezOrdering, ezManage, and ezDispatch—to accomplish this goal. Business class catering and delivery is provided via a network of local couriers and companies. Membership is free and there is no cost to be part of the marketplace itself; ezCater simply takes a small percentage of each order from the restaurant.Listen to The Barron Report episode above to learn more about what makes the catering business unique and how the movement toward online ordering may help restaurants and operators focus on doing what they do best: making great food.

A couple of people--including David Cooperstein, an early guest on the pod--said I had to talk with David M. And I'm glad I did. He really distills MarTech to its essence. It was a great chat. Hope you enjoy it too.
Stefania Mallett, CEO at ezCater, who raised multiple seed rounds, and then, over a period of a decade, $70 million. Stefania describes her journey of building a 2-sided marketplace for catering services that will do a billion dollars in billing soon. Great story of a woman entrepreneur who focuses on data, metrics, and results, not bias!
Stefania Mallet (@StefaniaMallett) is the CEO and co-founder of ezCater. She has spent over 25 years building and growing technology-enabled companies that solve real business problems. Stefania co-founded and successfully sold InSite Marketing Technology (now NASDAQ: KANA). Her tenure at National Logistics Management (a broker for $225M in transportation services) brought NLM to profitability for the first time in 4 years. At IntraNet (now NASDAQ:TSAI), Stefania revamped the firm and vaulted it to #1 in its market, a position it has maintained for 15+ years. Stefania also operates as a Director and advisor to many for-profit and non-profit firms. She has a BS and an MS from MIT. The Cheat Sheet: Why you should be asking yourself is my company’s solution or product a “painkiller” or a “vitamin”?- When do you bootstrap versus take outside capital? What are the three main reasons people become entrepreneurs and why does that matter? What does your last company’s success or failure mean to for your next venture? What matters more the people or ideas or both? What are the three core values in ezCater’s culture that propels the business? How do you become “fearless” and learn to take a leap of faith when you are scared? How do your emotions play into your leadership ability? And so much more…
If you’ve ever had to cater a meeting, you know the panic that comes along with it. The type of panic that sits deep in the pit of your stomach. Will the food be late? Will it be the same as you ordered? Or even worse, will it show up at all? Stefania Mallett heard these concerns first hand. Thousands of these concerns, in fact. All from customers at her previous company. And when that company went under? She knew exactly what problem to solve with her next company -- EzCater.
My guest this week is ezCater Co-Founder and CEO Stefania Mallett. Stefania has spent over 25 years building and growing technology-enabled companies that solve real business problems. She co-founded and successfully sold InSite Marketing Technology to what is now KANA on NASDAQ, and prior to that led National Logistics Management (a broker for $225M in transportation services) to profitability for the first time in 4 years. As the COO of IntraNet (now ACI Worldwide,) Stefania revamped the firm and vaulted it to #1 in its market, a position it has maintained for 15+ years. What I find remarkable about Stefania is not only the depth of her competence but the breadth of her interests. A self-proclaimed “systems thinker” and engineer, she emerged from a difficult and non-traditional childhood determined to make sense of the world, proceeding through a hugely successful and entrepreneurial career to do exactly that through a series of executive management roles across a dizzying array of industries and company types. Far from the overly-intellectual engineer stereotype, though, she’s managed to remain a warm and insightful person who clearly cares deeply for the people she’s working with the build ezCater, a neat little company which itself has a story worth telling. We’ll spend our second segment doing just that, walking step by step through the unexpected yet highly typical twists and turns that characterized ezCater’s beginning, through the disciplined approach to management that’s created one of Boston’s most successful and thriving marketplace businesses.
