Farm Safety Week - James Chapman: "When you are in those dark moments, it can be an extremely lonely place"

On the podcast this week Farmers Guardian reporter Chris Brayford is joined by Farm Safety Foundation's chair of trustees James Chapman for a special insight into farm safety. It is a very important week for the industry which marks Farm Safety Week, an annual initiative which places a spotlight on farming's poor safety record, as well as the need to keep everyone safe on farms. The Health and Safety Executive released data on Monday (July 22) from the last year which found 35 people had died in farm-related incidents, which included the deaths of two children, in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. We often hear of the deeply moving accounts from those who have survived incidents on farm, as well as the tragic cases of those killed during incidents, and the way it has impacted families and friends. For those who survived, like James, it has changed their outlook of farming and has ignited a flame to help others in keeping safe so that what happened to them can be avoided in the future. If you don't know James, or Jim, he is a farmer from Warwickshire who has been a passionate advocate for farm safety ever since losing his left arm in a PTO shaft machine back in January 2005. We recorded the interview during the Farm Safety Foundation's tenth anniversary for a two-part special where we discussed health and safety on farm, his own experiences of being involved in an on-farm incident which changed his life completely, the importance of Yellow Wellies' work, and what the industry can do to tackle its poor safety record. Message us

Welcome back as we end the week with some farm safety.Agriculture ranks among the most hazardous jobs in the world. Farmers are at very high risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries; and farming is one of the few industries in which family members (who often share the work and live on the premises) are also at risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries.Did you know about 84 kids die each year in accidents on farms, according to a new study, and 26,570 are injured badly. That is why it is so important to us not only as Farmers, but as Mothers to educate those on our operations, our kids and to all of you! You can never have enough education on safety in our eyes.

The biggest contributors to farm accidents are probably impatience and complacency.  Getting in a hurry, or thinking that danger doesn't exist just because nothing has ever happened before can lead one into a dangerous situation. On today's show we are profiling the farm safety education philosophy of the Tunstall FFA Chapter in Dry Fork, Virginia.  Dr. Jessica Jones, the FFA Advisor and her colleagues have figured out that impatience and complacency can be overcome by keeping safety in the front of one's mind.  If you think safety first, then your chances of not overlooking a dangerous aspect of your job go way up. Two of Jessica's students, Chapter President - Cole Abercrombie as well as sophomore member - Zac Chaney join me on the show today.  They will talk about farming in their area, what they see as some of the biggest risks and how farm safety is taught in every agriculture class at Tunstall, regardless of whether or not it is Farm Safety Week.

Nobody wants to get the phone call that there was a farm accident. We assume the worst. And rightly so as farming is one of the most dangerous occupations. That's why we're celebrating Farm Safety Week ahead of a busy harvest season. No matter the severity of a farm accident, financial stress also becomes a factor. Angela Bunker is a loss control specialist with American Family Insurance. She is the eyes and ears for underwriters. She says farm accidents can grow up to 10 times higher than the initial cost of the accident through "soft costs." She also walks us through the easy safety measures anyone can take to prevent an expensive accident.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The 2021 data for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that the agricultural sector is still the most dangerous in America with 453 fatalities. Fall harvest time can be one of the busiest and most dangerous seasons of the year for the agriculture industry. The mission of Farm Rescue is to help family farms and ranches bridge crises so they have an opportunity to continue viable operations. Farm Rescue provides planting, haying, harvesting, commodity hauling and livestock feeding assistance to farm and ranch families that have experienced a major injury, illness or natural disaster. We have assisted more than 1,000 farm and ranch families since our inception in 2005! We see that one of the biggest financial drains on a family is an unexpected medical injury or illness and, of course, a natural disaster. It is even more pronounced on a farm where a family's livelihood depends on the ability to plant, harvest or provide for their herd. Farm Rescue gives families a chance to continue their livelihood by providing the necessary equipment and manpower (free of charge) to get the job done. American Ag Network chatted with Dan Erdmann of Farm Rescue to discuss how farm rescue can help out you or someone you know in a time of need.

In February last year Fred was changing a tractor tyre when the jack failed and his arm was trapped and crushed for a considerable amount of time. Surgery took 8 ½ hours to insert a metal plate and 32 screws to his arm. Severe nerve damage left him without any feeling in his hand. In our May Broadcast, we are delighted to have on Stephanie Berkeley from the great Yellow Wellies initiative, part of the UK Farm Safety Foundation. About the Farm Safety Foundation: Rising concern over the continuing high level of fatal and life-changing injury accidents on farms prompted leading rural insurer NFU Mutual to set up a charitable foundation in 2014 to help farmers work safely (Registered Charity No. 1159000). The Foundation works closely with partners in the industry to engage, educate and communicate strong and relatable farm safety messages. Over the past eight years, the FSF has developed and delivered farm safety training for 16,000 young farmers in 44 land-based colleges and universities throughout the UK and through the Young Farmers' Club network. Through national campaigns such as Farm Safety Week and Mind Your Head, the Farm Safety Foundation is preserving and protecting the physical and mental wellbeing of the next generation of farmers and equipping them with smart strategies and specific skills to live well and farm well. Hailing from Donegal in Ireland, Stephanie's friends were either farmers or fishermen; equally dangerous industries. After studying European Business Studies and spending time living and studying in Asturias and Barcelona, Stephanie began a career in journalism at Belfast's Newsletter, working in the business section of the newspaper before joining publishing house Greer Publications with Ulster Business magazine. After various roles in the Greer Publications group with Specify magazine and Ulster Business, Stephanie was appointed Editor of the award-winning Northern Woman magazine as well as editing the lifestyle section of Ulster Business. From 2006-2014 she was Marketing & PR Manager for W5, Ireland's only science centre and a charity with educational aims before her move, in 2014, to Stratford-upon-Avon where she has developed and grown the Farm Safety Foundation, its education programme and award-winning campaigns. Stephanie is a qualified Mental Health First Aider, author of The Little Book of Minding Your Head, a member of ISASH (International Society of Agricultural Safety & Health) and represents the UK on Safety Culture and Risk Management in Agriculture (SACURIMA) – Cost Action CA16123.

It's Farm Safety Week and on this week's Dairy Edge podcast, Francis Bligh joins Emma-Louise Coffey to discuss the potential risks on Irish dairy farms during the summer months. Francis points to autumn herds calving outdoors, 2nd cut silage, agitating and spreading slurry and children on the farm as some of the activities that present risk as well as day to day farming activities. Francis recommends that farmers and farm staff take the opportunity to all aspects of the farm to consider potential risks to themselves and the wider public to make your farm a safer workplace. He emphasises the importance for dairy farmers in taking ownership of their health and well-being by getting the basics of food, sleep and exercise and he encourages all farmers to go to the GP where there is any health concern and that all farmers should be scheduling some time off from the farm following a busy 6 months on farm to avoid burnout. The overarching theme of this year's Farm Safety Week, taking place 20 to 24 July, is ‘take safety seriously'. With a different topic each day, Farm Safety Foundation manager, Stephanie Berkeley, explains the aim of the campaign is to spread awareness of poor safety records on UK farms and to help reduce the number of farming related accidents. Stephen Jacob, BASIS CEO, leads on to describe how training in agronomy that predominately took place in a classroom or in the field prior to COVID-19 has successfully moved into the digital realm. And finally, Paul Rooke, executive director at the British Coffee Association explains how the food, drink and hospitality supply chain has experienced a ‘squeezed middle' since the sector came to a halt at the start of lockdown and what action has been taken to lobby the UK government and influence policy.
