Who was Anne Perry? She was a prolific author known for writing historical detective fiction, a career that began in 1979. But she harbored a dark secret in the early part of her career, namely that she was involved in murdering a friend's mother when she was only 15 years old in one of the most famous murder cases in all of New Zealand's history. -- Episode Written by Mike Bedard Episode Editing by Lewis Poggie -- Join our Discord server! https://bit.ly/deepcutsdiscord -- Pick up some Deep Cuts T-Shirts and other merch! https://bit.ly/deepcutsmerch -- Get the official Deep Cuts shoulder patch! http://bit.ly/deepcuts_patch -- Listen to our album, a 9 song rock opera about the rise and fall of Napster! https://open.spotify.com/album/63C5uu1tkzZ2FhfsrSSf5s?si=q4WItoNmRUeM159TxKLWew

On the afternoon of June 22, 1954, Agnes Ritchie was preparing ice cream for two customers in her shop when two teenage girls, Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme, burst through the front door, screaming for help and saying one of their mothers had been killed. Agnes and her husband followed the girls into the nearby wooded area, where they found the badly beaten and obviously dead body of Honorah Parker. The couple wasn't able to get much out of either girl, only that the woman had slipped and hit her head, but their behavior was strange and something about the whole scene didn't feel right.Just two days later, Parker and Hulme were charged with the murder of Pauline's mother, Honorah Parker. According to the prosecution, the girls had developed an intense bond and had created romantic fantasy in the months leading up to the murder that bordered on obsessiveness. In 1954, the girls' relationship became threatened when Hulme's parents divorced and began talking of relocating. Fearing they would be separated and never see one another again, Parker and Hulme killed Honorah, believing that her death would put an end to any plans to relocate. The story of Honorah's murder and the trial that followed quickly spread across New Zealand and Australia and eventually made its way around the globe. Among other things, the case challenged existing beliefs about young women and their capacity for violence, but just as important were the sensational and salacious mentions of insanity and homosexuality that were often more implied than explicitly stated.Thank you to David White, of the Bring Me the Axe Podcast, for research :)ReferencesBrisbane Telegraph. 1954. We're back after the summer break, and are joined by Anne Perry, the publishing director at Jo Fletcher Books, to talk about Naomi Novik's 2015 fantasy bestseller, Uprooted. Based upon aspects of rural Polish folklore, Uprooted follows Agnieszka, a plain village girl who is shocked to learn that she is to be taken away to live with The Dragon, a powerful and distant wizard who lives in a tower at the edge of the valley, and protects them from a malevolent and expanding forest. Anne, Peat and Dan discuss the feminine voice and perspectives the book offers, from friendship to romance, and why this was unusual when it was initially sold in 2014. We talk about the malevolent Wood, its echoing of Mythago Wood, and how it spawned an era of new, female oriented fantasy. We also discuss the various aspects of the male characters, and how outward hostility can hide redemptive transformation, when the female enters into their domain in the correct way.The Judge offers a brilliant talk on a topic very relevant to writers of all stripes, namely the issue of copyright of characters, showing cases as diverse as Sherlock Holmes, Only Fools And Horses, Discworld, and Spawn.Lastly, Captain Halfmilkcarton insists that Lt Bungalow clean up his mess, without much success.Join us next time when we'll continue our talk with Anne Perry, talking about the state of publishing in 2023, how this affects authors, booksellers, bookshops, and the pros and cons and indie and self-publishing.IndexAnne Perry Interview [0:00:00 - 55:37]Skit (55:45 - 58:37]The Judge's Corner [58:38 - 1:14:36]Credits and close [1:14:37 - 1:15:12]

In "Dorchester Terrace: A Charlotte and Thomas Pitt Novel," the late author Anne Perry writes the next novel in a series in which Thomas Pitt is now the head of Britain's Special Branch, and follows the story of him and his wife trying to get information from two women in order to prevent an international catastrophe. This conversation took place on a 2012 episode of "Conversations On The Coast with Jim Foster" originating in San Francisco, California. Photo: anneperry.us
You may know this case as the Heavenly Creatures murder.... The world we inhabit is an ever changing place, one lifetime can contain many lives if we're lucky. This is the story of two women: rural riding instructor Hilary Nathan and internationally famous novelist, Anne Perry, who once lived as two completely different people. Anne grew up as a rich and fragile heiress named Juliette Hulme, and Hilary was a hard working, dark and quiet girl called Pauline Parker. Apart these two are people you may not give a second thought about, you could pass them in a supermarket or on the train, but together they are the subject of the lurid and shocking Peter Jackson Film, Heavenly Creatures. On the 22nd of June 1954, in the village of Christchurch New Zealand, Pauline and Juliet, as they were, did a terrible terrible thing. A thing so awful that even after their prison sentences were over, they were never allowed to see each other again. This week we go through Pauline's diary entries to see what she had planned, and what in her mind, lead to this horrific act of violence Learn More: This website has every single available piece of info on this case that is currently available, it is vast. This link takes you directly to the section with a detailed transcription of Pauline's diaries. So! After a few technical hitches and delays our bumper new episode is finally up. The Big Peat and I are joined by the award-winning fantasy author RJ Barker, whose novel The Bone Ships won the British Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 2020. Together we rabbit on about Richard Adams's 1978 classic piece of children's fantasy literature, Watership Down.Watership Down follows a group of rabbits who, led by the reluctant but resourceful leader Hazel, leave the safety of their warren after Hazel's younger brother Fiver, has a Cassandra-like premonition of a catastrophe befalling their home. So, joined by the doughty enforcer Bigwig, who loves nothing more than a scrap, the storyteller Dandelion, the quick-witted Blackberry, and a ragtag bunch of others, they embark on an odyssey to find a new home. A few square miles of west Oxfordshire countryside becomes the canvas for an epic tale of adventure in which the rabbits encounter danger, despair, tragedy, unexpected friendships, tyranny, war, and peace. With RJ we talk about the strange worldbuilding of the book, including rabbit language and mythology, the English countryside setting, and the various forms of social order presented by the different warrens found in the book. Elsewhere we talk about RJ's forthcoming book Gods of The Wyrdwood, his heavy metal roots, and his route into publishing. Along the way we discuss chimps, muppets, Goth make up, and how the film Excalibur saved RJ's life in Leeds. The Judge gives us a follow-up to her talk on trial by combat with another, broader talk about early criminal trials, including trials by ordeal, and how this may be used in our writing and worldbuilding, and we hear the winning 75-word entry from April by emrosenagel.Lastly, our roving reporters from Mars FM give us an interview with a chap who claims to have visited Venus and seen the most incredible creatures, who bear an uncanny similarity to something else encountered in this episode. Enjoy!Next monthIn July we'll be joined by Anne Perry, Director of Publishing at Quercus Books, a subsidiary of Hodder & Stoughton. Oftentimes, authors pull from real-life experiences to fuel their work. When it comes to mysteries filled with insane plot twists and a culprit that was easily identified from the very start, sometimes authors tend to take liberties. But, sometimes they don't. Today, we're going to talk about crime author Anne Perry and the murder she committed years before she rose to stardom. Full source notes Morbid Curiosity

Hello hello! On today's show: the celebrity festival of celebrity festivals, Coachella, is here, and there are two questions on everyone's minds: are Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello back on, and what the hell happened to Frank Ocean's headline set? Then! Meghan Markle won't be at King Charles's coronation, Lili Reinhart is trolling her ex Cole Sprouse, and sorry, Zara smells a rat with Matthew McConaughey's new press tour. This week, Zara recommended this obituary for crime writer Anne Perry, as well as the memoir ‘This Is Not a Pity' by Abi Morgan. Anne Perry, formerly known as Juliet Hulme - who served jail time along with Pauline Parker for the notorious murder of Parker's mother in Christchurch's Port Hills - has died, aged 84. Perry was 15 and Parker 16 when they lured Parker's mother to Victoria Park where they murdered her with a brick to prevent their separation. Hulme subsequently changed her name to Anne Perry, before moving to the UK where she forged a career as the prolific writer of best-selling crime novels. New Zealand writer Joanne Drayton wrote a biography on Perry. She spoke to Corin Dann.

Today, Lori is interviewing Courtney Maum. They'll be talking about honesty in memoir and her book The Year of the Horses.
