Drinking water is at risk of becoming scarce in the face of climate change. More than 50% of the nation has experienced drought since 2000. Rich “Raz” Razgaitis, CEO of Bluewater North America, a water purification company, joins the conversation to discuss the rising incidence in the water of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances, or PFAS, the forever chemicals used in everything from the lining of fast food containers and firefighting foams to cosmetics and waterproof clothing. A recent United States Geological Survey study found that as much as 45% of U.S. tap water is contaminated with PFAS. Rich last joined us in early 2022, before the company he co-founded, FloWater, was acquired by Bluewater.Water filtering, use, and reuse will become a more prominent feature of daily life in the coming years. The USGS study, however, is a wake-up call about chemical contamination. It found at least one type of PFAS in almost half of 716 samples taken from taps around the nation from public and private water sources. The Eastern seaboard and Midwest have the most contaminated water systems. And several cities in the West with heavy industry and military bases also have PFAS-contaminated water. The availability of safe, fresh drinking water will become a more pressing issue as the climate crisis progresses. Our guest today, Rich Razgaitis, started FloWater, a maker of water refill stations that can purify local water, allowing people to refill bottles safely and quickly. The company also sells reverse-osmosis purified water in recyclable, reusable aluminum bottles and a faucet filter attachment the remove many of the impurities that can still be found in U.S. drinking water. We discuss the role of publicly accessible water refill stations in providing access to water, and the reduction of soda and other canned and bottled beverages and water when water is easily available in offices and schools. We also look forward to consider how efficient, hyper-local water filtration services can potentially allow reuse of greywater -- post-use water generated by an office building or university -- to reuse water on-site. Los Angeles is currently providing some water that has been processed from local sewage -- these technologies can be miniaturized and distributed to help water impoverished communities build a sustainable local water supply.Drought will reduce supplies and extreme heat will increase demand for water. Across the planet today, 785 million people do not have reliable access to drinking water and as many as 884 million are without safe drinking water, according to the World Health Organization and UNICEF. We've made progress, bringing water and sanitation services to an additional 1.4 billion people since the turn of the century. But there is a long, long way to go to providing safe drinking water for all of the people on planet while leaving enough freshwater for the rest of nature.Learn more about FloWater at https://www.drinkflowater.com/.

Raise your hand if you bought a wellness/functional juice shot in the last 18 months. We're guessing more than a few hands went up, and it's not surprising. Demand for the products, often formulated with immunity-boosting ingredients such as turmeric, ginger and elderberry, surged during the pandemic. As a result, the category, which was once composed of a handful of brands sold at natural grocers, has attracted a growing number of upstart and established companies to the space. Mainstream retailers have also taken note and many have incorporated juice shots into their cooler sets. Despite booming demand and an increasingly competitive landscape, pioneering wellness shot brand Vive Organic has remained consistent in its focus, according to co-founder JR Simich. Adherence to the brand's core values, which include a commitment to high quality ingredients and consumer-driven innovation, helped drive Vive to prominence in the natural channel and, later, to nationwide distribution at mainstream retailers including Safeway, Target, CVS and Walmart.  In an interview featured in this episode, Simich spoke about how Vive has kept its focus and why it has been so important to the brand's development. He also discussed his role among the company's three founders, why staying on message helped land a long-term partnership with Whole Foods, the impact of its creative and efficient trade show strategy and why aligning with founders of like-minded brands has benefited Vive's ability to land new distribution and retail placement. Show notes: 0:39: Interview: J.R. Simich, Co-Founder, Vive Organic — Simich spoke with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif about how he and his co-founders assessed the opportunity for a wellness shot brand, how Vive enhanced its test-and-learn sales strategy and why passion played a key factor in the company's initial placement at Whole Foods. He also explained how a trade show strategy built on the brand's recovery benefits helped win over key figures in the industry, how the company's product line has evolved and how Vive attempts to educate consumers about esoteric ingredients. Later, he explained how sharing notes with other natural brand founders provided important insights about mainstream retailers, his level of concern that strategic companies like Coca-Cola and Pepsico are divesting from refrigerated brands and his perspective on growing competition in the wellness shot category.  Brands in this episode: Vive Organic, FloWater

Sustainability Now - exploring technologies and paradigms to shape a world that works

Raz Razgaitis is on a mission to eliminate single-use packaging and put bottled water out of business by making tap water safe and tasty again. Co-founder and CEO of FloWater, Raz sees the bottled water industry as our contemporary "Big Tobacco," capitalizing on a manufactured need while wreaking untold public health consequences due to plastic pollution. FloWater's technology is currently keeping 5.5 plastic Water bottles every second from reaching our landfills and oceans and this is just the beginning. Using the newest filter technology in their touchless hygienic water Refill Stations, FloWater creates public access to drinking water that tastes and hydrates better than anything in a single-use plastic bottle and is free of pathogens, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and micro-plastics. We talk about business, the challenges of taking on Goliath, changing prevailing perceptions and following one's heartfelt sense of mission.

Let’s face it: even though we all know there’s a huge problem with single-use plastic bottles, right or wrong, most Americans just don’t trust tap water. Tens of thousands of plastic water bottles are thrown out every minute, with nearly none of them actually being recycled. In fact, thousands of years from now, our plastic waste may be some of the most obvious relics remaining of our civilization.  But one serial entrepreneur, Rich “Raz” Razgaitis, is trying to make plastic-free tap water cool again, and wants you to think of single-use plastic water bottles as if they were as socially unacceptable as cigarettes. And so far he’s raised $25 million in venture capital to wage his purified tap water crusade. Raz co-founded FloWater with the goal of placing his water purification machines in thousands of public places, making clean tap water available for free to anyone passing by. FloWater machines are already displacing water bottles in major offices like Red Bull, Microsoft, Airbnb, Google and Target, as well as more than 100 hotels and dozens of school districts and concert venues in all 50 states. Hear Raz’s inspiring story in this episode, as the FloWater team continues seeking to transform our perceptions of tap water and put an end to single-use plastic water bottles. In this episode, we talk to Rich Razgaitis (Co-Founder & CEO of FloWater) as we discuss how he started his company, what he looks for when turning around a company, and his passion to drastically reduce plastic water bottles.  **More On Rich** Rich “Raz” Razgaitis is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of FloWater, where he leads the Denver-based company in its vision to create a new distributed and decentralized water platform. The company is on a mission to disrupt the drinking water industry by delivering the best-tasting water in the world and eliminate single-use plastic water bottles and packaging waste. FloWater has become the beverage of choice for such companies as Google, Red Bull, prAna, Oneill, Play Station, Specialized Bikes, Alaska Airlines and Xponential Fitness, as well as the Oakland school system. Since the company launched in 2013, its proprietary, new-tech water Refill Stations have saved more than 130 million plastic bottles from the environment and is on track to save over one billion plastic single-use bottles by 2022. Razgaitis originated the concept and product development of FloWater and has scaled the brand significantly since its initial distribution in only one state: Today, FloWater Refill Stations are used daily at over 5,000 hotels, schools, corporations, gyms, retailers and events in nearly 50 states. Razgaitis' role is focused around financial and business strategy, investor relations, team hiring and organizational development, product development, and strategic growth partnerships, while overseeing operational execution—from manufacturing to customer service. He recently secured $15mm in Series B growth funding for FloWater. In 2019, FloWater was recognized as a “Top 500” company on the annual INC 5000 list of fastest-growing growing privately-held companies in America. In his career, Razgaitis has been passionate about building brands and teams. Since 2002, he has served in CEO/president-level roles in several venture capital-backed start-ups, privately held turnaround, and growth companies, and he brings insight from those experiences to his work today at FloWater. Razgaitis was the CEO of several consumer-tech companies, including DealOn, an e-commerce company that developed the Web's first deal-commerce exchange, and another, MyTownPerks, which built the first PCI-complaint, the cloud-based loyalty program for B2B. (Both companies were subsequently acquired.) Razgaitis has deep experience in the consumer-goods industry, having led personal-care and nutrition company Univera into fast growth, with revenues doubling from $35 million to $100 million per year. With a specialty in rebuilding brands, Razgaitis also restarted a privately held consumer company, Blaine Pharmaceuticals, where he led product development and licensing of a dozen new products and drove commercialization into over 30,000 food and drug stores nationwide. He started his career in Fortune 500 companies, including Johnson & Johnson and Eli Lily. Razgaitis grew up in the Midwest and holds a BA in marketing and an MBA in general business and marketing from Anderson University. When not working, you can find Razgaitis spending time with his two teenage daughters, where he gets to refine his ‘dad jokes,' or studying his Enneagram, volunteering with Defy Ventures, which focuses on ending mass incarceration and recidivism or riding a motorcycle in the summer and snowboard in the winter.   Follow Rich on LinkedIn Visit our website TheStartupLifePodcast.com Follow The Startup Life Podcast Facebook Page Want gear from The Startup Life? Check out our gear! We set the scene during out interview together: plastic waste is understood to contribute to species extinction, ecological devastation, climate change, and human health problems. But despite holding the dubious distinction of being the world's biggest plastic polluter, Coca Cola and other industry giants are actively sabotaging efforts to curb plastic waste. Raz gives his powerful answers to these questions: 1. Raz, how would you say your experience has been fighting (and winning) the good fight against industry interests bent on protecting their profits at all costs? 2. Businesses are big, hard to change, how do they build a new mission or lead a new juxtaposing industry? 3.
