We also explore the differences between habits and one-off decisions driven by willpower, the process of habit formation through repetition and rewards, and the concept of ideomotor action introduced by William James. Stephen Dubner is the New York Times best-selling author and host of the podcast Freakanomics. I met Stephen when he and his Freakanomics crew came to Esalen for an on-site interview that centered around deceased Nobel Prize winner and occasional Esalen lecturer Richard Feynman. Feynman assisted in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II; later in his career, he investigated the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. During the 1980s, in Big Sur, three women who had experience with underground psychedelic therapy, Debby Harlow, Barbara Berg, and Cheryl Haley, initiated Feynman through the psychedelic experience. Now, the Freakanomics team was interested in interviewing these three women, at Esalen, where they had initially met Feynman. We gathered together in the famed Fritz room at the southern most tip of the Esalen property, and I got to see Stephen do his work. He seemed fascinated with Feynman, not just as an intellect, but as a human being. And in many ways, as a person, Feynman exemplified the human potential project - he pursued expansion and fulfillment, right up to the very end of his life. I am thankful for Feynman, if only because it linked me to Stephen Dubner, one of my favorite writers, thinkers and interviewers alive today. In our conversation, we delve into the life of Feynman, but save a little time to talk AI, job loss, storytelling, the future of work, and the critical role of community. In this episode, I play some short clips from one of the recent Freakonmics episodes: "Mr Feynman Takes a Trip —But Doesn't Fall." I also play a few brief segments from one of Feynman's talks at Esalen Institute in 1984, which he called Tiny Machines. Enjoy Freakanomics: https://freakonomics.com/series/freakonomics-radio/
A topic that I used to be very into and had since faded for me but listening to an episode of Freakanomics brought it back to the front of my mind. Do the shoes you wear really matter? The episode talked about the evolution of shoes and what it means to your feet and some of the long-term health of your feet and body in general. In this Clinical Insight we get back into the discussion and offer some practical points to take away that you can apply to finding the “right” shoe for you. We also discuss time and place and that it doesn't have to be one way or the other. Enjoy. If you read the book, "Freakanomics" they discuss how a lot of things we experience in the world have a hidden side to them. There are many things where we think we're doing good, but actually we're not doing good. For example, take recycling, how often is it that the trash can with different slots, but slots for trash and recycling go into the same bin? Or if you don't clean out your yogurt cup and still recycle it, this causes damage to the recycling machines. So follow the rabbit hole and see if you're truly being a good person. If you love nature and you're constantly worrying about the environment but you travel all around the world, every week in a private plane. Are you doing everything you need to do to live within your principles. To see how the sausage is made can be a rude awakening and that might change the way you think but you have to ask yourself, do you want to live a lie and feel important, or do you want to do important things and actually make a difference in the world. Journal Prompts How do you know you're truly doing good with your actions? Are you taking any shortcuts in your actions like not cleaning out the yogurt cups? How can you improve in this area?

One of the first books that Chris Huie fell in love with was "...a story about a rogue economist" called Freakanomics. In it was a beautiful framework for how to approach problems and that mentality would lay the foundation for Chris's future. He would go on to study finance and end up having decently fast-paced career in business and finance. However, the zero-sum mentality that had served him well in the business world didn't feel natural. Open-source is the mental counter-point to zero-sum. Ever wondered why some leaders are always in your social news feed, while others are invisible? For every Richard Branson, there are hundreds without a voice, which is a huge missed opportunity - particularly when you consider leaders are outperforming brands when it comes to social media impact. Look in your Linkedin news feed. My guess is you follow more people than you do brand pages. Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode one hundred and NINETY of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Ten away from two hundred… I’m sure you could have done the math on that yourselves. Still, that’s huge! And as we approach the big numbers, what better time to approach some big topics with none other than author and historian RUTGER BREGMAN!An absolutely massive episode covering - as said - some big topics and issues, which are immensely interesting and made a lot easier to understand with Rutger’s able guidance and explanation. His book ‘Utopia For Realists And How We Can Get There’ is available now (published by Bloomsbury), and this should be a good idea of what you can expect - Rutger tackles the issues of universal basic income, strikes, borders, how great art can be achieved by not having basic financial worries, how we need a return to utopian thinking, new ideas beginning at the fringes of society, how the US isn’t the beating heart of the entire world (as the news may have you believe), the ‘circle of bullshit’, and how we are working with “21st Century hardware on 19th Century software” - all of these are expounded on a great deal so this is a good one to really sit and take some time with. There is a kind of ‘Freakanomics’ approach to some of the points, which is fascinating - like the eventual financial cost of one element of one’s life, and the knock-on effects of doing one thing in particular and how it leads to what’s down the road. Just so much to enjoy, and all very positive too - certainly not a world of doom and gloom in this one, no way. In honour of the traditional 1900s English Christmas carol, or for those born in the 80s - the Bob and Doug Christmas classic, we thought we would do our own 12 Days of Christmas. Listen to the full episode to catch Young PR Pros' 12 Days of PR Christmas. We divided the 12 days into three categories: books, movies and activities. 1. Four Books You Need to Read Over the Holidays Day 1: Get the motivation to pursue your passion by reading No Fears, No Excuses by Larry Smith (note: forgive Kristine for her mistake, she says No Fears, No Regrets in the episode). Day 2: How will you measure your life by Clayton M. Christensen will give you the inspiration and wisdom you need to achieve a fulfilling life. Day 3: Meg Jay argues that 30 is NOT the new 20 in her book The Defining Decade: Why Your Twenties Matter - and How to Make the Most of Them Now. Day 4: Brush up on your grammar through the delightful sense of humour of Lynne Truss in her book Eats, Shoots and Leaves. 2. Four Movies You Need to Watch Over the Holidays Day 5: Ex-machina will keep you on the edge of your seat in this future world where AI is taken to the next level. Day 6: Kristine suggests watching a classic movie that has been referred to in a lot of pop culture references, Good Will Hunting. Day 7: You can't go wrong with superheros and PR. Hancock follows Jason Bateman who discusses the fine art of grassroots outreach, reputation management, and even a CSR campaign. Day 8: Iron Lady takes you through the life of the infamous Margaret Thatcher. The movie gives you a glimpse of the behind the scenes of political PR. If you have time, check out these honorouble mentions: The Queen and The Devil Wears Prada. 3.
