He has a wealth of knowledge and a great perspective on how to develop a player led culture and accountability system. SHORT TIME SHOTS It's time for Short Time Shots, a quick look at the day in college wrestling. Montevallo recorded its first dual win in school history, beating Allen 32-15. The Falcons won seven out of ten bouts, which including two major decisions and three pins. They did lose to Newberry 31-14. Freshman Carson Freeman and Gabe Hixenbaugh (yes, that one) both went 2-0 for the night, with Freeman earning a pin and a decision, and Hixenbaugh securing a pin and a technical fall. Congrats to coach Daniel Ownbey and his fledgling flock of Falcons. Keeping it in Division II, King University edged Belmont Abbey 23-22 on criteria on Wednesday, with the key to the Tornado victory coming at 141 pounds where King's Ashtan Hendricks was in a back-and-forth match with two-time All-American John Carayiannis before pulling out the fall in the second period to upset the nation's second-ranked wrestler. The fall was key as both teams recorded a pair of falls and King came away with the win via the third criteria, most match points, which they had a 35-34 advantage. Frostburg State and coach Josh Hutchens is 3-0 in that program's revived status. The Bobcats upended Fairmont State 21-20 on Wednesday. It was heavyweight heroics as Gavin Bage pinned Fairmont's Ethan Babay midway through the first period to seal the come-from-behind victory. Moments earlier, it appeared as if Fairmont State would come away with a win as Dwayne “Not The Rock” Johnson earned a fall at 197 pounds. Bage decided that was a false finish and got the actually dual-winning fall 96 seconds later. So far this year, Frostburg State has beaten Wheeling and Garrett College and now Fairmont to improve to 3-0. Other scores of note in Division II saw East Stroudsburg beat D3 Scranton 42-8, Coker beat Lincoln Memorial 24-17, UNC Pembroke shut out Emory & Henry 58-0 and Mount Olive edged Emmanuel 20-19. In Division III, second-ranked Wartburg shut out Simpson (the one in Iowa) 53-0, while Central beat Nebraska Wesleyan 34-6 in an American Rivers Conference dual. Elizabethtown notched an impressive 39-7 win over Division II Shippensburg. In the NAIA, Providence (the one in Montana) bested rival Montana State-Northern 27-10 in Havre (pronounced Hav-er). Leading 13-10 after seven matches, the Argonauts pulled away, sweeping the last three bouts with wins at 184 pounds by Alan Badley, and All-Americans Sawyer Hobbs and K.C. Buday. Hobbs pinned 11th-ranked Carl Hansen at 3:44. Elsewhere, Rochester, the one in Michigan, beat Henry Ford, the school, not the actual man, 42-9. In Junior College action, Western Wyoming turned informer, shutting out Snow 46-0. Iowa Western swept men's and women's duals with Ellsworth. The Reiver men won 31-20, while the women prevailed 28-20. Carl Albert State took out Division II Ouachita Baptist 26-20. On the women's side, Emmanuel got the better of Mount Olive 39-11, while Delaware Valley beat Frostburg State 35-15. The WV School of Osteopathic Medicine establishes a program at Fairmont State. And learn about famous art that was inspired by the Mothman legend…on today's daily304. #1 – From METRO NEWS – Bridge Valley Community and Technical College in South Charleston is making some positive strides for a few new efforts to increase and retain enrollment, as well as transform the overall student experience. The dual enrollment program the college has launched this year allows high school students to take a Bridge Valley course while still in high school if there is a teacher at that high school who has a certification allowing them to be an adjunct to Bridge Valley. Bridge Valley President Casey Sacks said there are a total of 34 high school students taking advantage of the dual enrollment in some form or another and from various districts.  Sacks said they have been doing work on process mapping around the recruitment and admission teams, as well as a reorganization of student affairs.  “I think a lot of this work has been what has driven some of our enrollment increase, because it has led us to a better job of communicating with people who are interested in the college, so it's something that we all recognize that we're going to continue doing moving forward,” Sacks said. The programs are designed to provide a firm foundation for students interested in osteopathic medicine, including the skills and credentials needed to gain admission and ultimately success in osteopathic medicine school, according to WVSOM President James Nemitz. “These are pipeline programs to educate students about what osteopathic medicine is and to provide them with a pathway to help them be successful at achieving acceptance at medical school,” Nemitz said. The WVSOM campus is located in Lewisburg and was founded as the Greenbrier College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1972. Through the Statewide Campus, WVSOM maintains locations throughout the state used by students in the final two years to complete clinical rotations. Mothman is best known for its presence at the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant in 1967, right before the bridge collapsed, killing 46 people.  The legend was widely unknown and forgotten even by the residents of Point Pleasant until John Keel, a prominent journalist and UFOlogist, immortalized the tale in “The Mothman Prophecies” book in 1975. One of the best-known visual art pieces associated with Mothman, the painting “Mothman” by comic book artist Frank Frazetta, was created around 1980.  And of course, one of the most recognizable and famous Mothman-inspired artworks is the Bob Roach Mothman Statue in Point Pleasant. The stainless steel figure was created in 2003 and has become a main attraction for the town and a must-see during the Mothman Festival every year. Maurice “Mo” Williams is the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Salisbury University in Maryland. He was named the ninth head coach in Sea Gull history on April 17, 2019.Williams became the head coach at Salisbury after one season as an assistant at Division I Longwood University, where he was spotlighted as a “Next Generation” coach by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Anthony Williams is the Head Coach of the baseball program at Frostburg State University, a Division II school in Frostburg, Maryland. He played collegiately at Slippery Rock University, a Division II program out of Pennsylvania. He began his coaching career in 2009 as a graduate assistant at Frostburg State. While there from 2009-2010 he was also a recruiting coordinator, hitting and infield coach. Then, in 2011 he spent one season as an assistant coach for the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Next, from 2012-2016 he was the Head Coach at Pittsburgh Greensburg, a Division III program. While there, he was also a part of the Pittsburg Pirates Video Advanced Scouting Department. From 2017-2019 he was the Head Coach at Clarion University, a Division II program based in Pennsylvania. Then, in 2020 he was hired on at Frostburg State as the Head Coach, where he still remains. In this episode, we start off talking about what it was like for Anthony as he stepped into his first Head Coaching position at such a young age, focusing on the challenges that he faced throughout that time. We than dive into Coach Williams thoughts on assistant coaches and how he goes about assigning them responsibilities in his program. We also discuss networking and the different ways to go about that, Coach Williams believes camps are still the best way to get yourself out there and meet other coaches. Next, we talk about building relationships with your players and fellow coaches and the importance of that as a baseball coach. Tim Miller is the Head Coach of the baseball team at Davis & Elkins College. His career as a baseball coach extends through Division II and III, and also high school baseball. His experience as a pitching coach has been tremendous, especially at Frostburg State when his pitching staff led the nation in strikeouts per nine innings. There are six huge games between ranked teams (or ranked teams and unbeaten teams) this week, and this is a week Pat will be on the road, as he is heading out to Los Angeles to see a pair of games involving evenly matched teams at each end of the SCIAC. Big games abound: No. 7 Hardin-Simmons at No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor; No. 5 Frostburg State at No. 6 Wesley; No. 10 UW-Oshkosh at No. 8 UW-Whitewater; No. 9 St. John’s at Bethel; No. 20 RPI at No. 23 Ithaca; and No. 19 Case Western Reserve at No. 12 Washington & Jefferson. We'll preview each of those. Plus, our guest this Friday is Marietta coach Andy Waddle. His team is one of the surprising 4-0 teams through five weeks, and he talks about what goes into the decision to go for a two-point conversion at the end of the game, even when it bucks the conventional wisdom. He talks about where his current running back, Tanner Clark, stacks up with some of his program greats, and we put him on the spot about the purple power that Marietta faces at the end of each season.  Pat and Keith also give us a quick overview of a half-dozen more games, and then they put each other on the spot. Cherita Hogan has always had a desire for education and training. During her 15 years as a secondary educator she has served as a special education teacher, honors RELA teacher, department chairperson, curriculum writer, program coordinator, Mentor Teacher, and professional development and corporate trainer for a Maryland school system. Ms. Hogan enjoys working with youth on all levels, and began working with nonprofit organizations in various roles including Director, President, and Chief Information Officer. Cherita Hogan attended Frostburg State University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Minor in Sociology. She also earned a Dual Masters Degree from Frostburg State in Special Education and Health Education. Ms. Hogan earned her third Masters of Science in Educational Administration from Trinity University (Washington, DC).

Dr. Kristine Peal holds the position of supervisor for Career and Technology Education for Frederick County Public Schools. In that role she provides oversite for the 32 Career and Technology Education (CTE) programs at the Career and Technology Center as well as agriculture, business education, computer science, engineering, family and consumer science, technology education  and work based learning at all of the middle and high schools. For the past two years’ she has had also led the Maryland Youth Apprenticeship "Earn and Learn" pilot program for Frederick County Public Schools. Kristine is a graduate of Walkersville High School and Towson State. She holds a Master’s of Business Administration from Frostburg State, a Master’s equivalency in Administrative Leadership from Hood College and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Frostburg State.   This spring Kristine was sworn in as a Governor appointed member of the Governing Board of the Maryland Education Development and Collaborative.  She recently served on the Career and Technology Education Sub-Committee for the Maryland Commission on Innovation and Excellence in Education (commonly referred to as the Kirwan Commission). Kristine is a member of the Governor’s Workforce Development Task Force for Advanced Manufacturing and Trades and is past President of the Maryland Career and Technology Administrators. Career & Technology Education (CTE) programs of study are available at all high schools and the Career & Technology Center. They offer students the opportunity to prepare for college and/or career and through academic skill development and practical work experiences. A CTE completer consists of four courses within a specific career pathway. Typically a CTE completer earns industry certifications and/or college credit. After a hard day of wrestling, we’ll have to take a big drink of Lakini’s Juice and call it a day. Ohio State won the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational without Joey McKenna and Kyle Snyder. That doesn’t bode well for the rest of the country. This is Short Time Shots with a look back at the wrestling happenings from December 2, 2017. I’ll be your heropsychodreamer and Hall of Fame writer, broadcaster and announcer Jason Bryant. Them Buckeyes earned three titles to outdistance that state down south, aka Michigan, 155.5 to 140. Arizona State was third with 113.5, followed by Northern Iowa, Nebraska and Virginia Tech. Leading the way for the Buckeyes were champions Luke Pletcher at 133, Myles Martin at 184 and Kollin Moore at 197. We’ll dial it back though and go weight-by-weight as freshman Taylor LaMont became the first wrestler from Utah Valley to win the CKLV by beating Sean Russell of Edinboro 4-3 at 125 pounds. LaMont, a member of the Junior World Team in Greco, was the No. 8 seed and after Friday’s win over Ethan Lizak, beat two more All-Americans to cap off a breakthrough event. At 133, Pletcher got past Stevan Micic in the semis before handling American’s Josh Terao 9-2 in the finals. A lot of buzz came out of the tournament from Drexel’s Austin DeSanto, who finished fourth, losing to Virginia’s Jack Mueller twice. The big the true freshman hype, at least for now, should go with a guy who won the tournament, and that’s 141-pound champion Yianni Diakomihalis of Cornell. The New York native knocked off past NCAA finalist Bryce Meredith in the semifinals before topping Northern Iowa’s Josh Alber for the second time this year. Expect a giant jump in the rankings from Yianni D. this week. Not sure if there’s a more underappreciated All-American than Justin Oliver. The Central Michigan junior wrestled exceedingly well en route to the title and a 9-7 win over upstart Troy Heilmann of North Cackalacky. That’s southern for Carolina. Michigan’s Alec Pantaelo got off the proverbial schneid with a resounding 10-3 win over Micah Jordan in the finals at 157 pounds. Jordan had avenged an earlier loss to Josh Shields, while Pantaleo was solid in his semi win over Nebraska’s Tyler Berger. David Freaking McFadden is nasty good. The Virginia Tech All-American packed upstart freshman Evan Wick in 2:58 to claim the Hokies only individual title in Vegas. Wick reached the finals as the No. 9 seed. Arizona State’s Zahid Valencia notched his second win of the year over Ohio State’s Bo Jordan. This time, the Sun Devil sophomore took home a 9-6 win after a 9-6 win in the semis over the rugged Taylor Lujan of Northern Iowa. Tis Valencia’s second straight championship at the event. Myles Martin scored three takedowns and only gave up escapes and a penalty point in an 8-5 victory over Michigan’s Domenic Abonader in a match that wasn’t as close as the score indicated. Kollin Moore shook off Friday’s bugaboos and regained the crushing promise he’s shown the past two years by hitting a slick fireman’s carry on Virginia Tech’s Jared Haught and then switched off to a head and arm and registered the first-period fall to win the gold at 197 pounds. Adam Coon of Michigan would top Arizona State’s Tanner Hall as Coon quickly countered a bad Hall shot in sudden victory. Coon wants to fly rockets and stuff. He’s big. Other tournament action that didn’t involve that big tournament in Las Vegas was mostly outside of Division I. Mt. San Antonio College won the Southern Regional championship of the California Community College Athletic Association. The Mounties, yes, the MOUNTIES, only had two champions but 10 of the 12 wrestlers placed in the Top 4. No report from the North Region up at Lassen College in Susanville. The Mid-South Conference had its women’s conference championships on Saturday with Campbellsville picking up four individual titles, not counting Kayla Miracle, who was in Russia at the World Cup. The Mid-South Conference has five of its members fielding women’s wrestling programs. Charlotte Fowler, Koral Sugiyama, Alexia Foca, and Kaitlyn Hill claimed gold. Lightning crashes in York, Pennsylvania as Johnson & Wales won four individual titles to win the New Standard Invitational at York College. Bobby Jordan, Jay Albis, Michael Gargano and Michael DiNardo each claimed titles for Lonnie Morris’ Wildcats, again, they aren’t just a cooking school. I alone challenge you to find the reference here. Messiah outdistanced Mount Union to win the Messiah Petrofes Invitational. The Falcons earned three individual championships. Mount Union scored 70 points in its NCAA Division III quarterfinal football win over Frostburg State over the weekend. Oh, we’re talking wrestling. Little alphabet soup as WPI won the RIT Invitational with two champions -- Tyler Marsh and Brendan Marion. “Lois, there’s a message in my alpha bits, it’s saying ooooooo.” Peter, those are Cherrios. By the way, that reference I was mentioning earlier? The band Live is from York, Pennsylvania, so there’s the I Alone and the Lightning Crashes references. 90’s music fans rejoice. Speaking of outside of Division I, you can file this under stuff that just never happens. Both Wartburg and Augsburg lost on Saturday. At the same event. To Division III schools. Not sure when, or if, that’s ever happened, but it’s a big enough anomaly that it leads off our dual meet section of the show. This craziness happened in La Crosse at the Candlewood Suites duals. Loras, coached by Watrburg alum T.J. Miller, beat Augsburg 17-16 as the Duhawks. Yes, Duhawks, won the last three bouts to rally from a 16-8 deficit. Heavyweight Quin Gillam earned the dual-deciding 5-0 win. Since many of you may not be super familiar with Division III or life outside of D1 wrestling, Loras is in Dubuque, Iowa and they were ranked eighth in the country coming in. Augsburg was second. Loras SID Jim Naprstek even sent me a DM asking if the #1 and #2 teams in D3 ever lost on the same day. No. 12 UW-Whitewater used a 4-2 decision at 197 pounds by All-American Jordan Newman over Kyle Fank to clinch a 21-20 win over No. 1 Wartburg. Both teams were docked a team point in the dual, with Whitewater’s coming after the match had concluded. Crucial swing was at 133 pounds where Hazen Rice was trailing Wartburg’s Brennen Doebel 6-3 in the second before Rice reversed Doebel to his back to get the fall at 3:38. Want to make things even more complicated? Augsburg beat UW-Whitewater 26-16. This should be a real interesting year in D3, especially after the semester break and a few more athletes come into play. Fourth-ranked Missouri opened up #MACtion with a 36-3 win over visiting Old Dominion. Grant Leeth picked up a fall at 149 pounds while Daniel Lewis picked up a technical fall at 174 to power the Tigers. Playing the name game, ODU’s Michael McGee, without an H, beat Missouri’s Barlow McGhee, with an H, in the tiebreakers. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it makes you wonder how days could be any worse. Sixth-ranked NC State didn’t drop a goose egg on Chattanooga, they sent them into negative integers. The Pack beat the Mocs 41 to -1. Team point got deducted after 184 pounds when Pete Renda edged Bryce Carr. The Pack improved to 8-0 already this season. Northwestern showed some snarl as the much-improved Wildcats handled Maryland 34-12. If you remember last week, Maryland had upended then-No. 21 Stanford. The Cats got falls from Sebastian Rivera at 125, Ryan Deakin at 149 and Johnny Wrestling, aka Johnny Sebastian at 174. The top individual matchup went Maryland’s way as heavyweight Youssif Hemida pinned Conan Jennings. Fire up Dips? Franklin & Marshall topped VMI 25-12. The Diplomats are the only Division III school with a Division I wrestling program. They are the Highlander. There can be only one. Because the Highlander was a documentary and it was based on events that happened in real time! Ok, enough Aqua Teen references. One bright spot for VMI is Hunter Starner picked up a fall at 133 pounds. Starner’s from Tabb, my high school rival, but he was part of my old wrestling club, the PWA. Indiana went 3-0 at the Hoosier duals, beating Northern Illinois, Cleveland State and SIU Edwardsville. In Division II, fifth-ranked Pitt-Johnstown fell behind early, but came back to win six of the last eight bouts to defeat 10th-ranked Ashland 25-12. Pat Pecora, the AD and head coach at UPJ, started his head coaching career -- get this -- DURING the Carter Administration. See, it’s not just a joke I throw around about Colton McCrystal. San Francisco State head coach Jason Welch earned his first head coaching win of his career as the Gators beat NAIA Southern Oregon 32-13. San Francisco State trailed 13-10 after five matches, but three of the next five wins were bonus victories, including falls by Sam Alnassiri at 285 and Isaiah Alva at 149. Mercyhurst scored wins by Penn State transfer Wes Phipps at 197 and Jacob Robb at heavyweight to get past Kerry Regner’s Millersville Marauders 22-16 in a matchup of PSAC schools. Mercyhurst also beat LIU Post 25-19. Gannon also went 2-0 with wins over Millersvile an LIU Post. Gannon, like the bad guy in Metroid? Ah, nostalgia. I wasn’t any good at that game. In the NAIA, top-ranked Grand View shut out Benedictine 51-0. The Vikings picked up falls from Blake Joiner at 174 and national champion heavyweight Dean Broghammer. We talked about the rarity of the negative one earlier -- coincidentally -- negative one was my softball number. Seriously. Southeastern University of Lakeland, Florida won six out of 10 matches on Saturday against the University of the Cumberlands. But the Patriots’ four wins were all by bonus wins, two majors and two falls and those four wins were enough to beat Southeastern 20-19. Quandre Chisolm’s major decision at heavyweight pushed coach Chris Fleeger’s team to the win. Yes, THAT Chris Fleeger. Lime green buddah still unaccounted for. His duties include the development, implementation and monitoring of all strength and conditioning aspects of the Beavers’ football program. Simon arrived in Corvallis after two years as the head strength and conditioning coach at the University of Wisconsin. He helped the Badgers to New Year’s Day appearances in the Capital One Bowl and Outback Bowl. Prior to working in Madison, Simon was the director of strength and conditioning at Utah State University from August 2009-January 2013. The Aggies appeared in two Famous Idaho Potato Bowl games – USU hadn’t played in a bowl game since 1997 prior to his arrival. From January 2006-July 2009, Simon was the associate director of strength and conditioning at the University of Utah. He was part of staff that led Utah to a 13-0 season, a victory over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, and a final national ranking of No. 2 following the 2008 season. The native of Lexington Park, Md.,  also spent 15 months as the head strength and conditioning coach at Davidson College in North Carolina and over two years as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Kentucky. Simon has been a speaker at several national strength and conditioning conventions. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a certified strength coach via the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. He is a 2002 graduate of Frostburg State in Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education, and holds a master’s degree (2004) from Kentucky in exercise physiology.
