Andrés Gomez Emilsson is the director of the San Francisco–based Qualia Research Institute (QRI), a nonprofit developing formal models of consciousness and emotional valence. QRI's research aims to untangle the harmonic, computational, and symmetry-driven mechanisms underlying phenomenological experience. They approach the optimization of subjective experience through two powerful psychotechnologies — psychedelics and meditation — using them to explore the state-space of mind and map the structure of qualia. In this conversation, we discuss the phenomenology of enlightenment, the non-local field effects of consciousness, and one of Andrés' side projects: how perfumes and smells modulate perception and emotional geometry. Brain reactions to meditation Welcome to today's episode, where we explore the fascinating connection between meditation and brain activity. Have you ever wondered what happens inside your mind when you meditate? Science reveals that meditation not only induces relaxation but also significantly alters brain wave patterns and neural activity. In this episode, we'll dive into how meditation enhances alpha and theta brain waves, promoting deep relaxation, memory processing, and self-reflection. We'll also uncover how advanced imaging techniques, like EEG and fMRI, help scientists visualize these changes—revealing heightened activity in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, key regions for insight and memory. Could meditation be the key to unlocking deeper cognitive function and emotional balance? Join us as we explore the science behind a mind in meditation and what it means for your mental well-being.

Earlier this year, President Obama's signature BRAIN Initiative, which has powered advances in neuroscience for the past 10 years, had its budget slashed by 40%. Over the past decade, the BRAIN Initiative made roughly $4 billion in targeted investments in more than 1500 research projects across the country and has dramatically accelerated progress tackling fundamental challenges in neuroscience. As we head into the next federal budget cycle, the future of the initiative remains uncertain. Today we take stock of how the BRAIN Initiative transformed neuroscience over the past 10 years, and what the outlook is for the future of the field. To give us an unparalleled behind the scenes view, we are fortunate to have Bill Newsome with us on the show. A world renowned expert in the brain mechanisms of visual perception and decision-making, Bill co-chaired the original BRAIN Initiative planning committee in 2013 (the same year he became the founding director of the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute here at Stanford). In this episode of the Celebrate Kids podcast, Dr. Kathy explores the benefits of handwriting and its impact on brain activity. She discusses a study conducted by researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, which suggests that handwriting can improve brain function. Dr. Kathy encourages parents to embrace the "inconvenient" aspects of parenting and engage in activities that promote active communication and brain stimulation. Tune in to learn more about the connection between handwriting and brain activity.
Dr. Stephen Storage, a child psychiatrist, discusses the key stages of child psychological development and the impact of family dynamics and early childhood experiences on a child's mental health. He explains that there are four stages of development: infancy (0-2 years), early childhood (2-6 years), middle childhood (6-12 years), and adolescence (12-18 years). Each stage has a developmental task that the child must master, and if they don't, it can lead to issues later in life. Factors such as attachment, trauma, and adverse childhood experiences can shape a child's psyche and impact their relationships and mental health as adults. Trauma shapes the biology of the developing brain, leading to changes in brain activity and blood flow. The impact of trauma on the brain can be addressed through various therapies, supplements, and lifestyle changes. Genetics play a significant role in mental health conditions, with conditions like ADHD and autism having a high heritability. The three pillars of brain health are sleep, exercise, and nutrition. Social media can have negative effects on the developing brain, leading to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and ADHD. However, social media can also be a platform for connection and spreading awareness about mental health. It is important to set limits on social media use and ensure that the content is interactive and educational. Play is crucial for the psychological development of children, promoting problem-solving, creativity, social skills, emotional regulation, and confidence. Parents should be aware of the signs of mental health struggles in their children and foster open communication.Amen Clinic@drstevenstorage@therunningwinemom_

Dr Luca Turin is a biophysicist, writer, and perfume connoisseur whose work on fragrances seems to suggest that we don't smell molecules, per se - we smell the complex vibrations of an atomic structure. Turin came to be convinced of this model for olfaction at the expense of the standard model of receptors binding smell molecules just on the basis of their shape due to a prediction he made about the smell of sulfur. If the pungent odor of rotten eggs and brimstone was due to the vibrational frequency of the sulfur atom attached to the molecule, then any other atom with a similar vibrational frequency, no matter its shape, should also smell of sulfur. He found a compatible molecule in an unexpected place, and the rest fell into place. In our latest podcast episode, we delve into the fascinating world of brain waves and neurological diagnostics with Dr. Syed Shabbir, Director of Epilepsy and Medical Director of the EEG Lab at Medstar Franklin Square Medical Center. Hosted by Debra Schindler, this episode sheds light on the complexities of the human brain and the critical role of electroencephalograms (EEGs) in diagnosing and treating neurological disorders. The human brain is an intricate organ, constantly firing neurons and generating electrical activity known as brain waves. These brain waves can be measured using EEGs, a non-invasive method that records macroscopic electroactivity in the brain. Dr. Shabbir explains that EEGs are essential for diagnosing conditions like epilepsy, where abnormal electrical activity can lead to seizures.Dr. Shabbir shares his expertise on how EEGs are conducted, the importance of sleep in detecting abnormalities, and the difference between epileptic and non-epileptic seizures. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in neurology and brain health. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Shabbir or another member of MedStar Franklin Square's neurology team, call 443-777-7320.For more episodes of MedStar Health DocTalk, go to medstarhealth.org/doctalk.
Episode NotesHave you ever wondered any of these: What the science is behind creativity? What causes creativity in the brain? What part of the brain is used in creativity? Or maybe even how to activate creativity in the brain? In this episode Kate speaks with Dr. Cheryl Arutt a clinical and forensic psychologist based in Los Angeles, California working with actors, writers, directors and showrunners supporting their psychological well-being. A specialist in trauma recovery, creativity and post-traumatic growth, Dr. Cheryl is currently Access Hollywood's go-to psychologist for trauma issues, a frequent psychological expert on many networks including CNN, HLN and DiscoveryID, and has been interviewed by the BBC and 20/20 Australia. For more information about Dr. Cheryl please visit askdrcheryl.com, and for info about her online courses for creative artists please visit www.thecreativeresilience.comDr. Cheryl explains how creativity works and what it even is from a Brain Science Perspective. We talk about the link between education and creativity. I ask her if we are doing enough to foster creativity & creating thinking in the school system? And she gives us some actionable things we can do at home for ourselves and our children to rev our own creative engines. One of my favourite moments though, comes towards the end when I ask her about the possibility of the opposite of inheriting generational trauma existing. We know we can inherit trauma but can we inherit magical wonderful things too? We shared a really tender moment - one where I felt like she was talking to ALL of us. It's beautiful, uplifting and inspiring. I think you'll be really moved by it. What Dr. Cheryl Arutt & I talk about-What creativity IS from a brain science perspective. -What is really going on inside our psychology when people say “I'm not creative”-Why processing trauma including intergenerational trauma, and converting it to post traumatic growth is so important (and is absolutely possible)-The link between education and creativity. Are we fostering creativity and creating thinking enough in the school system? And if we are seeing that our children are not getting as much focus on creativity in school what can we do at home? -What is the one question you can ask yourself (or your kids) to kick start your creativity (what is another way to do that/look at that/solve that)-How the “we only use 10% of our brains” thing is a myth-How to use creativity to safely access our traumas -What is EMDR (eye movement and desensitization and reprocessing therapy how it was discovered and how creative people can use it to heal trauma and access even more of their innate creativity-Post traumatic growth - learning to integrate and recognize all the ways you grew as a person as a result of living through your trauma-What she thinks creativity is trying to do - from a brain science perspectiveAbout Dr. Cheryl AruttDr. Cheryl Arutt is an accomplished clinical and forensic psychologist based in Beverly Hills, CA whose amalgamation of rigorous training and experience allows her to engage with people from a place of deep insight and empathy. In this episode:Campbell Will, founder of Breath Body Therapy, joins Heather to share his story about researching the power of breathwork and how breathwork isn't a trend but rather it is the single most important function of the body and can either drive us towards health or towards disease.Campbell shares that one of the best things you can do for your nervous system is to manage your state and thus how a managed state impacts parenting. Children will mirror the energy and attitude of parents. Campbell unpacks the differences between mouth breathing vs nose breathing as well as the impact each has on the mind, body, and nervous system. He also touches on stress (embracing it rather than avoiding it), self regulation (teaching the nervous system how to be calm, the link between breathing and emotions, and the difference between "breathwork" and "breath retraining". Campbell practically walks through good breathing patterns including how to properly take a deep breath. Campbell's best takeaway is to use your breathing as a way to hit the reset button throughout the day. When you begin noticing mouth breathing, use the moment to course correct. No marriage corner in this episode! We will be back next week! Another discussion with an abortion advocate on X!Shrugging off ad hominems, I pressed him to provide an absolute standard that can distinguish "medicine" from "murder."Eventually, he was kind enough to provide a theory from an article. This is the "brain-life" theory for when human life functionally begins. The article was from neuroscientist Dr. Michael Gazzaniga. He acknowledges that human life begins biologically at conception, but his practice leads him to believe bioethics can't realistically begin for a human until at least six months gestation.I walk through some statements in this article that try to build an ethical case for human life beginning around week 24, when the human brain starts working in the way we might determine death occurs when it stops working.I contend in all this that an absolute standard (from the God of the Bible) is necessary to distinguish "medicine" from "murder."Sources Referenced:Michael S. In this episode, I explain a specific writing protocol shown in hundreds of scientific studies to significantly improve immediate and long-term health. I explain how to implement this specific protocol, which takes only four days and 15-30 minutes per day. I also explain the mechanism for how the four-day writing protocol affects neuroplasticity (brain rewiring) and brain function in the short and long term. I explain how these brain changes positively impact our physical health, including our system's immune function and thus our ability to combat infections, improve sleep, reduce feelings of physical and emotional pain, lower anxiety, and bring about healing from traumas. In this Friday episode, host Jon Krohn talks to UCSF's David Moses about BRAVO (Brain-Computer Interface Restoration of Arm and Voice), a study led by Edward Chang and Karunesh Ganguly that helps patients who have lost the ability to speak to communicate once again via a speech neuroprosthesis. Postdoctoral engineer David Moses, who is a part of BRAVO, reveals the data and machine learning models that help BRAVO predict the words and facial expressions that a paralyzed patient is trying to form via their brain activity, crucially helping patients to communicate with medical practitioners and loved ones. Researchers at UCSF have developed a digital avatar to convey the words and facial expressions of a woman with severe paralysis by transmitting her brain activity. They published their results a week after scientists at UC Berkeley announced that they successfully recreated music by recording the brain waves of patients while they listened to songs. We'll talk with researchers on both projects about the rapidly developing advances in our ability to decode signals in the human brain and the promise of neuroprosthetics to help people regain the ability to speak. Guests: Robert Knight, professor of Psychology and Neuroscience, UC Berkeley Alex Silva, MD-PhD student of Medicine and Bioengineering, University of California San Francisco
