TCW Podcast Episode 240 - Nintendo: Playing with Mii & Wii From DS touch-and-stylus play to living-room motion, we trace Nintendo's road to Wii. Nintendogs and Brain Age broadened the audience to parents and grandparents. After cold receptions at Microsoft and Sony, inventor Tom Quinn's Gyration motion tech found a home at Nintendo, and internal prototypes were so fun they became Wii Sports, Wii Play, and Wii Fit. The reveal timeline runs from Reggie Fils-Aime's 2004 E3 DS debut and "Revolution" tease, to a controller-free console showing at E3 2005, to the surprise Wii Remote reveal during Iwata's Tokyo Game Show keynote, and the full unveiling at E3 2006. Built on refined GameCube internals, the Wii favored low cost, low noise, and always-on convenience, with Miis inspired by Japanese wooden dolls (Kokeshi) and a channel interface modeled on a TV wall to invite quick, family-friendly play. We round out the cartoony sports category with some attitude. NFL Street was released for the PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox on January 13, 2004 and was developed by EA Tiburon and published by EA Big.The brothers can't help but compare NFL Street to the Madden series. Ant has a bone to pick about not being included on Pete and Tom's created team. This week the brothers ask what is your favorite over the top sports game that we haven't covered in this category? NFL Blitz, NHL Hitz, or MLB Slugfest.Follow us onX @BrosBossBattlesYouTube @BrosBossBattlesInstagram @BrosBossBattleshttps://brothersandbossbattles.com/

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got the entire crew in the house once again this week, and all sorts of video games to discuss, so let's get right into the action! John kicks things off with a dive into some of the PS2 era games from Nippon Ichi Software, with a primary focus on the Disgaea series & other games of a similar ilk. After that, Kevin digs out his New 3DS once again and dives into Metroid: Samus Returns, which he is hopeful to see through (but knows deep down that it's unlikely). Finally, Randall wraps things up with a smatter of games that he's been bouncing between lately — the original Luigi's Mansion on GameCube, along with a trio of games he's still been chipping away at. Number 986I don't know what the hell happened this week, but we were all out of our minds. I think it made for a great episode, but boy was it a wild one! Controversies with rumors and Pokémon, complaining about names, technical snafus...we've got it all!
TCW Podcast Episode 239 - Nintendo: Wii Were Struggling Nintendo's struggle for cultural relevance in the lead-up to the Wii was marked by the N64's poor fit for Japanese homes and the GameCube's failure to outsell even the fledgling Xbox globally. Internally, a power struggle unfolded as Hiroshi Yamauchi prepared to retire. Former Sharp executive Atsushi Asada was brought in and became Executive Vice President and later Chairman of the Board. Satoru Iwata, whom Yamauchi saw great potential in, was appointed president of HAL Laboratory as part of a Yamauchi-backed bailout and ultimately succeeded Yamauchi as president of Nintendo. Minoru Arakawa was passed over, removed from the board, and after his retirement, replaced at Nintendo of America by Tatsumi Kimishima, who was later placed on the board himself, giving credence to the idea that Arakawa was pushed aside in favor of Iwata. We explore how, despite not facing financial collapse, Nintendo risked losing its creative identity after two struggling consoles and Sony's rising threat to its handheld dominance. Read transcriptFlame on, podcast listeners! This week we're stretching our way back to 2005 to tackle the Fantastic Four game that somehow managed to land on more consoles than Reed Richards has had scientific breakthroughs. Based on the first Fox movie that made us all question whether Hollywood truly understood what “fantastic” meant, this multi-platform adventure promised to let us clobber our way through levels faster than Ben Grimm goes through doorframes. Joining us for this cosmic-powered gaming expedition is Anthony Sytko from Capes on the Couch, who's here to help us determine whether this game was the ultimate power or just another case of “it's clobberin' time” gone wrong. We'll be exploring how this tie-in game managed to squeeze onto everything from GameCube to Game Boy Advance, and whether any version actually captured the magic of Marvel's first family – or if they all just left us feeling more invisible than Sue Storm on a bad day. So grab your unstable molecules costume and prepare for a gaming experience that's sure to be more unpredictable than Johnny Storm's dating life. It's time to see if this Fantastic Four adaptation was truly marvelous or just another victim of the superhero movie game curse! Learn such things as: Does yelling “FLAME ON!” improve your loading times? Is this the worst timeline for Dr. Doom? How long can we go without saying something about America's Ass? And so much more! You can find Anthony @CapesOnTheCouch on BlueSky, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and of course the Capes on the Couch website. This week we set sail for adventure here on the Still Loading Podcast. Joining me is new friend to the show Supertendo to talk about the originally maligned but now beloved Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Despite being more beloved now, Wind Waker had a very polarizing launch back in 2002 when it came out. This was not the Zelda most fans were looking for at the time, myself included. But a gutsy choice from Nintendo back then has proven it's staying power. Wind Waker is significantly more popular now than it was back when it released and I would like to feel like that is largely because it's intended audience grew up a bit and played the game on it's own merits and not based on their expectation. Supertendo and I discuss all of this on the episode along with how we feel the gameplay holds up, is sailing fun? Which is better the OG or the remake? Is the Triforce quest THAT bad? The third and final part of my Attack the Backlog playthrough of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, a game that wasn't what I expected. I thought the game was going to be more open, where you create your own character and find your own story within its world. I was wrong. While you can shape the character you play to an extent, you are playing a specific character--Henry in this case--who has his own story and there's little room for deviations. This isn't a bad thing, but when you're expecting salt and get sugar instead, it's impossible to not be at least a little disappointed and disappointed I was.

Read transcriptWelcome back, web-slingers and button-mashers, to another delightfully unhinged episode of Play Comics! This week we're crawling back to 2002, when flip phones were cutting-edge technology, everyone was still trying to figure out what the heck a “blog” was, and Activision decided the best way to capitalize on Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movie was to let Treyarch loose with a development kit and what we can only assume were several energy drinks and a prayer. We're diving deep into the pixelated web-slinging wonderland that somehow convinced an entire generation that swinging through New York City while your webs mysteriously attach to invisible sky anchors was totally normal. This PS2, Xbox, GameCube, and Game Boy Advance spectacular managed to squeeze Tobey Maguire's voice into a polygonal suit while adding enough extra villains to make you wonder if someone at Treyarch had been hoarding Spider-Man action figures since childhood and finally found an excuse to use them all. Joining us for this nostalgic journey through early 2000s gaming jank is the magnificent Chris Ferrell from All Things Good and Nerdy and The Official GonnaGeek Show! Chris brings his encyclopedic knowledge of all things delightfully nerdy to help us navigate the treacherous terrain between movie adaptation and comic book faithfulness. He's the perfect guide for exploring whether this game captured the essence of everyone's favorite wall-crawler or just gave us a really expensive tech demo for air-based web physics that would make actual physics professors weep quietly into their coffee. So dust off those sixth-generation consoles, prepare for some seriously chunky character models, and join us as we swing into action with a game that dared to ask the important question: “What if we took a two-hour movie and stretched it into twelve hours of gameplay by adding every Spider-villain we could think of?” The answer, as you'll discover, involves more air combat than anyone expected and enough stealth sequences to make you appreciate that this was made before every game decided it needed a mandatory stealth section. Get ready for web-slinging, wall-crawling, and more mid-air punching than should be physically possible – it's time to find out if this early millennium marvel holds up or if it belongs in the same category as those websites that still think animated GIFs are the height of digital sophistication. Learn such things as: How do you decide who to use as a boss in a movie tie in game? Will we ever have a bad Spider-Man game ever again? What if…..Chris had latched onto The Flash instead of Spidey? And so much more! You can find Chris on BlueSky @chrisferrell.bsky.social and of course his podcasts All Things Good and Nerdy and The Official GonnaGeek Show. Part one of my Attack the Backlog playthrough of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, a game that wasn't what I expected.
This week on the Game Deflators Podcast, John and Ryan share what they've been playing lately, swapping thoughts on new digital adventures and long-time favorites. John recaps his Crit Hit experience packed with tabletop energy and provides an update from the duos ongoing Strathaven Dungeons and Dragons campaign—expect magical mayhem and unexpected twists. The discussion shifts toward the industry as they explore a new study showing younger gamers are cutting back on spending, and what that might signal for the future of game development and marketing. Nintendo's latest consumer survey also takes the spotlight, with a spirited debate about the pros and cons of physical keycards versus digital downloads. To cap things off, there's a nostalgic deep dive into Sonic Adventure, looking at how the game holds up across Dreamcast and GameCube. Was it ahead of its time or a beautiful mess? Number 984I'm not kidding when I say that I think the first 1.5 hours of this podcast are some of the finest we've ever done. Fun, funny, videogame and pop culture talk, plenty of salient points... I could go on and on! I have no clue what made that first half of the show so damn good, but I'm very proud of it! Rest of the show? Well that's pure crap, but you should be used to that by now!

In this episode, John and Ryan bring a fastball of nostalgia and digital reckoning to your speakers. The duo dives into EA's announcement to shut down Anthem's servers in January 2026, dissecting the legacy of a game that promised big but struggled to soar. Then it's a deep-tech discussion as they unravel the silent killer behind your favorite handheld and console games—bit rot in SSDs affecting Nintendo 3DS, Vita, Switch, and even the shiny new Switch 2. Should collectors be worried? To close things out on a high note (and a few strikes), they revisit the chaotic joy of Mario Superstar Baseball on the GameCube. Is it still a home run, or does it whiff in today's gaming landscape?
