Join the Game Deflators podcast as John and Ryan kick things off by sharing their latest gaming pickups and video games they are currently playing; including Shadow the Tomb Raider and Risk of Rain 2. The conversation takes a turn as they break down the recent controversy surrounding Bungie allegedly using an artist's work without permission—what does this mean for corporate accountability in game development? Next, the duo digs into the ongoing efforts by a modders to reverse Nintendo-influenced changes to Palworld. With the gaming industry constantly shifting, how far can modders push back before publishers crack down? Wrapping up the episode, they shine a spotlight on Go Go Hypergrind, the quirky and elusive GameCube skateboarding game developed with input from a legendary animation studio. Does this cult classic still hold up, or is it destined to remain a deep-cut oddity? FEATURING: An unlocked episode from the NWR Patreon: It's time for our September RFN Patreon episode, and it is Round 3 of "Name that Review." Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris finally catch up on the Alphabet Soup-er Series. It was Dan's pick for the letter V, and he went with the GameCube classic Viewtiful Joe. How does this movie themed action game stand the test of time? What does HMD stand for? Why does Joe look like nerdy Fred Durst? Let's find out! Then, in Week Old News, Nintendo gets unsurprisingly litigious, Ecco is making a comeback that might be linked to the Amico, and EA is being slightly… not evil? Finally, in The Checkpoint Dan gives an update on Tiff's condition, and gives his final impressions of South of Midnight, while Kris gets a new weed wacker and tries his hand at Shotgun Cop Man. Unlike some of the games I've recently played for The Last Call, Dauntless had a good run, launching in beta in May 2018 and lasting until May 2025. That's seven good years. Well, as someone who didn't regularly play it, I can't say they were good years with any kind of authority, but as someone who played it near launch and near death, it was a fine time. Ultimately, I think it never found a way to get out from under Monster Hunter's shadow, so it was only a matter of time until it died. To all the players who will miss it now that it's gone, I hope you're able to remember all the good times you had as you try a find a new game to play with your lads.

This was a long time coming. I've talked about wanting to play The Last of Us Part II for years now, but the mood was never quite right. After luckily stumbling into a 30th Anniversary PlayStation 5 Pro, I said The Last of Us Part II would be the game to break my new console's cherry. Fast-forward six months later and that time has finally come (insert eyebrow raising here). This episode covers a little over half of the game's story and this shouldn't need to be said, but expect heavy spoilers. With all that out of the way, give this episode a listen to see if I think The Last of Us Part II is a significant improvement over its predecessor, or just more of the same.

John and Ryan are back with a Game Deflators Podcast episode breaking down the latest gaming and tech shake-ups. First up, they tackle Nintendo's pricing strategy for the Switch 2—could tariffs and rising production costs lead to a price hike in the future? Next, they explore Apple's latest courtroom maneuver in its ongoing Epic Games legal battle, as the tech giant seeks to pause a ruling that could reshape the App Store landscape. How will this impact developers, mobile gaming, and Apple's grip on its ecosystem? Finally, the duo dives into a review of Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, the cult classic GameCube RPG that dared to shake up the franchise with Shadow Pokémon, dark twists, and a compelling villain. Is it a hidden gem or just a nostalgic throwback? Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles is one of the few games I've not completed for Attack the Backlog. The reason is twofold. First, it's structured in such a way that you can just play whatever level you want in whatever order you want and actually "beating" the game feels inconsequential. Second, and more importantly, it's just an incredibly frustrating game. That said, however, there's so much potential in a game like Jedi Power Battles, which reminds one of games like Gauntlet Dark Legacy and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, that I'd love to see either a proper remake or a brand new game in the series. Sadly, I doubt that will ever happen, but I'll continue hoping because if you lose hope with Star Wars, what do you have left?

Read transcriptGet ready to tattoo the number XIII on your memory banks (preferably not on your collarbone) as Play Comics dives into the cel-shaded, amnesia-riddled world of XIII – the video game adaptation that brought Jean Van Hamme's acclaimed French graphic novel series to life on PS2, Xbox, and GameCube. This first-person shooter might be the only game where waking up on a beach with complete memory loss is just the beginning of your problems, not the end result of a gaming convention afterparty. This week, we're joined by the phenomenally talented Rob Duenas from the Sketchcraft YouTube channel, whose artistic prowess has graced everything from the hellish battlegrounds of “Spawn Kills Every Spawn” to beloved video game franchises like Crash Bandicoot and Overwatch. When Rob isn't busy making comic pages look absolutely stunning or designing characters for your favorite games, he's dropping knowledge bombs about art and creativity on his channel that would make even the most amnesia-addled protagonist remember how to hold a pencil. Together, we'll untangle the conspiracy-laden plot that had gamers frantically searching for their own identity while taking down government agents with stylized comic book “BANG!” and “BOOM!” sound effects popping up on screen. Was this 2003 cel-shaded shooter as revolutionary as its artistic style suggested, or did it wash up on gaming shores only to be quickly forgotten? Does the console version you played actually matter, or were the loading time differences just another conspiracy to keep Xbox owners feeling superior? And most importantly, how does a game based on a graphic novel series about a character who can't remember who he is manage to create such memorable gameplay? Grab your favorite tattered map with cryptic clues, practice your best “I have no idea who I am but I can somehow expertly use military weapons” face, and join us for an episode more twisty-turny than XIII's plot itself! Learn such things as: Does it matter if nobody knows that the comic source material exists? Does it matter if the art style is totally changed up from how the comic looks? Can a game be released on too many consoles? Will Chris Baker come in and answer my question? And so much more! You can find Rob on on YouTube @Sketchcraft or his website Sketchcraft which has links to whatever social media places are still alive this week. Or it could just be that LEGO games are no longer for me. (It's probably a little bit of both.) What I thought was going to be a nice chill time and a return to a game formula I remembered loving, quickly turned into a sad realization: maybe I've grown out of LEGO games. The constant need to change characters in order to interact with this and that, and having to randomly smash bricks until you find the ones you're looking for, frustrated me more than I expected in my old age--it's surprising how often I got stuck, unsure of what I needed to do in order to progress. My only hope is not Obi-Wan Kenobi, but that maybe LEGO Batman is just a bad LEGO game and the next time I return to the series will have a more favorable outcome. Until then, I'll just be left with a sour taste in mouth.

I think it (along with the rest of the GameCube wrestling games) get overshadowed by the SmackDown series, but if you grew up playing the N64 holy grail titles, you have to play this one. Day of Reckoning's controls feel like the next-step from games like WCW/nWo Revenge and WWF No Mercy. Simple enough for anyone to pick up, but there's enough depth there for us die-hards to really sink our teeth into. The crew unpacks obscure games only they seem to remember (Nanosaur, anyone?), the wild west of early online multiplayer, and the titles that cemented their lifelong love for gaming. Along the way, they reflect on how social gaming, tech misadventures, and even long family road trips helped define their tastes today—plus, they go head-to-head in a laugh-out-loud “video game synonym” quiz to close things out. This week's episode of Play Comics dives headfirst into the fiery pits of “Spawn Armageddon,” the video game that attempted to cram the first 99 issues of Todd McFarlane's demonic anti-hero saga into button-mashing glory on PS2, Xbox, and GameCube. Chains will fly, capes will billow dramatically for no apparent reason, and we'll answer the burning question: can any game truly capture the essence of a character who essentially told both Heaven and Hell to take a hike? Joining us on this unholy quest is the supremely talented Rob Duenas from the Sketchcraft YouTube channel, whose pencil might actually be mightier than Spawn's chains. When Rob isn't dropping knowledge bombs about art techniques online, he's busy creating jaw-dropping illustrations for comic books – including the mind-bending “Spawn Kills Every Spawn.” Yes folks, our guest has literally drawn Spawn murdering alternate versions of himself, which makes him uniquely qualified to judge a game where Spawn murders… well, pretty much everything else. So grab your favorite necroplasm-infused beverage, wrap yourself in a sentient cape that definitely isn't judging your choice of pajamas, and prepare for an episode more twisted than Violator's family reunion. We're diving deep into the 2003 gaming experience that asked the important question: “What if we gave the angriest character in comics a bunch of weapons and unleashed him in a world that looks suspiciously like the developer's first attempt at a 3D environment?” The answer, dear listeners, involves a lot more jumping puzzles than anyone ever asked for. Learn such things as: Who would have thought that Rob knows so much about game development? Would anyone believe that you could cram 99 issues of comic story into a single game back in 2003? Is this really how we're going to let Spawn end in console games? And so much more! You can find Rob on on YouTube @Sketchcraft or his website Sketchcraft which has links to whatever social media places are still alive this week.
