fWotD Episode 2620: Tales of Monkey Island Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 7 July 2024 is Tales of Monkey Island.Tales of Monkey Island is a 2009 graphic adventure video game developed by Telltale Games under license from LucasArts. It is the fifth game in the Monkey Island series, released nearly a decade after the previous installment, Escape from Monkey Island. Developed for Windows and the Wii console, the game was released in five episodic segments, between July and December 2009. In contrast to Telltale's previous episodic adventure games, whose chapters told discrete stories, each chapter of Tales of Monkey Island is part of an ongoing narrative. The game was digitally distributed through WiiWare and Telltale's own website, and later through Steam and Amazon.com. Ports for OS X, the PlayStation Network, and iOS were released several months after the series ended.Players assume the role of pirate Guybrush Threepwood, who—while attempting to destroy his nemesis, the undead pirate LeChuck—accidentally releases a voodoo pox across the Gulf of Melange. With the assistance of his wife, Elaine Marley–Threepwood, Guybrush seeks out a cure. The game was conceived in late 2008, due to renewed interest in adventure game development within LucasArts. It was developed concurrently with LucasArts' special edition of the 1990 game The Secret of Monkey Island; LucasArts oversaw production of Tales of Monkey Island, and ensured that it matched the remake in certain areas, such as art direction. Production began in early 2009; franchise creator Ron Gilbert was involved in project planning, while development was led by Dave Grossman, who co-designed the first two Monkey Island games. The game's music was composed by Michael Land, and the core cast of The Curse of Monkey Island reprised their voice roles.Tales of Monkey Island received generally positive reviews. Critics praised the game's story, writing, humor, voice acting and characterization; 1UP.com described Guybrush as Telltale's strongest and most expressive character yet. The game's music and graphics were also lauded. Complaints focused primarily on the perceived erratic quality of the game's puzzle design, a weak supporting cast in the early chapters, and the game's control system. Tales of Monkey Island garnered several industry awards, and was Telltale's most commercially successful project until Back to the Future: The Game.A sixth entry in the franchise, Return to Monkey Island by publisher Devolver Digital, Lucasfilm Games and Terrible Toybox, was released on September 19, 2022.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:32 UTC on Sunday, 7 July 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Tales of Monkey Island on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Matthew.

While this softens the blow of the 360 marketplace's closure there are still a massive amount of games being left behind. Physical copies of these games will and in some cases already have seen an increase in value. Digital only games like Rush ‘N Attack Expatriot, Rez HD, Vigilante 8 Arcade, and all of the Arcade Kinect games will be largely left to time, piracy notwithstanding. Here's hoping that the recently rumored renewed focus on backwards compatibility from Microsoft comes to fruition. - PS3 -While Sony had previously announced in 2021 that it was shutting down its PS3 digital storefront, the company reversed its decision after a backlash from fans. A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool
Between 2007 and 2008, the gaming industry underwent transformative changes and faced challenges both external and internal. In 2007, as the world teetered on the brink of a global recession, new blockbuster franchises like Assassin's Creed, The Witcher, and Uncharted took the stage. However, challenges like the Xbox 360's 'Red Ring of Death' highlighted the need for rigorous quality control. Mergers and acquisitions were the order of the day, with Activision merging with Vivendi and EA continuing its acquisition spree. Meanwhile, Bungie's decision to part ways with Microsoft signaled a significant shift in industry dynamics. Amidst this backdrop, digital marketplaces like WiiWare and Xbox Live Arcade emerged, revolutionizing game distribution. 2008 then witnessed the indie game scene's meteoric rise, primarily driven by Xbox Live's 'Summer of Arcade.' This event not only showcased indie games to the wider public but also set the stage for an indie creative boom that would reshape the industry. The two years posed questions about consolidation, innovation, and the evolving dynamics between major players and indie developers.Featured Games:BioShock, Portal, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Mass Effect, Rock Band, Halo 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Mario Kari Wii, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, LittleBigPlanet, Dead Space. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

“REST” The fourth stop on our Castlevania series retrospective is the (generally maligned) first handheld incarnation, Castlevania: The Adventure. Leon, Brian, Jon, Michiel and community correspondents charge up their AA batteries for a session of this brief but punishing quest. Next up though, is M2's 'remake'/tribute (arguably in name only), Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth. a relatively obscure 2009 WiiWare title that sees the panellists and the show go out on something of a whip-crackin' high. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/podcast/cane_and_rinse_issue_537.mp3 Music featured in this issue:1. WiiWare is an untapped market for us, and Gary brought in a doozie: a game about eating a lot in a very short amount of time. And you know what? It's not that terrible. It would at least have kept us entertained for a night in our dirtbag early twenties. So listen in and hear us talk about competitive eating, and learn a little more about Gary's horrible childhood.
The Elevated Nonsense crew has been talking about this episode for a while now. They ask the question, "What if Pokemon were real and part of our modern society?" This question sparks vast discussion, numerous other questions, and some strange conclusions none of us saw coming. To be fair, with a title like Elevated Nonsense, should we be surprised that things went off the rails? Zarria helmed this episode, serving as the host - a new role the group is trying out. Neptoon began the discussions, asking whether Pokemon evolved alongside humans, or if they appeared one day. What would each scenario do to our existing societies? Cas discusses the ethics of a Pokemon-based society, including living conditions in a Pokeball, protection for endangered Poke-species, and disaster preparedness when dangerous Pokemon are involved. Dani asks the logistics surrounding Pokemon and our real-world animals. She brings up ideas around eating these creatures, how they would integrate with real-world animals, and how our treatment/usage of these creatures might balance out. Iain - aside from playing Devil's Advocate in everyone else's debates - talks about how Pokemon battles would work in our world. The extent of rules and regulations, as well as the potential for underground Pokemon battles, are discussed at length. Overall, any Pokemon fan should have a great time with this episode. The season has turned, and for a brief time in Video Game Grooves climes life will be a bit more active and a bit more moist. So we are joined by Aaron from Ship to Shore Media to preside over the action and the, uh, moistness in the form of video game music on vinyl records! Specifically this episode the action belongs to the release of Gradius Rebirth from Ship to Shore. The Rebirth series is a bit special in the pantheon of games and their remakes, and Gradius in particular, ostensively lost forever on Wiiware, lives on with its cutscenes and darkness in this vinyl release. We look at both the narrative-driven elements of DARKNESS and also the fast-paced space jet vibe ala Manabu Namiki, and generally appreciate the little spot Gradius Rebirth holds in the series history. We move on to the moisture with Dropsy, from Joyful Noise Recordings, and it feels just like a damp hug. The mood of Dropsy is something rather unique as well, and we get as close as we can stand to the horrifying/maudlin/sweet combination without freaking out. We appreciate the musical output of the 12-hour Chris Schlarb recording marathon, as well as the Mothersbaughan element of the album, and its overall listenability. Of course we have new releases and represses and shipping announcements to cover, as always! And finally, we talk to Aaron about the sustainability of the market for video game music on vinyl through the introduction of new (and possibly younger) devotees, and what that means for the release schedule and selections for labels in 2021. Titles and topics include Paper Mario 64, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, mobile games, Custom Robo 64 and Lost Winds for Wiiware. The main topic delves into what we think the upcoming animated Mario film could be like. The guys discuss story, animation, the wider animation industry and even some tangents on what other Nintendo property adaptations could be like. This weeks musical selection is the song Beauty and the Beast from the Super Nintendo game.
Timecodes und Themen 0:00:00 = Einleitung 0:03:05 = "Niemand will darueber sprechen, was NX besonders machen koennte.

This week on Connectivity the trio of Nick, Adam and Carmine discuss their reactions to the Smash Brothers Direct. After that, the conversation then moves onto a couple of listener mail questions, one being about open world game design and the other about favourite Nintendo musical tracks. After the break, the main feature topic is all about games that people may have overlooked on the various Nintendo digital game stores. The trio wade through a discussion that ranges from Wiiware to the Wii U eShop, but not without some tangents along the way. Six Dragonite and a Ditto and it DOESN'T happen on Route 34? Color me shocked. The day after the live telethon for Child's Play, the crew gathered to discuss things with more traditional funding. New Business begins with a couple of tag team matches (playa) as Stephen and Austen test PS4 2.0's best non-sleep related feature in Shareplay, bringing new life to old local multiplayer games (even if the devs don't agree). To follow up, Stephen and Donald get a (Fantasy) Life and tackle the game from two wildly different perspectives. Donald then goes for the other end of the Shinovi spectrum by representing his (brother's) hometown in Vita prison life sim Freedom Wars, and after a brief warning about the Sonic Boom 3DS demo ends with early gushing over presumptive GOTY from all right-thinking outlets, Bayonetta 2. Austen sold out to The Man and picked up an Xbone, which explains the Explicit tag, and had a blast with Insomniac's revenge fantasy/Dreamcast tribute Sunset Overdrive and a couple of other mentions. Including a sequel to a game with the rare double release of WiiWare and physical DS - which Donald got wrong. For Whatcha Watchin', Stephen leads with a brief Slugterra update before diving into quality animation in the form of Big Hero 6, and the extremly rote Freezing. Donald keeps the assassination theme going with the recent Keanu Reeves vehicle John Wick and still can't wrap his head around Bayonetta: Bloody Fate. Austen has some issues with some anime dubs - Hellsing Ultimate and the Cardcaptor Sakura movie - but is a little happier with the CW's best show since Smackdown, Arrow.A brief double-feature touches on the Nintendo Direct including the announcement Donald was dreading, the announcement Austen was apathetic toward, and the lack of an announcement to get Stephen excited. After a quick debrief of the telethon segment - thanks to everyone who helped it clear $6,000 and get us catching prehistoric predators with Zach Miller - it's on to the Mushrooms for the return of old friends and Stephen's terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad week. It's coming up on the end of the year, and we wouldn't mind your ideas for categories for the end of the year show - you know it's coming! Email us, tweet @nfrpodcast or leave them below! Until next we meet, please make sure a prominent internet messageboard doesn't eat us alive. This podcast was recorded on November 9 and edited by Donald Theriault.
