Ep124: Simple Solutions to Your Chronic Aches & Pains (and Where They Came From) | with Dr. Sadie Sanders

Optimize Yourself

It’s astonishing that less than 5% of adults are moving 30 minutes or more a day1, so much so that it’s been said “Sitting is the new smoking.” Although, I’ve argued for years that it’s not so much sitting that’s the problem…it’s being SEDENTARY that is the new smoking (whether you are sitting or standing). Clearly working from home amidst a global pandemic hasn’t made this any less true. Being sedentary is one of the root causes of chronic aches and pains. If you are listening to (or reading) this while sitting, you likely have experienced a sore back or stiff neck from too much computer time. Maybe you have tight shoulders and tension headaches. You probably have resigned yourself to just “dealing with it” because you don’t have time or money for long workout routines or expensive equipment. It’s just the price of “getting old,” right? Well it doesn’t have to be. Today’s guest is Dr. Sadie Sanders, a doctor of chiropractic and a biomechanical guru, and she has a wealth of simple solutions for your chronic pains (that don’t require a visit to a doctor’s office). Dr. Sanders is called the “Body Whisperer” by many of her patients and for good reason – she has a knack for knowing just what the body needs to bring it back into balance, and she focuses on root causes, not just treating symptoms. In today’s 2-part in-depth conversation we talk about Dr. Sanders’ extensive knowledge of biomechanics as well as physiology and how it’s all interconnected. But more importantly, we dive into how to eliminate your chronic pains right at your desk or in your living room using very simple stretches and exercises inside the “Move Yourself Activity Video Vault” (part of my Working From Home Survival Guide which I have made available to you for free). If you’re ready to eliminate your aches and pains and looking for simple solutions that you can do in just a few minutes a day…right at your desk…this episode is for you. [Disclaimer: This episode is pulled from two in-depth interviews from the Fitness In Post archives that we stitched into a single marathon episode. Also since recording, Dr. Sanders has since moved out of the Los Angeles area, but her Health and Human Performance clinic is still thriving in Woodland Hills with a new head doctor, Dr. Cobey who is my go-to for all my biomechanical needs. And yes, they are still fully functional during the pandemic.] Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here’s What You’ll Learn: What is the goal of a chiropractor and how do they evaluate you and your joints? If you’re sitting while reading this and grimacing at lower back pain, neck tension, or you experience regular headaches, you’d be surprised at how easy it is to alleviate all of these issues in just a few minutes a day…right at your desk. In today’s interview I chat with returning guest Dr. Sadie Sanders, a doctor of chiropractic, biomechanical guru, and the CEO of Health & Human Performance in Woodland Hills, CA. For those that know Dr. Sadie, they call her “The Body Whisperer,” and as a patient of hers, I understand why. She is to the body what Mozart is to the piano (She’s that good). Dr. Sanders and I talk about the many different causes for chronic pains throughout the body and how many of them are caused simply by not moving all day long. But more importantly we dive into how to eliminate your chronic pains right at your desk using very simple stretches and exercises using our brand new “Move Yourself Activity Video Vault.” And here’s the coolest part for you: Since you are one of my loyal listeners, if you join the 5X Challenge this week I’m giving you 100% FREE access to every single video in this vault through next Tuesday, Jan 17th with no purchase information required and no hidden payments when you’re done. The first time I met Mike Bledsoe three years ago, he was hunched over in the corner of a busy porch at the convention meditating with a "" app. I took one look at this bearded, tattooed Crossfitter and judged him to be yet another exercise and fitness junkie meathead. I was dead wrong. Mike is profound, interesting, chock full of knowledge on everything from plant-based medicine to the fitness business to meditation and breathwork, and (like me) was homeschooled K-12. He is one of the founders and owners of Faction Strength & Conditioning Home of CrossFit Memphis. He has a degree in Exercise & Sport Science as well as a long list of meaningless certifications that might awe some people but not most and definitely not the people who are probably on this website. At 19 years of age, Mike thought he should donate his body and mind to the service of his country in the US Navy. It was there that he discovered that he didn’t like taking orders. He did extremely well and had a good time, but being part of a system was not his ideal (and he’s one idealistic dude). Getting out was scary, but made the entire world available to him. At the ripe old age of 24, he began college at the University of Memphis in the business department but before the first semester could end he changed his major to Health & Human Performance. It was there that he was first introduced to Olympic Weightlifting, by Dr. Brian Schilling. While in school he regularly donated his body and parts of it to research in the name of science. It was during his senior year that he and a guy named Rob Conner started CrossFit Memphis. Dropping out of school after the first semester of grad school, Mike devoted his time to growing the business and becoming a better coach. Mike “Matraca” Bledsoe (matraca means chatterbox in portuguese) is most well known for his ability to not shut up, and you'll understand why during our discussion in today's podcast, in which you'll discover: -Why Mike was so confused the first time he saw a PVC pipe in a gym.... -The strange story of Mike and Ben's meeting at Joe DeSena's farm in Vermont... -What Mike discovered by going on his first magic mushroom trip in a dog park... -How psilocybin and ayahuasca rewire neurons in your brains... -How to find a good shaman if you decide you want to do ayahuasca... -Mike's one-two combo for morning breathwork and deep tissue work... -Mike's evening routine, and what he completely avoids for 90 minutes before bed... -And much more...
