Send us a textBerly and LA recap the season seven Supernatural episode, Hello, Cruel World. Over drinks, they'll discuss lore, gore, and what they adore about the Winchesters and their adventures. Now, let's get tipsy! CW/TW for violent and lewd commentary; listeners beware!
We love a good duo episode! Join August and Noah as they discuss how a lot happens in the episode but also not really anything? Some topics of discussion include: Bobby is father, Leviathan lore, how unrealistic it is that a hospital isn't looking into the weird deaths that keep happening (plot plot convenience convenience), as well as talking about Lucifer's abuse towards Sam and how manipulative and sneaky he is. Make sure you listen to the end as Noah gets a scare that Bobby is dead and August and Noah make up a new word? Content Warning: this episode contains discussions around mental health, trauma, hallucinations/questioning reality. We always try to talk about these things with gentleness and sensitivity. Please take care of yourself and listen with discretion. This week discusses Season 7 Episode 2: Hello Cruel World through the theme of Vulnerability. Find us online at queeringthingspodcast.com! This week: Hello Cruel World, original air date September 30, 2011.Written by Ben Edlund, directed by Guy BeeShort episode, long outtakes, in keeping with the fact that Cas isn't even technically in this one. We kinda messed up, guys. But! We still manage to talk about Cas and the implications of his presence and absence.Mentioned in this episode:Sera Gamble clipTumblr: https://thecascast.tumblr.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/TheCasCastEmail: thecascast@gmail.com
And boy is it ever cruel! The subtitle there refers to the plot climax of this one, but also to season seven as a whole. The entire thing is built on pain being the key to reality, and doesn't that just suck! Like, massively! It sucks for Sam, it sucks for Dean, and it sucks for all of us! But we shall endure. :'D We lose Cas right at the start, and then Dean carries his coat away like a widow leaving a soldier's funeral with a flag, and that sets the stage for his grief and guilt for the first long segment of the season. Meanwhile, Sam's just not coping well with his smashed walls and resurfacing Hell trauma, and using Dean's technique of repressing and denying is really, really not working for him. So, bring on the pain and losses and gooey jerks who are this season's Big Bad-- a metaphor for capitalism. Wheee. LINKS! Today, March 24th 2023, would have been comedian Louie Anderson's 70th birthday. I first met Louie in 1989, when he published a book of letters to his alcoholic father, a book called Dear Dad. We talked again about that book a couple of years later, and then in 1993 I interviewed him again, for his book called Goodbye Jumbo, Hello Cruel World. Louie struggled with his weight, and his self-image, for decades. Of course, he turned his weight problem into a source of comedy that made him immensely popular. But it was in writing both those books that Louie Anderson really started to figure out who he was, and what he really wanted. So I've decided today to offer you highlights of both interviews , starting with our conversation about Dear Dad. S

LOUIE ANDERSON is one of the greatest comedians of our generation. Johnny Carson invited him to make his national television debut on the "The Tonight Show" in 1984, and the rest became history. “Leno,” “Letterman,” "Comic Relief," Showtime, and HBO specials followed, as well as a hosting gig on “Comedy Showcase,” the late-night series that followed “Saturday Night Live” for over 3 years. As Louie became a household name, doors opened for him as an actor. He guest-starred on hit shows like “Grace Under Fire,” “Touched by an Angel,” and “Chicago Hope” while starring in memorable films like “Coming to America” opposite Eddie Murphy and the classic “Ferris Bueller's Day Off.” In 1995 Louie put his creative energies to work on the Saturday morning animated series “Life with Louie,” based on Anderson's own childhood life with his father which won three Humanitas Prizes for writing on a children's animated series, making him the only three-time recipient of this award. It also earned a Genesis Award, and most significantly, it garnered two Emmy Awards. As an author, his best selling books include the New York Times Best Seller Dear Dad - Letters From An Adult Child, a collection of alternately touching and outrageous letters from Louie to his late father, and Good-bye Jumbo...Hello Cruel World, a self-help book for those who struggle with self-esteem issues, as only an award-winning comedian could write it. Louie Anderson is one of the most versatile and successful comedians working in the world today. He is loved by the television audiences who never missed his hundreds of stand-up appearances on late night talk shows, network series', and HBO comedy specials. He is adored by standing-room-only crowds from New York to Vegas, respected by readers of his books, and is worshipped by the rising young comics he mentors throughout the country. Louie Anderson has sold out, an unprecedented, seven consecutive New Year's Eve performances and has averaged over SEVEN THOUSAND PEOPLE a performance during that stretch. In the world of funny, when it comes to comedy, Louie isn't just a great comedian—he is one of the hottest, best selling comedians in the history of the our country, sustaining a lasting admiration and draw to his loyal fans for almost a quarter of a century. This week's show featured music from Stone Gossard, The Gits, The Supersuckers, Violent Femmes, Saul Williams, Tullycraft, Talking Heads, Velocity Girls and brand new Modest Mouse. Plus, the Angry Malcontent ranted about Professor Gates-gate. It was a slightly Network-ish moment.
