In this episode I dive deep with visual artist Jared Freschman about his personal spiritual journey. We talk about the importance of finding new modes of spiritual identity. We talk about how organized religion typically doesn't create space for Queer people and how that drove him to find his own way of connecting to the mystical and magical components of life. We talk about the influence Tarot and Astrology has had on him, as well as his own Jewish background. We discuss the power of art to carve out these new kinds of spiritual spaces for people like himself. We also dive into his own personal color theory and his approach to creating these powerful, personal expressions of his own spiritual identity. --------------- Jared Freschman (b. 1996) is a Jewish-American artist based in NYC. Originally from Hockessin, Delaware. He received his BFA from Pratt Institute in 2018. Freschman also studied abroad in Jerusalem, Israel/ Palestine at Bezalel School of Art and Design. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn.Jared Freschman's fluid compositions conjure the hidden spiritual practices of today's queer youth. Ombré fades and jewel-tone color palettes open a door to nostalgic, dream-like memories. Freschman illustrates allegories that combine vivid flashbacks, mysticism, and hyper-feminine archetypes that own the composition. He builds a liminal space where control lies in the hands of queer individuals. Perspectives shift from first to third person, and the artist's lived experiences mingle with those of a broader queer collective.Freschman has exhibited his work internationally at Field Projects (NYC), Eve Leibe Gallery (London), PRIOR Art Space (Barcelona), The National Arts Club (NYC), The Untitled Space (NYC), Project Gallery V (NYC), GIFC (Norway), The Museum of American Illustration (NYC), Cooler Gallery (Brooklyn), The Delaware Contemporary (Wilmington, DE), Israel Illustration Week (Tel Aviv), Gallery 102 (Washington DC), The Delaware Art Museum (Wilmington, DE). His work has been featured in Marie Claire Taiwan, Dirtybarn, Artforum, ARTpublika Magazine, AIGA Eye on Design, Working Not Working, The Drawing Stall, FORGE Art Magazine, and more. Freschman has also received awards from American Illustration & Society of Illustrators. This week, in Hockessin, Delaware, a bright, successful couple has only one major fault... their loser son, who can't seem to make his way in the world, despite all the support, and money that he gets from his parents. Instead, he joins bad bands, with crazy names, drops out of several colleges, and gets kicked out of the Marines, in less than 2 weeks. This all ends in a horribly brutal, cruel, and cold blooded attack on the people who made his easy life possible. But he's not done, yet. He hits the road, resulting in more horrifying murder!!Along the way, we find out that nobody knows that Delaware is a place, that your band's name may say something about its musical quality, and that even if a witchcraft spell is placed upon you, you can't go around the country, killing people!!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! In this week's episode, I have an in-depth conversation with hip-hop Math edutainer Keziah Finney about her personal math journey, the founding of Lyrical Math, the power of hip-hop as a medium for Math pedagogy, and so much more! To learn more about Keziah's work, you can visit the Lyrical Math website at lyricalmath.com and follow her on Instagram & Twitter (@lyricalmath). BIO: Mrs. Finney was born in Chester, Pennsylvania and moved to New Castle, Delaware at a young age with her mother, father and four older brothers. She grew up in a musical family and spent years in her family church choir gaining her first experience sharing her voice through music in front of a large crowd. She loved teaching from a young age and knew she wanted to be a teacher since elementary school. Growing up with many siblings and cousins being rappers and music producers, she gravitated towards hip-hop music and performed as a rapper in many talent shows while growing up. In 1998, she graduated from William Penn High School. She completed her undergraduate degree in 2002 with a Bachelor's in Biology from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Upon graduation, she started her teaching career in Chester, Pennsylvania at Village Charter School. Diving into her love of teaching , she returned to college and received her Master's of Education from Wilmington University. Over the past 18 years, she has taught middle school math and science and various middle schools in Chester, Pennsylvania and in Wilmington, New Castle and Hockessin, Delaware. As an artist and educator, Mrs. Finney noticed early on in her teaching career how quickly students memorized and recited hip-hop songs throughout the school day. While her students walked in the hallways, socialized in the school cafeteria or completed class work, she would find many of them rapping popular hip-hop songs or even creating their own lyrics. These moments led to reflection on her own similar experiences with hip-hop when she attended grade school. When introducing math lessons to her class in the traditional fashion, she would see a disconnect in her students. Eager to have her students engaged in the lesson as well as increase their level of comprehension, Mrs. Finney started creating lyrics that explained the math content she was hired to teach. When she shared the lesson lyrically, her students lit up! Their excitement for learning increased and so did their level of comprehension. Administrators, teachers, parents, students and community members expressed their appreciation for Mrs. Finney's ability to tailor the curriculum to meet the needs of her students. This made for a more rewarding and memorable classroom experience. Mrs. Finney expanded her ability to teach more students through music when she met her husband, James Finney. With his undergraduate degree in Studio Production and Digital Filmmaking and Master's in Applied Technology in Education, Mr. and Mr. Finney combined their passion for education and disciplines to create Lyrical Math. With this edutainment program, Mrs. Finney created two CDs that teach basic math skills through hip-hop music. With the support of her husband and four children, Mrs. Finney aspires to help students all over the world become more engaged and interested in math and science by teaching through educational hip-hop music.

Sam Hoadley, Mount Cuba Center's Director of Horticultural Research deliberately neglects his plants. His responsibility is to conduct the trials by which this renowned botanical garden in Hockessin, Delaware tests native plants to see which are garden stars – and attractive to pollinators – and which are garden and pollination duds. After selecting a popular genus, Sam and his crew collect all the types they find available in nurseries, establish them side-by-side in the test plots, and leaves them to fend for themselves. The results he collects into detailed, comprehensive reports, an invaluable resource that Mount Cuba makes available to gardeners for free.

Which is correct, yes, those are all examples of exercise. However, exercise is also so much more. If running on a treadmill has you feeling like a hamster on a wheel, there are other options. There are even hidden ways of getting exercise that don't feel like exercise at all. Exercise is defined as “physical activity to sustain or improve health and fitness.”Before we discuss ways of getting your body moving, let's discuss the many benefits that increased physical activity can have on your life. You may be surprised to find out that it isn't limited to weight loss. What are the benefits of exercise? Improves mood. Have you ever heard the term “runner's high?” Ask anyone who has a regular exercise routine, they'll all tell you how great they feel afterwards. Not only is there a sense of accomplishment, but there's a scientific reason why. When you exercise, you stimulate the natural endorphins in your brain. So you'll get that “ahhhhhh” happy feeling when you're done.Improves sleep. Chances are you've been to a party, barbecue or beach where children are running around, hyper, having the best time. Parents usually make a comment about how well the children will be sleeping tonight. It's true! Studies have shown that an increase in physical activity can be directly linked to the amount of slow wave sleep you get. Slow wave sleep refers to deep sleep, where the brain and body have a chance to rejuvenate. Decreases pain.Maybe you've heard the term “A body in motion, stays in motion. A body at rest, stays at rest.” If you suffer from arthritis or some other painful physical ailment, you may equate movement with pain. However, making an effort to continue moving throughout the day can actually decrease your pain. *Please check with your Doctor to see if exercise is a good idea for your particular ailment.Improves your cardiovascular health.Improving blood sugar and reducing risk of Type II diabetes, or improving DMII for those already diagnosed. A Cochran review comparing 14 randomized controlled trials with 377 participants showed a decrease in HgbA1c of about 0.6% with exerciseReducing blood pressure and triglycerides, decreasing your risk of heart attack and stroke. Improves brain function.Exercise improves blood flow to the brain which reduces inflammation, lowers the level of stress hormones and decreases the risk of cognitive impairment from dementia and Alzheimer's. Decreases fat tissue and increases muscle. The most obvious and well-known reason people exercise, the changes in physical appearance. Think of your body like a furnace. Exercising “ignites the furnace” and uses our stored fat as energy to fuel our physical activity. The more physical activity, the more fat is burned for fuel.

Welcome to Hockessin, DE, a census-designated place! The community is not a town or a city, but is a populated area without an incorporated entity or local government. Unfortunately Keith wasn't here to teach us how to pronounce Hockessin, but we came up with a few doozies ourselves. The area is home to several mushrooms farms that produce white button cap mushrooms. It was also home to a snuff mill until 1954. Thanks to Dr. Jess, we now know the many types of snuff available for consumption. Yuck! Despite the areas lack of legal designation, it has been home to several notable people including boxer Bernard Hopkins, baseball player Tony Graffanino, and world renowned jazz singer and bandleader Cab Calloway. We hope you enjoy our quick stop in Hockessin!
