The city got some surprising news this week with the announcement that Kim Schatzel was out as president of the University of Louisville. What started as a Tuesday night rumor quickly evolved into a close-door meeting of the University of Louisville Board of Trustees on Wednesday. Louisville Business First reporter Michael Jones was at that meeting and shares his insights on the situation on this week's Access Louisville podcast. Perhaps most surprising was that Schatzel's departure was followed by the quick appointment of Gerry Bradley to replace her. Bradley is the third president in five years. UofL has experienced a rotating cast of leaders since longtime president James Ramsey resigned in 2016.Also on this week's show, we discuss the former Highland United Methodist, which recently hit the market. Star Auerbach and her father Rob Auerbach, co-founder of Rainbow Blossom Natural Food Market, had purchased this property in 2023 and were considering a boutique hotel for the space. But after Rob Auerbach passed away in 2024, Star says she's no longer able to do the project on her own — though she would still like to see someone else pick it up.Further, we talk about some recent Downtown property sales including Advocacy Plaza near the courthouse and the former MPI Printing building on Jefferson Street. We chat about development near Lynn Family Stadium and we've got an interesting story involving two bars in NuLu, both of which are named Taj.There's also some content from our sponsors at Baird. LBF's Lisa Benson has an interview with investment strategist Ross Mayfield — they're talking market volatility, tariffs, bourbon and other economic news.Access Louisville, sponsored by Baird, is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. It's available on popular podcast services including Apple Podcasts and Spotify (which are linked above.)

California's lack of mental health infrastructure is leaving some of our neediest people on the streets or to languish in jails and prisons which simply exacerbate their conditions. James Ramsey, who had repeated issues with mental health and problematic run-ins with law enforcement, received advocacy for long-term care by the Anti-Police Terror Project for years to no avail, as a result of over-crowded social support systems. Without that material and ongoing support, James Ramsey ended up on the streets, and his name appeared in the newspaper for having assaulted an Asian elder. Joining us this morning to discuss the lack of services and infrastructure in California to take care of our community members with high needs – especially those with criminal convictions – is Emily Hoeven, an Opinion columnist at The Chronicle. Good morning... good afternoon... good evening... No matter what time you're listening, yes, you've made it to the Friday edition of Noles News Now. I'm your host, Brian Pellerin who will be guiding you in to the weekend with the latest news and notes from around Florida State football, baseball, and more. The biggest story to look ahead to is the unofficial start of ACC football season next week with the ACC Football Kickoff media days in Charlotte. The Seminoles will be sending veterans Jordan Travis, Fabien Lovett, and Jammie Robinson alongside Mike Norvell on July 20th - that's next Wednesday. The Noles will be just more than a month away from taking the field for the first time at that point and two months from beginning ACC play on a Friday night in Louisville. An announcement from ESPN this week actually slid that kickoff back 30 minutes so kickoff for that game is now at 7:30 pm, in case you've got to adjust your calendar or travel plans. It's been a busy summer on the recruiting trail for the Florida State Seminoles coaching staff as they continue to shape the future of this roster. One of the biggest areas to address is solidifying the trenches and recent offensive line commit Roderick Kearney looks to be the centerpiece of that effort going forward. This week, he joined our Florida State of Recruiting podcast for an interview about FSU, new offensive coordinator Alex Atkins and much more. Check it out to hear from Big Rod, a leader of the Noles for the future. Of course, Atkins was a huge part in landing Kearney and many other commits this offseason. He's been an incredible asset on the recruiting trail for FSU so the question is how does he rank in compared to other Florida State's other top recruiters of the past decade. David Stout tries to tackle that in a column posted to Tomahawk Nation dot com this morning. There have been some great assistants and Atkins is off to a strong start to be among if not the best of the bunch. Link Jarrett is hoping his newest hire will also be a major recruiting ace for the Noles as he's landed his first recruiting coordinator as the head man of FSU. Jarrett announced Thursday that Rich Wallace will make the jump from Notre Dame to Tallahassee with him to join the Noles coaching staff in the recruiting coordinator role. Wallace already has ties to the Sunshine State with his experience at Jacksonville and UCF. One day before FSU football starts their season next month against Duquesne, the athletic department will induct the newest members of the Florida State Hall of Fame class announced this week. In total, 10 Seminole greats will have their names added to the hall including football stars Snoop Minnis and E.G. Green, golf star Brooks Koepka, baseball player of the year James Ramsey, soccer greats Amanda Dacosta and Toni Pressley plus others from tennis, swimming and diving and more. That'll do it for this edition of Noles News Now. If you like what you hear, remember to subscribe, follow and rate the show to help us out and let other Noles fans know about the easiest way to stay up to date on all things FSU 3 times a week. In this episode of ‘The Staffroom', we chatted with English Teacher and author Jamie Thom (@teachgratitude1 ) about the way slowing-down and taking-stock can lead to better teacher well-being and student outcomes. We also talked to Humanities teacher, James Ramsey about the way low-stakes, high-impact formative assessment strategies are making a difference in his learning area. In our first interview, Jamie Thom speaks about his book, ‘Slow Teaching: Finding Calm, Clarity and Impact in the Classroom' and refocusing practice so that teachers only do things for the right reasons. Here's a break-down of Jamie's ideas: What inspired Jamie to write ‘Slow Teaching'? How have his professional experiences shaped his reflective ideas on slow teaching, finding calm and clarity in the classroom? (3:40) What is ‘Slow Teaching' about? (3:40) What is Jamie's ‘tortoise and the hare' analogy? How does Jamie believe this fable reflects the teaching profession? (7:55) What made Jamie realise that a slower approach was key to well-being and making an impact in the classroom? (11:13) Why does Jamie believe nuanced skills such as classroom management, non-verbal communication etc are essential in developing a slow and measured teaching style? (13:40) Which strategies from Jamie's book have had a profound impact in his classroom? (18:31) How does Jamie ensure modelling is used effectively with his students? (23:35) What are Jamie's views on well-being? What are Jamie's top three well-being tips for a new graduate teacher? (26:17) Head of Learning Area at Corpus Christi College, James Ramsey speaks with us about the practical ways formative assessment and feedback is having an impact in his classes. Here's a break-down of James' responses: How have formative assessment strategies changed James' practice in recent years? (32:50) In what ways does James believe the shift away from frequent summative assessment has changed students' mindset? (35:10) What does James think are the main principles which under-pin his teaching and learning philosophy? (36:30) Which tech-tools does James believe have helped enhance his use of formative assessment? How do these tools work? (39:50) What practical approaches has James implemented which help save time and/or reduce teacher workload? (42:50) We hope you enjoy this episode of The Staffroom and found Jamie and James' ideas as through-provoking as we did. We certainly will be considering ways to slow down and stream-line our own practice! We wish Jamie Thom and James Ramsey all the best for 2018 and her continuing success of The Learning Scientists project Until next time! Coaching with Flexibility and Communication with James Ramsey    During this episode of Ahead of the Curve, I interviewed James Ramsey, Hitting Coach at Georgia Tech. James Ramsey talks about the importance of clarity, simple wins, communicating with players, measuring players in the off-season, his BP set-up, what a hitting meeting looks like in the fall, and not overthinking things.    Episode Highlights:    How did James Ramsey get involved in baseball and as a coach?    Was coaching something that he had in the back of his mind when he was playing baseball?  What are some life lessons that he has learned from other coaches that he will never forget?    What was his transition like into the Georgia Tech program?  What did this past off-season look like for him?  Are there any set things that he is looking for in players to group them together to address their needs?  When new players arrive on the team where does he start with them?  What does ‘plan and approach’ mean to James?  What kinds of competitions have they used in their training practices that they really like?   What are some different ways that he really likes to train game-like practices, especially on the hitting side?  What are some different ways that we can train players to make better decisions?   What is his advice to be a better communicator?  What does his BP set-up look like? What is something that James Ramsey is excited about learning and applying? What changes has he been making from last year to this year? What are things his players get excited about doing during practice?  Is there anything that he believes that other coaches might disagree with? What is something we would notice at one of James Ramsey’s practices? Are there any resources that James Ramsey would recommend?  3 Key Points: Make sure you are ready for when your opportunities come.  Keep the most important things important.  Have an accountability partner on the field that can keep the expectations going on and off the field.      Tweetable Quotes: “I love to read and it’s baseball, it’s mental toughness, it’s corporate culture books. I think that baseball has a lot to learn from some other areas.” – James Ramsey  (09:18) “Being able to kind of relate off the field too as well. I think telling the players, ‘I don’t know what I don’t know and I’m new to this as well and I’m going to make mistakes. But I’m going to make them aggressively.” – James Ramsey  (11:46) “I did 6 BP groups, laminated them, stuck them out there so I didn’t have to take the time on the day-to-day to do it and so, some of them are grouped by ‘rightys’ versus ‘leftys’ as basic as that sounds. Can we throw a different angle on the machine?” – James Ramsey  (15:54) “I have clarity. That is one thing I try to search for.” – James Ramsey  (18:20) “These guys have grown up in a showcase setting where some of them have never had a first and third plays put on.” – James Ramsey  (19:22) “As far as the team is concerned, doing self-evaluations, doing evaluations on the coaching staff, I want to make sure, hey, am I communicating this clearly?” – James Ramsey  (22:05) “We can overthink it sometimes too. So it’s, can I just fundamentally get to, where did this kid come from? What is his style of learning? What is his style of coaching? What is his motivation style that he likes?” – James Ramsey  (22:58) “Every pitch a pitcher is forced to throw, I believe that there is probably a good correlation to winning a game.” – James Ramsey  (40:24) Resources Mentioned:  Ahead of the Curve Podcast Twitter: @AOTC_podcast James Ramsey: Twitter Instagram

Strange Fruit #177: Governor Matt Bevin... Can he do that?

Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin continues to do things his own way. He's been using executive orders to make changes with far-reaching implications — and getting sued for it. This week, we check in with Kentucky Public Radio's capital bureau chief, Ryland Barton, to get an update on Bevin's latest acts as governor. The one that got the most attention this week was Bevin's announcement that he was disbanding the University of Louisville's board of trustees (and that university president Dr. James Ramsey would step down). Bevin dismissed all the trustees and replaced them with three interim board members of his own choosing. But can he do that? A group of university faculty members (including our own Dr. Kaila Story) say they're worried the shakeup could affect the school's accreditation. Attorney General Andy Beshear is taking Bevin to court over this and other board reorganizations he says violate statutes. Dr. David Owen, chair of the Philosophy Department, joins us this week to talk about faculty concerns. And Lexington's EMW clinic closed this week after Bevin sued the abortion provider, saying they were performing abortions without the correct license. He's also sued Planned Parenthood of Kentucky and Indiana. Reproductive rights activist Molly Shah talks about what the loss of reproductive choices could mean in women's lives.

The fallout continues from Halloween, when UofL President Dr. James Ramsey and his staff dressed up in stereotypical "Mexican" costumes for a luncheon. The photo went viral, and a few written apologies were issued, but they've been lacking. This week, an open letter was sent to Dr. Ramsey and the Board of Trustees, signed by 78 faculty members, and co-authored by one of our guests this week, Dr. David Owen, Chair of the Philosophy Department. Meanwhile, a group of students spent thirty hours coming up with a plan of action, and a list of demands to present to Dr. Ramsey and the school. This week, Ramsey granted them a meeting, but would only allow eight students in (and none of their faculty advisers) and would only give them half an hour. Tania Avalos was one of those eight students, and she joins us to talk about what happened at the meeting. She says Ramsey didn't seem to want to listen to them, but to talk more. When they interrupted and asked him to hear them out, Ramsey reportedly questioned their level of education and the way their mothers raised them. "He just insulted us," Avalos said, "and he didn't allow us to talk." "We were trying to explain to him from the beginning how Mexicans have been oppressed in this country," Avalos said, "and he interrupted and said, 'You know what? You think you know everything.'" "He actually said, 'If my god forgave me, I'm sure that you guys can too,'" she reported. We'll keep you posted on this story as it continues to develop. The Board of Trustees has yet to publicly comment on the letter from faculty. Also this week, Kentucky Public Radio's Capitol Bureau Chief Ryland Barton joins us to help us interpret the results of this week's general election. Governor Elect Matt Bevin has promised to repeal the expansion of Medicaid in Kentucky, causeing 400,000 low income citizens to lose health care, but no one seems to know yet whether he can do that through Executive Order, or whether he'll need to go through the legislature. And in our feature interview this week, we speak to Dr. Carol Anderson. She's an associate professor of African American Studies and history at Emory University, and was in town to deliver the 9th Annual Anne Braden Memorial Lecture. Dr. Anderson's speech focuses on what she calls "white rage" - essentially a fear and loathing of people of color. We talk about the different manifestations of racism in our society, including one of the most incisive takedowns of voter ID laws we've ever heard.

Dan Barasch and James Ramsey have a crazy plan — to create a park, filled with greenery, underneath New York City. The two are developing the Lowline, an underground greenspace the size of a football field. They're building it in a trolley terminal abandoned in 1948, using technology that harvests sunlight above-ground and directs it down below. It's a park that can thrive, even in winter.
