“Anybody who thinks that life is a straight line up, hasn't lived life.” From radio visionary to Major League Baseball owner, Letterman to Imus, Jeff Smulyan has had quite a ride. In episode 129, he shares some of the best stories from his book, Never Ride a Rollercoaster Upside Down. The Ups, Downs and Reinvention of an Entrepreneur.
You may not know Jeff Smulyan's name, but you know what he's done. The creator of New York's famous The Fan radio station and the former owner of the Seattle Mariners baseball franchise joins us today to talk about lessons learned during his tumultuous career. Experience teaches you to learn from your mistakes and Jeff isn't afraid to share his (along with, of course, the huge wins he's had that shape an incredibly successful career). We'll talk about managing talent like Don Imus and trying to manage people double your age when you're leading in your twenties. It's a wide-ranging, thought provoking interview. In a rare treat, you'll also get TWO headlines today. First, an antiquated payment system is finally (maybe) being taken out to the trash. What is it? We'll share news from the Federal Reserve today...along with a second headline about your estate plan. The government has quietly changed the game around sheltering money in your estate. How does it work? We'll share that as well, plus steps you should take right now to make sure your estate is handled as you wish. Of course, we still will throw out the Haven Life line to a lucky Stacker, dive into a TikTok minute, and let you ponder Doug's trivia question about a huge hit song that was released (and that earned lots of Benjamins) on today's date back in 1984. A few episodes ago, I interviewed Jeff Smulyan about his new book. As I read the book "Never Ride a Rollercoaster Upside Down", I wanted to hear more about the construction of some of the great radio stations like KPWR (Power 106) Los Angeles, and Hot 97 in New York. Rick Cummings was apart of those and number of other radio success stories. In this episode, Rick shares some great radio stories like what it was like to build Power 106 using a coalition of records from both pop, dance and Latino influences. You might think that the stories gets embellished along the way but no; there was true consternation amongst music and radio on how to handle a station like Power 106. (Check out the episode page for proof) You will also hear about Rick's favourite mistakes, (his three favourite to be exact) and how Emmis accidentally purchased a top ranked radio station in WLOL. Rick also shared his experiences working with great talent from David Letterman to Big Boy.A Transcription of this episode is available here. From 'DA's New York Accent' (Subscribe Here), Jeff Smulyan has been called the Godfather of Sports Talk for his role in creating the genre. As CEO of Emmis Communications, he purchased WHN in New York City then flipped it to all sports and rebranded it as WFAN. It was a decision met with resistance and doubt within the company, let alone the outside world. And the early results were harrowing. But within a year, the FAN became an NYC staple and soon there were copycats nationwide. This is the story of how Suzyn Waldman discovered Buck Showalter, the FAN commercial that was too crass to air, and the early friction between Mike Francesa and Chris Russo. If you've ever listened to an all-sports radio station, this is the story of how that all happened. It is entitled, “ Never Ride a Roller Coaster Upside Down – The Ups, Downs, and Reinvention of an Entrepreneur.” It can be found here: https://a.co/g9fjkDu. In this episode, Smulyan talks extensively about what went right and what didn't during his tenure as the Mariners' owner. IBJ reporter Dave Lindquist, in this week for Mason King, talks with Emmis Corp. founder Jeff Smulyan about his 2022 memoir “Never Ride a Roller Coaster Upside Down: The Ups, Downs and Reinvention of an Entrepreneur” The book—which he wrote at his daughter's urging—caps a year of tremendous transition for Smulyan, whose roster of former employees includes David Letterman, Mike Pence, Isaac Hayes and Ken Griffey Jr. Emmis sold four Indianapolis radio stations and Indianapolis Monthly magazine in 2022, ending the company's four-decade run as a media powerhouse. Although Emmis still owns two radio stations in New York City, the company is now focused on three assets it has in the fields of e-commerce, ergonomics and corporate podcasting. Lindquist talks with Smulyan about his career, his successes and some of his initiatives that didn't go so well, including NextRadio—a costly effort to make mobile phones act like smart portable radios that never took off. On this Wednesday edition of Sid & Friends in the Morning, Sid recaps his long day yesterday, including the stress test he had to undergo to make sure he shouldn't be alarmed by getting winded from a flight of stairs. Rest assured, Sid received a perfect bill of health from the doc and was actually told he has the body of a 25-year-old. Go figure. In actual news of the day, Sid thanks his friend John Catsimatidis for bestowing the honor of lighting the World's Largest Menorah upon him last night, shouts out Mayor Eric Adams' Chief of Staff Frank Carone, Arizona's Kari Lake prepares to take two of her election fraud claims to court against her opponent Katie Hobbs, Sid goes over the dreadful Omnibus bill that the Democrats are rushing to pass before the House turns over to Republican control in 2023, and Congressman-elect George Santos seemingly falls of the face of the earth following a shocking article detailing how Santos' resume and life story is largely a hoax.
