If Jill were to create a pantheon of Autism Gods, Jackie Ceonzo would be right there in the center. She is the rare autism mom who struck out to create recreational and enrichment classes and activities for children and adults with severe forms of autisms. Including "the biters," as Jackie puts it. The kids who routinely get rejected from other special needs programs because of their behaviors. The kids who cost the most money. Jackie is a force of nature who founded SNACK*, a program located in midtown Manhattan, where clients can access a wide variety of options and "Snacktivities," including swim, art, music, yoga, soccer and cooking lessons. The ratio is typically 1:1 depending on client needs. It's a rare gem that should be available, well, everywhere, but she faces many obstacles, including discriminatory policies that penalize programs for those with severe autism, and the need to raise a lot of money to cover the considerable costs. This is a can't-miss episode!Links:SNACK* NYC: https://www.snacknyc.comShop Cup of Joe Coffee and other items: https://shop.snacknyc.com
One of the best options for getting started in coffee without as much risk is a coffee truck. Especially emphasized post-pandemic, mobile concepts like coffee trucks have grow exponentially and with it the need for reliable information on how to become successful in that context. Today we will be talking with one the go-to coffee truck authorities, Vincent LaVolpa of green Joe Coffee School! Vincent discovered coffee while in the military working in the 16th Engineer Battalion of the 1st Armored Division as a driver eliminating IEDs. After this he became a paramedic with Albuquerque Ambulance for 7 years where coffee sustained him through that difficult work. In 2015 he started his first coffee trailer. By the end of year 2, he had a coffee truck, trailer and 4 carts. In 2018, my 3rd year in business, he opened Helix Coffee and Yoga, a coffee house and yoga studio collaboration with his wife. During this time, wrote his first book on coffee trucking. In 2019, they became pregnant with their second daughter and decided to close the shop. Vincent then dedicated himself full time to coffee consulting where I help people launch profitable mobile coffee businesses. Today we will be talking with Vincent about practical knowledge, misconceptions, and keys steps to take in running a successful coffee truck. We cover: Evolution of Green Joe Creating and scaling the first truck Important lessons learned Working with the trades and planning the space Keeping it simple Flexibility Hiring for a coffee truck Misconceptions and considerations Links: www.greenjoecoffeeschool.com www.greenjoecoffeetruck.com Related episodes: 115 : Finding Success in Mobile Coffee w/ Tim Cox / Communion Coffee 384 : How to Run a Successful Coffee Cart w/ Sarah Naylor of Daybreak Coffee Cart 359 : Founder Friday! w/ Nigel Price of Drip Coffee Makers NYC 187 : A Conversation with Nikki Outlaw of Anecho Coffee Key Holder Coaching Group is launching in September!

We've seen Cometeer advertised quite a bit so, intrigued by the concept, we decided to do an episode about it. A coffee concept born of a lazy college student, Cometeer is a frozen coffee concentrate meant to be constituted with water and claims to be as good as a freshly brewed cup of coffee. Developed between said college student, an OG of specialty coffee, and a bunch of venture capital money, does this product solve a problem, or does it solve a contrived problem in search of a customer base? Listen and find out what we think when we try this variety pack of coffees from Klatch, Joe Coffee, Counter Culture, and Equator.Cometeer Coffee: https://cometeer.com/Further media:https://www.inc.com/anna-meyer/cometeer-frozen-coffee-allbirds-warby-parker.htmlhttps://www.bostonglobe.com/2021/10/19/business/gloucester-tech-startup-plots-future-coffee/https://www.notboring.co/p/a-new-day-on-earth-for-coffee?s=rHelp us buy questionable coffee!https://www.patreon.com/nobadreviewspodhttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/nobadreviewspodSponsored by Modest Coffee! For today's episode of the Entrepreneur Evolution Podcast, we are joined by Nani Ferreira-Mathews – Owner and Sales and Marketing Director of Thread Coffee Roasters. Nani has been working in specialty coffee since 2012. She started as a barista in a small Brooklyn coffee shop that featured Crop to Cup coffees. There she learned to pour latte art and how to properly brew coffee. She went onto roasting, production, and education for Joe Coffee and Nobletree in NYC. She was the Lead Educator and Sales and Marketing Director for Unique Coffee Roasters in Staten Island, NY. In 2017, she moved to Baltimore, MD to work with Woodberry Kitchen, Artifact Coffee, and Bird in Hand as coffee director and manager. Since becoming an owner at Thread Coffee Roasters in 2018, Nani has grown this local business immensely. She has helped Thread to achieve co-operative ownership of their green coffee importer and recently received the high honor of B-Corp certification. Her dedicated work towards a more transparent, equitable and sustainable coffee industry has been recognized on an international level in recent years and has brought attention to Thread Coffee Roasters and Baltimore City on a global scale. Thread was named Best Coffee in Maryland by Food and Wine Magazine in 2019, and has had several notable mentions in Bon Appetit, Sprudge, Daily Coffee News and Roast Magazine. In Baltimore City, they offer free home delivery and have innovatively worked to create a zero-waste CSC (Community Supported Coffee) Coffee Refill Program. Thread's importing practices have a carbon neutral goal for 2022, which will be achieved by offsetting carbon emissions through meticulous tracking at the farm and shipping level then offset by supporting and funding sustainability measures, such as shade grown coffee farms and increased biodiversity and soil health programs at the farm level. Nani has already achieved so much, but isn't stopping anytime soon. She continues to make an impact and push for a more sustainable and equitable industry, helping to both facilitate a conversation and put into practice changes that are long overdue. When not working, Nani is an activist, writer and musician. Go to https://www.threadcoffee.com/ to learn more about Thread Coffee and their mission…and maybe even pick up a bag of coffee while you're there! Paul Bearer is the vocalist for one of the most influential and underrated New York Hardcore bands of all time: Sheer Terror. Sheer Terror came out of the very strange New York Hardcore scene of the 80s — before the music became codified into the metallic, bouncy mosh parts we think of as NYHC today. While Sheer Terror is certainly no stranger to blending metal and punk, their sound is much more Tom G. Warrior plus Oi! rather than syncopated, single-string riffs. Nothing against bouncy mosh parts, but Sheer Terror is much more my cup of tea, personally. Paul and I talk not only about the weird world of punk and hardcore in New York in the 80s, but also about Paul's cooking and his aggressive and comical pet Russian tortoises. Jonathan Rubinstein is the founder and CEO of Joe Coffee an award-winning collection of destination coffee shops in New York City. Jonathan is a real life renaissance man. One of Jonathan's lives was as a successful camp director and before starting Joe, he worked as a talent agent. Jonathan's inspiration for Joe's came when he Jonathan noticed that many of the city's cafes focused more on their decor and atmosphere than on the coffee they served. In 2002, he left the entertainment field to open a coffee shop that would be obsessively committed to producing coffee as a culinary art. Jonathan's Radio Television Public appearances and press literally span two pages of a google doc at a font size of 8. But to name a few: The Chew, Martha Stewart Living, Emerils Table, Named one of the “10 Best U.S. Coffee Bars” By Food & Wine, and The New York Times: Named them as one of “10 Outstanding Coffee Bars” in New York City. On a personal note, I have to say that Joe's coffee is by far and away the most delicious coffee in New York City and arguably in the country. By summer of 2021 there will be 23 Joe Coffee locations around the city. Jonathan lives with his 12 year old daughter in Brooklyn. They have a dog named Belle.

On this episode I chatted with Tim Herbel founder of Not Your Average Joe coffee shop. Tim is from Hooker Oklahoma and grew up around family members who served the community in a variety of ways. But never coffee. Then he started Compadres Coffee as a white label roaster for local coffee shops. After entering some blind taste testing competitions and WINNING! The coffee they kept winning with was called "Not Your Average Joe". Tim was approached by a coffee shop in Midtown OKC and asked if he would like to take it over. The shop was their and they called it the name you see today. Today is the grand opening for their Norman location! You should definitely swing by. The BEST thing about this company is that they employee disabled adults. (80% of disabled adults are unemployed) so this isn't just a coffee shop. It is a charity that happens to serve incredible coffee. Branden Marty is a Navy veteran with experiences across a range of challenging environments—from the flight decks on naval vessels to the corporate C-suite to the boot-strapped startup. He is a strategist, a collaborator and an operator. Every assignment throughout Branden's career has been imbued with the same ingredients—a dedication to community service and advocacy. For example, the Department of the Navy (DoN) asked for Branden's assistance in submitting a bid from the City of Chicago to host the 2017 Warrior Games. Branden voluntarily led the effort to build public and private sector support and brought DoN leadership to meet with Chicago leaders. It led directly to the awarding of the Games to Chicago. Veteran advocacy is Branden's vocation, particularly veteran employment and wounded warrior support. This passion is reflected in the missions of the two companies he leads: Veteran Roasters, Cup O' Joe Coffee and Bridge My Return (BMR.) Speaking in generalizations or platitudes is annoying. Really annoying. But sometimes easy or necessary. Think of phrases like, “go with the flow,” or “everything happens for a reason.” These statements mean NOTHING—they can even go so far as to be insulting in the wrong context. When folks ask what this podcast is, I end up relying on some—even though I want to tell them how complex and fascinating and weird the world is, I usually end up saying something like, “this podcast is about feminism and coffee.” Sometimes that feels…callous, or wrong, or like every person who talks on my podcast has the same experience—and they don’t. In the coffee industry—and probably all industries—we use generalizations all the time, but the world is way, way more nuanced than summations about the world around us like, “we need to pay more for coffee,” or “women in coffee producing countries are often overlooked.” And that’s something my guest, Amaris Gutierrez-Ray, noticed quickly. We speak way too generally about women in coffee. Amaris, who is the Director of Roasting for Joe Coffee in New York City, started the Women in Coffee Project as a way to shine a light on the complex and nuanced world of coffee growing for the women who live in producing countries. The Women in Coffee Project centers around narratives and storytelling, often inviting coffee producers to speak about their own experiences. It sort of makes sense someone like Amaris would crave this type of primary research—she has a background in museum science and archival information, and has always questioned where facts and figures come from. Imagine reading a study about water from Nestle, who has gone on record saying they don’t believe water is a human right, versus a non-profit whose work centers around accessibility to clean water for all. They’d likely produce some very, very different facts and figures. We get into these ideas of complexity, nuance, and what it means to find solutions to conceptual problems like how we represent members of our community—all in this episode. Here’s Amaris.
There's a world of information when it comes to roasting. Some of it is quantifiable and organized—you can pick up books about roasting, there are hundreds of classes you can take. And some of it is…just around. It's the stories passed from roaster to roaster, the techniques picked up from mentors and bosses that aren't written down anywhere, but still contribute to the collective information about roasting. In a way, this podcast—and the Matchbook Coffee Project in general—are ways to capture those stories, and find ways to share a person's perspective on coffee with a new audience. Amaris Gutierrez-Ray is the featured roaster for the month of October, and she thinks a lot about how information, particularly the stories of women from coffee-producing countries, are shared. She started the Women in Coffee Project, and through this project she collects anecdotes and creates platforms for women in producing countries to share their narratives. Amaris is the director of roasting and part of the green buying team for Joe Coffee—they're based in New York and have cafes in NYC and Philadelphia. With a background in Museum Science, Amaris thinks about the way we consume and keep track of information. This is a problem she deals with daily—she works with four roasters to supply all of Joe's 19 retail shops and their wholesale accounts—and getting folks on the same page isn't easy. But she puts a lot of emphasis on mutual trust and following the data. Those are just some of the things that make her an excellent roaster, leader, and coffee professional making meaningful change. Here's Amaris.

The Legendary Rev. Paul Bearer ladies and gentlemen. I met up with Paulie and had a conversation with him at the Dakota Diner on Staten Island. We talk the evolution of Sheer Terror, Joe Coffee, and everything in between. He is one of the most brutally honest people that I've spoken with so far. He calls it how he sees it and has no filter. He is, in my opinion, an extremely interesting person with a very unique personality in which I found refreshing in a way. He pulls no punches and I respect that about him. I hope you enjoy this episode. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to sit and talk with the man. Respect.

Some Sunday Morning Special: Gossip, Rants und Lebenshilfe. Diesmal aus Köln und New York City. Zu Gast ist Paul Bearer (Sheer Terror). In this episode of the mighty Aethervox Ehrenfeld Podcast I have a conversation with Paul Bearer of Sheer Terror and Joe Coffee fame. It took a while until I finally convinced Paul to do this with me and I was very happy when this finally happened. We talk about his life and career as well as growing up in old New York and how life in the city is in 2016. I learn how Marky Ramone eats a Snickers Bar (it's disgusting) and that Paul wishes he could write cheerleader lyrics like Jamey from Hatebreed. This conversation is of personal significance to me (I forgot to tell him that I have a Time don't heal a Thing Tattoo on my shin). To this day I can relate to Sheer Terror as a hardcore band and Paul as a character and the driving force behind it because of the deeply personal approach in the lyrics, the nihilism, the misanthropic undertone, the poetry and at the same time the wit and hilarity of them. Paul is not a bitter guy at all and very easy to talk to. Also he is a great singer and entertainer. I truly appreciate the time he took to have this conversation with me. That being said: We did this via Google Hangout on Air and there is some sort of time delay from Brooklyn to Ehrenfeld (who could have foreseen that) which might be confusing to listeners. Also the submitted audio quality is not the best, some words are cut of and Paul speaks in his unique Staten Island mother tongue, which I have been told is not easy to understand by the untrained listener. Thus I made the decision to release this episode of the podcast as a bonus in between Thursdays. I hope all of you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed doing this with Paul. I guess you can easily hear the excitement in my voice. Show us some love: Abonniert den Podcast kostenlos bei iTunes, folgt uns auf Facebook und empfehlt uns euren Freunden!
