Immigration, capitalism, feminism, intersectionality, and the civil rights: this musical has it all! Flaherty & Ahren's 1998 musical Ragtime is a big, expensive show with lots of plot (never Peter's strong suit) – but we love this musical and what it has to say about kingdoms of power and the kingdom of God. _________________________________________ Peter & Nathan make some highly controversial claims: – "Ragtime" is the greatest opening number in Broadway history. – "Daddy's Son" – Nobody sings this like Broadway's GOAT, Audra Ann McDonald. Nathan will fight you on this. – "Henry Ford" & "Wheels of a Dream" – Is Ragtime just an extended commercial for Ford? And we wonder together about hearing "New Music," listening for resurrection, and what it means to live faithfully "‘Til We Reach That Day." _________________________________________ You'll hear Brian Stokes Mitchell, Audra McDonald, Marin Mazzie, Peter Freidman, Judy Kaye and the cast of the 1998 Original Broadway Cast. _________________________________________ Never miss an episode! What's up, dudes? The 61st Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was held on November 26, 1987, in New York City, and shown to viewers live on NBC and CBS that same day from 9 a.m. to 12 noon EST, with the NBC broadcast being hosted by Willard Scott and Mary Hart. The participating celebrities included the likes of Rita Coolidge, The Oak Ridge Boys, Bobby Vinton, Phylicia Rashad, Judy Kaye and Jill Schulz. The weather for the 1987 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade proved to be picture perfect for the several thousand participants that brought the 61st "Holiday Treat for Children Everywhere" to life. The 2.1-million spectators that lined the streets took a course in balloon watching as 10 giant balloons flew above them, four of which were new - Spider-Man, Ronald McDonald, Snoopy, and Snuggle. The debutants joined the balloon versions of Garfield, Woody Woodpecker, Superman, and a myriad of other helium giants. Following the Albertville High School Aggie Band's entrance into the concrete canyons was a cavalcade of merry marchers, fantasy floats and comical clowns. The hit musical, Les Misérables, performed a number for the NBC telecast, and Rita Coolidge sang "Your Love Is Lifting Me Higher" from high atop the Turkeyfloat. Jim Henson and Willard Scott were also honored with a Macy's-sanctioned Rollie Award - Henson for 11 years of Muppet participation in the Parade, with Willard's Rollie for seven years of Parade participation. Patrick Swayze trotted down Broadway on his very own Arabian stallion, and Bobby Vinton rode--or flew, rather--an airplane float from Trans World Airlines. Capping off the morning of fantasy-filled fun was Santa Claus, as always, who wished everyone a happy holiday season from his snow goose sleigh to start the 1987 holiday seasonCheck us out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Totally Rad Christmas Mall & Arcade, Teepublic.com, or TotallyRadChristmas.com! 00h 00’00” Take the a train – Duke Ellington 00h 02’47” PRESENTACIÓN 00h 04’17” CABECERA 00h 05’27” INICIO 00h 06’14” Overture 00h 11’07” Stranded again 00h 13’03” Saddle up the horse – On the 20th Century 00h 17’52” Where is the highest priest of the theatre? 00h 19’58” I rise again 00h 24’18” An angel of deliverance 00h 25’38” Oscar Jaffe/Lily Garland 00h 27’00” Indian maiden’s lament 00h 29’38” What’s your name child? 00h 30’56” Veronique 00h 37’51” I have written a play (Conductor) 00h 39’03” Together 00h 42’20” Never 00h 45’48” Oscar Jaffe he meant nothing to me 00h 46’20” Our private world 00h 50’45” Repent 00h 56’24” Mine 01h 02’55” I’ve got it all 01h 08’07” Entr’acte 01h 09’05” Life is like a train 01h 14’16” I have written a play (Congressman) 01h 15’44” Five zeros 01h 20’44” I have written a play (Doctor) 01h 21’27” An anthology of womankind 01h 24’12” Sign, Lily, Sign 01h 31’01” She’s a nut 01h 36’38” Max Jacobs 01h 37’35” My play by Somerset Maugham 01h 38’24” Babette 01h 44’53” Because of her 01h 50’06” Lily / Oscar 01h 53’46” I had to do it to save you 01h 54’56” Finale 01h 56’46” CONCLUSIONES Y ANÉCDOTAS 01h 59’50” The legacy 02h 05’41” Lily / Oscar – Judy Kaye & Rock Hudson 02h 08’04” AGRADECIMIENTOS Y DESPEDIDA 02h 08’42” Runaway train

My guests on this episode are the original producer and director of the Broadway musical GREASE -- Ken Waissman and Tom Moore. This is the second half of our recent conversation. If you missed part one you may want to catch up on that first before listening to this one. This week marks the 50th Anniversary of Grease's move from the Eden Theater on the Lower East Side to The Broadhurst -- the first of the three Broadway theaters Grease would play during its record breaking eight year run. And it fact, on June 5th, just a few days after I spoke with them, Ken and Tom hosted an anniversary party at Sardi's, where they and Grease's original cast had celebrated the show's opening back in 1972. Grease alumni attending the event included co-writer Jim Jacobs, choreographer Patricia Birch, and performers Marilu Henner, Judy Kaye, Jerry Zaks, Carole Demas, Ray DeMattis, Ilene Graff, Barry Bostwick (via Zoom) and many more. All of them also contributed their memories to the new book: Grease – Tell Me More, Tell Me More – Stories From The Broadway Phenomenon That Started It All. I've been collecting photos and video of that event as well as the two recent Grease reunion shows at 54 Below and posting them in my Broadway Nation Facebook Group where I invite you to join me and more than 2000 other fans of this podcast -- who probably much like you are hooked on Broadway musicals. Here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/375627810176381 In this episode Tom and Ken share some fascinating stories about the development of the show including how they worked with the show's authors to trim the original "phone book" size script down to a manageable size, how they inspired them to add some now classic hit songs to the score, and how they all survived a disastrous first preview and then reworked and revamped the show in just three weeks. Even though Ken was at that time the youngest producer on Broadway, your will hear how he masterminded some brilliant old school style producing tricks that helped turn a near flop into one of most successful musicals of all time! My favorite part of this episode is in the second half when Ken relates how he had to wheel and deal with the Shuberts and Nederlanders, and go head to head with the “Abominable Showman” himself –- legendary producer David Merrick. It's "The Modern Era of Broadway" vs "The Golden Age"! It's quite a story! Enjoy! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
It may be hard for some of us to believe, but this past Valentine's Day – Feb 14, 2022 – marked the 50th Anniversary of the New York opening of the musical GREASE, at the Eden Theater on 2nd Avenue. And next week, June 7, will mark the 50th Anniversary of its official move to Broadway. My guests this week are that Grease's original producer, Ken Waissman, and original director, Tom Moore, who along with Adrienne Barbeau (the original “Rizzo”) are the editors of the new book : Grease – Tell Me More, Tell Me More – Stories From The Broadway Phenomenon That Started It All. Ken Waisman is a Tony Award winning producer who made his Broadway debut with the play And Miss Reardon Drinks A Little. In addition to Grease he went on to produce Over Here! starring the Andrews Sisters, and the long running plays Agnes Of God, and Torch Song Trilogy. Tom Moore is a leading theater, film and television director whose work on Broadway includes his debut with Grease, Over Here!, Moon Over Buffalo starring Carol Burnett, and Night Mother. Their new book is made up of a the personal, behind-the-scenes memories of the show's creative and production teams, as well as scores of cast members from Grease's original cast, five national tours, and record breaking eight-year run on Broadway. In this episode you will hear about how Ken discovered the show in a ramshackle community theater production in Chicago; why Ken chose Tom to direct the show instead of Michael Bennett; how Tom almost turned the show down; and how together they discovered and cast more future stars than probably any other musical in history! Grease alumni include Adrianne Barbeau, Barry Bostwick, Jeff Conaway, Carole Demas, Greg Evigan, Peter Gallagher, Richard Gere, Marilu Henner, Judy Kaye, Rex Smith, Patrick Swayze, John Travolta, Treat Williams, and Adrian Zmed. As well as the future Broadway directors Walter Bobbie, Scott Ellis, and Jerry Zaks. Has any other show produced that many stars? Even if Grease is not your favorite show, I feel certain that you will be fascinated by their stories of how the show came together, as well as the casting stories of John Travolta, Patrick Swayze and Richard Gere. Broadway Nation is written and produced by me, David Armstrong. Special thanks to Pauls Macs for his help with editing this episode, to KVSH 101.9 The Voice of Beautiful Vashon Island WA, and to the entire team at the Broadway Podcast Network. Audra McDonald is coming back to Broadway in Adrienne Kennedy's Ohio State Murders. This will make Kennedy's Broadway playwriting debut at the age of 90. Ohio State Murders will be directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon, who last directed A Soldier's Play before the Broadway shutdown. The iconic Broadway snow globes have arrived back to Times Square. The “show globes” portray scenes inspired by Ain't Too Proud—The Life and Times of the Temptations, Dear Evan Hansen, The Lion King, and Wicked. They will be on display through December 26 in the Broadway Plaza between 45th and 46th Streets. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Universal Studio's adaptation of Wicked was set to begin shooting in March in Atlanta. But the production's start has now been pushed to June, and it will relocate to the U.K. Reports are saying the delay will allow the filmmakers to get production efficiencies in-line, as Wicked will be the first production to shoot on stages at Universal's recently built Sky Studios in Elstree. Jon M. Chu is set to direct. Times Square is getting an exciting new performance space. The new indoor/outdoor stage is part of TSX Broadway, a 46-story tower currently under construction in Duffy Square at 1568 Broadway, between 46th and 47th Streets and is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2023. Nkeki Obi-Melekwe will now fill the role of Tina full time. Brandon and Sophie sit down with two-time Tony-winning Broadway actress, Judy Kaye, and discuss her incredible career ranging from starring in Mamma Mia to Phantom of the Opera, and currently Queen Elizabeth in Diana: the Musical while navigating Broadway amidst Covid as well as it’s reopening.
Judy Kaye first came to prominence playing Lily Garland in the original Broadway production of On The 20th Century opposite John Cullum and Imogene Coca. In a career spanning five decades, she has played theaters and concert halls across the globe, in roles as diverse as Lucy Van Pelt, Rizzo, Maria Von Trapp, Mrs. Lovett, and Grandma Kurnitz in Lost in Yonkers. Recent Broadway appearances include Cinderella, Wicked, Anastasia and Diana. She played Eurydice in Orpheus In The Underworld, Musetta in La Boheme, and Lucy Lockett in The Beggar’s Opera at The Santa Fe Opera. She has twice received the Tony Award; first in 1988 for the role of the tempestuous opera diva Carlotta Giudicelli in The Phantom of the Opera, then again in 2012 for her performance as the high-flying Duchess Estonia Dulworth in Nice Work If You Can Get It. She has also twice received the Theater LA Ovation Award; for her work as Emma Goldman in Ragtime, and as the melodically challenged Florence Foster Jenkins in Souvenir, two roles she originated on Broadway. She has sung with symphony orchestras throughout the US and Europe, and twice at the White House. She is also the voice of Kinsey Millhone in the Sue Grafton Alphabet Mystery Series for Random House Audio. Today’s episode (in celebration of Countermelody’s first birthday!) picks up where the last one left off: more musicals, more opera (and operaish) singers! Excerpts from cast recordings, radio broadcasts, telecasts, and live performances highlight the work of singers who divided their time, to a greater or lesser extent, between the Broadway stage and the operatic stage. We begin with the great bass-baritones (Ezio Pinza, Cesare Siepi, Giorgio Tozzi, and José Van Dam) and move through the great Broadway (and sometime opera) baritones (Alfred Drake, John Raitt, Bruce Yarnell, Robert Trehy, Leslie Scott, Lawrence Winters, and John Reardon) with a nod to other opera singers who have also graced the Broadway stage (Helen Traubel, Shirley Verrett, Mona Paulee, Dorothy Sarnoff, Risë Stevens, Lee Venora, Camilla Williams, and Carol Brice). We then consider singers whose vocal abilities could easily have put them on the opera stage, had they chosen to so devote themselves (Alice Ghostley, Madeline Kahn, Barbara Cook, Florence Henderson, Judy Kaye, Lisa Vroman, Audra McDonald, Victoria Clark, Rebecca Luker, and the late Marin Mazzie). The episode also features tributes to two recently deceased divas (Gabriella Tucci and Christiane Eda-Pierre) as well as a spotlight on the gorgeous soprano Margaret Tynes, who just celebrated her 101st birthday. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel’s lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” Occasional guests from the “business” (singers, conductors, composers, coaches, and teachers) lend their distinctive insights. At Countermelody’s core is the interaction between singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Two-Time Tony Award winner Judy Kaye joins me, as we discuss her journey from a 'Desert Rat' from Arizona to Broadway, limousines, golf, and those pesky Stephen Sondheim Audition Jitters. Oh, did I mention Tony and Tony?
Judy’s get’er done mentality is something she has carried her whole life. She paved the way for wether goat shows on the west coast and made an industry where there was a void in California.

Bonus Episode #3: Stalling... stalling.... There are only three more songbook songs left! And the amazing singers who are scheduled to record them aren't available for a spell, so it's time for another bonus episode. This week, I took a little detour down memory lane and picked a song in honor of my upcoming trip to my alma mater, Northwestern University, for the 75th anniversary of the big, splashy, student-written extravaganza, The WAA-MU Show. As a student at Northwestern, I contributed songs to all four WAA-MU shows (1983-1986) and performed in two of them, as well. It was an amazing and formative experience, particularly as a young songwriter, to see and hear my songs so fully realized (i.e. professional orchestrations for a 30 piece orchestra, huge ensemble, major production values, etc.)."P.A.'s Turn" was written for the '84 show. It was a tribute to the great pull the show has over its participants, as a production assistant (PA) aspires to WAA-MU greatness. Recorded 4/24/06.The song has music by me, and lyrics by myself and my (still to this day) dear friend, Tracy Christensen, whose name you may recognize as the wonderful costume designer of such productions as this season's Broadway charmer, Souvenir, starring Judy Kaye, and Candide at the New York Philharmonic, filmed for PBS/Great Performances, starring Patti Lupone and Kristin Chenoweth (and featuring yours truly as Maximillian)."P.A.'s Turn" was originally sung by my WAA-MU muse, Marietta DePrima, whom you may know from her extensive TV acting career. (Check out her reel from The Hughleys!)
Judy Kaye talks about recreating the spirit and decidedly unique voice of 1940s-era vocal phenomenon Florence Foster Jenkins in "Souvenir", and talks about her star-making experience taking over the role of Lily Garland in "On The 20th Century", as well as her roles in "Phantom of the Opera", "Ragtime" and "Mamma Mia". Original airdate - November 25, 2005.
